12:03 AM
Its definately a matter of personal preference, but its also that I should have realised that my pointer was 1/5th the speed for a reason

12:36 AM
My Roccat Tyon is set to 2800 dpi (but with sense -4 for greater precision) on a 15.6" 1080p display.
If it's 4K on the same screen area (yes, laptops this size with 4K panels exist), that's more likely to be somewhere around 5000 dpi.
One button is set for Easy-Aim at 800 dpi.

@DragonLord noscript ftw?
@DragonLord I have a mouse with this feature, I have never used it in a game. Ever.

1:20 AM
@MichaelFrank its nice for precise work like sniping.

@JourneymanGeek Yea, I tried that, just didn't like the way it worked.

1:46 AM
@allquixotic: I know you have an ONLINE Dedibox, so I was looking at some of their offerings.
Didn't even know they had IBM POWER8 systems available.
It'll run more than US$20k a year, but look at the numbers: Two IBM POWER8 processors each with 12 cores at just over 3 GHz.
Let's not forget that POWER8 can handle 8 threads per core, so that's a whopping 192 threads!
512 GB of memory, massive SAS disk arrays (two SSDs, six 10k rpm hard disks), plenty of bandwidth.
It's meant for Big Data workloads from what I can tell.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Decent games let you set sensitivity scale while scoped, anyway.
I honestly have no idea how you guys use such high sensitivity settings, assuming mouse accel is on and WIndows is set to 6/11.
I'm on ~1000 and that's with near-zero desk space

> with sense -4 for greater precision

Bob
@DragonLord Why would you even bother with that?

That's set in the mouse driver.

Bob
Doesn't make the mouse any more accurate. Unless Roccat does weird crap.
@DragonLord What do I keep saying about trying to judge performance on clock speed? :P

1:55 AM
@Bob I know not to.
POWER8 is meant for serious number crunching.
The POWER8 processor die is larger than even the most powerful GPUs today.
The 12-core POWER8 die is 650 mm² large. (NVIDIA Maxwell GM200, as used in the GeForce GTX 980 and GTX TITAN X, is 601 mm².)
* 980 Ti
Didn't catch that quickly enough.

Bob
2:16 AM
Urk. Windows Defender is throwing a fit over IRC logs because someone decided it'd be funny to chuck an EICAR test into a fake iframe tag

@allquixotic, sorry, thought you were with ONLINE. Seems you're using Hetzner.

I'm the one with online.

Yeah, confused the two.

and online has some odder options

@allq is using a Hetzner EX-series machine from what I can tell.

2:30 AM
(hell, mine's an avaton. They had/have a super cheap via offering, and insanely cheap arm servers)

@JourneymanGeek Dedibox XC 2015. Still around.

Bob
@DragonLord He was. Over a year ago now, IIRC.
He then moved to OVH SP-64 (what I'm on now) then SP-128

Intel Atom C2750 Avoton, 8C/8T @ 2.4 GHz.
Great for web and other highly threaded workloads.
Fairly slow for single-threaded applications, though.

that's essentially what I need it for
I'm running web stuff, and eventually the email server on a VM tho
4 cores, 4gb
irc bouncer runs on the main box

Very popular dedicated servers. Cheap, yet capable of delivering plenty for performance for just the sort of applications enthusiasts run.

2:35 AM
@DragonLord: online.net/en/dedicated-server/dedibox-scg2 this was heavily discounted a while.
and if you don't mind arm blog.scaleway.com/2015/09/02/… 3 dollars a month
and they're fairly torrent friendly 0_0

@JourneymanGeek Well, this makes the most sense for applications that need lots of cores across a big cluster.
Scales out easily and inexpensively.

@DragonLord: or stuff that dosen't need much power. That's not that much more expensive than an additional IP address

Need more power? Just add one or more nodes—it's cheap and easy.
It's basically a huge cluster of tiny, low-power dedicated cloud servers.

Bob
@DragonLord Depends if what you're doing scales horizontally.
My SP-64 is definitely overpowered for what I'm usually running, but I like knowing I have enough power to spin up a (Terraria) game server when I need to.
Pity it's in the US, so I can't run some other games...

@Bob Yeah, high lag (you're in Australia) :(
Rather heavy for your application. $110 a month.
You sure you need this much compute?

Bob
2:42 AM
@DragonLord Mine's a 2014 SP-64.
@DragonLord I've needed to run simulations in the past.
A Terraria med-large world can max out one or two cores.
I'm usually running 6+ VMs on there.
@DragonLord Actually, the main reason I went there is because I can get IPs easily.

