loooool
just had a user reply all to a company wide email about patching Win7 and Win8 devices asking when his PC would be upgraded to Win7

@OliverSalzburg :D

2:18 AM

2:35 AM
@MichaelFrank: If my system ran windows XP, I'd reply all on purpose too!

lol

2:52 AM
@JourneymanGeek This email probably went to more than 10,000 people :P

Dude. XP

It's a bank... There are soooooooooooo many applications that don't run on a modern OS that are critical to BAU.

And there are sooooooooo many ways to exploit xp :)

@HackToHell Assuming you can get access. ;)

2:58 AM
@HackToHell Cute.

:P
ta da

3:27 AM
So Windows is going to start integrating ads for apps…. everywhere.

hi

@user965347 Hi

anyway i trid to post in SO
but it said it doesnt meet quality standard
here is the question
"i installed rsnapshot but i want to backup directly without schedule, i mean command to do backup without waiting

i tried to seek the information from its official website
but it only have the information about scheduled backup. what i tried to found is simple command to do backup in that time just once

how can i do that? is there any command to do backup without schedule?
"

Do you want a one-time backup? or an on-demand backup?

one time
whats differences?
for example i execute in terminal "backup /dev/sda1' and it created snapshot
is there any way to do that?

4:32 AM
@user965347: that's cause that's not what rsnapshot is meant to do.
The first backup is essentially a full backup. Then you'd run additional planned backups which are snapshots/incremental backups
There's better ways for one time backups

Q: Setting up Rsnapshot for casual manual backup?

DanijelI am confused with new Rsnapshot configuration. In current version there is a different way of specifiying backup intervals, like so: retain hourly 2 retain weekly 7 retain monthly 2 I would like to do a manual backup few times a month. I'd like to have 3 archives saved. How should I set up ...

or this

@JourneymanGeek Thanks lol I was super lost and didn't want to respond. :P

@MichaelFrank: combination of working tech support and google-fu ;p

5:03 AM
(and for all my complaints about them, the school I studied EE in and dropped out had one hell of a module on research)

Q: April 2015 Community Moderator Election Results

Shog9Stack Overflow's 6th moderator election has come to a close, the votes have been tallied, and the 3 new moderators are: They'll be joining the existing crew shortly — please thank them for volunteering, and share your assistance and advice with them as they learn the ropes! For details on ...

> Bill has been the archetype for what a moderator on Stack Exchange should be. His patient, fair and calm demeanor even in the face of criticism is legendary; his diligence and skill in handling the numerous difficult problems that face Stack Overflow users are inspiring.
The argument over whether to suspend a particular user network-wide a couple of days ago should never have occurred.

@DragonLord: You're getting worked up over one insignificant user ;p
I am very, very sorry for this.
This is precisely what a moderator is never supposed to do.
2 days ago, by DragonLord
The user has no intention to contribute in good faith.
Is this an acceptable reaction? NO.
!!/no

2 days ago, by DragonLord
You can have a thousand spam flags, 100k reputation, and a hundred gold badges and still be a bad mod.
Sadly, I would probably make a bad mod, especially if I were to be elected right now.
As much as I enjoy contributing to and helping maintain Super User, I just lack the community-building skills to do the job right.

I reaaaaaally want to click this...
But fuck that title. -_-

I find myself so rash and impulsive at times...
Nov 16 '14 at 6:57, by DragonLord
I'm usually well-behaved online, but sometimes my lack of self-control gets to me.
"Usually" is not enough. A moderator represents his or her community. One slip could give a bad impression to thousands of users.
What are your thoughts? I'm working on improving my self-control IRL which will probably propagate to cyberspace, but please tell me what specific concerns you might have with my recent conduct.

I've never thought about it ;p

5:59 AM
I've run for moderator twice, and not running during the next election is going to raise a lot of question marks.

Not really ;p

Then again, the diamond isn't as huge a deal as it once was to me.

I've stood for one SF election. No one asked why I didn't stand the last two.. or three maybe

I'm just contributing as I have before, only at a slightly faster pace.
I think the real issue is that I'm getting too worried about making mistakes.
As you've said yourself, I'll just let the diamond come naturally.

@DragonLord: As a normal user, its pretty hard to fuck up that badly
As a mod, you have a slight learning curve, but its actually easier on a bigger site since you have other mods.

6:03 AM
My focus is on real contributions that make a difference to the people here who need help with computer stuff.

