12:02 AM
He just told me the ebay vendor, and I clicked Buy :D

@OliverSalzburg he told me the ebay vendor, and i hemmed and hawwed, and then clicked buy :P

@nhinkle For me, this is a dream come true.

I'll ask the e bay vendor, save for between 2-4 months, shove the money into paypal, hem and haww,a nd click buy ;p
is poor ;p

12:07 AM
I always wanted a screen setup like this. And this is better than anything I could have imagined. Really happy with this purchase

@OliverSalzburg what do you have on the sides? And did yours already arrive?

@nhinkle I bought 1 27". On the sides, I have my old, 2 24" screens.
One of the 24" was more expensive when I bought it, than the 27" now.

yeah nice 24" monitors aren't usually cheap. my housemate bought one last year for like $300, and it was on major sale

Like, the 24 cost 400€ 4 years ago. The 27" cost 330€ today.

did your 27" get there already? i ordered mine last week and it's just left Korea :/

12:10 AM
I got mine in 4 days
It's the one in the picture

suspects shipping is a good chunk of the cost
@OliverSalzburg: DVI dual link only or does it have other inputs?

@JourneymanGeek Shipping was "free"

@OliverSalzburg: to you. ;p
but shipping isn't cheap for something that big

@JourneymanGeek Dual-Link DVI. But my GFX card has Dual-Link outputs.

12:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek Well, it was factored into the price, I'd assume. But it was still extremely cheap. And the it was shipped very fast.

yup
(which makes the monitors even more of a steal)

@JourneymanGeek I didn't even know that existed before buying this screen. I still thought dual-link means you need 2 cables (or at least 2 outputs on you card).

XD
@OliverSalzburg: On the bright side, the IBM T220/230 needed TWO of those...

I'm going to do some testing when mine arrives to see how it works with other connections, like DisplayPort converters.

@Zuul Welcome :)

12:20 AM
Hi there everyone!
Some heavy players around here! Must behave myself ;)

.... I am so out of touch with display connectors
really? WHERE?
You can convert DVI to HDMI and DP passively can't you?

you can convert DisplayPort into either DVI or HDMI
DVI and HDMI are basically identical and can be converted with ease, but depending on the revision of HDMI, it may be limited to 1080p
but when dealing with DVI Dual-Link, you typically need an active converter

@diogo how did you get the RTM already? It doesn't come out even on MSDN for another week!

1:21 AM
Gah, now that I work in the domain name industry, I'm really tempted to register gimmick domain names that could be valuable one day. lol.
BTW, has anyone ever used Bazaar as a version control system? I keep hearing that you don't need it installed on a remote server to push to that remote server. But I'm not finding any clear examples on how to do that.

1:52 AM
lol

2:36 AM
lifehacker.com/5933286/… I need to check this out when i get home ;p

3:22 AM
hmm, toshiba started making hard drives again, yay

I really hate Apple right now... Anyone know a legal place to download OSX 10.6? I need to reinstall...

3:35 AM
@Luke do you not have the disks? Are you looking to download an "installer" or a regular ISO?

I had my Mac ready for my triple boot... Went to go install Windows 7
I had a partition the same size as before, so I was just going to do a System Image Restore, but it killed my partition table, and my Mac side isn't being read anymore
I would like an ISO, ideally, as my disks are gone since the move :(
I'm in a NEW Windows 7 install right now, and need to hold the <kbd>Option</kbd> key during boot up, type in my EFI password, THEN select the Windows partition, even though it's the only partition the system sees right now

huh
that's weird

Yup

hmmmm.

So my backup is still on the external hard drive... But I have a fresh Windows 7 install, and that's it

3:39 AM
well i have access to a 10.6 disk, but it wouldn't be any more legal for me to send you an ISO than it would be for you to find any of the many widely available public venues to do the same

... And DMGs are useless to me right now
I don't want to torrent :(

Is it technically even illegal if you own a license to the OS already to download media elsewhere? I would certainly say it's ethically OK.
the best alternative if you're bent on doing it 100% legal might be finding a disk on eBay or something ebay.com/sch/…

Canada has some screwed up laws since Bill C-11

(although i'm not entirely sure if that's "100%" legal or not)

I'll try to burn one from work tomorrow :(

3:42 AM
you have any friends with a disk?

