No questions asked policy means they cannot initiate persuasion process to retain you as a customer? We locally in communications companies have customer retainment departments where you get transferred to after initial persuasions to make you reconsider your decision. Once you get to the latter, you get transferred from on to another and they try to offer you things regular customers don't get to retain you as customer.

Hopefully with 60-day no questions asked policy in your country, you don't get to speak with those dickheads?
60-day no question asked policy = no hops to make you give up quitting company?

Bob
@Boris_yo They probably wouldn't bother (not that much staff in any store) - the main point is you can return it for change of mind, without needing any other reason (i.e. doesn't have to be broken)

@Bob What if it was already plugged into power mains? Locally this negates return of product. You can open package though. What good is it if I can't plug product into mains to see it functioning?

Nope =p

@ekaj Well, you now have 2 movies recommended by me and I don't recommend junk.

Well I will write down those names on one of my cryptic desktop notes

@ekaj Cryptic note? I use Evernote always.

Cryptic as in, when I look at my notes in the future, I have trouble understanding what they mean
I think I'm going to start using a simple portable notepad++ for notes

I think I should volunteer to work in computer lab in local universities. I am addicted to fixing hardware troubleshooting.

I do do that, I don't like it at all =p
I would rather play with the server administration side

9:13 AM
@ekaj Why you don't like it? Old computers?

Because I am not learning anything usually, it's just fixing Jane Doe's computer every time she drops it or taking printers apart that will never be fixed because they are ancient but we keep them stored under a desk nevertheless because one day, maybe just one day, we might need that spring on that roller in the back of the second paper tray or somethin
tl;dr I don't learn anything
but I know people who would hate to work with server and would instead just do hardware, it's just a preference.. I still think knowing about hardware is important
Is that what evernote generally looks like?

9:42 AM
@Boris_yo is English the only other language you know?

@ekaj Yes, that's Evernote.
@ekaj Main russian, secondary are english and hebrew. Was studying estonian before I immigrated to Israel.

I may give evernote a try, and that's really cool

Bob
@Boris_yo Those are CIDR notation
!!wiki CIDR

Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) is a method for allocating IP addresses and routing Internet Protocol packets. The Internet Engineering Task Force introduced CIDR in 1993 to replace the previous addressing architecture of classful network design in the Internet. Its goal was to slow the growth of routing tables on routers across the Internet, and to help slow the rapid exhaustion of IPv4 addresses. IP addresses are described as consisting of two groups of bits in the address: the most significant bits are the network address, which identifies a whole network or subnet, and the leas...

Bob
you can translate it to and from the subnet mask you usually see
it's pretty much just another way of writing it

basically it refers to a range of numbers ;p

@JourneymanGeek All numbers must be even?

Bob
...
dot dot dot

no, they all need to be between 0 to 255
since they represent a binary number

Bob
@Boris_yo I think he means the last number of the IP address, i.e. 192.168.2.0

@JourneymanGeek In SEO world, they like C-class IPs I hear but they say such are not often to come by. What about A-class IPs? Are these scarcer?

Bob
10:34 AM
A /32 in CIDR notation is equivalent to the subnet mask 255.255.255.255, i.e. it represents one address
A /24 is equivalent to 255.255.255.0, and represents 255 (256 including broadcast) addresses

these days we live in a classless society ;p
even when it comes to ip addresses ;p

Bob
192.168.1.0/24 would be from 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255

and I can't think of any legitimate reason SEO would have anything to do with ip address ranges

Bob
IIRC in that scenario 192.168.1.0 would be the identity and 192.168.1.255 would be the broadcast
@JourneymanGeek SEO, like the cake, is a lie

;p

Q: Token Ring Number of nodes in MAU

raghuwhy the token ring has limitation of 260 nodes per MAU using STP cables? How the number of nodes per MAU is calculated? I know we can use more than 260, but why IEEE-802.5 is Standardized it to 260 or 250?

this is a rather interestingly quaint question

Bob
10:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek token ring O.O
it's old enough that I have no bloody clue about it :P

@Bob Well, SEO is really what contributed to make Google as it is today in its infancy and Google no longer needs them.

Bob
@Boris_yo No.

Its old enough that I suspect being beaten with co-ax may be less painful than needing to maintain it

Bob
"SEO" (the lies! they burn!) has nothing to do with google
google wants natural algos and pages

10:38 AM
@Boris_yo: There's legitimate SEO - google has a page that tells you how to make your page search engine friendly, as does bing

Bob
they actively work against artificial "SEO"
@JourneymanGeek sitemaps and the like aren't usually what's advertised as "SEO"

at the end of the day though, google's interest lies in good relevant content. Anyone who tries SEO cheatcodes, so to speak runs counter to google's interests

Bob
Another way of saying it is proper SEO (which we might need another term for) makes it easy for search engines to identify the pages on a site
SEO that claims to raise your rank is generally very dodgy

@Bob SEO gave Google the needed sample and patterns to improve their algorith further.

