ah yes, that was a fun changelog read...
I really should update sometime.

For certain values of fun

Bob
@JourneymanGeek fun ⊃ {amusing, confusing}

ahh, my brother's old laptop runs one of these ark.intel.com/products/27234/…

o_O?

Wierd, that's enabled, but not detected by cpu-z

!!disappoval

@djsmiley2k That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: disapproval

Bob
@JourneymanGeek would require PAE

._.
Why would being able to detect a flag need another flag?

Bob
2:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek I mean, you need to be using PAE in order to use NX (XD)

(this was I believe the last purely 32 bit generation of processors)
ah hah
I doubt this has PAE

Bob
Because the XD bit uses one of the high bits.
There aren't any spare high bits with a 32-bit address space.
> Physical Address Extensions 32-bit
@JourneymanGeek If it supports XD, it almost certainly supports PAE
I don't think it's possible to use XD without PAE
But your current OS might not make use of it, so maybe that's why it's coming up as disabled.

@Bob: Threw a copy of windows 7 on it to test
I'll probably nuke it for linux later or something

@allquixotic That's correct, and has always been normal behaviour regardless of 4K sectors. Most Windows' before Windows Vista read and wrote drives in 64KB blocks. Vista+ goes up to 2MB.
512n/512e/4K sectors is actually pretty much irrelevant as far as sequential R/W is concerned
@JourneymanGeek Pentium 4 Prescotts had PAE.

@qasdfdsaq this is a core duo, and its sort of a inherited system which I almost never use
So I have no clue what it is ;p

2:29 PM
Interesting: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… Supports NX, but not PAE
Or rather, PAE isn't mentioned

If I recall correctly, these were the last 'proper' pentium M processors

My thoughts are if the 2004 Pentium 4 had PAE, the 2006 Core Duo ought to as well...

anyway, lets see if windows 10 would install ;p

cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SL8VR.html - Yep, has both PAE and NX.

hah. Not enough ram ;p
So maybe
Anyway, let me grab a linux install, make a liveboot and double check

2:32 PM
How much does it have? I thought W7+ were all meant to run on <=1GB

Or you could try install the IoT edition designed for devices with like 64MB...
;)

It came with XP, and was running various flavours of linux

512 aint bad for XP. Had it running on 128MB machines at one point
I'm sure some cheapskates were selling netbooks with 512MB running Vista.

I've essentially retired XP
I have ONE box left

2:33 PM
I retired XP when I upgraded to Vista.

But you can get something with windows 8-10 for essentially the cost of a windows licence + enough freebies to cover half the cost now in theory ;p

(Yes, I did so deliberately. DON'T go there)

Yeah, I have an old PC in my cupboard that's too cheap to be worth selling

That's one thing I miss from school ;p
free windows licences.
lol

2:34 PM
3Ghz Athlon64 dual-core, 4GB RAM.
Could run any basic desktop stuff but the processor is barely worth the shipping cost :(

runs windows fine, has a valid XP licence if I can be arsed to pull the media, runs linux great.

Ah still get free Windows license, though they're not too expensive. I paid £50 for a unrestricted Windows 8.1 perpetual license
Good ol' thinkpads

lol
MSDNAA/Dreamspark
I don't miss school that much
and I doubt I'll do classroom stuff if I can avoid it
I believe I have the 1.66 mhz processor and the 15 inch 1024x768 screen

Eh, I quite like working in higher education. You get a lot of flexibility to get involved in so many different areas of I.T.

Oh working's fine
I mean being a student
I probably wouldn't mind corrupting the youth teaching, if its a topic I was passionate about.

2:38 PM
Well I had some good and some bad times as a student.
I'm sure most people had more of the good ones than me, but still.
Homework assignments, I will never miss.

lol
I'm a hands on learner.

I'm pretty sure you couldn't corrupt today's youth any more than they already are

I mean "cool for the summer", come on

The list of music considered the worst consists of albums or songs that have been considered the worst music ever made by various combinations of music critics, television broadcasters (such as MTV), radio stations and public polls. A piece of music needs to have been notable, popular, or memorable to be deemed the "worst ever", or it would be unlikely to top all-time public polls a few years after it was released. As such, a piece usually needs to have had a high profile at the time of its release, such as an unexpected hit that was highly disliked outside of its fanbase. Scholarly accounts of...

YAY
Rebecca Black's Friday is in there.
I would have instantly rewritten the article if that wasn't present.

I've heard... One of these...

Bob
There's always this one.

Bah, they missed out the biggest one of all
youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0 <== The first ever song to hit 1 billion views on YouTube
And I was there when it happened!

Bob
Oh wait here's the original.

"Who Let the Dogs Out?" is a song performed by Bahamian group Baha Men, released as a single on 26 July 2000. Originally written by Anslem Douglas (titled "Doggie") for the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival season of 1998, it was covered by producer Jonathan King under the name Fat Jakk and his Pack of Pets. He brought the song to the attention of his friend Steve Greenberg, who then had the Baha Men cover the song. The song became the band's first hit in the United Kingdom and the United States, and it gained popularity after being featured in Rugrats in Paris: The Movie and its soundtrack album. The...
gangnam style is hillarious

2:42 PM
How is Gangnam Style NOT in that list :(
I see Aqua - Barbie Girl is also missing.

or the ketchup song.

I am so going to have to go through that page when I get home.

I heard it once in a supermarket

Perhaps the first time in a long time I've been to contribute to Wikipedia - thanks to my unrivalled knowledge of cheese.

and I occationally have to squish that earworm.

hm. Processed cheese.

Dammit that preview gives it away

lol
@Bob: I was looking at that at one point

2:45 PM
Meh, Intel Compute Stick...

