5:00 PM
Oh hah, yeah I had a "replace electric connector" on my SYS server once too

Bob
@qasdfdsaq I went straight in and installed my own OS :P
Debian with root on ZFS.

I never had KVM-over-IP with OVH. Not even an option.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Is that their code for "we fucked up but we won't tell you how"?

@qasdfdsaq I just booted up over KVM-over-IP and sideloaded my OS through a live cd iso, and did all that over RDP to Windows on my old server :P

Maybe they're better now... but that was the main reason I switched.

Bob
5:00 PM
@qasdfdsaq It's free with all 2013, 2014 servers, IIRC.
@allquixotic And I used your Windows server to bootstrap mine :P

@qasdfdsaq it's standard now with the enterprise servers
@Bob yup, then I used it to bootstrap mine

I had an '08 server >_>

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Yea that might do it. I'm not sure they even had a BMC on those :P
They use SuperMicro hardware. Dunno how that did historically.

They don't. But the new ones that don't have inbuilt BMCs give you the option of a hardware external KVMoIP for £20 a day
Their low-end range is still built from miniITX Asus desktop boards

let's see... qemu-kvm is taking up 3-5%, two different TS3 servers taking up 2% each, ksmd eating 0.7%, gateone 0.7%, various RCU processes <1%, ZFS <1%, load average 1.09
something's nomming away on a CPU thread (I have 12-way SMP, 6 cores with HT)

5:03 PM
18:00:33 up 124 days, 1:31, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.02, 0.05
^^ That's my ZFS server

Bob
All I see is a bunch of qemu threads :P

l2arc_feed rarely slows up for me; qemu is much busier (Windows...)

I think my qemu Windows VM is off right now, but I do ahve aggressively tuned l2arc settings

Bob
My memory usage is entirely too high.

@Bob you haven't trimmed back your arc then

you mean his l1arc?

I set mine to 32 gigs
@qasdfdsaq edited :P

are filenames metadata or something else?

dammit how do I get it to show up nicely formatted

@qasdfdsaq is that a terabyte of RAM?

Yes.

@qasdfdsaq paste, then Ctrl+A, then fixed font

Bob
@allquixotic I pretty much didn't touch this after setting it up.

5:06 PM
@qasdfdsaq I wish I made half as much money as you >.<

Was under the impression that it defaults to 25% of RAM.

Oh it's not my machine

@Bob 50% :P
@qasdfdsaq no? I thought you bought this o.o

I have some exotic gear at home but no way am I paying £3000 x4 for 4 CPUs

Bob
5:06 PM
@allquixotic shrug still doesn't account for actual usage.

Nah, it's the 1TB HPCC node at work

ahhhh okay

@Bob well with your high unexplained RAM usage and my high unexplained CPU usage, we could offload all the poorly configured, buggy software between the two of us to a SP-32 and call it a day :P

32GB is unfortunately the limit on Xeon E3 platforms

Bob
5:07 PM

That leaves some 20 GB used RAM from somewhere else

Bob
Oh wow one qemu process is eating 6%

I'm only using about 16 GiB of RAM outside of my L1ARC

Bob
Make that two.

and 8 of that is Windows

5:09 PM
So... I pulled an all-nighter at work for the first time in my life yesterday. It was both amazing and terrible.
Arrived yesterday 9am, left today 7:30am

@ThatBrazilianGuy I did that once. My boss came in early and immediately saw how red my eyes were and how tired I looked and sent me home

Servers, servers, and more servers.

Oddly my recently upgraded desktop now has as much RAM as my server

if I create a text document, the document name is stored separate from the documents contents right

I was so tired that I couldn't ride my bicycle home because my muscles were completely depleted of glycogen or whatever from exhaustion
I had to walk it home

5:10 PM
@allquixotic There were around 8 people there, one of them was my boss's boss's boss. He stayed until 4:30am, after ordering pizza and soft drinks for everyone :)

as well as the icon and details

@RecycleBin: Basically, yes.
HOWEVER, on certain filesystems, with very small files, your text might actaully get stored as part of the metadata, but that's the exception to the rule

I'm a night owl and I'm usually up until about 2 am, sometimes later.

I tend to avoid pulling all-nighters unless required to prevent something from literally exploding or catching fire, I'm too old for that shit

Ha I go to bed like 6 AM at the minute

5:12 PM
In your own timezone?

its a phaze but its usually pretty late either way
yes

I've done it too
At one point in my younger years I ended up going to sleep at 2pm

rotfl

At that point it became f*** it, stay up a few more hours and gain an extra day.
Not to mention all the all-nighters I pulled doing my degree..