@Boris_yo: bullcrap ;p
they're trying to game the system, or at the very least, get money off the gullible.

10:40 AM
@Bob Frankly, they want to make SEO so hard to pull businesses to PPC as it's how Google makes money. SEO is a bait sounding to require less investment.
@JourneymanGeek They are but they contributed their part I say in initial stages of SE evolution.

@Boris_yo: How so?

Bob
@Boris_yo ...no, they want to get rid of the dodgy "SEO" entirely because the results are more often than not completely unrelated and spammy bullshit

SE is a good example of 'proper' SEO - using micro-content, good, quality information and well designed websites.

@JourneymanGeek It was longer than 1 year I watched video about it.

not the same as vomiting links to your site everywhere.
I mean, most SEO is no different from throwing up in someone's shoes to get attention, then wondering why you got yelled at.

Bob
10:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek generally, the goal is to make your content discoverable to search engines, not to artificially raise your rank - let their own algos determine if your content is relevant
as they say, write for the humans, not the machines

@JourneymanGeek By SE I abbreviated search engine and not referred to StackExchange.

@Bob: precisely
@Boris_yo: UNCLEAR ABBREVIATION!

@JourneymanGeek There's now overoptimization penalty and SEO community has suffered from consequences of their specific spam.

Sorry to interrupt… does anyone know a little MATLAB?

Eh. I thought he was a dog.

@JourneymanGeek whoops

Bob
@slhck I know (and forgot) a little Maple... eh, try us?

2:17 PM
(though squeeky toys work as well)

This should be so damn simple, but I honestly can't find anything. I use this MATLAB clone called FreeMat and it doesn't have a sinc function.
Well, sinc is defined as sin(pi * t) / (pi * t), but only if t != 0 (of course, because else division by zero ZOMGNOES)
But how would I define that if t == 0 / else thing in one function?
sinc_t = sin(pi * t) / (pi * t)
That's what I have now :P
Of course it doesn't have ternary operators either.

user image
4

@Boris_yo That's sorta what's going on in my head now.

Bob
presumably something like if t == 0 return
or maybe better to throw an exception: mathworks.com.au/help/matlab/matlab_prog/…

Well, I'd write it as a full function with function but I can't even get it to accept a normal function definition without throwing an error.

Bob
2:22 PM
@slhck huh?

function y = sinc_t(t)
    if (t == 0)
        y = sin(pi * t) / (pi * t)
    else
        y = 0
    end
 Error: Undefined function or variable t

@slhck You have cat and mouse in your head?

But the reference explains it like that: freemat.sourceforge.net/help/functions_function.html
@Boris_yo Not literally.

Don't you hate when some internet website starts suddenly playing loud music and it's hard to find controls to turn it off?

Bob
@slhck you're missing an end, I think?
function y = average(x)
    if ~isvector(x)
        error('Input must be a vector')
    end
    y = sum(x)/length(x);
end

2:25 PM
@slhck Sure but I still don't understand.

Bob
that's an example

@Bob Unexpected input: end :P

Bob
@slhck I think you also need a semicolon in- waitwhat

@Boris_yo Well I'd rather think about cats than math.
Who wouldn't?
@Bob I think those only suppress immediate output.

Bob
@slhck you also have the two cases mixed up

2:30 PM
@Bob True that.

Bob
you have the y = sin(pi * t) / (pi * t) one when t ==0 :P

But it shouldn't matter at this stage. Thanks for the pointer though :P

Bob

@slhck Math in university you study?

Bob
with this:
function y = sinc_t(t)
    if (t == 0)
        y = 0;
    else
        y = sin(pi * t) / (pi * t);
    end
  end

sinc_t(1)

2:31 PM
@JourneymanGeek Do you need this for your Raspberry? dx.com/p/…

Bob
wait, wrong answer..

I think I'm onto something.

Bob
@slhck this works too, at least for the check for 0:
function y = sinc_t(t)
    if (t == 0)
        error('t cannot be 0')
    end
    y = sin(pi * t) / (pi * t);
  end

sinc_t(1)
sinc_t(0)

@Bob Are you running FreeMat or MATLAB?

2:34 PM
Ah
Well I can put the function in a separate file and it now calls it.

A: FreeMat : How different is it from Octave?