No, I'm shunned being an Apple user in my town... Lol

i'll restrain from doing the same :P

/me hides in a bush until @nhinkle rides past

The legal part is tricky
;p

Legal in what way? :P
jk

3:50 AM
Unlike women, software thats over 18 is past its prime ;p
4
;p

LMAO

@Luke: it should be possible to obtain a retail ISO through less than legitimate sources.

Anyone here ever give someone a pi out of 5?

Ya, but in Canada, my Internet is monitored

I'd help if i was back at home ;p
.... actually....
hm, no, I don't have access to any system on homenet :/

3:53 AM
I tried

@JourneymanGeek A customer called in the other day because he was having trouble connecting via FTP to his web hosting/server. Turns out he was using an FTP client built for windows 2000 on his windows vista PC... It ran, but it didn't work.

:)

@iglvzx: I had a win2k box at one point quite recently
It got dropped twice and stopped working :/

:P

3:58 AM
I rather liked the system, 1400x1050 15 inch screen
granted, I have a cheap 20 inch screen
(which I seem to think is lower res. gotta get me one of em koreans ;p)

4:25 AM
K, part 2 of my question...
Anyone got Bootcamp 3.0 drivers for Windows x64 7?

My phone has an OLED screen. And it's suffering from burn in, of all things...

lol
OLED does have a limited lifespan yanno

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, just wasn't expecting it to happen so quickly
sigh

6:49 AM
> Thanks in advance...:)
being nice wasn't good enough, smiley in backticks was added for extra niceness

7:22 AM
@Luke those should be available online, but if you don't find them by tomorrow, i can possibly get you some.

3 hours later…
Bob
10:03 AM
yay, FF 15 is supposed to fix at least some of those memory leaks (caused by addons, but meh)
not I'm just debating whether to grab the beta or not :P

A: What can I do to detect changes to my computer from a program?

Ignacio Vazquez-AbramsThere's hooks for every sort of event you'd care about somewhere in the OS. So to directly answer your question, yes.

So where exactly did he get his reputation from? :S

10:25 AM
@TomWijsman By getting an average of 2.36 upvotes on his answers

morning everyone

Bob
@DanielBeck hi

@TomWijsman From people thinking this is worth 290 rep.

Bob
@DanielBeck Ah, short, sweet, and generally useless for those who actually want to know how or why :P

@Bob That's his niche.
@TomWijsman If you're bored, you could determine his average answer length on Data, or his rep/character ratio.

10:33 AM
Already done in the past, not specifically targetting him but he always shows up on such.

So this really shouldn't be a surprise...

A: How to set TCP SEQ number generation

Ignacio Vazquez-AbramsThe algorithm is buried deep in the TCP/IP stack's code.

Bob
huh

It's just sad this one got accepted. It's answerable through reverse engineering, but hey, nobody will care anymore now it's answered...

Bob
is data.SE not linked with the other SE accounts?

10:35 AM
@TomWijsman Sometimes it backfires. But it still paid 7 rep.

@TomWijsman I replied to that, hopefully I hit the right note :P

Yeah, not a surprise, but he isn't learning himself...
@OliverSalzburg Demonstrates once again how a third person that read the whole thing can bring over the message better.
Hmm, nice to see we're almost through the review beta queues. Although the review lists seem to have quite some more questions ready for us...

@TomWijsman They'll just increase the quality level cutoff.
That's my guess at least. I have never seen a crap answer with +1 score, for example.

Not a bad idea.
More problematic will be our minds moving along that change.
I mean, we have a certain vision of what's low quality; if they change the limit it might be that we end up approving most of the low quality posts.
Whereas there is a possibility we can suggest improving them instead...
If bored, there's still stackoverflow.com/review though. :D
Delete, delete, delete, delete... Sadly my keyboard shortcuts don't work for the automatic comments yet, perhaps I might just make it automatically pick "no comment" as I have auto review comments anyway.

Many users posting crap, not that many willing to clean up, so the crap levels stay high.
Close vote reviews are an average of 3x the reviews per SO user over the same ranked SU user. Compared to the size difference of SO und SU, that's not enough.

