had I known...
besides whyever did they include minesweeper and Firefox but not a simple script to run on boot? Sigh.
even an ftp client.

do roughly what that image depicts (see the red boxes and red text for annotations on what you can do) once /mnt/windows contains your files
try ls -la /mnt/windows | less to view what's mounted on /mnt/windows (if anything)
and press q to get out of that command
up/down arrows to look around while you're in that less

@allqui can't check from my phone... Is there a space between /dev/sdal and /mnt/windows?

@Ariane yes and it's sda1 with a one not an el

@Ariane it's sda1 as in "Sam David Apple One"
all lowercase though

7:06 PM
...I'm not even using a Mac

unknown filesystem type ntfs-3g.

argh, that is bad

shall I just download the fucking 700 mb one?

"I never thought that a fantasy TBS game could be this much fun"

Can't find definition of TBS. Who knows?

I'm starting to feel a new passion bud in me, for destroying Linux terminals violently.

7:10 PM
@Ariane well, it would save you a ton of headache, because at least Ubuntu just works

turn based strategy

Thanks

Ubuntu you say? Ubuntu it is.
throws one last kick at the crappy DSL

@Ariane sorry :/ didn't realize DSL doesn't contain ntfs-3g... that's kind of surprising

@Ariane If you're looking for a general-purpose linux system with lots of support and something to start cutting your teeth on / getting familiar with linux... +1 for ubuntu

7:12 PM
@DarthAndroid she just wants to delete a bunch of protected files on her windows partition, that's literally it

well if I'd known it was blind to other drives without complicated terminal commands I would never have gone with it anyway, haha.

but the constraints she gave us originally were: (1) must boot straight to a GUI, (2) must be as small as possible

Oh.... for that I'd just Windows Disk -> repair -> command prompt -> del
or close the programs locking the files

@DarthAndroid System locks them.... the kernel

o.0
What files?
Link to question or something?

7:13 PM
C:\ProgramData

nay, they're cute system files. Once I delete them windows would go crazy and cry blood, hence why it's omissible to delete them from windows.
impossible.

Errr, why would you want to delete C:\ProgramData ?

@DarthAndroid don't worry, there's actually a decent justification for all of this

Out of my own curiosity, can you give me a link for such?

she's trying to upgrade to Windows 8.1 I believe, but it failed, so she wants to wipe her disk clean and reinstall, but she has like, programs installed to one drive and the core OS installed on another
there's no question on the mainsite, this is just her

7:15 PM
Ah.
I'm guessing ProgramData is symlinked?
(I'm not sure why she needs to delete specific files if she's going to wipe the disk for the OS upgrade anyways )

@DarthAndroid Two drives.
And I don't wanna wipe my data.

I'd still suggest the windows install disk -> recovery console as a primary method for deleting locked files for someone that doesn't have a linux disk handy and isn't familiar with setting one up.

Nu. No. More. Consoles.
Ever.

@Ariane So... you're moving ProgramData somewhere else, wiping the OS drive, and then copying back?

@DarthAndroid Does it let you? Permissions are to an extent in NTFS at the FS level and I've seen windows recovery command prompts disallow file modifications based on those permissions even though they know nothing of the OS installed which actually does know those perms

7:18 PM
Nope, just wiping the old ProgramData so I can copy the new one where the old one stands.

@JimmyHoffa ntfs-3g is awesome because it just ignores the DACLs :D

@allquixotic I know that, I'm referring to why recovery prompts don't always do the job from a windows install CD though

Errr, I'm confused. ProgramData holds a bunch of application files from installed programs on your system. Did you reinstall your programs in Windows 8.1? If you're deleting ProgramData and replacing it with a clean/empty/barebones one from the Windows 8.1 install, i wouldn't recommend that
not without reinstalling all your applications, anyways.

my favorite type of security is the kind where stern, paternalistic questions can be answered with "OK!" and then go right around the security mechanism :P
DACLs: "you are not supposed to access that file!"
Me: "OK!" /me *accesses it*
IP "security bit" April Fools RFC: "you are not supposed to send malicious data if the security bit is set!"
Me: "OK!"

