@Bob help

Are you demanding him to help?

@ekaj yea
can u help me?

You're missing a Google tab from your web browser

@ThomasW. hi

Bob
*whistles nonchalantly*
!!listcommands

6:14 AM

Bob
@ekaj Yea, we don't really delete them :P
@ThomasW. Hrm?

!!list commands

@Utkarsh That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

6:15 AM
not you, at @Utkarsh

Bob
Ah.

is there a reason you're posting everywhere @Utkarsh ?
oh, also at you, Bob

!!lol

you should know better than to swear so badly
points at the flags

Bob
6:15 AM
!!tell 12961594 hv

Bob
@ThomasW. I'm having a little trouble seeing flags on mobile.

@Bob well it was your post that was flagged, I'd think the system wouldn't show you your own flag

Bob
Ah.

but note that people apparently with over a certain amount of rep SE wide can see the flags

Bob
6:16 AM
Lemme guess, utkarsh flagged that thing about G+?

@ThomasW. i am just very unhappy as i had so much hope

Bob
generally, most people here don't care much about swearing

the line two under that one was flagged, yes
shrugs

Bob
our definition of 'offensive' tends to be more 'directed at someone'

either way flags get annoying

6:17 AM
@Utkarsh Invalid /tell arguments. Use /help for usage info

Bob
@ThomasW. oh that one

especially when i'm talking with my girlfriend on skype

Bob
eh.

so as I siad when I showed up

Bob
sorry 'bout that

6:17 AM
glares at @Utkarsh
i should put my robocop hat on again

* comes into room because of a flag *

then you all can fear me

* decides to star flagged message *

@Bob note the account picture of our challenged friend

Bob
@ekaj again, mobile - describe please?

6:21 AM
Maybe at a later date =p

@Bob it's weed :D

Q: Whenever I try to install Virtualbox, I see two errors

UtkarshWhenever I try to install Virtualbox, I see two errors

Bob
well, that was blunt :P
oh wait. no pun intended...

thank you, let me vote to close that
jk

@Utkarsh did you try and run that command it tells you to run ?

6:22 AM
@Utkarsh: Have you read the manual?

You need to reboot iirc

@Gowtham which command?
@JourneymanGeek no, pleople said that its too easy to use it

@Utkarsh: well. Learn to do that ;p

@JourneymanGeek okay :P

@Utkarsh: also, the error message is self explainatory
so, what have you tried?

Bob
6:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek Many are.

I mean, seriously, what have you actually tried?

Bob
Many others can be easily understood/resolved after ten minutes on Google.
@JourneymanGeek Probably nothing.

@Bob: many arn't. This isn't one of them ;p

Have you tried turning it off and on again ? i'm serious

@JourneymanGeek google.co.in/…

Bob
6:25 AM
He's almost the definition of a HV

Now, here is the less self explainatory part.

@JourneymanGeek i have tried nothing, i cant understad=nd anything

SOME versions of ubuntu have broken dkms.

duh

and this may be your problem

6:25 AM
@Gowtham yes tried

Change your attitude

however, without stating your version in the question, no one can help you.

@JourneymanGeek your spelling is incorrect

huh

@JourneymanGeek okay wait let me tell

6:26 AM
update your question.

also run sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

however between the error message (which tells you to run a command) and that hint, you ought to be able to add more information, or maybe even fix it yourself.

utkarsh@utkarsh-MS-7267:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
[sudo] password for utkarsh:
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules ...done.
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules ...failed!
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)
utkarsh@utkarsh-MS-7267:~$

open the log now ?

@JourneymanGeek how to fix ?

6:27 AM
stop

HAMMERTIME!

@Gowtham okay wait

What version of ubuntu are you running?
(and why is this not in your question?)

