12:00 AM
@Hennes LOL
you guys must have an archive of that stuff handy -.-

I knew it existed. So I just googled (well, DuckDuckGo'ed) on xkdc someone is wrong

good one
BootIce is portable, nice.

12:36 AM
Yeah, and I posted the same one yesterday

I think I'm going to play hooky from handling flags today ;p

@xCare Bit racist to suggest being russian means it's malware. Some of the most useful tools I've downloaded are russian or came from russian websites

Original software seems russian too
@qasdfdsaq fixed that with more neutral, and incidentally more correct language

@qasdfdsaq @JourneymanGeek impromptu edit, will be removed in my next edit, but ty for the heads up

@xCare: FTFY

12:43 AM
er.. you got to it already, good thanks.

this is interesting. for a question about windows 10's start should the tag be used or should be used? or both because Windows 10 still uses tiles?

if it's about booting up, the latter.

what do you mean booting up?

I was going to un-edit it too. Some of the versions are broken, and the others even warn you the file may contain viruses.

@xCare Nope, the Start-screen tag is used for Windows 8+.

12:44 AM
Other than they're out of date, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that link. The checksums match exactly with the same files downloaded from other "reputable" sources.

Specifically for the start screen that appears when you press the start button.

(The links don't all 404 out, some do work)

thats what I thought @MichaelFrank but now that windows 10 resembles more of the windows 7 "menu" i wasn't sure.

@qasdfdsaq: I tried a few... ;p
couldn't be arsed to try them all.

1.0.4 works

12:45 AM
it's like a hybrid

Eh, I clicked 4 randomly, 2 worked, 2 didn't

@Insane: Its start menu by default, and only that if its a PC

like I say, even the newest version is 2 years out of date.

If its a laptop, it may or may not let you do smart screen.

But the checksums match => Site seems legit

12:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek I still don't have a clear answer though. Should I use both tags for Windows 10, just start-menu, or just start-screen?

@Insane Are you talking about the start menu, or the start screen?

@Insane: I'd say start menu
unless you run it in tablet mode

I don't. Okay thanks. (Side note I was under the assumption start-screen = the full screen metro interface when you press the start button on Windows 8/8.1)

yup
windows 10 has 'metro' mode, iirc

ye you can make it a full screen start if you want

12:49 AM
@Insane It is. If you click the on the tag, the description says exactly that.
"The Start Screen is the default Welcome page and Application Launcher in Windows-8. It is based on the Metro UI, features static or live content as Tiles, and search capabilities"

@MichaelFrank But it hasn't been updated since 10 came out.. Windows 10's start menu has the tiles described right there. So it's basically a hybrid. which is why I asked what we considered Windows 10.
either way, problem solved

First thing I ever do on Windows 8+ is remove all those stupid tiles

@Insane Microsoft define it as a Start Menu. windows.microsoft.com/en-nz/windows-10/…

On 10 it's actually kinda nice if you customize it yourself :P

Every single one that's there, is useless to me. Every single thing I want... isn't there.

12:52 AM
@Insane It took me waaaay too long to figure out how to get to the old "All programs" ._.

On Windows 10, it doesn't actually exist

I don't even use "App Apps". When I want to find something I just search for it.

You have 'All Apps', which is the replacement. But yea, it's no 'All Programs'.

speaking of stupid tiles...

Thank god Stardock are still around: stardock.com/products/start10

12:55 AM
I distinctly remember being able to install classic menu for a single user...
wasn't able to do it the last time.

@qasdfdsaq Do start 8 users get a free upgrade? If not fdaat. I'm content ;)

@qasdfdsaq: poor stardock. MS steals all their ideas ;p

Eh, it's 5 bucks
less than a coffee where I work

Hey that's two coffee's at tim hortons man

Then again $20 drinks at bars isn't that unusual around here
Two stops on the bus is like $4. So in comparison, Start10 is well worth it :P

12:57 AM
xD

Not least because getting on the bus doesn't give you the satisfaction of going "Haha FU Microsoft"
Unless it's a bus with a smart display showing a Windows bluescreen.

This happens

But I digress

NOT as epic as the blue pillars of death.