My ProgramData folder contains problems from the previous installation where I carried it over and it fucked up permissions everywhere. Same for my AppData folder. I don't think it's safe to keep them. I still have a couple of Windows functions that mysteriously don't work because of that.

7:22 PM
There's a reason why Simcity is one of my top all time favourite franchise. Simcity 2000 being one of the most memorable in the series. There's also a reason why city planners and architects play this game.

Besides, copying that stuff over is a pain because it contains lots of "name of the element is too long for the destination folder".

Really? City planners and architects play this game?

@Ariane My point is more along the lines of "If you're dumping ProgramData, then you should dump Program Files and Program Files (x86) too."

@DarthAndroid Ehm, I plan to reinstall most programs anyway; I was never able to keep them. Though games should still work, so I'm keeping those.

@Boris_yo Everyone plays it, did you ever play it? It's tons of fun!

7:25 PM
@DarthAndroid then the issue with most of that stuff isnt there anyway, it is a bloody redirected mess for compatability. bouncing around from hither to fro, until itself dont know where to go :-)

@Psycogeek That's only because some developers think they know better than windows where the files need to go!

@DarthAndroid its because instead of keeping it simple and having to Toss old stuff out left and right, they "fixed" it making it a complex nightmare. And it still not comatable with the old stuff . Sometimes you just have to start from scratch, in a garage , with real programmers, keeping things simple.

you know, I'm running DamnSmallLinux 4.11RC2 in pure software emulation (x86-32 on Windows 7 32-bit) and the performance is actually not bad at all... it's using SDL for graphics rendering and input, and no kernel level acceleration of any kind
fast X11 environment and very usable

ubuntu.com The big orange button, right?

still tempted to install VirtualBox next time I have the opportunity (work computer, so those opportunities are somewhat rare) and take advantage of VT-x and EPT
@Ariane yeah

7:31 PM
Just making sure. I'm wary of Linux's treachery now. (Kidding. PArtly.)

12.04 LTS is a safe bet
although it really doesn't matter which one you pick
13.10 will probably contain more bugs but might also be better at hardware support

Last time I got 12.04 and someone told me something like "hah, that's because you got the old version. Next time, get the latest.

@Ariane -_-

I don,t remember what "that" was though.

ok, ok, get 13.10 then, lol
but for deleting a file it really doesn't matter
ntfs-3g has been in Ubuntu for many many years, way before Ubuntu 12.04

7:34 PM
Hey

!!tell 11736953 hello

@allquixotic Command hi does not exist.
@Ariane Howdy.

I'm considering 1. wiping current Windows 8, 2. installing Ubuntu where it was but on a small partition, 3. using Ubuntu to delete my stuff, 4. Install Windows 8.1 and make it the main OS. Is that an okay plan?
(If you forget the grammar problem)

hahahaha! a long awaited dream come true - access to MSDN/Dreamspark Premium!

@studiohack <-- envious

7:36 PM
What does MSDN Premium do?

@Ariane Free porn with every download

@Ariane doing things in that order sounds about right

@allquixotic lol I have been so envious for so long.
@OliverSalzburg shut up, that's not funny.

Sorry :P

@Ariane gives you access to all Windows OSes and development tools

7:37 PM
lol, sorry I was abrupt.

everyone duck under the table; two mods are about to be in a shooting war!
(I dream of mods being the only people allowed to carry firearms in chat)

@allquixotic Might I have problems with, like, Ubuntu since it was there first it'd want to be the main OS, something like that?

@allquixotic HAHAHA
there is my firearm, @allquixotic. we just can't use them on other diamonds.

@Ariane Step 4 is wrong though, should read Step 4. Expand ubuntu to fill the rest of the drive, use ubuntu
nyuck nyuck

@allquixotic What's the difference between MSDN and MSDN Premium?
@JimmyHoffa Hell no. :)

7:39 PM
@Ariane $ and what editions of what products and how many of them you have access to. (Presuming the reference is to MSDN Subscription, which is pretty damn nice to have, I miss the universal subscription I had at the past 4 jobs...)

I see.