As for me, I have two Linode 1GB instances. $20 a month total.
One for my website, one for experimental "cloud desktop" stuff.
Both instances are in the Newark, New Jersey (US East) datacenter.
Each Linode has one core, 1 GB RAM, 24 GB SSD storage, and 125 Mbit outbound bandwidth with 2 TB of transit. (Inbound transit is unmetered and runs at the full 40 Gbit of the host machine.)
Contention is remarkably low on the new Linodes.
KVM virtualization (new!) for higher performance and the ability to run arbitrary operating systems (not yet fully supported).

Bob
I now have a /27 IPv4 block, so I can assign each VM its own IPv4 address.
Much much nicer than the dodgy NAT I was doing before.
@DragonLord I'm running far more than that...
Gitlab, JIRA are somewhat demanding.
Terraria is very demanding when it's up.
ffsync is pretty lightweight
Doing some fuzztesting on some programs too.
Got an IPv6 tunnel (very light)
Was planning to set up a blog (perhaps with a Discourse forum), email server, DNS server, etc..
There's a lot running on this server.

@Bob That's a lot of IPs. 32 of them.

Bob
@DragonLord 30 usable
But, yes, a lot.

Wow. You're doing pretty much everything in the cloud.
No wonder why you need a big dedicated server.

Bob
2:56 AM
@DragonLord This ain't a "cloud" :P

Yeah, not really cloud, can't scale out as easily as you would with VPSes

Bob
@DragonLord I was looking for raw power, flexibility and storage.

I chose Linode because I wanted a reasonably-priced cloud hosting solution with the ability to scale up and out easily.
Modest demands for the time being, but you never know...
Linode has eight datacenters, but the Tokyo one is constantly sold out with no more capacity available from the colocation provider.

Bob
@DragonLord I started with VPSes.
Was quickly constrained by CPU limitations.

Linode's CPUs are only slightly oversold. Performance is generally very consistent.
It helps that their host machines (at least the newer KVM ones) have a total of 2P/24C/48T (2x Xeon E5-2680 v3).
Xen-based instances will remain available for a while; these run on slightly older 2P/20C/40T servers (2x Xeon E5-2680 v2).
However, the newest datacenter (Frankfurt, Germany) only has KVM instances.

3:26 AM
I can't think of any better place to ask this, as I don't have enough rep to make a Meta post, and the StackExchange meta seems too broad. I'm trying to edit an answer that suggests a command, and there's an important distinction between two very similar commands; one is kstart, the other is kstart5 - I need to add two characters to the answer to fix it, but the editor requires I add at least six. Unless I were to spam a bunch of semicolons, I can't get that many changed characters.

Vultr is another cloud VPS host and their approach is a bit different. Very similar to Linode, though slightly cheaper. Their systems use high-clocked CPUs without overselling, which means that CPU-intensive workloads perform exceptionally well on the Vultr platform. However, they provide less transit and their disks are a bit slower.

Is there anything I can do about this, or am I just screwed since I have 0 rep on this site

One character or two?

both kquitapp and kstart need a 5 added onto the end

Done.

3:29 AM
thanks

Bob
@AesenVismea If the rest of the post is absolutely perfect, one method is to add an HTML comment (<!-- blah -->)
Or leave a comment on the post so the original answerer can fix it
@DragonLord Unfortunately, some of my workloads will peg a CPU.
Not good for a VPS.

3:49 AM
Vultr instances are optimized for game server workloads, which demand high CPU performance and low latency (which is why they have guaranteed 3+ GHz CPUs as many as 14 datacenters)

Bob
@DragonLord Still pretty expensive for limited resources and not much flexibility.

Damn it @fixer1234, rollbacking is totally a word!
(Sounds awfully bad though ;)

@AesenVismea if I knew what the command was, I'd fix it for you. However I donno if kstart or kstart5 is correct.
tho, I'm too late, and that seems logcal ;p
(also, if you know that, clearly you should post some awesome answers and get some reputation ;p)

4:14 AM
It's been over a day since I notified a moderator that I was being serial downvoted and there's been no change.
Also, I've now been question banned.
And now I just got a bunch of upvotes on SO.. the wrong site

That was me.
Your activity is really weird. I do see an unusual downvote pattern on your record; not sure why.
I've upvoted three of your better questions in an attempt to get you out of the question ban.
I can't just upvote everything, though, as that would be serial voting.

Yes that worked.

I'd probably suggest contacting team@stackexchange.com to get the serial downvoting reversed.