@JourneymanGeek lubuntu 13.10\

@Gowtham: I think the LTS has a broken DPMS implimentation due to them supporting the low latency kernel

6:28 AM
/usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/build_in_tmp: 62: /usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/build_in_tmp: make: not found
/usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/build_in_tmp: 62: /usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/build_in_tmp: make: not found
/usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/build_in_tmp: 62: /usr/share/virtualbox/src/vboxhost/build_in_tmp: make: not found

hm
maybe its something even more fundamental
@Utkarsh: sudo apt-get install build-essential

@JourneymanGeek oh

I haven't made a grilled cheese in ages, be back in a few

@JourneymanGeek google.co.in/…

@Utkarsh: why are you linking what I said, googled?
are you actually actively trying to be annoying?
4

6:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek jff
just for fun

I can just ignore you yanno
you need that

@JourneymanGeek would it work perfectly after that?

@Utkarsh: no idea. You're not going to get anywhere without it

@JourneymanGeek okay i am installing

Bob
One wonders why someone who cannot follow onscreen messages and manuals would be running any variant of Linux.

6:33 AM
@Bob what, if he is a newbie?

Bob
@Utkarsh I don't care how new someone is, reading the onscreen message, running the command it so nicely recommends, and trying Google are all fairly basic things to do...

@Utkarsh: all the more reason to actually try to learn to solve issues yourself

@Bob did it, ran all commands as said but not able to do

Bob
What's the difference between someone in this chatroom telling you to run a command and the message telling you to run a command?

@JourneymanGeek ;P Okay I will

Bob
6:34 AM
@Utkarsh If you have done so, state it when you try to seek help.
You said you haven't done anything yet.
Doing nothing is different from running anything at all.

@Bob i just ran all commands before coming here

Bob
It's like saying "my computer stopped working" after formatting it and then saying "I did nothing" when asked.
2

you didn't mention that, or the error messages

Bob
@Utkarsh That's why you need to say what you did.
Preferably without needing ot be asked.

@Bob sorry

Bob
6:35 AM
But even after being asked you said you did nothing.
That's just blatant lying.

A: Set Network Proxy Linux

vasanthsir iam at the begining stage of learning please kindly help me to find the location for the bash.bashrc file location

@Bob okay thanks for help

headesk

Bob
If we know what you have done so far, we are in a far better position to help.

@JourneymanGeek special thanks to you!

Bob
6:36 AM
We also avoid telling you to do the same thing again.
Also, we get less of an impression of you not trying anything.

and in future i will try to solve my issues myself

don't say, do.

@Bob i am trying

Bob
As long as someone has tried, I'm generally happy to help.
But unless you can say what you've tried, I can only assume you haven't.

@Bob okay i
bye

6:37 AM
Do or do not... there is no try. Except when you can't do, in which case try, and document!
6

Bob
Good luck.
@JourneymanGeek ...what can I say?
I... I don't even know how to respond to that.

@Bob: I'm not sure there is anything to.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, I suppose it would be an acceptable question if it were asked as one and cleaned up a bit.

teach me how to linux
take a slice of cheese and fry it
2

Bob
@ekaj That sounds like one of random's edit messages :P

6:42 AM
He has some good ones =p

84%

@ekaj: fry is too strong a word
though, there is fryable cheese.

sounds.. ehh

superuser.com/questions/696401/… might be interesting cleaned up

A HDD for use with a TV is off-topic. — techie007 14 hours ago
:S
I'm not sure I'm comfortable with blanket saying off-topic in that circumstance.
We go back to the problem of "what defines a computer?"

6:44 AM
and he's turned it into a purchase recommendation

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's an entirely different problem :P

in Ask Ubuntu General Room, Dec 7 '13 at 13:03, by Journeyman Geek
I want to teach you to fish. Not hand you a fish

What if I plugged in an HDD to my TV and wanted to access it through the wifi?

Bob
@ekaj the painful part is that's probably actually possible

I'm pretty sure it is with my TV =p

6:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek resarting my pc

@Utkarsh: yup. asking us how to use a net. Or possibly trying yourself up in it.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek the top half, maybe, but the bottom half discusses specs and requirements a bit more
> I dont wanna completely block him.

my network is givng issues again

Bob
sigh
@allquixotic I'm beginning to think, the more 'techy' someone is the more screwed their networking is... especially if it involves wifi
that reminds me I need to get a new 10m cable tomorrow

I hate wifi :/
there, the debugging wireless router works fine however.

6:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek NOT WORKING STILL!