:D wasn't expecting that
Was thinking more of the bus that killed two passengers running into a pillar down south recently >_>
(yes they were blue)

12:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek The pillars might actually look pretty cool if it was Windows 8+'s BSOD. Nice clean font and a light blue background ya'know
And "collecting information", ah yes

@Insane don't forget :(

LOL

God I'm such a morose person

windows 7 doesnt even differentiate a disabled button well from a enabled button - another reason why it sucks
they both look the same, everything is ugly

I force myself to like new Windows versions. (Vista was an exception)

1:01 AM
lol
I like windows 8. It got me my first SSD ;p

I got made fun of in high school for using Windows 8. It was hilarious

@JourneymanGeek Windows 8 got me my SU T-shirt. :P

Star Trek Online doesn't differentiate between a disabled button and an enabled button, or a button that doesn't do what the icon says, or a button that randomly clicks other buttons elsewhere on your screen including hidden buttons that aren't even supposed to be available on that screen.
Oh man I feel old... when I was at high school Windows XP hadn't even come out

same
XP was and still is the best

I have windows 95. On 25 floppies.

1:03 AM
I have Windows 25. On 95 floppies.

...
Swapping multiple floppies just to boot the Windows installer... oh the old technologies I will never miss...
USB 3 boot disks + SSDs = finish installing a 20GB copy of windows before your old 20MB copy has even booted to the setup menu.

Is it worth posting a question about something that's not working in Windows 10's start menu if there are alternate ways to access the function without the start menu? Does that make sense?

Yes

Alright

Providing of course it's something that's actually meant to work, and useful

1:08 AM
Oh it's meant to work

Which I don't see any differently to "Is it worth posting a question about something that doesn't work in Windows if you can do it on Linux"

Q: Start Menu in Windows 10 suddenly closes when right clicking on username

InsaneWhen you right click on your username in Windows 10, at least for me, the whole Start Menu suddenly closes (by either waiting around or moving your mouse around. you also can't click on anything or it closes even faster.) Why this is happening is beyond me. I know I could sign out using +X or sw...

I love ShareX for it's ability to easily make GIFs

Yeah I've seen people post similar things lately, it's so very very very useful

That's a bit annoying.

My question?
It's messing with my OCD.

1:11 AM
It's annoying cause I don't even know where to start with it :P

lol, and the fact that I need to remove the palmrest to remove the ram on my old thinkpads
also, can't reproduce ;p
0_0
I didn't realise old thinkpads had essentially solid metal chassis

:P

Now to decide whether to steal the ram from the R60 for the R61, or leave it as a spare.

RAM is overrated. Memristors FTW

1:26 AM
lol
These are really old machines.
(I'm basically trying to install windows 10 into the r60 for giggles. To do that I grabbed the ram from the R61, temporarily since its below spec)
then move the ram back and see if it spazzes ;p

Does it refuse to install with too little RAM?

yup ;p
(minimum for x86 is 1gb. this has 512mb)

What's the minimum then, out of curiousity?
Ah

2gb for 64 bit

Install it in a VM and do a reverse P2V on it :-P

1:30 AM
but this essentially is a spare machine I might at worst run nomachine client
lol
I'm not feeling too hot. Working with hardware cheers me up ;p

Yeah I can spend entire weekends fiddling with the insides of my PC aimlessly

lol
I need to work out why my old monitor's dead next.

"Oh that watercooling tube doesn't have a perfect 90-degree bend with 4" bend radius? Let's tear it apart and replumb the whole thing! Again!"

lol
my last major upgrade was the 980ti ;)

Tsk. I have a watercooled 970
Due for an upgrade methinks
That said my last graphics card was a 5870, and that held out for nearly six years without an upgrade

1:33 AM
(bought it right after the 4K display)
I had a 660, great card

6 years being a looooong time for a piece of gaming hardware to stay relevant

ended up selling it to someone who needed a new card
rofl
8800 man.
Base reference card for many games
DESPITE the 8000 family's tendancy to drop dead in interesting ways.

See I had the 5870 so long that so many different generations of cards went by that I knew nothing about.

Q: Is it normal for a Dell Inspiron 530 to have is fan to spin up 3 times before it POSTS?

Journeyman GeekI picked up an used Dell 530 desktop. It seems to work, but it has an odd pattern of powering up the case fan (which might be faulty - it sounds like a jet engine) 3 times, while blinking the power light. No other fan seems to activate during the time, and it goes silent after that. I'm wonderi...

Basically everything from the GeForce 2xx to 7xx I knew nothing about, cause I had no reason to keep up to date with GPUs during that time

1:35 AM
What ever happened to the Late Answers review queue? I seem to remember it used to have a lot of answers in there but now it's constantly less than 5

lol
loooool

Being late is no longer fashionable

@Insane: there was a flood of questions new entries
We... did the needful.

I see I see. I always hit 20 first posts reviews but never get my hands on any late answers reviews. Bummer

Sorry ;p

1:36 AM
I see like 4-5 every time I check...