@HackToHell well a friend of mine tried to contact BSNL about the same thing, they didn't do shit

@nhinkle I work for a computer manufacturer in Brazil, my work is testing Windows performance...

Bob
SQL sometimes just makes me want to hit something :\

which flavour?

Bob
11:04 AM
MS

@slhck That is the reason why I wondered about the comment system to posts that are suposed to be deleted a little time after reviewed... But I agree, if user don't really exists, I will not post any comment on delete recomendation...

Bob
I'm the kind of guy who minimises SQL use by doing as much of the processing as possible in the parent program/language. Yes, I know it's bad :P

I didn't downvote. My guess would be lack of research shown by you. (also: stop calling me "Sir". We're all peers here, not supervisors) — Sathya 3 mins ago

Bob
Ah, "sir"... so stereotypically Indian here :\

I know.

Bob
11:08 AM
Is it because of how English is taught, or are they/you just that polite formal normally? :P

lol
both

I really don't understand this horrible YouTube performance I'm getting lately :(

@OliverSalzburg I'm experiencing the same since some weeks ago... It is probably due to some specific peer/server I think...

@Diogo I can't watch a single video. Quality doesn't matter

@OliverSalzburg lol.... I can watch them, but it is quite slow, need 5 min of buffering before starting to see it...

11:14 AM
@Diogo Yeah, that's an option for me as well.
But, sometimes, I copy the link into Firefox and the whole video is loaded instantly...
Which makes even less sense :D
Oh well

@HaydnWVN You lose control over your data

support costs probably similar, possibly lower with a hosted service

@Bob them Brits' schooling system influence

Bob
@DanielBeck Dead? :S
Unless I'm mis-skim-reading that, it's just going open source?

11:36 AM
@Bob The original developers need food too. How much full-time development do you think a $0 price tag per user will pay for?

Bob
@DanielBeck Well, typically these projects ask for donations/rely on external developers. Not sure how well they actually work, though.

Maybe using the editor as a framework for specialized bundles created for specific customer will be a business model that works, but I'm not holding my breath.
Let's just say I'm glad I paid for Sublime Text 2 and now need to make the switch complete on my Mac as well.

11:51 AM
Argh. The Intel graphics driver captures Ctrl+Alt+Arrow hotkeys to turn the display. The same hotkeys Winamp uses for global volume control.
So, you can disable the hotkeys in the Intel driver.
But that only disabled their functionality, they're still capturing them...

@OliverSalzburg Yeah I have this on my Lenovo G560
SSD Intel or SSD Crucial? Who is more reliable?

@Boris_yo Well, I'm pretty sure that Intel will handle my report of this issue with the highest priority...

lenovo = lazynovo

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Depends on which one?
Oddly enough, I've never owned a computer that does it...
But every public computer I use can! :P

Maybe you still need to enable them :P

Bob
11:57 AM
Mine doesn't even have the Hot Keys option! (I think)
I'll go check :P

Ah
Well, I'd prefer it if it wasn't there :P But I also haven't really looked into the issue and possible solutions yet.
It's just frustrating that this is even an issue :\

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Are you using BuyVM?
@OliverSalzburg Makes me wonder just how often people need to rotate their displays :P
huh

@Bob The worst things is, I only have 1 screen on the Intel Graphics. So I was adjusting my volume, suddenly one of the screens rotates... O__o

Bob
it does have hotkeys, and it is enabled, but`Ctrl` + Alt + <arrow> does nothing

Ctrl+Alt+Arrow

Bob
12:01 PM
@OliverSalzburg typo in the chat message :P

Interesting

:D Why it sucks to have Scorpion as dad?

Bob
There's nothing on a hotkey for rotate in the options

Hah! Solved. I just being an idiot :D I haven't restarted Winamp in ages so it never had the option to re-register the hotkeys...

Bob
Come to think of it, I can't find any option to rotate my screen anywhere...
o.O
@OliverSalzburg If you really don't like the rotation, @OliverSalzburg, you can probably set that value to 0 :P

12:13 PM
> Iam from Germany and i found a Solution!
:D
@Bob Everything is working now. Thanks :)

Bob
12:25 PM
@OliverSalzburg Uhm... what did I do? :P

@Sathya Dumb ass BSNL :/

12:42 PM
@OliverSalzburg Isn't Cntrl+Alt+Arrow for rotate in Win7?

