5:00 PM
You say a lot. Yep.

@jokerdino you might say she's very revealing

@allquixotic Only in the sense I mean.

@allquixotic He

like that "Soma" brand of ... apparel O___O

@Hennes Fuck all that, the diskdrives were better on RS232 anyway, had to keep the ISA's open for your soundblasters man... mmm hot midi vibes, that's what I'm talking about.

5:01 PM
Lol, makes me sound like a whore.

Oops.

new incognito window -> google images -> soma
gogogogo, see you in 25 minutes

@allquixotic Uhm.
I use New Private Window.

whatevs

The soundblasters with propriatary IDE connector for a CDROM, and 30 pin SIMM sockets for storing samples. And the GUS for good sound. :)

5:01 PM
And I'M the one who says too much?

@Hennes I remember plugging in joystick to soundblaster lolol

@OliverSalzburg They are benchmarkers. They get samples for testing and informing audience.

I never used a joystick with a Intel style PC. Just with Amiga PCs

@allquixotic Soma shows images of this random person Soma.

@Boris_yo Yeah, but I doubt they get 50 samples of each SSD

5:02 PM
@Hennes Even when playing Street Fighter?

@jokerdino it's a brand of apparel, there are US commercials about it

I never played that.

they are.... umm

Even Soma Apparel is very much filtered. Life is boring. :/

@OliverSalzburg Why so many samples? They get 1 for each model in product line.

5:03 PM
The 386 had games such as Master of magic, Master of Orion, UFO-1, Civ-1, ...

the 486 had games such as Duke Nukem 1, Commander Keen, Major Stryker
I played the hell out of those

@Boris_yo The communication barrier between us is bigger than the great wall of China
3

I think I head about dukenem. The others are unknown to me

@Hennes You don't use joystick when playing arcade games, platformers, arcade air combat and things that would play better with joystick?

@OliverSalzburg lol

5:04 PM
the first thing I ever typed on a computer

oh, and colonisation.

Lol, there was this restart button on Unetbootin. I thought it was the program that would restart. Nope, surprise computer reboot, heh.

A:
CD DUKE
DN1

@allquixotic And you did not feel the need for joystick for these games.

@allquixotic Is that the game Dukem Nukem?

5:05 PM
I never played arcade games on a PC. The amiga (with 2 or 4 joysticks) worked a lot better than the PC and its keyboard

@jokerdino ya
@Boris_yo I used a gamepad

And the 'normal' joysticks did not fit. They just worked with a C64, a Speccy, a C128, an A500, an A2000 and some ataris'. The PC decided to be different so I had no joysticks for that

When I know something, I imagine it to be widely popular.

@OliverSalzburg They get 1 sample for popular model. If it does not work or becomes defective, they return it to get replacement.

@Boris_yo I know how it works, you don't have to explain it to me

5:06 PM
Also, not that much cash at the 386 time. So buying new ones while I had a set of perfectly good arcade pro sticks was not an option.

jeez, with all the conversation threads going on in chat today, we're gonna need GPGPU/CUDA/OpenCL or some of Jimmy's fancy dancy Haskell to manage all the threads ;)

@Hennes @allquixotic I assumed gamepad and joystick under same.

We only miss a Bob ranting about IE9 not being so bad and JMG talking about his robotic clone.

@OliverSalzburg Then we have great wall of China between us.

yeah where's @Bob

5:08 PM
@bob, I summon thee.

we need to tell him to sleep
if Bob isn't here because he's asleep, that's bad
2
if he's here and we tell him to sleep and he won't, that's also bad
2

@OliverSalzburg dupe :P

It's only 4 AM in Sydney.

he's probably catching up on sleep debt from all those late nights talking to Ariane me and Ravi

I still haven't upgraded to IE10 because I am still not sure.

5:09 PM
I need to star 3 message in chat... that is TERRIBLE :(

@allquixotic lol. She didn't see it yet

@allqui Problem. When I boot from USB, the only option in the menu is Default, and it only brings me back to the same menu again.

test @Ariane

@allquixotic All 3 of your messages miraclously got starred.

and yeah, I'm there and reading on my phone.