5:13 PM
At rare times, I'd be up until 6 am, then sleep well past noon.
Not that this happens often. I'm usually in bed by 3 am.

Bob
that swap_in can't possibly be right

Anytime I'm ever up till 6am I sleep well past noon

Bob
unless I misunderstood what swap_in is

@allquixotic The poor trainee kid who did most of the work (basically, he's the only one who had any prior experience with drupal), he wrote 90% of the frontend code (drupal theme).
He had arrived yesterday morning looking tired; he said he had stayed up all night on Red Bull and slept only 2hrs. Then he was with us for nearly 24hs.

Bob
That's a good 9 exabytes!
:S

5:14 PM
In the end, there was 4 people sleeping on couchs and even a table.
The cleaning lady arrived early and couldn't believe ;P

I'm tempted to try and tap into this gigabit fibre contractors are laying past my front window
I've had to tolerate their squeaky bulldozers for the past week after all

I got so pityful of the poor kid, I asked "hey, do you like sushi?" "I love it!" "Well, so we're taking you to the best sushi in the city"

That should entitle me to a share of the ducting right?

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Now you're making me sad :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy: How far does this sushi bestness extend?
@Bob: Bleh, it's being put in for the long-overdue LTE mast upgrade around the corner.

Bob
5:16 PM
(5 years ago, gov promised FTTP. then gov change and they wanted to do FTTN + VDSL2. now they say they're going to reuse the HFC in my area instead. in 2018. shared carriers can do die.)

Eh. Our property was initially stuck with 10Mbps ADSL2
Government gave extra funding to have FTTP put in, operator took the money and said screw it, we'll reroute them to FTTC instead

Bob
I'm currently on ADSL2+. Not even Annex M.
So... ~13Mbps down, ~1Mbps up. On a good day.

@qasdfdsaq It's a sushi restaurant called "Master Kame" and all the dishes have Dragon Ball names. Seriously.

At least we have FTTC now, which is an improvement over the 10Mbps ADSL we had last year

Bob
It's decent-ish for down. The up is a killer.

5:18 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Nice
Couple years ago though in another life/city my employer was running a 10Gbps pipe right past my street

Bob
@qasdfdsaq How is FTTN for you?
And what's the last mile?

Fine. In the UK it's limited to 80Mbps down, 20Mbps up, and that's what we get.

Bob
Ah.

Last mile is copper VDSL2, profile 17a
But my last mile is actually 50m

Bob
I think the plan was for the initial max offering to be 100/40 here, with some providers now offering 100/100.

5:19 PM
So line capability stretches to 120Mbps+

Bob
But my chances of seeing that on HFC are probably slim to nil.

I dunno, over here HFC offers 200Mbps
Upgrade to 300Mbps due shortly

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Apparently some of the VDSL locations here were up to 600m.
@qasdfdsaq Problem is it's a shared carrier.
Everyone on the same node will share whatever bandwidth is there.

What's that mean exactly?
Well yeah, that's how all HFC works
UK is running 800Mbps carriers

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Yes, and it's a problem during peak times.
<1Mbps has been reported during peak times.

5:21 PM
Not as big as you may think - it all depends on node size. With node sizes of 50-100 premesis some US operators are offering nearly 1000Mbps on HFC
Well, that just sounds like bad capacity managment.
The technology is just a tool, how they operate it... hmm
I know commercial operators that offer anything from 200Mbps to 1000Mbps over HFC. Some areas get 140Mbps+ at peak times on the 200Mbps service, some areas get <10Mbps. It's all capacity management... the cable itself can carry ~5Gbps

Bob
@qasdfdsaq They offer up to 1000Mbps.
A very big difference.
And it also depends a lot on what your neighbours do, as long as there is contention.

We're a picky bunch in the UK. People tend to kick up a big fuss if they get less than their headline speeds

Bob
It's highly unlikely that they'll be offering a zero-contention service.

Which means the ISPs usually have to provide low contention ratios
Certain ISPs commit to "zero visible contention"
With VDSL2 here we're guaranteed a minimum speed of ~60Mbps

Bob
We've become... ah... conditioned to less-than-advertised speeds. Long history.
I don't think I've ever seen a minimum speed guarantee.
Also of note: current HFC providers (Telstra, Optus) don't even advertise speeds at all.

5:24 PM
Yeah, what companies provide is generally tuned to what they can get away with in that particular consumer market.
"How shit can we make this service before consumers/regulators start kicking our butts?"