Eitan TIn short, both GNU Octave and FreeMat are open-source alternatives to MATLAB. However, Octave is more mature and has wider community support. I also found this interesting article that compares MATLAB, Octave, FreeMat and SciLab. It does point out a few issues against FreeMat: It doesn't suppo...

in fact, it seems to have a native sinc :P

@Bob why ?
Also, I'll have to figure out how to restore sym links that Link2SD made
duh, the memory card reader is missing -_-

@Gowtham because the optimal configuration (block size, etc.) can be dependent on the underlying media

2:58 PM
you'll also have to deal with expanding partitions, which is always risky at best

Now I have no idea how to switch without loosing my symlinked apps :/
Oh wait, cp can do that
Now I'll have to find out where my card reader is

3:11 PM

my new card is too loud - I'll probably go and replace that broken fan on the old one sometime
which will require repasting because the fan cable is routed through the heatsink frame and the screws are on the underside O.O

runnier also means slightly potentially messier

Bob
@JourneymanGeek also nonconductive, so messier isn't too much of an issue

Hi everyone

3:40 PM
lo

I have a cable modem/router/wifi AP ("A") from my ISP. I then connected a router/Wifi AP ("B") to it (B WAN port -> A LAN port). All my devices are connected to B. Since yesterday, it doesn't work anymore. I called my ISP and they told me that A doesn't support 'bridge mode' and I had to connect my devices directly to A. I've never heard about this, what's going on there?

hmm
what routers?

Bob
@DanielBeck what "doesn't work"?
can you not connect to the internet?

and 'where' did you connect them?

Bob
can you still access A?

3:42 PM
and did it wor before?

Bob
can you access B?

~half the pings timeout, half of them work, sporadic errors when browsing, have to reload in the browser quite a bit. Often the web page itself loads, but resources (CSS, images) don't

Bob
hey, it's a mod party
@DanielBeck that's not quite the complete failure I was expecting

that sounds more like B sucking than anything else.

Bob
first step: do repeated pings to A and see if they come back fine

3:43 PM
I successfully pinged A and B the whole time without any issues.

Bob
then try the same to 8.8.8.8

@DanielBeck: are clients on A and B on the same subnet?

Pinged heise.de (which is a reliable host) and that's where my failures came from.

Bob
also, can you see how much traffic is going through B?
packet loss is quite common if either downstream or upstream is saturated
e.g. if you're uploading at max, you'll have packet loss and slow downloads
what's your nominal connection speed?

@JourneymanGeek No, B (192.168.1.1) connects through the WAN port to A (192.168.0.1), and my devices are clients to B (192.168.1.x).

Bob
3:45 PM
try disconnecting all devices from B, restart B, restart your computer and test again
make sure you don't have torrent clients, et al., running

@Bob 20M down 1M up, and I get that on speedtest.net when connected via LAN cable.

Bob
@DanielBeck wait, are you on wifi too?
remove wifi from the equation for a bit
do you have packet loss on wired?

@Bob Both routers have wifi but only iDevices are connected there. The laptop with the pings is connected via cable.

Bob
anyway - yea, you have an asymmetric connection, and this is exactly the kind of situation where saturated upstream causes packet loss
@DanielBeck ok. again, disconnect everything, restart everything, and try again
and open a network monitor on whichever OS you're using (resource monitor works for Windows), and check if something is uploading a lot
saturated upstream is still just a guess, but it's a fairly common cause
1Mbit isn't all that much to work with

The weird thing is, if I remove B (my own router) from the network, it works, just like the ISP support guy told me. Before: Laptop----(LAN)B(WAN)---(LAN)A(Cable) After: Laptop----(LAN)A(Cable). So it really shouldn't be a saturation issue.

Bob
3:48 PM
if someone on your network was uploading a 10 MB photo, you're going to have high latency for a few minutes

@DanielBeck: In which case there's no forwarding going on, and your ISP is talking out of their ass.

Bob
@DanielBeck your own router could be crapping out :P
also, if torrenting or similar, cheap routers with NAT don't like the sheer number of connections

@Bob As I said, ping to A always worked without failure, while pinging some host on the internet failed half the time.

sounds a LOT like wireless interferance.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek but he said wired

3:49 PM
true

Bob
make sure you turned off wifi on the laptop? :P

@JourneymanGeek Except that ping failures are also on an entirely wired connection. If it were just the iPad, sure, or when the laptop was on Wifi…
@Bob It's off

yeah, I missed that

@Bob Restarted both devices (A, B) since
Any ideas?

@DanielBeck borrow a router off someone else and test? :P
though it is weird that it only occurs for internet connections
hrm... what's the model?

@Bob 'B' is a TL-WR1043ND (v1), 'A' is... something else.
What's weird is that the basic network structure has worked for years like that. I moved six weeks ago and got a different 'A', and it also worked. Until yesterday.
ISP writes on their website that they performed a firmware upgrade (remotely apparently?) and this could lead to problems with some devices which would be fixed by a factory reset. I did that, but still the problem persists. Then I called them.
Is it possible they are actively preventing me from running additional routers in a home network?

Bob
@DanielBeck 32 MB RAM, 8 MB flash
not too bad

@Bob Great.. there was a party and I'm off doing groceries :P