@Clearquestionwithexamples: I contacted team for you
Unfortunately the timing is not that great and they're at some kind of meeting
Unfortunately whatever happened to you did not get caught by the automatic system, and I'll bug them again as soon as they're active again

4:24 AM
(We're not ignoring you or anything, honest!)

It's the most I can do, lest my votes get reversed and I get in trouble for serial voting.
My suggestion is to try to use proper capitalization and better formatting. This will make your posts easier to read.
Whatever you did, however, did not deserve serial downvoting.

@DragonLord: Agreed

Yes, thank you @DragonLord

But mods can't reverse that manually

All I did was flag a question as duplicate

4:27 AM
You do also have a lot of deleted questions tho
which might have contributed to the question ban

How many do I have?

Note that I can't see deleted posts on user pages; only ♦moderators can do that.

6 of 14
I'd be happy to link them to you if you wish

4:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek The question ban has already been lifted due to my upvotes but having a buffer zone is a good idea.

Do I need to ask good questions for that to happen?

Your post score is a (rough) indication of your post quality. Post good questions and they should be upvoted.

superuser.com/questions/963399/… superuser.com/questions/958783/… could be improved and I have no idea why you deleted them
superuser.com/questions/746118/… should have gotten more attention from you when people asked for more information
Quality questions never hurt anyone ;)
and answers of course.

superuser.com/questions/963399/…: Edited and voted to undelete.

4:33 AM
I would rather post answers. And those old questions are really bad.
The ones about Chrome, I resolved a few seconds after posting and thought they weren't worth keeping

@Clearquestionwithexamples In that case, post an answer to your own question.

Yea, Chrome doesn't support FTPS if I remember correctly

You just need to wait 48 hours after you posted the question before you can accept your own answer.

4:53 AM
Lots of fun, 'soft' questions today ^^

Not sure why my answer is not getting any upvotes.
Perhaps because I'm competing with a mod's answer?

Nope
My theory? Its all about the first line.
You use absolute terms a lot. "It is always"
and the bold seems shouty
I have a 'hook'

> It is a beautiful utterly elegant hack

I guess I'm revising my answer format once more.

4:57 AM
People expect ugly hacks
Well, I write for my audience.

I'm not good at baiting users. I really don't like the whole concept of clickbait.

Well, I cheat fair

However, there's probably thousands of points of untapped reputation simply because of my answer style.

I write the answers I want to read

I may be editing multiple older posts to make this change; do not be alarmed if you get an autoflag indicating lots of edits.

4:59 AM
@DragonLord: It isn't really an exact science.

Guess it's time to abandon Thaddeus's post format.

and well, the trick really is to write the sort of article you want to read
So for me its 'small' paragraphs. Basic explainations (with a hook), details, summation.
I also make effective use of what you'd term 'clickbait', but really, the use of images, and hooks is because I feel its a much better teaching tool

A: How do I determine whether a drive is an HDD or SSD in Windows 8?

DragonLordActually, there's a much simpler solution. Windows Drive Optimizer (formerly Disk Defragmenter) reports whether a drive is an HDD or SSD. You can access this utility by pressing Windows+S, searching for "optimize", and selecting Defragment and optimize your drives. This will generally work in...

This is an older answer of mine which does this.
Perhaps I should just revert back to this old style?
I take answer quality very seriously.

Well, its up to you

Do we unfreeze this room to discuss this matter further?

 Post Quality Advice and Tips

If you're looking to improve the quality of your questions and...
My focus is on readability first and foremost.
I made the change precisely because answers like this, as detailed as they may be, are walls of text that are difficult to read.

5:17 AM
I just want to write clear, understandable, and detailed answers.

The thing is writing answers is a soft skill
Its not something that's got rules that have hard and fast rules

No need to unfreeze that room.

Bob
5:54 AM
@Clearquestionwithexamples Last time I emailed team about serial downvotes, it took 4-5 days before a response. You probably just need to wait a bit.
@JourneymanGeek Completely agreed - I feel @DragonLord overuses bold a bit in his answers.
Of course, nothing wrong with that, but that's how I feel when I read them.
My answers tend to be a bit chatty.
But I don't really have a fixed answer format.

Curious about why this answer style was adopted? See the linked (frozen) chat room above.

Bob
Going through some of my higher-scored answers, if they get long I usually chuck a summary paragraph or bullet list up the top.

Look back at the beginning of the transcript.
I had some very long answers with TL;DR sections, but this was before I adopted Thaddeus's format.

Bob
@DragonLord I'd say that coule benefit from some headings.
Categorisation of data is useful.
Bolding whole paragraphs just hurts the eyes and makes it sound a bit forceful.