I quite literally just do answers cause 1) I know the answer. 2) I can find the answer, and it interests me

@JourneymanGeek, I really have to thank you for your mentoring since around last November. I have learned a lot from you and I would not have gotten this far without you.
Good night, it's 2 AM here in New York.

@DragonLord: I'd hardly consider it mentoring. You go exactly where and however far you wanna go ;p

You have been very kind and patient and I have benefited immeasurably from you.
Thank you.

aww. Tried to install VS code on my work box. Apparently glibc on centos 6.5 is too old :/

11:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek Looks nice... amazon.com/gp/product/B008CBH7I2

11:45 AM
Maybe. Not really my kinda pen tho :p

1 hour later…
12:49 PM
woof

> Fork to pull in perfectly valid pull requests that upstream didn't want to merge or ignored for some reason
I wonder how many of those there are on GH

1:16 PM
GH?

hmm, the whole Windows 10 Universal app platform is.... interesting, but I hope one leg of the "universal" is .NET Native -> .exe that runs on Win7/Win8/Win8.1/Win10
@JourneymanGeek github

1:32 PM
Blah, I wonder if I overthink when I get myself stuff ;p

1 hour later…
2:35 PM
@JourneymanGeek lol
@JourneymanGeek such as?

@allquixotic: Pondering getting a kindle to read books on on the way to work
(and putting off the monitor purchase a while, but the nice thing there is I've got roughly a grand in fun money stashed away over 4 months of working)

@JourneymanGeek I got my mom a Kindle Paperwhite for xmas and she loves it

;p
(this is what comes from being poor for the last decade or so ;p)
Well not poor poor

I was gonna say, you sound like you're better off than the guys living in row homes in Baltimore :P

;p
(I was making 300 bucks a month including transport, I'm taking a little under 2K now ;p)
My actual salary is more, but there's the whole state mandated retirement fund thing and all that.

2:42 PM
I'm making about the same if you're converting those to USD for me

naw
local money

putting a lot away into a 401k

but I get paid 13 months

special kind of retirement account

Well, I want a bit more of a cash buffer before I start looking at investing some of it.

2:43 PM
hmm
converted 2000 sgd to usd, and I definitely make more, but not loads more

But when I want to buy stuff for myself I'm still in the "I only make 300 a month" mindset ;p

most people in my industry in the US make loads more than me

:/
I'm happy where I am, workwise ;p
(something my mom comments on ;p)

You are going to get married, aren't you ?

it isn't uncommon for people in the U.S. to make 5300 SGD per month, or more, working in IT/software/testing

2:45 PM
@HackToHell: I know right? Then its PAF to WAF.
@HackToHell: I have a year then my parents start looking.

What happens after you guys get into a stable job(and get married if you are indian) ?
What's the goddamn point of it all
@JourneymanGeek lol

Depends on the mrs I guess, and how stubborn you are ;p

Mrs.JMG better have a cat ;p

;p
Unlikely

@JourneymanGeek so your parents go down to the local kennel and look for female wauzers and go "oh, she looks nice; does she have fleas?" etc? :P

2:47 PM
Ultimately you just die
I still don't understand the entire point of this

@allquixotic: hm, suprisingly accurate. And occationally you end up with one's who's the wrong kinda bit... ;p

@allquixotic It's very much like that

@HackToHell: There's 3 options really.

And those are

You can go fuck it all, and not marry, go do it yourself, which happens, or go oldschool
1 and 3 are obvious options.

2:48 PM
@HackToHell the entire point is to be happy, basically, while we're here

I don't really have anyone I'd run away with, metaphorically speaking ;p

@JourneymanGeek option 1 is what I've chosen
besides, RA regulars except @ThatBrazilianGuy are not allowed to have S.O.s

@allquixotic: heh, considering some family drama as of late... yeah.
@allquixotic: I'll try to find a geeky girl ;p

@JourneymanGeek that might make it slightly more acceptable

Isn't life sorta pointless

2:50 PM
@HackToHell: entirely.
We're all GONNA DIEEEE.