@HaydnWVN It's not an OS functionality.

hmmm maybe not
ctrl+windows key+up arrow = blackness :o

Bob
lol
ninja edit? :P

ctrl+winkey+up arrow = blackness

Bob
@HaydnWVN that's absolutely nothing for me

1:11 PM
hmmm - its a shortcut to allow me to edit my previous comment
neat :D

Awesome guy

tune anyways ;)
/me skanks

@DanielBeck > Macros, third-party add-ins, and VBA support will all be dropped from the Office 2013 RT edition, and one source says a "small number" of other features have also been removed.
Bit early for "not a real MS Office" IMHO ;)

@OliverSalzburg No macros or VBA support. Please show me an Office power user who doesn't use them.

That Samsung report is insane, especially given how bad their Android customizations are :D

Even I do (to delete attachments from emails), and I'm certainly not an Office power user.

@DanielBeck I'm not even able to show you any Office power user :D

Many probably don't even know they are, they just use what they're provided by IT, which is a heavily customized Office package.
VxWorks, developed by Wind River Systems (which was acquired by Intel), is a real-time operating system used in a huge number of embedded systems. The previous Mars rovers (Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity), Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft all use VxWorks. VxWorks also powers BMW iDrive, the Apache Longbow helicopter, and the Apple Airport Extreme and Linksys WRT54G routers (really).

Can someone suspend that clown for 24 hours?

This user feels like the students that seem forced to ask some questions we had a while ago...

hi, tomorrow I'm going to purchase laptop can someone suggest me the best laptop configuration for java programming and eclipse. i3 processor or i5 processor, RAM 2 GB or 4/8GB , any suggestions ?

@raghav application server, or just a regular java app?

application server like Jboss, weblogic , tomcat and sql server as well

@raghav You need minimum 4gb, or you'll spend your time swapping
more would be better
Of course, a 64bits OS, to access more than 3gb

2:50 PM
4GB is ok , sorry i didn't get the second statement swapping... ??

disk swapping. When the memory is full, it writes to the disk, and it's really slow, in short
4gb minimum, i'd say, especially if you run your own database, you could need more to be at ease
the cpu, I don't know.

oh k, processor ? One curious question system speed depends on processor or RAM ?

speed depends on processor, as long as you have enough ram, most of the time. The main bottleneck is when you don't have enough ram

ok can i go with i3(2nd gen) and 4GB RAM, and set 2 OS's
a) some Linux distribution
b) Windows7 32 bit
Will it run faster or okay ?

@raghav Why Win7 32bit? No point having over 3GB RAM without going 64 bit
Ideally go for the fasted i3 (quad core) with at least 6GB RAM and Win 7 64bit
that you can afford :)

2:57 PM
honestly I have no idea and exposure to 32 bit and 64 bit , suggest & guide me.

If 8GB RAM is an option and within your price range, take it, but don't sacrifice the processor speed for it

i think i can afford upto 8GB RAM, but processor a little tuff for me. I can go for i3 2nd generation. Will it be feasible ?

@raghav In short, the OS can't use more than 3gb of ram, if 32bits
@raghav there are other differences, but that's the main one that you should care about

One to remember - the higher end i3's and lower end i5's actually cross over... Some of the higher end i3's are quicker than the lower end i5's.

3:05 PM
Oh k , so ultimately an 8GB RAM is swift even if i use Dual Operating systems(1. Linux 2.windows 7) with an i3 2nd generation processor. Am I right ?

@raghav should be good, yes

one quick question, never mind . Should the windows7 OS be a 32 bit or 64 bit in my case ? I don't understand the difference in terms of memory consumption . Which one suits my case

@raghav In short, you need 64 bits to use your 8gb of ram. It's not a matter of memory consumption, it's simply that the system can't use more than 3,something gb of memory with 32 bits

Q: 32-bit vs. 64-bit systems

Mehper C. PalavuzlarWhat are the differences between 32-bit and 64-bit systems? If you have used both of them, what kind of sharp differences have you experienced? Would it be a problem to use 32-bit programs on 64-bit systems in some cases?

