Mine wouldn't even let me format, it was that locked down (firmware/hardware failure :P)

@Bob Oh that sounds bad

So does anyone here use foobar ?

Bob
only for converting :P

@slhck It's been a while since I've seen a bundle this bad :-/

I find it incredibly useless ;p

1:03 PM
@HackToHell: It plays music
what the hell else do you want? ;p
yup

Awesome ass music management capabilities like WMP or Spotify

Bob
@JourneymanGeek it's actually great for batch audio conversion, sometimes with DSP :P

@DanielBeck Haha. I haven't actually checked out the apps yet. From their name, I don't know any except for Invoice.

It plays music. ;p
I don't need anything else ;p
It lets me queue it up, and lets me use some of the more exotic output methods
I don't need anything else ;p
@Bob: That too

Q: Don't automatically dismiss custom flags (containing a comment from a user)

GnoupiCurrently, when users are putting a custom flag on a post, there is a chance that this flag will be dismissed before a moderator could see it. For example, if it was a close flag, and the question got closed, all flags about the question are getting removed. Including custom ones. This was repor...

@slhck I'm pretty sure I own one or two competitors... bundles can get confusing... and I'm sure I have at least two licenses to iClip.

Ok, so my question is posted on meta.SO (cc: @slhck, @sathya @DanielBeck)

@Gnoupi +1 ... and then I read it and agreed as well.

@Bob And if... The problem is the names of the partitions? Before I install the new instance of win7 on the freespace, my original windows partition was named C:\.. But now, its name is D:\ and C:\ is just the partition "System reserved"... Originally, D:\ was the name of the Data partition...

Q: what is meaning of / (slash) in cd

rajEvery time while changing directory I'm using this below command, and its working fine. [max@localhost max]$ cd / [max@localhost /]$ cd /home/max/ [max@localhost max]$ pwd /home/max but today by mistake I enterd 2 // instaead of 1 / and its also works, so I tried with various example everyth...

Bob
@unNaturhal The letters are rather arbitrary. From recovery, C:\ will be the bootloader's partition (if it can find one). If it's found a bootloader's partition, the OS partition is usually pushed to D:\
That's why we use dir and diskpart to check

@unNaturhal Windows doesn't have to be installed on the C: drive

Bob
1:14 PM
When you set the partition in bcdedit, it will display the letter that is currently assigned to the volume. The actual stored value is the volume GUID.

@Bob Oh.. I see, so it cannot be the problem..
@Bob GUID?

Bob
@HaydnWVN IIRC, the drive you are booting from is always assigned C:\ at startup... I'm not sure of that, though :P

@HaydnWVN It was o.o

Bob
@unNaturhal It could be. Just make sure that the target volume contains Windows

Q: Which directory does path `//` represent in Linux?

Summer_More_More_TeaWhen I want to go back to upper level directory in Linux by typing cd .., I typo-ed cd //. To my great surprise, no errors are reported. What's more the prompt becomes username@hostname://$. ls indicates that I'm now at root directory. Is this a bug or a feature of the shell? If a feature, is //...

That one?

Bob
1:15 PM
@unNaturhal Globally Unique Identifier

@Bob Yeah, it contains..

@slhck nice

Bob
It's just an ID that's unique to the volume and doesn't change, unlike drive letters

@Bob the drive letters can 'move around' depending on the OS booted, i've got 2 Windows 7 installs on 1 of my machines on different drives, whichever I boot the C: drive is different (depending which OS is booted), then an old XP drive that only has a D:, E: and F: (no C:)

@slhck Possibly.

thanks @TomWijsman, but I don't need "legitimacy" :P

@Bob A few more rounds and you get ROT286 or ROT520, and they almost sound like a legitimate AES/SHA/... algorithm.

@JourneymanGeek Do you use last.fm ?

Q: How does my HD retain state when I disconnect my laptop battery?

zharveyTitle is pretty much self-explanatory. When I disconnect (take out) my laptop's battery for a few hours, then put it back in and turn my laptop on, I haven't lost any information. How is this possible?!? Is time of the essence here, or are there like "on-chip" power supplies that keep the HD supp...

@HackToHell No, there's a / in it.

@TomWijsman What else could it be ?

Furthermore, a MD5 hash is an integer so if you put it hexadecimal then you get [0-9A-F] characters, so the first letter already makes it not a MD5 hash.

1:52 PM
hmm ok, and ignore my question on what kind of hash it is

It isn't familiar to me.
The part after the slash might be a key used in the algorithm to get to the former.