@HackToHell sure; since the entire "goal" of all life is to survive, and make more lifey things in the universe, so that eventually life can be "everywhere" in the universe and never die even when stars go supernova and galaxies get eaten by black holes
and we don't know if we're ever gonna get there and it'll all be happening long after we're gone anyway

And contributing something to the world is waaaay harder than I thought, there's always something/somone better

and who knows, maybe some of the cosmologists who think the universe will have a "big crush" are right, and then it doesn't matter what we do

This is why dogs are smart ;p
Dogs live for now ;p

apes are the real dumb ones; we think about the future, which causes a rush of blood to the head and general fear and confusion
if you let it happen it can overwhelm you

2:52 PM
(or the next morning, when there's a chance to convince the grandparents to bring one along for a ride)

@allquixotic perhaps like the Foundation world

Dogs and cats get a lot of things right ;p

@HackToHell that doesn't matter, though; contributing what you can is important, and trying to contribute more than you have before

I don't even think about that, like I told DL ;p
I'm not going to change the world, or a life. I can probably brighten up someone's day for five minutes or so ;p

@allquixotic Happens every now and then

2:54 PM
(and I do everyday I come home from work XD)

@allquixotic That's all I can do really

well, at the end of the day, we still have eachother here :D

Perhaps someday I'll be good enough

grouphug @Bob @JourneymanGeek @HackToHell

@allquixotic If SE is wiped off the face of the planet

2:55 PM
we can get our respective furs on each other ;p

How to contact other people ?
:P

We just email whoever we can and turn up on IRC ;p

@HackToHell a lot of us are on a Gitter.im room

@allquixotic and huggie :P

2:55 PM
also, yeah, if everyone here knows at least one email address of another regular RA'er, we'll be fine
I know a bunch

Oli's is ridiculously easy ;p

(or just look for me on freenode)

oliver.salzburg at that generous, free mail service by GOOG
mine's smcnam at that generous, free mail service by GOOG

mine's faileas.greywolf at the same

2:58 PM
thinking about it I already know a lot of you people's email id o0
Mine's s_gowtham @ microsoft's live site .com

lol
precisely

@HackToHell making sure your email address is secure and safe, eh?

Basically replicating what you did

the _s suffix (yours is a prefix, but whatever) on C standard library functions means "hey, use me! I'm more secure than the non-_s prefix!"

3:00 PM
Oh you meant that
nvm

oh, and unless I change jobs

And I already have you people added on pretty much every social network

also rnm AT dneg DOT the continent I live in ;p

I think I have Gowthie on linked-in, IIRC

3:01 PM
Yes ;D

I need to update linkedin ;p

someone who hasn't updated linkedin in a while is linkedout?
bad joke

lol
(and pondering mentioning my employer in my profile, briefly)

American comics suck
Japanese manga is so bloody awesome <3

a lot of "geeks" here love our comics, but I'm not one of them

3:04 PM
lol
I don't read comics
I read graphic novels
tho very few ;p

I "play" visual novels

I tend to pick up the collected issues of the fuse.

I love ren'py games

I am totally addicted to them now :/

3:05 PM
Finished reading the entire Naruto series(700 volumes)
At about half of One Piece
The TV series they release is also fucking perfect

I love actual books but both our local borders, and page one (local book distributor who had the best sci fi secion ever) closed
so we just have kino, who're ok

Naruto had me crying every season :.

But I just end up picking up baen bundles, and the occational novel
@HackToHell: we have a japanese bookstore with a manga section ;p

Now that I have a vehicle I should probably go hunt for old books
@JourneymanGeek BUY EM ALL
or install MangaRock

wait, doesn't that one online game shop also have manga?

3:07 PM
And there's a book rental/sale place in my office building
lol

@HackToHell as I mentioned, I've been trying to decide whether I should get a kindle the past few days ;p
I use sumatra on windows for CBR reading ;p

@JourneymanGeek I don't think that works on the kindle :D

lol
naw, for ebooks

I remeber someone mumblng about it somehwere

3:09 PM
I have a pretty big collection of legal ebooks ;p

@JourneymanGeek which kindle you looking at?
not the Kindle Fire I hope

naw
paperwhite

that's the best one imo

(with ads, without ads? I wanna get a case)

got my mom's without "special offers"
because fuck that

3:11 PM
Yeah ;p
I think the big things that are stopping me are that its a single use device - but one that does its one thing fantastically well, and whether I'd use it enough.

the nice thing about the paperwhite is you can read it in all kinds of lighting conditions, unlike the non-paperwhite eInk readers
and its battery still lasts a very long time

oh?
ahh, cause of the backlight?