64 bit to be able to use the larger amount of RAM, you have no benefit for using 32 bit except if you have applications which will only work under 32 bit

@HaydnWVN You mean 16 bit or lower.
32 bit works natively on 64 bit, anything below 32 bit doesn't.

3:16 PM
It's if you have hardware without 64 bits drivers, that you have a problem
but that's becoming quite rare

That too.

To illustrate my problem, Imagine I have 8GB RAM and i3 processor, so far so good , i don't understand logic of using 64 bit os to this configuration, why is it not recommended to use 32 bit os.
okay thanks for your time.

3:32 PM
It's not a choice. If you want 8Gb of RAM, you need a 64 bits OS

this answer is damn straight got it

@TomWijsman I have 4 different applications here (3 bespoke) that will not function at-all under Windows 64 bit
The networks i support are probably 75% Windows 7 32bit for that reason, the rest are Windows XP/2000. We only have 3 Windows 7 64 bit machines.
And before you ask - the applications were written with Windows 2000 & XP in mind, so definately not 16-bit apps :P

Windows 2000 and XP can run 16-bit...

As can Windows 7
One of the apps we use that doesn't work within 64bit, look 16bit to you? :P
ewww @ huge jpg, sorry!

3:55 PM
@HaydnWVN Just because you didn't feed it the library it needs? Because that should run fine on 64-bit.

We have some screens which run, some which seem to work 'ok', others crash randomly, others run but then won't connect to the SQL server
others refuse to open at all
it's odd as they're all written by the same company, all connect to the same SQL source and the .exe's are cached locally
our external software guys have always said to steer away from 64 bit, stating 'it was never programmed in a 64 bit environment', but I hear some of their current builds (non-stable) have at least been tested on 64bit. I've no idea if they're 100% compatible or we'll even see them as we're using a highly customised version of their default package.
It was developed as a cinema ticket EPOS style system... We run a customised version for growing and selling plants!
The solution we use as full CRM, Sales, Accounting, Stock and Pricing... It was a fully functioning ERP solution... Before the ERP name was introduced
and on that note i'm going home to paint my garden fence lol
have a good weekend all

4:14 PM
@nhinkle Nah, I found "other means" to get it
Anyone know of methods to put a .DMG as a bootable image onto a USB drive without access to OSX to do it with?

4:39 PM
Nvm, found an answer, testing it out

@Sathya you closed his doubt! :(

5:05 PM
HI guys

Morning @avirk

Finally got my Talktive badge :P
@Luke Morning and its 10:35PM here :P

I'm on the weird part of the internet again... happyplace.com/17404/…

@TomWijsman I'm facing very big problem of electricity and my lapi battery is at the end of its days
you are just facing very tiny one

@avirk It's 10:09 hrs here

5:10 PM
@Luke Canada has 12:30 hrs diff from India
My sister is married there

@avirk Depends on which part of Canada.
(India probably too?)

@DanielBeck could be I'm not sure all about
@DanielBeck No in India it would be just in minutes no in hrs

I know only one Indian time zone, UTC+5:30 or so...

In India GMT +5:30
@DanielBeck only that one is used

Well, Canada has several, from UTC-8 (British Columbia) to UTC-2:30 (Newfoundland). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Canada

5:14 PM
Hey guys I'm want to change my lapi battery and its a 4 yr old model so is it possible to get a new model battery which are giving a good backup (If any fit with my laptop model)?
@DanielBeck Hmmmm that's a good info for me
@DanielBeck are you from Canada?

@avirk No, Germany, why?

@DanielBeck as you have the good knowledge of time zone of Canada
Battery drained out very fast just gives me only 20-30 min backup :(

Well, I knew that the US had around 4 time zones, and Canada's a even a bit wider (longitude), so no surprise there.

Bye guys

This seems accurate:

5:28 PM
Isn't it nice to know that Java's safe?

No one could ever craft an exploit using Java to hack into someone's computer! /sarcasm

So far it's basically the only security measure I have on my Mac. Disable Java in the browser.

5:51 PM
@DanielBeck Nice...

I got this app and am starting to test it out... for sleep and attention.
It uses the concept of binaural beats to affect your brainwaves.'