I want to go back to school so I can play in the computer lab
And of course clippy popped up, "It looks like you're trying to go back to school so you can play in the computer lab. Would you like help?"

@ekaj I also like to play GTA San andreas in my computerlab

What do you mean by lab?

@Utkarsh: and, what do you expect me to do?
@Bob: the issue for me is really, this is a building with just under a hundred apartments.

:-(

6:52 AM
"NOT WORKING STILL" is useless debugging information

@JourneymanGeek i am installing dkms

sure, you are.

@JourneymanGeek anyways, how do you pronounce my name?

Is "Check the manufacturer's site" an appropriate answer? =p superuser.com/questions/696395/…

@JourneymanGeek OH MY GOD! ITS WORKING NOW!

6:54 AM
I am looking through my computer for a way to do it without leaving Windows... but Google is sometimes a pretty good solution

@ekaj: actually, yes.
tho some smart tool may do too

@JourneymanGeek I am afraid whether my computer will boot properly after installng and twaeking with my kernel and Virtual box

The man who answered suggested CDI

@Utkarsh: it should.
but if it dosen't? Have fun.

@JourneymanGeek >-(
:-(
I am too much afraid
okay restarting the pc after that i wil go for haircut

6:57 AM
"I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing......Only I will remain."
;p

=p
Does Disk Management ever use the overhead column... hm
"Overhead The total additional drive space required as a result of the fault tolerant feature used." is this like the extra space SSDs have?
Googling intensifies

might depend on what flags you use too

Ah, it's RAID related it seems

ahh
windows does have softraid as an option iirc
yup

WDC greens.. meh I want some of those

7:02 AM
lol
not a fan of eco hard drives meself
If I was building an array, I'd be getting raid specific ones

I'd just use for my external enclosure :p

I've heard of NAS drives, but I don't know about RAID specific ones.. do they just have a higher RPM, like 10K, or something?

I'd like to build or buy a NAS ;p
they arn't raid specific

I'd like to build one.. buying can get expensive fast :s

7:03 AM
I said that wrong ;p
@ekaj: yeah there's that

Ah okay! Explains why I haven't heard anything..

but drives arn't cheap either.

RaspberryPi NAS? =p

naw
ooh, my wifi adaptor just BSODed my win 8 box

2TB is about 100 bucks now for a 3.5"?

7:04 AM
somewhere around there yeah

I need to buy a processor for my mini-itx.. probably last computer thing I'm buying for a while

there's a slight chance I may be moving away, and bringing my desktop with me may not make sense

I'm going to have to move to get a job in computer-stuffs =/

I'll likely bring my keyboard with me. ;p
and build a VERY similar system
o0

You can't take your desktop, or you don't want to?

7:08 AM
It may not make sense to ;p

Why's that?

If I move, its going to be pretty far away

Ah, where abouts?

no idea, whereever I get a job ;p

Haha =p I really want to work in a big city, but I will see where my career takes me.. once I'm out of school

7:09 AM
I'm almost out of school

grad school?

naw, undergrad

I should REALLY move to another school..
studying computers, or what?

I had trouble with school ;p

School isn't for everyone :)

7:11 AM
just finished the last modules of a dual major in computer forensics and information security management (what else would a dog do!) and management (know the people you may need to bite)

I would like to go into security :p I have a ways to go though

oh, there's really two sides to security
Mine's the slightly less techie side of it
forensics is fun tho, sniffing out evidence!

Policies and such?

yeah

A: I have 23 Web Servers - I need to wipe all the servers - without loss of service on any sites hosted across them

Journeyman GeekThere's no simple solution to this - its probably going to be a long and annoying road to getting everything moved. I'd start with a few things, but the book I recommended in the comments likely goes into a few details. I see four main stages here - inventory, redeployment, testing, and acceptanc...

stuff like this

I'd like to go into pentesting.. we'll see though. My current schooling is REALLY limiting my education, I'm learning a lot more just by reading StackExchange sites and books I have accumulated

