I would have happily settled for more spindles, more RAM to cache the IO (and thus more sequential writes, but needing x64) or a proper RAID controller with a sufficient cache module (say 1GB flash backed).
Their initial solution: Move from RAID 1 to RAID 10 (one two drives)

@Hennes I'd probably be running four high-end SSDs in RAID 6, probably Samsung SM843 enterprise SSDs. Expensive, yes, but well worth it.

Bob
...
why is it so hard to find a USB 3.0 hub that'll ship here?

With four drives I would consider RAID 10

It's a write-heavy workload, so consumer SSDs would probably wear out after several months to a year of use

Bob
the amazonbasics equivalent? nope

12:02 AM
Not sure if they wear out that fast.
They used to.
But modern ones are much better

@Hennes, how much data are you writing per day?

No idea. That was in the month before I left.

At least 100 GB per day?

But the intended goal was 80 camera. Each compressing their data on their own, then via TCP/IP to the server(s). Decode there, do motion analyses (no idea if it would write first and then analyse the file or do that midstream). But that is 80 times a decoder + analyses. And read a few of those to displays.
100GB per day on a modern SSD should not be a problem.

well, hence the array. spread out the writes

12:05 AM
The Samsung SM1625 is probably a better choice, not the SM843, but these are even more expensive

Q: Are SSD drives as reliable as mechanical drives (2013)?

MattSSD drives have been around for several years now. But the issue of reliability still comes up. I guess this is a follow up from this question posted 4 years ago, and last updated in 2011. It's now 2013, has much changed? I guess I'm looking for some real evidence, more than just a gut feel. ...

I no longer work there. New job
ADT/Tyco was almost 4 years ago

I have an mSata(?) SSD I think, that thing is ridiculously small

1:07 AM
@ekaj I'm playing with the idea of installing an mSATA SSD (probably a Plextor M5M) in one of the two mSATA slots of the Dragon
It's easy to do, and doesn't require fancy disassembly--according to the service manual, it takes little more than opening the main bottom cover and inserting the drive into the motherboard. (It helps that the system is an easily-serviceable Clevo.)
I'm hoping to use it for Intel Smart Response Technology

!!wiki monad

A monadnock or inselberg is an isolated rock hill, knob, ridge, or small mountain that rises abruptly from a gently sloping or virtually level surrounding plain. In southern and southern-central Africa, a similar formation of granite is known as a kopje, a Dutch word ("little head") from which the Afrikaans word koppie was derived. If the monadnock is dome-shaped and formed from granite-gneiss, it can also be called a bornhardt. Definitions Monadnock is an originally Native American term for an isolated hill or a lone mountain that has risen above the surrounding area, typically by s...

!!wiki monad (functional programming)

1:33 AM
In functional programming, a monad is a structure that represents computations defined as sequences of steps. A type with a monad structure defines what it means to chain operations, or nest functions of that type together. This allows the programmer to build pipelines that process data in steps, in which each action is decorated with additional processing rules provided by the monad. As such, monads have been described as "programmable semicolons"; a semicolon is the operator used to chain together individual statements in many imperative programming languages, They can also be seen as a f...

I have remembered something-- the internets love with cats is utterly misfounded, I remembered I'm a dog person. It took getting one again to remember, but after years with just cats, it's awesome having a pet I care about and enjoy again. Hooray for dogs!

i have adb binary in this folder : ~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/adb. To set path I have issued : `export PATH=$PATH:~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/` and
`sudo ln -s android-sdk-linux/tools/adb /usr/local/sbin/adb` but issuing `./adb` doesnt work.How to fix ?

could you not do sudo ln -s adb /usr/local/sbin/adb
providing you're using $PATH
but I'm a Linux noob

Using english with hebrew.

Mm, I think if they lose their adhesive your best bet is to just get a new sticker
or a sharpie

@ekaj What is sharpie?

umm.. one sec
a permanent marker?

@ekaj Where would I get white one?

9:00 AM
Uhh.. whatever your equivalent of Walmart is? =p
You're in Israel, correct?