I see like 0-2
lol

(I was ploughing through something like 100+ late answers posts a day at one point)

Mods no limits ;) ?

No, but we can get review banned.
(and unban ourselves. Which I didn't realise the two times it happened ._.)

LOL
Is it an auto ban I assume?

1:39 AM
Yeah

ah

lol
If any mod had to ban me, they'd take my (not literal) mod hat away
I do think I'd get to keep the literal mod hat.

They give you a hat? Nice.
All I got was this T-shirt.
... not

@qasdfdsaq: 2 tshirts, and a hat, and some stickers.
I'm at like 2 SU T shirts, the windows 8 one, an AU tshirt, an SF T shirt, and a hoodie.
Tho the hoodie's probably going to get retired for my avengers VFX team one, or the ant man one when I get it.

No sticker for me :( just a mod message saying "You don't deserve stickers".

1:41 AM
lol

I want a T-Shirt

mods don't do that

This sucks

community team does.

They told me I was rude. That's equivalent to "You no get sticker" in my book, and in some people's books equivalent to "Santa aint giving you nowt this year"

1:42 AM
(Wait really though how do I get a T-Shirt)

@Insane: Be awesome. ;p

:(

So...
No promises but there's a few ways, most of which don't apply any more.
1) get to the last stage of an election
2) early on, be on the first page of a new site, but I donno if that was an SU thing
3) win it in a competition (but we've not had one for a while)
They used to have a SU swag store but it was too much work to keep running.

so basically 1) not feasible 2) not possible 3) not likely
/cry

sorry :/

1:46 AM
4) Steal one from someone who already has one

shh @qasdfdsaq
im already on it

(I'm bundling blackmailing in with stealing btw)

lol
If I somehow get another SU T shirt, I'll see about giving it away.

cough XL cough

1:47 AM
No promises
@Insane: that's my size anyway.

The Older shirts were nicer tho

And you know what they say about men with big t-shirts...

Also if you are lucky enough to get a shirt...
get black if you can
Not an option on all sites, but especially with the current base shirts, its a lot better.

definitely black.

1:55 AM
Anyone getting a Microsoft Surface Book?

not yet
;p
Its on my radar tho

2:20 AM
Does anyone know if it is possible to get OpenSSL 1.0.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 (precise?)

2:32 AM
is that an older oe newer version?

Q: Keyboard and Monitor in Laptop Format

halanAm interested in a keyboard and monitor that can be used in conjunction with a Chrome Box, while seated at a sofa. Something like a laptop with only keyboard/monitor function and no CPU.Does such exist? Can the Raspberry Pi Laptop be customized for such application?

I'd just suggest VNC at this point.

hardware request?
windows 10 on 512mb is hilariously slow

Now where do you find a VNC server for Chrome OS?
Chrome OS devices are ARM-based, so this isn't going to be trivial.

you use chrome remote desktop.

I can't find a Chrome OS server for that, either.

Bob
2:40 AM
And that is why locked down software sucks.

erm
CRD will run on chromeos i believe

Hmm... seems this is possible.

Q: VNC access to Chromebook?

George BaileyMy grandmother is beginning to use a computer soon. We are giving her a chromebook so that it will be easier to keep the settings right, and not get lost. However, for support purposes, and helping set up new things like bookmarks, plugins, and so forth, we want to set up remote control of the c...

What's the best tag for mandatory access control?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's under minimum requirements. I'm amazed it even installed.

[access-control]

damn VM takes ages to turn on caps lock when typing

@Bob: technically... it didn't ;p
I upped the ram, installed it, then removed the ram

Bob
o.O

3:56 AM

it occationally freezes halfway through the pre-login shade too.
(Seriously folks. Its a desktop OS, WHY DO I NEED TO FAKE SWIPE?)

Why is Windows used?

at all?
or here?
Oh, I wanted to test a theory I had about clean upgrades

Why do you use it?

hm
I game. It does what I want it to do.
I only really need one linux box
It comes with almost all my PCs so I tend to keep it around.

Yea that bundling is weird

4:02 AM
I'm not an idologically correct user.
do I need more reasons?
In this case
I want to see the effects of a mundane regular USB key as readyboost for a sub optimal system config

People using windows just to make fun of the weirdness

as well as see, not too scientifically if disabling services actually helps.
on the contrary

^ something win 7 cannot do ^

4:09 AM
@Clearquestionwithexamples: MS sells more OSes, and at a cheaper rate.
Until recently they essentially had the market
and well your choices are 1) niche systems 2) chromebooks 3) windows

Bob
@Clearquestionwithexamples Because it's easy and it works. I've lost count of the hours I've spent trying to get some resemblance of sanity out of certain OpenSUSE and Kubuntu installs.

and I bought a chromebook class system with windows since I could run linux on it in future

Bob
@RecycleBin Good for you.
It's so useful that I've never even seen that window before.