5:10 PM
@Ariane -_-

@Boris_yo they already patched IE10, so its not as bad as it was. The speel chucker is rather nice.

@Ariane what OS?

@jokerdino she flashed (whoa...) DamnSmallLinux 4.11 RC2 using unetbootin to a USB

@Psycogeek Is there downgrade available to previous versions?

I don't get to use those words in that order very often in a professional context

5:11 PM
@allquixotic the next level now?

Eh. USB key created from Windows 8 professional with damn small Linux.

she flashed
@Ariane if this doesn't work, you get to rename it "damn Linux" :-)

@Boris_yo if you get it via the updates, I think it is still removable/retractable , until you get the other update which allows you to remove old updates. Plus there is prerequisite IE10 updates, that cause some minor issues.

@Ariane no way for you to burn a CD/DVD?

hah he said it. Also I did read that message with me scratched out by I didn't understand it.
eh I do have DVDs, even though it's a bit of a waste.

5:14 PM
@Ariane cough It wasn't meant for you.

@Ariane well if you can spare one....
that would be a much more reliable way to go
no additional downloading needed

What was the matter anyway?

just burn that DSL 4.11 RC2 syslinux iso using Windows' built-in ISO writer

Why are you trying to boot from USB?

Don't cough stuff and then not tell me. D:

5:15 PM
@jokerdino WRP preventing deletion of protected files, needs to boot Linux and rm -rf some stuff

@Psycogeek In that case I will wait until updates will be fixed and not cause some minor issues.

eh need to delete Windows system files

@allquixotic Why can't the protected files just stay there?

@jokerdino because Quebec

@allquixotic Trebec.

5:16 PM
they're in the way and I want to reinstall.

@jokerdino no, Quebec

> This cat… it’s vibrating. Is that supposed to happen?
3
It really scares me that someone didn't grow up with the wonder that is kitties.

@noggerl Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! I am this channel's helpful chat bot. Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help. For bot commands, type !!listcommands

@Boris_yo I don't think they will fix shit. If they were going to they would have long ago when people pitched a fit. It will just go into the pile of other bugs that "less" people are really ticked off about, and "more" people didn't know they existed.

@Braiam Right. And the dupe says it's already fixed. But I reported the issue after the supposed fix was implemented

5:17 PM
Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.

@allquixotic So, no real reason? One of us

scientific poetry... oo'

@Ariane I don't mind telling you but I can't.

Everyone, freeze. I am finding a good cat gif.

5:19 PM
@joker That's just cruel. D:

!!tell 11733185 no

@ChatBotJohnCavil damn bot

Hey, doesn't Windows have a built-in utility somewhere for burning ISOs?

5:20 PM
@Ariane the point of giving that in this context is especially the part "I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations / A singular development of cat communications" in reference to Darth's quote of someone being unfamiliar with cats purruing
@Ariane this is what I said a few lines above, but, yes. :-)

Ok where is the cat removal tool in IE10?

@Ariane If you haven't associated ISOs with a tool other than Windows Explorer, yes

Also, I now have evidence for a Feline Corollary to Godwin's Law.

@DarthAndroid ?

5:21 PM
Oh I see. Open with explorer. Should've maybe made it a right click option.

@DarthAndroid meaning, every conversation eventually devolves into cat pictures?

@allquixotic My tired brain is amused by how quickly this chat derailed onto cats.

@DarthAndroid but of course! they're cute little furry things that are so innocent-looking and need our help to survive! and they have cute little clawy-claws and they purr at you and ram their face into your leg, and claw up your work pants when you don't give them cheese....

@allquixotic That, and that once cats are mentioned, thread is over.

5:23 PM
@OliverSalzburg I like how you say useful.

keep em comming. the ads hunter needs something to shoot.