This is the longest answer in the new format: superuser.com/questions/543702/…

6:00 AM
@DragonLord Great answer

Bob
@DragonLord I think you have your formatting mixed around.
You're using headings for emphasis (bad!) and bold for headings (???).

I'm just following Thaddeus's lead, with some minor changes.

Bob
The increased font size definitely increases the shoutiness.

That's part of the point I'm trying to make really ;p
A formula that works for someone else (on another site) may not work for you here.

Bob
@DragonLord You'll note he does exactly the opposite.
He uses headings for headings and bold for emphasis.

6:02 AM
Thaddeus uses loads of images and quotes; this is evident in some of my newer answers.

Bob
@DragonLord He answers on scifi. Different focus.
Don't force images in where they don't fit.

It's not as easy to put images into every answer on Super User, so I certainly don't force it. I'm well aware of that.

(and my style on say, SR or HR would be different)

Bob
Someone wanting to get an answer to a technical question will appreciate brief diagrams and images. They generally won't like giant posts full of images.
On scifi, however, not only do you have more images available but they also lend useful character to the post.

6:04 AM
@Bob ...and that is reflected on the CPU performance answer I linked above.

Bob
@DragonLord Another reason to use the correct formatting: semantic correctness is important for web accessibility.
Screenreaders will treat headings specially.
And might read "strong" (bold) text different.

in Post Quality Advice and Tips, Dec 18 '14 at 17:28, by Thaddeus
Read through some of your posts and found the information held within to be viable but not easily analysed. Go for smaller chunks of text, isolate the main points, use section headers to break out big ideas, or specific vendors. Use infographics to support your work. Good graphics (flowcharts are great for processes) can make a big difference.

Bob
@DragonLord The point I'm trying to make to you right now is you should use headings for headings, not for emphasis.
Even if you don't change anything else, at least do that!
Most of writing a post is your own choice of style.
However, unless you have a particularly good reason not to, using the semantically correct tags helps accessibility.
Don't claim to be following Thaddeus' post style as an excuse - he doesn't mix them up!

@JourneymanGeek (per Bob's claims): Suspend me.
I'm not kidding.

6:12 AM
superuser.com/questions/986313/why-cant-you-run-os-x-on-a-pc/… this is pretty hillarious. This came up in the queue for something. I thought it looked familiar...

Bob
@DragonLord ...that's no reason to...

@DragonLord: There's no precedent for requesting a suspension. And well, it dosen't fix anything at all
So.. no, not happening.

It's okay if my rep shows up as 1 for a day.
I need a break.
(Do I want to leave a permanent black mark on my record?)

You take a break.
Turn off your computer, unplug the cord, and go for a walk or something
People do that.

Bob
shrug it's not a particularly big problem if you don't want to change anything. All I said above is just my two cents; my opinion.
Not everyone will agree.
And it's certainly no reason to take drastic action.

6:15 AM
Yup

Bob
DragonLord, if you feel you need a break: Go take a nap. Or read a book. Or just listen to some music.
In fact, a nap sounds great right now (I really need better sleep patterns...)

;p
I've been up since 5.30
Someone keeps waking up early for walkies.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You shouldn't speak of yourself in the third person :P

What the hell am I doing?

@Bob: I do not walk myself. ;p
@DragonLord: Honestly? Being overdramatic, again.

6:20 AM
Well, there's going to be lots of question marks if the community finds that DragonLord has 1 rep...
Everyone is going to ask, "why is DragonLord suspended?"

Yup, which is 1) over dramatic 2) attention seeking
Which is why you're not going to get suspended on request

I just have this tendency to panic.
Alright, nothing happened. Contributions will continue as normal.
Back to the review queues...

@DragonLord No offense, but you do that... a lot. Like, probably close to 8 or 9 times now. It makes you come off as a bit of a drama queen. When you're feeling like posting something like that in the future, just take a deep breath, sleep on it, and come back tomorrow and keep grinding. You'll probably feel better after you sleep on it. You seem to overreact to your own feelings.
Let's set up another room. I want to do some soul searching to find out why I tend to demand attention.
I know I should be in bed by now, but I can't let myself do this again. I just can't.
It's ruining my reputation as a valued contributor.
I'm not going to bed without knowing why I'm doing this.
If this means I won't get any sleep tonight, so be it.

Don't set up another room, just think about it
Setting up another room is also a call for attention

Any pointers? You might want to search the chat transcript.
I can't set a bad example for the community.
I would hate to be elected and continue to do things like this.
Any community member who is freaking out like this periodically is not worthy of the diamond.