Bob
> Cable Speed Packs: Available to Cable serviceable customers only. Upgrades to Optus' fastest DOCSIS 3.0 internet service which increases download speeds for Australian-hosted content. Actual download speed can be affected by factors such as your equipment and LAN performance, settings, hardware, software, internet activity, location of content accessed and congestion. WiFi connection may not be as fast as wired device. Only Optus-supplied DOCSIS 3.0-compliant EMTAs will be supported. Computer must meet minimum system requirements and may need network settings optimised.
> Speed: Many factors affect speed such as internet traffic, your line condition, your hardware and software, the data source or destination and your location.
No numbers.

We have a highly competitive market here. In less competitive market areas, it can be a lot worse

Bob
God forbid they tell you what you're actually paying for.

They'll bleed you dry for 1Mbps service if they know your only alternative is 56k
But if there's multiple 200Mbps+ competitors in the area they'll basically drown you in fibre
One company has been recently marketing the "magic in our fibre optic cables"

Bob
Oh here's one from Telstra.
> Broadband speeds

BigPond Fast Cable can provide download speeds up to a
maximum of 30Mbps when downloading from capable sites
or across multiple sites but average speeds will be lower.

If you have taken up a Super Fast Speed Boost, it can provide
download speeds up to a maximum of 100Mbps into the home for
sharing across multiple users in a household. Existing customers
may need to purchase a compatible Home Network Gateway to
access these speeds.
Note the suspicious lack of upstream speeds.
That's because they provide 1Mbps up.
Or 3Mbps up on the extra option.
@qasdfdsaq Too bad they've apparently managed to convince the gov to abandon FTTP.

5:33 PM
Oh HFC has terrible upload speeds here too
Which is why they both throttle and hide upstream speeds while bleating about their "next-gen magic fibre" 200Mbps download speeds.

Bob
Ha.

My mobile phone has double the upload speed of the fastest HFC...

Bob
NBN FTTP was supposed to be 100/40 minimum.

NBN?

Bob
And that is why I'm pretty sure the new HFC plans are a massive cop-out.
The National Broadband Network (NBN) is a national wholesale-only, open-access data network and is under development in Australia. It is based on the premise that fixed line and wireless broadband connections are sold to retail service providers (RSPs), who then sell Internet access and other services to consumers. The NBN was subject to political and industry debate for a number of years, before construction actually commenced. The 2013 federal election and subsequent change of government from the Labor Party to the Liberal/National Coalition prompted a strategic review to be commissioned ...

5:34 PM
The whole existence of HFC is a cop-out
It's basically a "How to suck more profits out of existing cable TV infrastructure without having to build any new last-mile connectivity"
There's absolutely no point in it for new builds

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Did you know they bought some $30m of copper to add to the new network?
The new network that was supposed to be FTTP?
The new network that was changed to FTTN to reuse copper and save costs?
Yea, that new network?

lol

I wish I was still in NL imgur.com/okw62CM

Bob
> purchased 1800 kilometres of copper cable — enough to link the Sunshine Coast to Melbourne — at a cost of $14 million
Yea, sure. Instead of FTTP, let's add more copper.
Because that's not going to be an issue 10-20 years down the track. Nosiree.

5:37 PM
The Coaxial copper in HFC isn't actually that bad
It's potentially capable of over 5Gbps

Bob
@qasdfdsaq This particular purchase is for VDSL2, I believe.

I once got 165.28 Mb/s down :/

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Assuming you serve a single home.

Just sayin', don't diss copper itself
No reason you couldn't use point-to-point coax in place of twisted pair telephone wires

Bob
Just a wild guess, but judging by what I've seen of the old telephone cabinets I'd guess a good 200-400 per node. Unless they split on the pole.
@qasdfdsaq There's not much point adding it though, when adding FTTP wouldn't cost much more.

5:39 PM
^^ that's why I said there's nigh on no point to new HFC builds

Bob
Even node-splitting of existing HFC is quite difficult.

G.Fast DSLAMs on the poles are what are current nationanl operator are starting upgrades on
Like I say, competitive market.
I think the target speeds are 500Mbps by 2025, but 300Mbps has been achieved in "in the field" tests

Bob
Ha.
We'll be lucky to get 100Mbps by then.

Your country is a lot more sparsely populated though

Bob
True.
But even in the more densly populated areas that isn't happening.
@qasdfdsaq In terms of overall people/area, we're very sparse. But if you look at actual population maps most people are in fairly small spots along the coast.
Our cities still tend to be a bit sprawly, but dense enough that it's not too much off a good portion of the US.