Like the Chatbot calling himself useful. xP

@allquixotic When I open my ISO with Windows Explorer, it creates a fake DVD drive and shows the contents in it. Odd.

my cat, Nikki, lays in the hallway in the morning waiting for me to come down to go to work, and as soon as she sees me, she stands up and meows and comes toward me... then she stops at the top step of the stairs and I pet her a few times, then when I start walking downstairs she bolts down the stairs, and I pet her again at the bottom of the stairs, etc

It's even better with sound

5:25 PM
Hey mom. Give me a minute. I'll be in bed after this last cat video.

My cats go nuts when I play that video

@Ariane you have to use the program to "burn" the ISO

@Hennes Look what cats done to you!

But there's no program. There's only an I: drive showing up in the Explorer.
Apparently those instructions only apply to Windows 7 so it changed.

@OliverSalzburg That was actually pretty... nice. The slomo.

5:26 PM
And I don't have the right click option a screenshot is showing. Hmm.

@OliverSalzburg That's because of HD monitor you have. It breaths life.

@Boris_yo It's because of the sounds actually

@OliverSalzburg Apparently cats talk in meows.
Humanity needs translators for animals.

Aaaah. I see.
The right click option only shows up if the explorer is the default program for ISOs. Odd.
It has been soooooooo many years since I last burned an optical disc.

Could anyone help me with this regex? [^A-Za-z0-9](?!pdf) . It works with JS regex, but not with sed. I want to remove all special chars except the dot from extension. Thanks in advance

5:29 PM
@Boris_yo The noises cats make are pretty easy to interpret once you observe them long enough
@Calin You probably just have to escape everything

Should be good. Trying to boot from Linux. If all goes well I'll jump with the Windows reinstallation.

Q: Linux command for sorting

suviWhat is the linux command used for sorting different attributes in a file with different delimiters and also command for checking whether a file is sorted or not and also please provide a good reference for linux 'sort' command

wat

@OliverSalzburg that's a nice sentence

> What do you use to sort something and what does the sort program do?
and...and...and

5:34 PM
@OliverSalzburg I did with gsub String method in ruby

@Calin In that case it probably doesn't support lookaround
If you're already in ruby, why are you calling out to sed for regex?

@OliverSalzburg Can you assume what cat's communicate from video you posted?

@Boris_yo Yeah, it's "I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!!!!!"

@OliverSalzburg Are they not empathic, delicate and civilized to such extent? Violence is not the answer.

probably.
I want to learn everything. As bash is standalone on linux machine, why to install any language for some tasks. But in some cases, I should use ruby(which I know better than bash, and I use it daily)

5:38 PM
@jokerdino that's me

@OliverSalzburg must be those "subvocal oscillations" :-)

@allquixotic Problem. "Can't find a <something> filesystem, sorry. Dropping you to a (very) limited shell."
It's made to work from an USB key apparently.

@Ariane Ah, fun. When the initscript makes assumptions.
what filesystem is it looking for?

Winter needs to come sooner, I miss the snow.

I don't know. I don't remember.
Just gonna try LinuxLive to make a USB key.

5:50 PM
@Calin Makes sense
@Calin bash itself also has regex support
It's just as much fun :P

@Ariane oh, that's a good idea
I forgot about LinuxLive, use that, it's good!

Just googled, heh.
BRB, trying it out.
@allqui When I boot to the USB key, I'm brought to a command line interface apparently named GRUB4DOS. What do I do?

@Ariane GRUB4DOS?? argh... it isn't burning properly! :/
GRUB is the boot loader
did you boot to the same DSL 4.11RC2 syslinux that I linked before?

yes. I put that one on my USB key with Linux Live.

this one is without syslinux, maybe that would work better: distro.ibiblio.org/damnsmall/release_candidate/dsl-4.11.rc2.iso
it's still only 50 MB, but a different bootloader

6:04 PM
Heh, hope it doesn't take as long to download. Thanks for your help by the way.
70 KB/s. Almost fast.
Ironic that I want to reinstall Windows but it's Linux that's giving me trouble.
Since having an external OS is useful sometimes, I think I'll make myself a little 5 GB partition where I'll install a full permanent Linux distribution. Sounds nice.