My behavior is the exact opposite of this.
Ideas, anyone?
(At least my activity on Super User proper doesn't reflect this, but still...)
I think this might be the answer: I have low self-esteem.
I'm not easily pleased, and I'm dependent on others to validate my performance.
My difficult upbringing, especially in elementary school, has left me always needing support.

@DragonLord: Funny thing that. I find I perform best when my validation's internal

I'm really a little child inside.

Worrying about what other people think is stressful
My question is always is "is this what i think is good enough?"

6:47 AM
I take the quality of my posts seriously. Too seriously.

You take what people think of your posts too seriously.
There's a difference.

I'm too concerned about pleasing others.
My past is riddled with serious behavioral issues and repeated detention incidents in school.

All of a sudden it seems like every question that I've commented on or answered appears light blue on the SU homepage. Am I going crazy or have I really never seen that before?

@DragonLord: I spent 2 years stuck at home due to social anxiety.
@Insane: I thought its always been like that.

(Ohhh, ohp. Yeah, that's because I just added favorite tags like 5 minutes ago. Guess that's what those do.)

6:51 AM
ahh THOSE light blues.
So, meh. You can eventually sort yourself out.

I just about had a panic attack

@Insane those questions contain your favourited tags

I did see a psychologist

As I grew increasingly frustrated over my behavioral issues, I grew a fervent desire to overcome them. I kept trying and failing and trying and failing...

@DragonLord: Which is why I mentioned a professional.

6:53 AM
This cycle continues to this day.

Getting over stuff like that often need specific stratergies.
If CBT hadn't helped, I'd probably have gone on medication.

It's less intense these days as things are slowly improving, but it still shows up once in a while.
This is why you see these "drama queen" responses every now and then.
I'm weighted down by my troubled past, always wanting to gain control over myself and my actions, but I can't seem to get anywhere... :'(
*sob*

It's just not my day. (Sorry to distract from the deep conversation going)

@Insane: ;p
I would say that, but I also had a question nuked in the middle of an answer

It happened to me the other day but the person deleted his question (probably because of downvotes). I spent like 20 minutes seeing If I could contact him to actually give him the answer lol

7:00 AM
(also... that HTG thing "Wait, I've seen that question before. Wait. I got quoted... whaaaaat? He quoted a quote and... quoteception)
@DragonLord thing is, this is a cycle.
Are you getting help for that?

Yeah I feel bad for stealing that rep. When I actually saw your name on the HowToGeek article I was like "Huh, that's fancy. They interviewed him". But I guess not

@JourneymanGeek ?

I love the casual "(not thrilled about it either)" thrown in that post. Laughing too hard.

Bob
7:07 AM
@Insane ...I don't get it.

@Bob The question is just so obscure, it's just funny to me.

This is my end goal.
Always calm, never out of control.
> Training one's self to be "deliberately stoic" in order to shunt away emotional reactions can be an effective, non-pharmaceutical defense against anxiety, panic, and phobic disorders.
> In essence, shoving one's emotional reactions aside (be it gently or forcefully) allows the more calmly rational mind to take over control of the reactions until the episode passes, and can also lessen the chances of the amygdala "hijacking" the brain and causing an explosive activation of the "fight or flight" response.

THat might also cause you to get stressed out.

I've experimented with this a few times. When correctly implemented, the difference is dramatic.

@allquixotic I'm starting a massive personal project to overhaul my personal conduct and personality, just as if I was rewriting a major software application. It is my intention that the "DragonLord" you'll see a few months from now will be an entirely different person than the "DragonLord" you're seeing today.
Hasn't happened... yet.
But if I pull this off consistently... everything changes.

I mean actual professional help.
I know, there's a bit of a stigma about seeing a professional for psycological issues

7:18 AM
It's not really a stigma more than it's practical issues.

I had to deal with that.
I saw mine like...
once every few months.

I can't disclose much more on why, but it's not really practical for me to do this.

If you want to fix things, its seriously worth considering.

I see a counselor on campus every week.
I don't intend to change this.

I'll just bring it up at the next scheduled session.
Maximum self-control is the reason I care about being stoic.
Because self-control means everything.
This is proof:
The Stanford marshmallow experiment was a series of studies on delayed gratification in the late 1960s and early 1970s led by psychologist Walter Mischel, then a professor at Stanford University. In these studies, a child was offered a choice between one small reward provided immediately or two small rewards if they waited for a short period, approximately 15 minutes, during which the tester left the room and then returned. (The reward was sometimes a marshmallow, but often a cookie or a pretzel.) In follow-up studies, the researchers found that children who were able to wait longer for the preferred...