7:14 AM
you learn in spite of school in many cases ;p

It's ridiculous though, I can only take two computer classes this year, both are Java programming
(basic java, mind you)

ya
I had to skip a term cause they didn't have the modules I needed ;p

I'm already excited to go to grad school because I'll get to learn so much more

in theory ;p

and I'm trying to find a new internship where I can learn more

7:15 AM
I probably should start working on some certs while I look for work
meh, my results are not out yet :/

I'm reading through a Network+ book right now for shiggles, I might actually try to study for it
Then I'd be able to sleep through my Junior year CS classes and pass
It's kinda hard to figure out what to do to further myself
What all do you use your VPS for? =p

web hosting in my case
one runs my blog, one runs my RSS feed reader and other things

I bought hosting off of namecheap... meh
Fair pricing?

no idea, I use them for my domains tho ;p
/me tends to pick up low end vpses on sale ;p

7:31 AM
I mainly went with namecheap hosting because that's where I had my domain..
VPSes are so valuable to learn on, a friend a couple of years ago gave me a shell account on his, it's a nice way to pick up linux-stuffs

yeah
or do what I did and run linux on an old box ;p
which is what my torrent download box is ;p

Well.. that's what I initially used his VPS for =p
(he said I could!)
I can't torrent at school so I learned how to use an SSH tunnel to do it

lol
I guess it would work

It did wonderfully, except I had to download the metadata before I turned the tunnel on.. I don't know enough about protocols to know why
I guess that could be a question here but meh

I was messing with using a proxy for downloading
(though, it was a dispatch clone ;p)

7:38 AM
Meh I'm trying to stop torrenting

@ekaj: I USED to have two internet connections, and I was curious if I could use both ;p

Sounds interesting =p

(so, I simulated it with two wireless connections)

Only two? Why not buy some USB adapters.. =p

lol
thats how many routers I have in range I can connect to without too much work ;p

7:44 AM
I can't complain, I had dialup until about 2.5 years ago, I have okay wifi now

oh, I'm pondering getting a powerline networking node in my room

Any particular reason, or just to tinker?

I have random wifi issues.
and the power line networking pair I have now works great

I have one random wifi issue, but it hasn't occurred since I replaced the router on my side
what's yours doing?

too many routers here
just acting up on occation

7:47 AM
I'm not sure what my issue was, possibly protocol related

oh, switching channels helps so its obvious what

Bob

(tho, I just chose to have a spare AP on another channel)
@Bob: ;p
and if you have a linux system, and some patience hostapd is pretty easy to set up

I am getting into VMs a lot now, when I head back to school I'm going to set up a big network of VMs

Bob
container virtualisation is awesome

7:50 AM
it is
kinda limited tho

container virtualization?

Bob
depends what you want to do
@ekaj it's like a cross between a chroot jail and full virt

@ekaj: openvz and the like

Bob
currently only available on linux

you're running the same kernel as the host, but a whole system is running under that

Bob
7:51 AM
basically, you share the host kernel

its what most cheap VPS providers use

Bob
but have completely isolated userspaces

Ohh like Xen and ESXi?

Bob
almost no overhead
@ekaj no, those are type 1 hypervisors
actually, wait
xen might be container

My friend mentions xen a lot, not 100% sure what it is..
my school uses ESXi though

7:52 AM
xen isn't

Bob
In computing, paravirtualization is a virtualization technique that presents a software interface to virtual machines that is similar, but not identical to that of the underlying hardware. The intent of the modified interface is to reduce the portion of the guest's execution time spent performing operations which are substantially more difficult to run in a virtual environment compared to a non-virtualized environment. The paravirtualization provides specially defined 'hooks' to allow the guest(s) and host to request and acknowledge these tasks, which would otherwise be executed in the vi...
Operating system-level virtualization is a server virtualization method where the kernel of an operating system allows for multiple isolated user-space instances, instead of just one. Such instances (often called containers, virtualization engines (VE), virtual private servers (VPS) or jails) may look and feel like a real server, from the point of view of its owner. On Unix-like operating systems, this technology can be thought of as an advanced implementation of the standard chroot mechanism. In addition to isolation mechanisms, the kernel often provides resource management features to li...

Interesting
When I get back to school I'm gonna try to get Windows Server 2k8r2 on an old dell PE and have at the network