yeah, the paperwhite has a backlight
but it's basically just a small LED
it'd be incredible if they could make color eInk with at least a 30fps refresh rate... like IPS except doesn't use energy when the screen isn't refreshing o_O

lol
it would

3:40 PM
Google Now's best feature has to be package tracking, so damn usefel

1 hour later…
5:03 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ran into that on my work box as well. glibc on Scientific Linux 6 is too old. :( Might have to try to do a local install of an updated glibc and point VS Code to it.
@JourneymanGeek I have a first gen Kindle Paperwhite. I bought my mom a second gen. They are awesome.
@JourneymanGeek I use my Kindle a lot. It's my primary reading device these days.
@JourneymanGeek I can use the Kindle app on my phone or Surface Pro, and I do sometimes, but I prefer to just use the Kindle, because the e-ink screen is just better for that.

5:37 PM
Hit the rep cap again, will see what I can do.

@BenRichards Sorry, I wasn't able to run the tests last night

5:59 PM
hello all
I have to update records at work through an html interface. Can I automate some of this with VBA and/or Powershell? Trying to gain a sense of what would be more straightforward before I tackle learning more.

6:16 PM
@BradyTrainor sure, you can use Selenium, Awesomium, PhantomJS, SlimerJS, tons of possible options... without any external dependencies you can automate IE using VBA with the IE automation API

@allquixotic, thank you. do I need install rights? I have things like emacs right now because I can use without installing.

by "install rights" I assume you mean "admin rights"... with most programs, you can extract the installer to obtain the raw files and copy them to a directory somewhere and run them, even if the installer purports to require admin rights
the only time you'd actually need admin rights is if the program needs to load a kernel module, but none of those programs would need to

hmm, okay, thank you.

quite a few of those are distributed as a simple .zip file, so you just download, extract and run
of course, if you use VBScript or VBA to automate IE, you aren't even obtaining a new program; you're just writing and running code
there's a whole industry built up around browser automation, primarily for automated testing of websites (I work in this industry myself), but you can also use it for a "practical purpose" to drive a website UI automatically to save yourself some time
that's why Selenium is such a hugely popular project
just don't expect it to be more than it is; a lot of people naively ask the most ridiculous questions about Selenium, expecting it to be an end-all, be-all solution to every problem

What sort of things do they expect of it?

6:23 PM
Selenium sends instructions to web browsers to make them automatically perform operations on webpages; that's all it does; it does not print PDFs, it does not edit mainframe passwords, it does not make toast, it does not fly airplanes

sure, I've been using emacs for a year now, so I can dig the "get what you can out of it in a finite amount of time and move on" thing

@yilduz you should read the mailing lists for selenium sometime; it's pretty pathetic
even my non-technical bosses regularly get tripped up asking if Selenium can perform XYZ type of testing
"how can I execute SQL queries using Selenium?"
YOU IDIOT, YOU CAN'T

Selenium was used at my last job for certain tasks. I knew what it did there, but I wasn't privileged enough to get to play with the stuff that the cool kids got to play with. So I haven't learned much about it, but I'm curious.

Selenium is like a nail of a specific size in a toolbox with 20 different sizes of nails, a saw, a hammer, a sledgehammer, glue, etc.
for some reason people latch onto the name and think it's some kind of monolithic do-all, and wonder why they can't cut a 2x4 board with a 3" nail

I bet I could cut a 2x4 with a nail.

6:35 PM
lol

1 hour later…
8:02 PM
woof. Blah, I keep waking up at 4am

Funny, my kid kept all of us up until 4:30am...

Looks like I missed another opportunity as the top answer has 41 votes on it:

Q: Why do PCs still require a CMOS battery, even though PCs runs on electricity?

Joseph PhilipsonWhy do PCs still require a CMOS battery, even though PCs runs on electricity? We are providing lots of power to the PC by switching CPU plug to our electric board, so why does it still require a CMOS battery?

9:16 PM
@DragonLord but on your answer, it is understood that one does not loose the "software" (firmware) But the blasted settings still go away without the battery (on a desktop or laptop). Which brings up With all the advancements they have made , why do they not store the settings in some kinda flash stuff? and the ramifications of that, when people have been so used to being told to "remove the battery" when almost all of them have a jumper to clear that without removal.

@CanadianLuke That's ok. You can email me back with the results if you want. It might be easier than communicating here over that time.

@Psycogeek That's literally what the first answer says...