I don't even know what that is ;p

Bob
(Rephrased: what on earth are you even trying to point out?)
I mean, if you're going to look for every obscure feature -- sure, you'll probably find something deprecated/removed in more recent OS versions.
If you actually want to do something specific, then say it -- there's probably a better-supported modern way of doing so.
Granted, there are cases where the process for doing so can be quite complex.
But until you say what exactly this is, it's impossible to know if this is one of them.

4:16 AM
Deter people from posting train of thought wall of texts

it adds GPO's and other things for a certain subnet

Bob
Subset? Subnet?

subnetwork
I better go sleep, its like 5 am
but ill be back in 5 mins

Bob
shrug I'm almost completely certain that's still doable.
Of all the things that have changed in modern Windows OSes, group policies have probably changed the least. The backwards compat there is insane.
Win7 is completely happy to run on a 2003 domain functional level.

8 has many useful things removed

4:33 AM
Retag selinux and access-control to mandatory-access-control?

no
There's other ways to do MAC
and other forms of access control

5:17 AM
for some reason I keep typing "service" automatically as "services"
had to edit my post like 3 times because I kept finding that silly s at the end of the word

lol
Tested's got reviews for the surface pro 4 and surface pro book

anything interesting? :P
youtube is blocked at work ;P

Oh, just a review, and they seem positive
Maybe I'll buy one when I'm employed again ;p
Essentially awesome keyboard, pretty light, SB has a awesome screen...
And apparently there's a baseline model with nvidia now
Also looks like you can swap the bases between SB models
hmm
I'd like some nitpicking on an answer

A: How do you get your public IP address through the Windows command line?

Journeyman GeekYou can't. Why? There's no clear definition of a 'public ip address'. I'd note the answer's a massive abstraction, good enough to explain my point, but riddled with minor holes. Feel free to comment on big ones (so I can plug them). Essentially, all a public ip address is is an address on a subn...

5:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek how does that differ between dynamic and static IP:s then? Or is it completely irrelevant when it comes to public IP addresses?

@Leathe: completely irrelevant
So...
My ISP owns a block of IP addresses
they can choose to 1) use DHCP to randomly assign IP addresses 2) use them statically
however as far as another host is concerned, an ip address is an ip address.

that's what I thought

There's higher level routing things tho
or is that lower level...
essentially tho, a system only needs to know the next hop and destination

so basically, let's say when it comes to static IP addresses, only the ISP needs to know that it's static and that it's this specific computer/system/server/whatevertheFAUSDJOWA?
since any system looking for an IP address is just making a query to find out where the IP is, if I say for example try to SSH into a new server I just bought and got a static IP on it
and if it can't find it, it goes all the way up to the root server, which then knows where it's coming from
err, and by "and if it can't find it" I mean the first name server

6:34 AM
yup
Actually we can do this at the home level
Most of my systems use DHCP - so they're assigned a ip address by dhcp
I could however reserve a dhcp range, then set one of those ip addresses on the router.
Or not and risk ip address crashes
however to another system, whether or not its static dosen't matter
all that matters is that when it asks "who is 192.168.0.11" something responds.
your router or switch need to be aware of this I guess
but buuuut
you can run a network between two systems with static ip addresses
or just a dumb switch

Is this where I put on my tinfoil hat?

And once again I'm reminded of why I don't use Norton.
While trying to back up files from a computer with Norton on it => it goes and scans everything on the backup drive, in the background (absolutely killing performance in the process) => it "detects" a "hacktool" as 'high risk" (because of course there's no way I intentionally put that there -- turns out it doesn't like some particular packed files and also doesn't like some Android root exploits that might just have legitimate purposes) and auto-quarantines it.
Did I mention it's inside a TAR archive? And the quarantine somehow involves removing it from said archive? And that the restore process just dumps the file somewhere, leaving a broken archive??
Any "antivirus" that effectively automatically destroys data with no warning is an antivirus program I want absolutely nothing to do with.

What could be so hard about having a option to have the program ask first. norton is more for average people who dont have exploits and hacks on thier system , , on purpose :-)

Bob
I can't even fix the damn thing because I haven't got a clue where it was inside the archive -- it was a Nandroid backup of an old phone.

9:01 AM
my net went down :-O first time in a long time (when the ISP itself disconnects). It was out for almost 5 minutes , i was thinking "does this mean I might have to Git A Life"?