@studiohack oooh, free stuff!

@SimonSheehan YESSS! so excited! haha

@studiohack also long time no see haha

updating to Windows 8.1 right now, through public channels.
@SimonSheehan I KNOW!! it has been forever!

7:41 PM
@studiohack How have things been for you out there?

I'm now over 1000 miles from home, at college. Finally! haha

Woah, thats exciting!

@Ariane the traditional wisdom is install Windows first then Linux

@SimonSheehan it is. I'm finally here, it's great to be here. So I am actually a lot closer to your location :P

@studiohack oh nice! I'm still living up here haha, haven't gone too far... meaning im still in the parents basement. But working full time on becoming a mechanic right now :) what are you in college for?

7:44 PM
@allquixotic Yeah but I have a feeling it's gonna be a pain to make a USB key out of it and theeeeeen install it for real.

@SimonSheehan whoa dude, that's awesome, about becoming a mechanic! :D

@Ariane the Linux bootloader will overwrite Windows' in the main boot sector before the first partition, but that's OK, because Windows' boot loader will still exist in the boot sector of its partition, meaning that you can have Ubuntu's GRUB boot Windows

@SimonSheehan Management Systems. So like ManagementInfoSys

Waaaaait. I'm so stupid.

Ubuntu's GRUB will automatically pick up Windows and add it as an option

7:44 PM
@studiohack it's really exciting. Schooling here for it is cool - you got to class once a week, and spend the rest of your days working (so making money) and getting real experience.

but Ubuntu will be the default until you change it :P

@SimonSheehan that is sweet!

@SimonSheehan car mechanic?

@allquixotic yes

is that a government education thing, or through a technical school or? @SimonSheehan

7:45 PM
WHY do I need to wipe the files before I install anything? That's only a requirement for getting my user profile working and stuff.

@studiohack Government works with schools to provide it for trades

@SimonSheehan too bad I don't know any mechanics in real life, because we always have car problems lol

@Ariane always start fresh. when you can.

@allquixotic haha always good to keep them around ;)

@SimonSheehan how does that work? seems intriguing

7:45 PM
@SimonSheehan I need to meet a mechanic who's in my area and is clueless about computers; that way we can help each other

@studiohack Government actually gives a lot of money into it - it's hard to find employers who want to take on an 18 year old with little experience and teach them.

@SimonSheehan, @allquixotic you'll get a kick out of this - I was so bored the other night, that I up and decided to do my already late oil change on my vehicle... at 12:30 AM, in the parking lot of my dorm.

No uhm. It,s on another drive. Basically in the first place I only need the second drive when I'll want to make my user profile and stuff. I can install fine without any of that. So. I'll be right back. Windows 8 installs in like 15 minutes, heh.

@SimonSheehan true, true. that's awesome

@studiohack lol

7:46 PM
@studiohack Still got the 4runner?

@SimonSheehan WOW, nice memory. I do! She's here with me! Running strong! :D

@Ariane wait, 8 or 8.1?

@studiohack haha I have an awesome memory. Good! Gotta love 4x4 once you get farther north ;)

8 then 8.1 through the Microsoft Store which I currently can't do because of myu moved user profile and stuff.

I'm in the market for a truck at the moment

7:47 PM
@Ariane ok ok :P

So. BRB!

you have to get a Toyota. I love these rigs.

@studiohack Somebody's headed to The Evil Dead?

I want a 2014 Honda Civic Hybrid but they're too expensive :'( stuck with a 2012 Civic regular

7:47 PM
@SimonSheehan I've ALWAYS wanted to visit Canada and off road.

@studiohack wow! You always take pictures at the best angles haha, quite the landscape

@JimmyHoffa that's home, and my rig. so perhaps yes?
@SimonSheehan hahaha, I should PM you my photolog

@studiohack I actually live about 40 minutes away from a massive off roading area, and some mudding pits people like to attempt. tow hooks required! :P

@SimonSheehan I hate mudding pits. :P

@studiohack Not my thing either, but it's quite popular among the truck owners here haha.
@studiohack Although i do like the toyota's, we're GM city down here haha, hard to find good ones like yours :(

7:49 PM
@SimonSheehan yes, I know, that's true everywhere, Kinda disgusts me haha
@SimonSheehan I should find you one and bring it to you. :P
if you pay my gas and expenses, I would totally do that. :P
@SimonSheehan check your gchat.