@Ariane yeah that's always nice

What's something hassle-free, Windows-user-friendly, and won't force me to have a dual boot menu?

@Ariane you're going to have a dual boot menu no matter what, you can't get around that, but you can configure grub so that it has a very short or zero timeout (so it doesn't wait around for you to pick an option) and set the default to Windows

define "won't force me to have a dual-boot menu" ?
Because ... what @allquixotic said. You'll need some way of switching between them.

I don't want to be given the option to boot to Linux. If I want to boot into Linux, I'll press F11 and go to the boot menu.

6:16 PM
If you got more than one disk it is rather convienient and less problematic to use the bios to hop between systems.

Disc... Wait, the BIOS only sees drives, not partitions? Poop, I'm gonna have a problem, because while I do have 3 drives, one is slow as hell and only used for backup purposes, and one is full with my data partition, and you can't really shrink a partition, and well the last drive is the SSD Windows goes on.

@Ariane if both Windows and Linux are installed on a GPT-partitioned hard drive and booting by UEFI, you can have both OSes appear in your BIOS's UEFI boot menu (even on the same hard drive), and that will be your "dual boot menu"
UEFI itself is a sort of "boot loader" kind of like GRUB used to be, in the sense that the BIOS can now "see" OSes on different partitions on the same HDD

Oh phew. Wait, what's GPT-partitioned? And is an SSD okay?

except that UEFI is the BIOS, the lowest level software on your computer
@Ariane SSD is fine, GPT is GUID Partition Table, the partition table format that's required for proper UEFI booting
the default / 1980s layout is called Master Boot Record (MBR) and it only supports booting 4 partitions, and each partition can only be up to 2 TB in size, and the size of the program that can go in the boot sector is so small that they can't fit a proper UEFI loader in it, so MBR can't be used
something like Easeus Partition Master can probably convert an MBR formatted disk to GPT without losing any data, but Windows might find itself unable to boot if you do that, unless you then boot to the Windows recovery console from a Windows CD and run fixboot and friends
maybe even have to run bcdedit

Oh, okay. So GPT is just something not antic which I don't need to care about. Roger.

6:22 PM
@allquixotic i think the free version of easus didnt see my GPTs

@Ariane well, if you want to set up your dual boot based on UEFI, you will be forced to enable to GPT, unless you're already formatted as GPT
unless you just go with the old way, which is to install GRUB as a boot loader

I don,t think I,ve ever been given that option. Windows probably always makes GPT partitions in the install process, hmm?

@Ariane the disk manager would tell you what they are now.

yeah under computer management

Where is that in the disk manager?

6:30 PM
C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc
@Ariane on the left of the graphic view it will say stuff, and in the text view it will say. plus i think they use color coding of the chunks in the graphic view.

I was already in the disk management tool. Though I see no such thing as a text view.

@allquixotic ...and it supports being awesome, simple, and really easy to work with

Who's awesome?

@Ariane ugg, i cant see it either, there has to be something.

@Ariane I am. ;-)

6:34 PM
@Ariane MBR, I mean, it talks about masters and boots all in one name, I dare say it's like the Judge Dredd of computers

MBR was limited to very small disks. That was fun. 508MB HDD -> forget it.
MBR/BIOS got patched quite a few times in the past

Lol, silly @allquixotic. I just knew I didn't have to worry about it.
Anyway I'll worry about Linux later. I'll go try my key now. As long as I keep some free space on the SSD, I can do it after I'm done with Windows, right?

@Ariane -_-

@Hennes All I'm saying is I miss LILO. GRUB configs are simply nowhere near as easy to tweak without totally crapping up your system.

Aye

6:36 PM
if you're doing a clean reinstall, sure

All rightie. Off I am then. Hope the key works.