5:46 PM
Yeah, it's a bit odd. Density isn't everything, our big cities have the lowest penetration of FTTP.

Any backup in this question, guys?

There's more FTTP in the rural countryside than in cities...

Q: Is there a way for autocompleting commands' flags when using OSX terminal?

tomasyanyI wondered if there is a way/plugin/bashrc_function for autocompleting commands' flags when using OSX terminal. Example When writing grep --excl and pressing tab it would autocomplete to grep --exclude and then pressing tab one more time would autocomplete to grep --exclude-dir.

I had no idea that's how it all worked

That's how you can user-customize it
I use this at work on tcsh. Different syntax but same concept.
It's actually super convenient for what I do :)

5:55 PM
It's like magic... Almost as if it knew what you wanted to type before you type it!

6:06 PM
:P
Well, computers do run on magic!

Hi all ! Is there any speed or other advantage in running a 64 bit linux on a 64 bit processor (core2 duo), versus running a 32 bit os on the same processor ?

I don't know for certain, but I do think that's possible? Maybe from a resource standpoint (i.e. less addressable memory). Dunno if it makes a difference in the OS though. I know that there was a performance hit (at least in Windows) when running 32-bit software in a 64-bit edition of Windows, because it emulated 32-bit mode.
But if the OS is 32-bit, not sure. The OS is booting the CPU up in 32-bit mode so it's operating in a different mode altogether than if it was in 64-bit mode.

Q: 32-bit vs. 64-bit systems

Mehper C. PalavuzlarWhat are the differences between 32-bit and 64-bit systems? If you have used both of them, what kind of sharp differences have you experienced? Would it be a problem to use 32-bit programs on 64-bit systems in some cases?

I'm asking because I'm installing a new linux distro, and I'm deciding between compatibility (swapping hard drives and such), and having a possible speed advantage.

If in doubt, pick 64-bit

6:56 PM
64-bit is stable enough and hardware support is there that going with 64-bit really is the default these days.

7:22 PM
There is no speed advantage over 32/64 bit lots of other differences just not a speed difference

7:44 PM
For scientific and number crunching 64-bit does have a measurable performance benefit iirc...

That isn't the operating system that is a 64-bit application; I read and limited the performance question as just the operating system

1 hour later…
9:13 PM

Good news everyone!

how come C:/ has to be enclosed in double quotes
whats the good news, I could do with it right now

@RecycleBin My computer is only minorly boned now. 99% operational.
@RecycleBin Where do you have to use double quotes?

eg: copy . "c:\"

the 1% boned is the fact that my Windows bootloader now resides on a USB memory stick. If that stick gets lost or eaten by the cat then my computer is boned again.

9:16 PM
and cant we have C:/ too it would be way easier

Weird

Im sure / has worked hundreds of times before for me but it isn't now
it works in certain instances
"C:/" or " C:\" works

@RecycleBin dir c:/ fails, however cd c:/ works
dir "c:/" works

dir C:/
Invalid Switch - "".

Exactly
I've no idea why it works when it has "s

9:29 PM
its saying that the switch is after the / and is null

And why cd behaves differently to dir
It thinks / is an option with no value. dir c: / gives the same error.

9:57 PM
@RecycleBin Why is the DOS path character "\"? by Larry Osterman of Microsoft
"Here's a little known secret about MS-DOS. The DOS developers weren't particularly happy about this state of affairs - heck, they all used Xenix machines for email and stuff, so they were familiar with the *nix command semantics. So they coded the OS to accept either "/" or "\" character as the path character (this continues today, btw - try typing "notepad c:/boot.ini" on an XP machine (if you're an admin)). And they went one step further. They added an undocumented system call to change the switch character. And updated the utilities to respect this flag.

10:27 PM
help OMG

@RecycleBin Just wipe the VM, it'll be okay.

ive tried startup repair in the recovery tools
ive tried bootrec
but the BCD is still messed up
ive formatted the drive but it still says the bcd on it is messed up

@RecycleBin what OS you using?

win lose 7

same here. is it a problem with an internal or external drive?