@studiohack haha would be funny. Actually I ran into an old 1991 jeep TJ at work last week, reminded me of you

heeeeeey. The Windows 8 DVD is apparently a bootable OS. Heh.

@SimonSheehan lol really? haha. Not a big Jeep fan, but I'm touched! :P

ooh, thanks! Checking out that thread now
@studiohack This one had definitely seen its share of off-roading and was reminded of your adventures :P

I selected it in the bios and it just ended in a normal boot but with a lot of DVD spinning noise.

7:51 PM
Well built vehicle though, had 350k on it (217,000 miles), stick shift too! @studiohack

@SimonSheehan lol I don't do that much anymore, NOTHING here in Indiana. except private parks where you pay $20 a day to get in. I'm used to free or $15 a year. lol. I am going off road on Saturday, probably the last time this year! :(
@SimonSheehan wow nice! the older jeeps, I will grant, seem better built.
@SimonSheehan speaking of adventures, I now ride dirtbikes! :P

@studiohack wow, not cool :( that's a lot. I think around here its pretty well free, as long as you're good.
@studiohack woah, exciting! I've only been on a motorbike once and it was quite the rush
But dirtbikes always intrigued me

@SimonSheehan SO much fun. you need to visit me haha

Haha sounds like we would have quite a time

we would... I'd put you on the bike and me in the 4Runner and switch off. I can take the 4Runner anywhere beginning bikers can go :P

7:54 PM
@studiohack The flex on that thing is stock? Woah

and shoot, I have to run, taking someone to the airport for fall break. But I'd like to keep catching up with you, I will be back in about 2-3 hours!
@SimonSheehan.

@JimmyHoffa It gets boring quickly.

@SimonSheehan haha, you know your terms! yup

@studiohack Haha okay, see you in a few hours, im a bit more active here now :)

@SimonSheehan awesome! I've been more active behind the scenes as a diamond, but not on chat or answering... See you later! :D

7:55 PM
oh no actually I just forgot to "press any key".

@Ariane do you know where the "Any" key is on your keyboard? :D

Heh.
..........I get to the install process only to remember that I only have the product key on a text file. Lemme ask Dropbox.

Hmm, if the web is 2/3rds ads, and soon to be 4/5ths ads, why am i using an exclude list? shouldnt i use an include list :-)
4

hey, can someone look that up for me? in the windows installation program, is it 1000 or 1024-MB GBs that it uses? This perfectionist here doesn't want a 4.99 GB partition ideally.

@Ariane It uses 1024 based

8:05 PM
kay thanks
install process started.

which is so silly... 1024 means nothing beyond probably sizes for bytes... there's no reason to have 1024kb = 1mb instead of 1000kb = 1mb and so on
I can't imagine a hardware bus with a width over a couple kilobytes

that was hilarious.
and Jimmy, it's because data is always in multiples of twos. Basically 1000 instead of 1024, I imagine, is only an illusion-ish way to represent it. And it's also convenient to sell something saying it's 1 TB by choosing the option that has 2.4% less data.
Okay, uhm, Windows 8 reinstalled.
I wanted to update to 8.1 right away, but it looks like I can't. It's not in the Windows Store.

8:24 PM
@Ariane Data is in widths, the width is usually N bytes where N is a factor of 2 partially by convention partially for real reasons at some levels. Thing is the widths are never going to be at the MB level, so 1000KB takes an identical number of cycles through whatever bus as 1024 because 1024 doesn't make a more efficient use by being a factor of the bus width or anything

@hus787 Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! I am this channel's helpful chat bot. Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help. For bot commands, type !!listcommands

@JimmyHoffa I see. Well. Convention then? That's the explanation to most unexplainable things.