2:06 PM
@Diogo if you're a subscriber & in US/UK, yes.
@Gnoupi agreed, it post got auto posted to Teacher's Lounge too

2:20 PM
@HackToHell: I don't torrent off my VPS. Not really enough hard disk space for that

@slhck That is a surprising question.

@HackToHell looks like base64 encoding

@Bob yes we e taking about that and I have no idea about it because I have not updated my FF version :]
@avirk I disagree that this is not a good reason to down vote. you should try to keep the answer updated, especially when pointed out by others. The downvote indicates that you should update the answer. — Sathya 9 hours ago

@Flexo @HackToHell Definite base64 but the origin is binary (rather than text)

@Sathya user should have to notify me not to down vote there until I don't give any feedback r edit the post

2:29 PM
@avirk user's free to do whatever they want.

@avirk: there's no 'should' for voting
while we occationally post about best practices, people are free to do as they like

@Sathya yeah but I'm just talking about generally for it not claiming that it should not to be

(and there's a post on this on meta)

@JourneymanGeek yup

and generally argueing over votes is a waste of breath ;p

@Sathya Bob says that it works foe him on F14 chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/5703509#5703509

though, those do work for me

@Paul it's exactly the right length to be a SHA-384 hash encoded in Base64

@Flexo yeah, 32 bytes. Lots of things are 32 bytes long though...

@JourneymanGeek I think then you can give a feedback to him as I have not tested it yet on FF14

@avirk: ahead of you there

@JourneymanGeek thanks for ur feedback and also +1 for me

Oh, i didn't upvote that ;p

@Sathya and @JourneymanGeek I need a little bit help however it will be a Google search but I'm not success yet

@JourneymanGeek really if u didn't then @Sathya
@JourneymanGeek but when you could then please I want a value phone for my father

I don't agree with complaining about downvotes. Fact checking though, I don't mind doing ;p

and I have not find a good one yet

@avirk: I'm on a wireless dongle thats worse than dialup ;p

@avirk you'd get better & faster response if you spit out what you need than keep asking "will you do this"

@Sathya :D

we're here, and In all probability we'll check it out. If we can't we'll reply so immediately, like how @JourneymanGeek has.

Also, I get my cheap phones from 7-11 in singapore ;p. Very different market from india ;p

Am I wrong about it? Apparently SO is taking moderation on the much "higher/lighter" level
I guess because of the volume
But even on SU, we (ok, you) would deal with that kind of flags, right?

4:31 PM
@Paul @Flexo Thanks for the help, I managed to skip hash cracking

@Gnoupi Well, it has changed I guess. Andrew has a point.
I, as a mod, don't want to be the decision maker for what is technically wrong or right.
Which doesn't mean I wouldn't delete an egregriously wrong answer after it has been downvoted into oblivion.

simply wrong answers are downvoted, that's the point

@Gnoupi Yeah, I think that didn't come across, despite of your very literal example.

I'll edit the answer, I guess
I blame the bold
people jump to the bold, and don't read the rest

Of course the problem lies in defining what is "dangerous".
It's a slippery slope from there, and unless the answer is write rm -rf / in a terminal!, I'd be unsure what to do with such a flag.
Wow, seriously?

@AndrewBarber on Super User if I know that the answer is egregiously bad, then I do mark the flags as helpful. If I'm on the fence, I tend to leave it for few hours and defer it to the other mods. lol, new reviewing system is making my inbox messages receive a lot of ocurrences from the comments the system writte for me when voting to delete low quality answers... superuser.com/a/293672/79358

12 hours ago, by Daniel Beck
Everyone, please take a moment to think about the applicability of the default comment templates before posting them. Complaining about link-only answers that should include the essential parts of the answer here and provide the link for reference isn't useful when the link is to i.stack.imgur.com, or to a product web site. For the latter, it'd be much better if you took the time to link to this meta topic instead.

I think the problem occurs when people see that an answer that was posted a long time ago is being comented for low quality today, years after any activity on them answers....
another thing that I noticed... if we are voting to delete things, why leave a comment on it if it will be probably deleted anyway?

5:19 PM
Chipping in to this discussion about not flagging blatantly wrong answers, what about answers that provide links that are now completely dead? Are those nuke-flag worthy? @Sathya @slhck

Can I shamelessly self-promote?
:)

@Mokubai Completely dead? No context? Nuke!

@Mokubai I usually flag them to delete, on new review system I just vote to delete wihout comment(if I didn't find a up link to replace the dead link)

@slhck Thank you. Blammo. :)

in Ask a Super User Moderator, Jul 30 at 15:01, by slhck
@diogo - if you flag for a broken link, try looking if you could replace the link with a working one, or if the link is not essential to the answer, just remove it. Then there's no need to flag, because we can't do anything else :)
in Ask a Super User Moderator, Jul 30 at 15:01, by slhck
For those answers that only consist of a broken link, flag away and we'll delete it, if there's no replacement.