@qasdfdsaq: built in battery, standalone...

Bob
Better cooling :P
(more thermal mass)

needs ethernet but it would make a decent seedbox.
(well ethernet is optional, but I'd rather not run even a dinky server on wifi)

@JourneymanGeek: Yeah, but what are you going to connect it to that doesn't have wall power anyway?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You could probably grab a cheap usb<=>eth adapter

2:47 PM
@qasdfdsaq: would survive short power outages

Your TV wouldn't...

@Bob: yeah, but I have too much old hardware, and yanno...

(And I have a UPS for that...)

@qasdfdsaq: I wouldn't stick it to a TV

Bob
@qasdfdsaq losing display is far less troublesome than losing current working state

2:48 PM
My current download box is a NUC class machine which I remote into.

Meh, most people with media streamers don't seem to find it a concern (Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, tec.)
But I suppose if you're running it as a desktop PC/server

@qasdfdsaq: er... I wasn't looking at it as a tv box
I was looking at it for running stuff like znc and bitorrent.

Yeah, sorry. It just seems to be advertised as one

oh, absolutely. But who reads the manual here? ;p

Bob
@qasdfdsaq as far as media streaming - IMO this is also far more flexible than anything running Android or a custom OS

2:49 PM
Yeah, that's why I'll be getting a NUC or compute stick for the living room.
Though today we already have a PS3, Wii, XBox360, Amazon TV, Chromecast, Roku, and internet-receiver already, it's getting a bit messy back there...
(Only the Roku is mine incidentally, and it's just there for me to stream WiDi from my laptop)

@qasdfdsaq: I use my PC as a "TV" (along with other things)

@Bob: One flaw, Netflix won't allow you to watch 4K on a PC.

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Meh, they'll catch up faster.

@qasdfdsaq: heh, I'm hoping my remix mini would allow that when netfix comes here...

@JourneymanGeek I watch pretty much everything on my PC too, but my flatmate has a projector though, with a dozen devices hooked up to it. I have a Plex media server in the mix.

2:52 PM
@qasdfdsaq: my projector is a bit shit.
640x480

TV's an old plasma... my PC display is a dell 4K IPS display so...

Flatmate's is 1080p 3-LCD. Good, but not mindblowing. I don't use it much. I prefer the contrast ratio on my MVA display

kinda picked out my next second screen (and planning on sciencing it a bit) but that's pending the next job

I have four displays at home and work. -_-

2:54 PM
lol
2 displays here. Old job was 2 older screens

Technically, one of my two 24" IPS displays at home isn't mine

tho some of their monitors were excessive in a odd way ;p

I got it swapped under warranty, they sent me an extra one to try out and never asked for it back

(Eizo monitors. Pricy, but apparently the best colour reproduction you can buy)
nice ;p

Since that was over 6 years ago though the statue of limitations has expired and they can't sue me for it back anymore, and I can brag about it freely.

2:56 PM
;p

Oh my main monitor at home is an Eizo. not one of the pro series though.
But still a very nice display.

pcworld.com/product/1410017/… this is my second screen. accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/… is my primary
@qasdfdsaq: the newer ones self caliberate
which is cool

Yeah, so do some of the nicer Lenovo laptops

Q: Windows 7, every keyboard will only open calculators

computergeek69This is a very strange problem. Yesterday morning after having no issues last night, I powered on my computer and couldn't log in. I eventually realized the problem was my keyboard not typing. I tried 3 different keyboards and got no results, same thing everytime. I eventually logged in using ons...

lol

I think my ex-flatmate bought that same monitor last year
(the 24" one)

2:58 PM
Not too likely
its really old

Hmm. So is he? >_>

but It was nicer than my newer asus (which then died)

"Every number and letter key opens a calculator and does nothing else. Hundreds of calculators."

@DavidPostill LOL

3:00 PM
@qasdfdsaq: I think we got it in 08 or 09

Yeah it looks like the same ones we had in work from a '09 project. Guess they just look very similar still >_>

lol
dell recycles designs a lot
P series pretty much have identical industrial design
so maybe same series

"Hundreds of calculators." still can't stop laughing.
Sounds like a prank we'd play on fellow students at school with Sub7

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I suspected prank but that's less liekly if virtual always works

@Bob: worth mentioning anyway ;p

@allquixotic: that's complete bullshit.
Especially without compensation...
nice backslide tho

fucking hate my mom
some people just dont know when to shut up
best software to make slideshow videos?
basically just a plain background and some text
maybe a few photos

3:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek "What sort of errors? configure and make are applications you need to have installed to build things." - he was downloading a zip with prebuilt binary not the source tar.gz

Yet he claims the install instructions told him to run make and ./configure?
Seems like a PEBKAC in either case

Somehow he missed the big letters saying "Source download" and "Binary download"

yous say everything is PEBCAK what is the point

That readme tells you how to build it.

how does it help

3:47 PM
That's the first time I've ever used the term PEBKAC

@DavidPostill: He downloaded the binary but read the source readme and not the one that came with it?

Bob
The simple answer is that the vast majority of the time the user has done something wrong at some point.
And that's perfectly okay. Humans are not infallible.

Being born is what I did wrong.

@qasdfdsaq Pretty much.

Bob
3:48 PM
It's just useful to know whether the software (or hardware) is buggy.

I really regret that, but I can't do a system restore on my mom.

Bob
I've made plenty of stupid mistakes -- and it really helps to examine what I did, not what the software might be doing wrong.

@DavidPostill Well, well spotted, and well answered

Bob
(Of course, harder to actually do in the heat of the moment.)

@qasdfdsaq Thanks
Having said all that it wouldn't surprise me if a build would fail. The source is from 2005 ...
Let me try it ...