@jmpreiks Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! I am this channel's helpful chat bot. Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help. For bot commands, type !!listcommands

Guess I need to update with Windows Update before. Gonna be long.
oh well it's not too bad. Well, gonna depend on how far I'll have to get into the updates and how many reboots I'll need before I can get 8.1.

Anyone happen to be running Windows XP?

8:34 PM
Upvoting a previously useless answer due to an edit you've made to it feels extremely dirty

@OliverSalzburg I know right.

@Seth No, but I have a few VMs running it

I was hoping someone could retrieve a file from C:\windows\system32 for me.
Windows 8 needs more 3D pipes screensavers.

@Seth I would burn in copyright hell if I gave it to you
They have no internet there :(
Also: O__O
That's not cool

8:39 PM
@OliverSalzburg I guess that's so.. You wouldn't be able to prove that I have a copy of XP and that I'm just too lazy to reimage a machine for a screensaver >.<

@Seth Bouncing 3d text not good enough for us I see?

@OliverSalzburg lol.

@Seth What's the name of the file?

Eh... It's been like 5 minutes since Windows update has supposedly started downloading updates. 0 KB total, 0 % complete. Nuh?

@JimmyHoffa I don't think they have 3D text in Windows 8.1 ;P
@OliverSalzburg sspipes.scr

8:41 PM
@Seth I thought you were in XP...

@JimmyHoffa Not anymore ;P

@Seth I don't have that one, but I have the screensaver
Oh, it's in SysWOW64

@Seth Not sure about 8.1 since I'm still waiting for Windows Update to wake up, but Windows 8 does have the good old ugly 3D text screensaver.

@Ariane I think there's something wrong with Windows 8 update's progress bar, I noticed the same this week when I first updated to Windows 8 and tried to install updates, just sat saying 0% and 0kb, and then after several hours was all "Downloading done! Installing 1 of 88 updates..." and so on and worked perfectly. Just the progress bar that's busted.

I started the x64 VM

8:43 PM
@JimmyHoffa Thanks.

There's also a wsspipes.scr

@Ariane I'll go double check 8.1

@Ariane Alternatively maybe you'll lose a day waiting for it and it's actually hung and not doing anything at all. Isn't technology fun??

Lol.

@JimmyHoffa we should design a "super-" Turing machine that is capable of determining whether any Turing machine will halt, and use that to tell Ariane if Windows will ever finish updating
of course, then we'd need to design a "super-duper-" Turing machine to determine whether our super-Turing machine ever halts
and the problem would go on forever >_>

8:44 PM
@OliverSalzburg Cool. I didn't really think about the legal issues though.. So if you'd rather not give them to me that's OK.

I can't even upload them because this is a pristine XP install with no plugins

@allquixotic The halting problem isn't technically a "problem" until we start creating computers without power buttons; I'm looking at you Apple :|

It's for testing purposes
All the upload sites don't work

@Ariane You're right, it's still there. I must have missed it. Also, the 8.1 update comes through Windows Store, not windows update ;)
@OliverSalzburg Oky then.

8:46 PM
@OliverSalzburg Hmm. I'll have to sniff it out. It's prob. OK though.
Interesting stuff in a screensaver. Also notice the dates lol.

@Seth I know but it's not in the windows store upon a fresh install so I figured I needed a more up to date windows 8 before.

@Seth .scr are just .exe files
Those are probably PE sections

@Ariane Ah. That could be. I missed it at first because it was a tile in the store, not in the update section of it. I also had an up to date 8 though :)
@OliverSalzburg Yeah, that's the insides of the .src.

BTW the updates are okay. Basically windows update in PC settings was messing with windows update in control panel. the one in the PC settings was done and ready and the other one was still searching, and I did restart and update, and... installing update 23/53.
I wouldn't have missed it, it's a huge tile. I saw it before reinstalling.

@JimmyHoffa Wait, which Apple devices don't have power buttons?

8:52 PM
none that I know of.

@Ariane oh lol. Is the updates in the PC settings the same as the control panel one? I was never sure...
@Ariane All the more shame to me :P

@DarthAndroid I said yet, I just suspect they'll be the first to make this genius move. It'll be a feature that costs more as well I'm sure as they market the hell out of their amazing "Always-on" technology

@seth same updates, different engines. they compete with each other. hopefully this'll be fixed in 8.1

If you can't smell the sarcasm feel free to read the church turing thesis again

@Ariane Hm interesting. I can't believe MS let that happen in the first place.