10:30 PM
internal SSD
maybe I should try a low level format

I'm having a problem with internal HD and external flashdrive
do you have a startup recovery disk?

all I get is press esc in my error though

you might be able to run a scan if you have a system recovery disk

I have the OS disk

awesome! put that in -> restart the PC -> boot from disk -> run the scan and fix tool

10:33 PM
what tool

that might work if the problem is not too advanced yet... er, what's the name of that auto-fix thing
let me see if I find it..

ive tried the top and bottom options here already

Startup Repair, yes. Did you have a recovery point specified from before the issue?

ill try deleting the partitions on the ssd

if you did, you could use recovery, but likely you did not

10:36 PM
no the ssd is empty

um, I wouldn't
those things are tricky... I kept messing around with my HD and step by step it's become worse instead of better
have you tried reinstalling the OS from scratch?

why not just delete the partitions from the bad disk
theres nothing on it and will just partition it later

First, ask yourself exactly what would that serve? Second ask yourself if you know how to recreate your partitions. And third, ask yourself if what might be the consequences of such a maneuver so you are at least a bit prepared

because it would remove the bcd all together for that drive
um making a partition is easy

if you are positive on all three and confident you know what you're doing, go ahead.
it's easy, but one never knows what snag lurks around th ecorner. Be cautious and when in doubt, wait and ask; best thing I've learned from my computer woes so far.

10:41 PM
ill use diskpart

oh and if you do get it running normal again, First thing I suggest you do is make an exact image copy of the drive. Save it in a safe place. When you get in trouble, all you'll need to do is write the image back to the drive, assuming it is still functional.

windows 7 will then skip that disk as its blank

ik what you mean, it won't install the image because it doesn't detect windows 7 on it
but... you might be able to use other tools to copy the image over

it says its write protected
delete partition override

ouch. that's bad.
crosses fingers

10:47 PM
win7 is on the hdd and nothing is on the ssd
but when win7 boots it gives a bcd error for the ssd
regardless if bios boot order

ah I see, you don't have an OS on it.

nope

hmm
what make is the SSD?

samsung

10:51 PM
now I get the disk is not initialized
after removing write protection
ah it removed the partitions fine
ok good

Got a rejection email from one of the more recent applications. Interestingly its apparently cause they aren't set up to hire from here.

aww

Oh. Never gotten one of those before.

just got to keep trying.
you know how to fix flashdrive partition problems?

10:57 PM
yep that fixed it
efi image is gone, bcd is gone, etc

yay! congrats :)

there's a link to a program called bootice in there. @JourneymanGeek, do you have a sandbox?

brb

@xCare VMS or disposable installs of windows.

when you get around to it, if you have a sandbox, I'd like you or someone with one to test something: Head to that question above -> click the link to bootice in the first answer -> on the page that opens, click the link at the bottom where it says you can download bootice. I've a suspicion the link does not download bootice
might download something else though, it's a russian site. someone needs to test that and if it does lead to nowhere good, maybe put a disclaimer on that answer that leads there.

@xCare Eww... Link only answer as well. Gross.

@MichaelFrank ikr

Oh for that, I have Linux boxen.

link needs verification despite the OP selecting it as best. I've followed the link and don't think it leads to where it says it should, only the program's info is useful on that page.

@xCare Find a good source and update the answer.

its still trying booting from the primary drive (0) which is the SSD
no way around that unless I swap the drives around
never buying a HP again

@xCare: I boot into linux, run fdisk, and murderate all the partitions.
Windows dosen't like multi partition flash drives
links to bootice 2 levels down are dead

11:26 PM
found a clean download of bootice from softpedia, added the link and disclaimer to the answer.

So... here's my problem
If the original link goes down the answer's pretty useless.
If someone used it and updated it with their own screenshots and observations that would be awesome

well, I'm going to use the program myself, however it's an old question... adding another answer at this time, it likely be lost among the long list of answers probably.
idk

Oh, you can edit the old answer. Bit of work, but its a nice thing to do
I've done it, people have done it for me too

hm, I'll think about it. good point on being nice.
there's no rep point benefits for edits, is there? I got 2 points somehow, never got that from editing before.
oh it's from editing someone else's post, never done that b4
lol, ironically, the OP's name on that question is: this is a dead end

11:51 PM
2 point for 'suggested' edits
so until you hit 2K
but typically if you do quality edits, people notice

i don't see how in that particular case, the question is quite old and already has alot of likes... do I get a portion of points from future likes of a post by editing?

@xcare "alot" is actually "a lot" if you didn't know

thereisalot inenglish which is confuzzling

yes, lol

11:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek Lol. I still got lots of bookmarks in order to properly make a 'why the F'ck is windows broken when it comes to multi partition flash drives?'

@xCare nope

I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.

You just get the satisfaction of knowing someone isn't wrong on the internet

@JourneymanGeek aw. lol, since when are they right? right?