You have indicated that the "settings" will stay apon battery removal on modern computers, but people still seems to be clearing them on modern computers by removing tha battery.
The first answer seems to be correct in that aspect. DL was trying to write a more comprehensive answer , wherein it is pretty cool to indicate that all the TechWords we are using when discussing that , have been basically wrong :-) since it all changed , but we still apply the same wording so people know what we are talking about.

@Psycogeek In order to reset the BIOS settings on motherboards within the past few years, in my experience, you had to short a jumper or switch in order to reset the settings. I don't believe removing the battery is enough anymore.
I know that you used to be able to by removing the battery. I don't believe that's the case anymore though.

@BenRichards cool so they have made that progress.

9:25 PM
I don't know when this change occurred.

probably when flash storage got cheap enough ;p

I know the smaller mobile devices are applying fully different methods from the origins too, using nand flash .

Some motherboards designed with overclocking in mind (like mine) let you reset the BIOS settings by pressing a button on the back panel, and if it doesn't automatically detect a failed overclock and revert to defaults by itself. :)

lol
I think my old palm m515 was rom + ram

Oh yea that is one more, the crashing post providing the ability for the user to reset without messing with any of that.

9:27 PM
so you'd loose anything on it if the power went out

I remember we had a couple old 386 laptops that ran DOS 6.0 and Win 3.11 for Workgroups, and to change its CMOS settings, you had to run a DOS program after booting. Apparently it didn't have enough on-board memory to store the CMOS settings program. :P
I really wish I remembered what brand/model it was. I can't find it mentioned online, to this day.
My parents got rid of them, usually without telling me (as they always did with old computers)
I should draw it and then maybe someone might recognize it :P Sometime. Not now.

lol
/me actually needs to get rid of some old computers ._.
nothing nostalgic/cool tho

We had my grandfather's old IBM XT. No more though :(
buckling spring ftw

So what years did they change from bios settings needing power to be kept, and that stuff now being stored on flash? Would it likely be the same time they changed the software(firmware) to UEFI type ?

@Psycogeek That could be different per manufacturer or even motherboard model...

9:38 PM
Yeah probably different depending on manufacturer, but my motherboard is pre UEFI and I think it retains settings.

All this time i have been walking on eggshells when maintaincing that stuff , writing stuff down, changing the battery live , and it wasnt going anywhere :-P

Heh
It's been so long that I really don't remember at this point. So I'm curious if I try it myself, now.

@BenRichards I would... but overclock settings >.<

@MichaelFrank It'd be nice if you could dump those to external storage....
I can already store multiple overclock profiles.
Wonder if you can store them externally.

If you take the "post" crash oppertunity to reset thing, something like that might have been added , to assist in the change.

9:48 PM
I'm off, see ya

I can't believe I actually wrote as many as seven answers over the past week

10:09 PM
I wrote 7 answers a day when i first arrived here, before i realised what a bunch of dicks they can be.
I thought i was on Yahoo answers :-) and nobody was answering them anyways, so any answer was better than none.
If i had real balls, to be herassed by everyone, after they cant find any better answer themselves, I could probably still do 3-4 answers a day. then spend the next day, being herassed for not saying it well enough.
What also got really irritating was spending an hour answering something, to have it closed, downvoted (by people who did not create a better answer, or any answer) The question itself being closed for 101 stupid ass reasons. It is one thing to loosly write up "some" answer, it is another to have people doing NOTHING to help, to nuke everything you are doing.
Then after answering questions that nobody else cared about (had already dropped down) The persons asking them was already gone. The people hacking into them with editing and complaints , ohh they werent going anywhere :-)
So the answer never gets a real upvote, or a real accept, instead the editors could finnaly read it, and would toss ya a bone :-)

10:41 PM

Also answer a question quickly (for those extra votes) , that way by the time the question gets edited 5 times, nothing in your answer makes any sence , based on the question that was asked.

Aye
That is why I sometimes quotes part of the question

Ahh that is why people are applying that smart move.

11:01 PM
Draw your target after shooting the arrow, and it hits the bullseye everytime. AKA edit the question to match that stock answer you keep in your left pocket.

ffff. Kindles don't ship directly to singapore

Bob
11:23 PM
O_O

meh, its the principle of it
I can probably drop ship it or buy it locally

the principal of selling 100+ singapore specific books for it, but not allowing it to be bought

Shipping it via cgw would add ~15 dollars to my cost

11:43 PM
Possibly 5