8:56 PM
@jimm whoever had their hopes on apple is losing them. I'm not one but I hear apple fans all around saying that it's seriously going downhill and that there's just no more innovation after the stuff that Steve Jobs had planned before his death.
@Seth they let a lot of stuff happen in windows 8. I still like it but it's obviously full of "oops"
update 48 of 53... I hope after those I can install 8.1, and there aren't 60 more waiting for me.
hope it doesn't configure the updates for too many centuries too.

This is what I get for starting that XP VM:

@OliverSalzburg It's a trick, it's actually just installing some CnC server a nearby router setup to redirect XP's update-request address to.

@Ariane It almost seems like a new MS marketing plan..

ah XP, such awful memories.
@eh?

XP x64, now there are some awful memories.

9:07 PM
When I searched for sspipes earlier, I got that stupid dog search avatar thing

heh, never got that. Twas bad?

@DarthAndroid all my awful memories come from '98 on AMD hardware, gah what was wrong with technology at that point in time...

Bob
...Sydney's on fire

bahahaha. The dog that guides you through Windows XP's unending searches! memories!

@Bob Is that a figure of speech?

9:09 PM
Being from an eternity ago is enough wrongness.

Bob
@OliverSalzburg quite literal.
worst fires in over a decade last night

Just googled it :(

@Bob omg :(
are you in NSW?

Bob
smoke/clouds everywhere, and you can smell the smoke this morning

Windows 8.1 downloading! :D

Bob
9:11 PM
I don't even live that close to normally flammable/forested areas

and that's awful mess.

@Bob lol. I was about to ask...

I'm sorry about these bad fires.

> Microsoft will officially retire its Windows XP operating system early next year, but Google on Wednesday announced it will continue to support its Chrome browser for the platform through at least early 2015. The Mountain View, Calif., Web giant announced it will keep sending out updates and security patches to the Windows XP version of Google Chrome 'until at least April 2015.
Sweet. So I'll get Chrome updates for my critically insecure OS \o/

Bob
@allquixotic metro Sydney, which is the capital of nsw - rural got hit bad
@ariane I'm not really in an affected area, just close. those poor people :(

9:14 PM
@Bob that's about how I felt when 9/11 happened

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I really wish people would just stop supporting it, then it'll finally go away

just change your crappy OS, security aside.
@Bob pat

@Bob Well, it's just another way for Google to try to get IE users to switch to Chrome, I guess
But, yeah, I agree with your previous statement
One more upvote to cap...
I have to resist downvoting anythign

why?

Too late, already downvoted 2 posts :P
@Ariane Because it costs reputation and further decreases the chance to reach the cap

9:27 PM
what, down votes cost reputation?

@Ariane Only if you use them right

Bob
@allquixotic though this seems too be limited to property damage for now, thankfully

Q: How to stop my idiot brother's MitM attack

Niet the Dark AbsolMy brother's pissing me off with his phone, repeatedly locking my computer in a man-in-the-middle attack and screwing up my DNS cache. How can I get my computer to refuse to interact with 192.168.0.65 and prevent him from fucking around?

dontcha just hate that :-)

@Psycogeek Oh shit, I can't wait to troll my kid like that... "You want internet? Learn to securitize your traffic boy!"

9:44 PM
@JimmyHoffa lol. if his brother is messing with the router, wouldnt he be out of luck till he hard resets the router and changes the password ?

@Psycogeek Depends on if he's using the router or if it's just OTA MitM

@JimmyHoffa ohh i get it. so he would want to static his address to where he wants it to actually go?

@Psycogeek If he's just picking packets out of the air he'll need to use a proper encryption tunnel with an out of band authentication or agreed upon rolling-keys to keep his brother out of the tunnel

@JimmyHoffa I thought all this stuff was supposed to be secure (or use that word) now?

@Psycogeek so do most people...