5:24 PM
@slhck indeed :D

Makes sense. Where possible on link-only answers I've tried to find some context and if there's no way I've been flagging them so far.
My latest one even has a nice comment from when the answer was posted asking for the pertinent information to be linked...

@Mokubai Gotta love that…
@sidran32 Nice, I'll listen to that later

@slhck Thanks :)

@sidran32 Awww, when you start one going it stops the last one, what if I wanted them all playing at the same time?

@Mokubai Multiple instances of your browser? ;)

@sidran32 Nighttime is pretty cool

@Mokubai Thanks. :) I like the production in that one. I tend to showcase it as an example of my work, even though it's not as trancey as most of my other stuff. :P

I like electronic more than trance though :)
So that may explain my preference

No doubt. :) I like it too. I do a lot of trance, so it's comfortable for me, but now and then I try to stretch myself a bit. The Machine was a real exercise for me. Totally different than most anything else I've ever done. Not sure if I'm fully satisfied with it but it was fun.

About time I show you what one of my bands does.

@sidran32 The Machine? Am I missing it on that list?

5:31 PM
@Mokubai It's in there. I just uploaded a 12 track set a few days ago, so it's probably lower in the list.
Ya, page #2

@sidran32 Ah yes, missed the page 2 button
I've gotten too used to webpages scrolling to infinity without page swiping

I know. It seems like a blast from the past when they do that. :P

@Mokubai Hm? I don't see anything :)

@slhck Dagnabit, shoulda flagged it ;)
I considered posting a "I have no idea what you are actually suggesting here" comment
I kinda get the idea he's suggesting installing Win7 in a virtual machine, but I'm not sure

@Mokubai Not even an active user account, could barely understand what they were talking about, so, meh

IIRC... something along the lines of: "run disk2vhd to get your vista into a vhd file then install winy7 onto your new machine then for fun install your vhd into vpc and have fun running vista in that!!!"
Except with even worse grammar and punctuation.

Anyone had any experience with VDSL?

5:52 PM
I just upvoted an answer without reading it. >.> I'm bad.

Tempted to get my ISP to upgrade me but it appears I'm out of touch with technology and missed this development. I'd known about FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) but missed FTTC + VDSL (Fibre to the Curb) as an alternative...

I'm pretty sure that FTTC + VDSL means they just built out fiber to your neighborhood but the connection from the curb to your house is regular old copper wire? It's slower than FTTP.
(IIRC)
But obviously better than no fiber at all...

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, you get 40Mbit VDSL to a fibre in your local curbside box

Ya. The copper is a bottleneck. I don't know why, but it is. Presumably, bandwidth issues.

I get a pretty good speed anyway but the 40Mbit is still tempting

5:56 PM
Best thing to do would be to find a neighbor who has it already and ask their opinion of the service. :)

@sidran32 copper is crap at moving bits, too much friction because of the need to move fat electrons around.

@Mokubai I'm not an expert in the physics of it, but that sounds about right. :P
I should probably ask my uncle about it sometime... his work is basically in researching/developing new fiber-optic technologies.

Coincidentally fat electrons are what make your computer crash, they find it difficult to get around the sharp turns in your processor circuitry...

@Mokubai Totally makes sense! The solution must be to put more gradual curves in our circuitry, right?

Exactly, or get a "power conditioner" which traps the fat electrons in little loops to make them work harder to loose weight while letting the thin electrons through. UPS'es work well too because they can just put the fat electrons in the batteries...

6:01 PM
Ah... that's why bigger batteries supply more power... they can fit more electrons. :o

Yeah, but you've got to be careful because the fat electrons take up more space in batteries than the thin ones, and they find it harder to escape so they just sit there taking up space until eventually your battery can't hold a good charge.

nods. So, the longer I let the battery sit there, the electrons are just hanging out getting fatter and fatter. That makes the battery supply less and less over time... gotcha.

Exactly ^_^

IMGUR - Over bandwidth limit?
OCZ SSDs have 25% of failure rate of all of their market?

So far as I know, SSDs have been very finnicky in terms of stability due to controller bugs. Though I think it's getting better, it was pretty bad, ya.

8:17 PM
@sidran32 OCZ's or all SSDs in the whole world?

@sidran32 as of late, I have not heard of any real issues with them

@Boris_yo I think it was in general (though there were also few manufacturers of the controllers, anyway). As @soandos said, I think these days there aren't many issues like in past years.
