9:08 PM
@TomWijsman welcome back

Time to get a new SSD :-/

@DanielBeck Your Mac?

Yes

Which tool did you use for that?

xbench
can you recommend something else?

9:18 PM
No, I've never ever benchmarked a computer

Thought it might be better than "things feel sluggish sometimes"

Huh.
You should probably get a new SSD as well.

Things never feel sluggish for me.

No reason not to buy shiny new hardware!

9:20 PM
$$$ €€€?

That could be though.
Call it research and let the Uni pay?

@DanielBeck Don't remind me of how much pain I went through to have a SATA drive bought.
But seriously, which numbers would you expect?
I'm not up to date with hardware these days.

I don't know. Bigger ones. Reads are supposed to be fast on SSDs, not 14MB/s

Yeah.. true that.
Hm.
As long as the machine works for what I need it's fine though.
I'm rather worrying about the drive breaking down at some point.

9:23 PM
Vertex IV claims 550 MB/s sequential reads.

The VM is 33.6GB...

Meh

@slhck Everybody can do sequential reads quickly.

@DanielBeck Yeah, just looked up something for comparison :P

@slhck Any idea why Finder reports wrong free disk space here?

9:25 PM
@DanielBeck Not really. It's not like it wasn't taking Trash into account or anything.

df says:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/disk1 223Gi 203Gi 20Gi 92% 53309851 5206072 91% /

Huh?
Try rebooting :P
But no idea really.

I think it's /.MobileBackups which should get auto-deleted but doesn't...

Hm.. What kind of feature is that? Is that new since 10.7?
Oh, it is. Interesting. Where have I been the last few years?

I think so. Provides Time Machine backups for quickly restoring files to a recent state while not connected to the backup drive.
Academia.

9:29 PM
lol... true

I remember one of my professors complaining about Apple removing OS 9 support in 10.5 or so because of PageMaker or something like that. That was in... 2008.
Although businesses with more than around 4 employees are no different...

They let people use Apple machines there?
I feel like an outcast in my office because I insisted on having a Mac Mini.

Heh. Because of him (head of the institute with 20 or so people) all of them have to use Macs... and boot into Windows.

Classic.

With external Apple keyboards, complaining about never finding the Print key, etc.

9:33 PM
Why though? Software that only runs on Windows?

No idea. Maybe. Or they're just used to it.
Remember, that was 3-5 years ago, maybe things have changed.

Now they got real Windows machines :P

163GB used, 240 total... turns out Finder is apparently just being an asshole.
Or it doesn't like users deleting stuff from it's private storage. Who knows?

@Diogo you might want to pay more attention to when you are using the link-only deletion recommendation, it's not really relevant for people to copy in information to prevent link rot for webapps: superuser.com/questions/75710/how-to-extract-fonts-from-pdf/…
Yeah, tablet autocorrect "fixed" it...

I mean there's no point posting these comments on posts where the user account doesn't even exist anymore.

9:40 PM
Well, that too...

It teaches passing by visitors that come across the comment.

Alright, cleaned up that question a little.

A little?

Heh.
I mean how can a question have 10k views and no one would bother to fix the broken links in the top voted answer?
Anway, I'm off

Who pays attention to the links? ;-)

9:45 PM
Btw PSA: Not going to be here until Aug. 20th – on tour with my band.

G"night

So behave folks :P

Woo! Mods on holiday!

@slhck have fun

Will there be a live stream of the tour?

9:47 PM
@TomWijsman No, I'll be glad to even have cellphone reception :P
Anyway, see ya folks!

Have fun, cya.

@slhck You're in a band?

2 hours later…
11:25 PM
Typical. Price of the laptop goes down the day after I order it.

11:42 PM
@nhinkle In Canada, there's a law that if the price drops within 30 days or something, you're entitled to a refund down to the new price on certain things

lol
morning!

Morning! I'm almost off work though

@JourneymanGeek Morning to you as well :)

@Luke I checked and it turns out Lenovo has a 21 day price guarantee, that if the price goes down, you get the difference refunded

11:46 PM
i talked to their chat support people and apparently need to come back during a different time tomorrow

@slhck who got one now?

@nhinkle I got one a few days ago, don't know if anyone else got one recently as well

lol
I'll get one once everything else is done on my new comp ;p

@OliverSalzburg cool. Which one did you get?

11:50 PM
?

@nhinkle The same Jeff did :D FSM-270YG or something like that
Yeah, exactly that actually

ah, i think that's the one i got too
the Achieva one?

ahh the slightly nicer ones? ;p

is likely to get a catleap, and mod the base. Not sure if he wants to get a slightly nicer dp ed model tho

11:52 PM
@nhinkle That name doesn't ring a bell
The box it came in said FIRST

@JourneymanGeek wdym by "mod the base"? I got the Achieve specifically because the stand is more easily removable. You have to entirely open up the Catleap to remove the stand, and risk breaking the whole thing.

@nhinkle: I'm assuming the problem with wobbliness is cause the ring at the bottom is too narrow
and not weighted like most monitors

Just get one with a removable stand and a VESA mount. Then get a good mount.

Even if you would have to tape the thing to the wall with duct tape, it would still be worth it

(besides, one advantage of being too poor to be an early adoptor, I can ask you guys what you think ;p)
precisely ;p
@nhinkle: Also, I do have experience cracking open a monitor

11:55 PM
I put a book under mine to raise it. Perfect

actually I've cracked open 3 monitors at least twice each ;p

I was lucky to be able to draw from @Ivo's experience.