@ekaj Yes
Not sure correction pen would stay

An office supply store might have some permanent markers like that, they come in silver and white sometimes

yeah
they do rub off though

Handy thing about a marker is that you can write it again =p you could just order more stickers like the ones you have, or even put a clear sticker over your marker

I've found that in some cases brush on superglue on just the edges of stickers works well
but the stuff is a pain to find

9:09 AM
If you're fast.. you can use normal =p
except buy multiple brushes..

naw
its the precision of application

@Boris_yo: VERY different
less precision, and usually it dries out ;p
I actually run out of brush on superglue

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean?

9:16 AM
@Boris_yo: its totally different from using normal superglue and a brush ;p

Bob
@ekaj oh I remember that one

@ekaj Buying sticker would cost me $7. I am not going to spend that only for one character's sticker.

for the set?

@JourneymanGeek Yes. It's monopoly here for such product.

then memorise the key assignment ;p

I have adb in ~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/
I created the symlink of adb to /usr/local/sbin/
ls lists adb there.And I can execute it there by issuing ./adb shell (in /usr/local/sbin/ & ~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/ )
i.e ,
> aswin@Tron:~$ cd /usr/local/sbin/
> aswin@Tron:/usr/local/sbin$ ./adb shell
> root@android:/ #

@ekaj What IE version do you have? Does it have session backups?

Ash
I added both to $PATH by : export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/sbin/:~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/
and added them to ~/.bashrc
but when I try to execute :
aswin@Tron:~$ ./adb shell
bash: ./adb: No such file or directory
whats the problem ?

I wonder if its a permissions issue
try sh adb

@Boris_yo I'm running 11, and I have no idea what session backups are

10:04 AM
@ekaj Sessions restore upon crashes. Saving sessions under different names.

Ash
@JourneymanGeek sh: Can't open adb

thats curious

It does restore sessions upon crash, I'm not sure what saving sessions under different names is, though, but you can add all your currently open tabs to the favorites in one click if that counts =p

@ekaj How do I do that?

favorites, add current tabs to favorites
well.. like three clicks, and it asks for a folder to put them in

Ash
10:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek aswin@Tron:/usr/local/sbin$ sh adb
adb: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected
aswin@Tron:/usr/local/sbin$ ./adb shell
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
but I can't do the same from
aswin@Tron:~$ ./adb shell

10:28 AM
thats curious

I can see my breath in my bedroom

@ekaj Do you live in a refridgerator?

No, my room is just small, doesn't have heat, and there's a 4 ft long window beside my bed
and I like cold bedrooms
I'm torn between A) playing with just server 2012, B) just 2008 because it's what most are using and if I get an internship I might be able to do some server administration, or C) using both and just letting the servers do DHCP to the hosts, so all I have to do is move one cable =p
or static IPs.. I would have to ipconfig /release all of the windows machines on the network I think if I used dhcp

Ash
11:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek I was supposed to commence operation adb shell rather than ./adb shell
thats was the problem and it's fixed.

@JourneymanGeek where can I find windows 8 vanilla image ?

1:28 PM
@Ash: apparently you don't
I got mine off dreamspark

@Ash err if the file is in your path you only need to run adb, btw, maybe you need ~/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools/bin/ instead

How to make existing file in folder to be zero size without deleting and recreating file?
zerolgt?

touch file FTW!

@Braiam It's not for size modification

1:45 PM
err... (sends @Boris_yo to a linux box and do touch somefile to see what happens)

1 hour later…
3:00 PM
@Braiam How dare you send me to Linux box?!

3:48 PM
Yeah. It should have been a BSD box!

4:11 PM
@Hennes I used Windows .BAT file to overwrite files with zeroes.

Woohoo, only 10 points to go!

4:39 PM
@Ash ./adb shell means in the current directory (ignore the path, get the current dir, execute adb. Try using eithert adb shell (with the ./) or /usr/local/sbin/adb shell
Ans 'sh adb' means start a shell and let that shell run adb (quite possible as a shell script, while it might not be a shell script at all. Check that with the file command)