Just [shift] init=/bin/bash [enter] though
mount / -o remount,rw

............what?

Just commenting on old linux installations and LILO

Uhm okay. See you in a bit!

6:37 PM
@JimmyHoffa pfft... you mean you miss not having your bootloader need to know where to find its "stage2" payload because there's not enough free space in the MBR's boot sector for the whole boot loader?

@allquixotic I mean stage 2 is cool and all, I just wish stage 2 would stop showing off with it's "Oo I'm here I'm here! Hey guys look at this picture! It's probably a cat lolz! You want a boot message and login when I'm done? Fwahaha I'm busy wait what is that? Panic panic! I will give you nothing useful henceforth! Panic! Reboot reboot!"

Or the fun of swapping drive and LI.......
IIRC that is where it would hang

@Hennes haha ok that was always pretty great

@Hennes yep lol "LI"

at least it let you know very concisely something was a foot LI....... facepalm

6:40 PM
Still, given the space they had it was not bad
Time for food and some anime [planets]

@Hennes I just wish I could still do it. I miss the days that you didn't need a tool to update your kernel, you just moved it to the boot folder and reran lilo, tada. Now there's all kinds of magic it goes through in swibbing and swabbing grub to know that you have a new kernel

I love FreeBSD's nextreboot option
Try the new kernel... ONCE

Oh god I'd forgotten all about lilo

It it does not work, just reboot and back to the old one

@DarthAndroid it never forgot about you

6:45 PM
Damn Small Linux is working. However I haven't a clue if how to reach my computer's files from it. It's like it thinks the computer equals the USB key. Won't even give me the drive letter.
@allqui What should I do?

Did you open a command prompt and try dir C:/

@Ariane On the left of the graphic view of the disks (in disk manager) Right click and bring up the properties , then go to the "voumes" tab. it says MBr Or GPT in there.

@Psy It's been determined that it can't be the old thing, so all is fine.

If it says SPOON instead you're in trouble

means the computer is hungry?

6:48 PM
i know it was around there somwhere :-)

try listing the drives. E.g. fdisk -l
If it shows a /dev/sda1 NTFS sonenumber someotthernumer then sda1 is you windows NTFS volume

@nispio Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! I am this channel's helpful chat bot. Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help. For bot commands, type !!listcommands

mount that with mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mnt.
cd /mnt
ls

the help is that crap. Wait a sec I closed a settings dialog and it still decided to validate the like a retard. gotta fix that.

@Ariane sec
so you got it booted?

6:51 PM
yes.

@Ariane can you find anything that says "term" or terminal or terminate or tremors?

@Hennes WROOOOOONG!!!!
very important: ntfs-3g, not ntfs

@Hennes mount: only root can do that.

@Ariane type su first
should get # shell

it wants a password.

6:52 PM
@Ariane press enter
if it gives an error, type sudo bash

authentication failed.
$became #
oh yeah I'm root now. Simplistic user system.

@Ariane nice
with your # shell you can run the command Hennes typed, but instead of ntfs, use ntfs-3g
mkdir /mnt/windows; mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows
assuming you didn't already mount it on /mnt
(which is a bad practice)

@Ariane you need to get to the command prompt first, hit A,B,A,B,Up-Arrow,Down-Arrow,Ctrl+Shift+F2

@JimmyHoffa NO
she's already at the GUI

@OliverSalzburg cache...

6:56 PM
@allquixotic But my way involves a secret code :(

okay, everyone agree on something, please?

oh and if it's slow pres ctrl+shift+alt+'+' key, that unlocks turbo

@Ariane we already did -- Jimmy is just BSing you
ignore what he says
in your # shell just run
2 mins ago, by allquixotic
mkdir /mnt/windows; mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt/windows

understood

@allquixotic but...turbo mode...

6:58 PM
poop couldn't it do it automatically? Sigh.

@Ariane hey, you wanted the 50 MB download instead of the 700 MB download... Ubuntu would mount it automatically
