2:43 AM
Hi all
What is the purpose of usb thumb drive with big storage ( like 32Gb and 64Gb )? I think the storage is far bigger than we need. For backup data on the PC, it is not big enough. For normal data transfer, it is too big. Could you find any usage with big usb thumb drive?

@gunbuster363, I can think of a couple of uses:
1) Storing a live OS
2) Holding lots of data
3) Holding all of debian (33 or more GB last I checked)
4) holding many tools (this is what I use mine for)

I probably don't need so much space for a live OS. I just installed a Fedora in a 1Gb usb drive....of coz just the live one. What kind of tool consume so much space?

@gunbuster363: lots of tools.
;p

@OliverSalzburg Thanks, wikipedia saves the day

In theory though, i'd love one of those for a windows 8 portable install

3:04 AM
@JourneymanGeek, any idea why the win 8 bootloader is so weird?

define wierd

when I pick windows seven, everything has to restart, then it goes into windows 7 without actually getting to the win 7 bootloader

they got it booting fast enough that they claim they need to add an artificial delay

or the win 8 bootloader

ahh
then no, i don't dualboot it

3:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek, what the heck does that mean?

(actually i don't have an install of it)

@soandos i think it's because of Windows 7 loader

@HackToHell, what do you mean?

@soandos: allegedly the process happens so fast, they had to add a small delay to switch oses...
practically, i'm not sure.

@JourneymanGeek, that sounds overly fishy...

3:06 AM
sounds like market speak ;p
it DOES boot fast tho

This thing caused quite a rage

@JourneymanGeek, agreed. And stragely enough, win 7 boots faster using the win 8 bootloader also

It allows you to get updates as if your computer was legal when it actually is not

@JourneymanGeek, who is that addressed to?

3:07 AM
You guys do not know about it ??

darn it, i might be tempted to dualboot

@HackToHell, not seeing what that is coming to prove...

er
he means the windows 8 bootloader
not an SLIC injection thing ;p

@soandos With Win8's loader, the process is encrypted and it can't be done

@HackToHell, what can't be done?

3:08 AM
unless someone breaks that too

besides, why would i pirate an os i can get for free from school?

@soandos SLIC injection thing

@HackToHell, who is talking about that?

okay leave it...

@JourneymanGeek, @HackToHell I wonder if someone has pirated windows 8 yet...

3:11 AM
lol
there's prolly no point to it until the final release, is there?

I have no idea
but I think there have to be poeple working on it even now
I always have faith that there are some people that will try very hard to do the wrong thing
so far, it has never let me down

There will surely be people trying hard to crack Win 8 bootloader too
It's kinda their work

@HackToHell, why crack a bootloader?

@soandos So as to port forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/… that to Win 8
The application itself injects a SLIC (System Licensed Internal Code) into your system before Windows boots; this is what fools Windows into thinking it's genuine.
In Win 8, you can't do that...

@HackToHell, but doesn't windows updates ask for the install code?

@HackToHell, interesting read

@soandos You linux/mac guy ?

@HackToHell, no, I am very much a windows guy
but I am aware of UEFI (intel concept if I recall correctly, and the way microsoft is implementing "Secure Boot")

Mac uses UEFI too

@HackToHell, right, I came across this when someone wanted to implement switchable graphics on a mac, under windows

3:23 AM
yes, chameleon makes Lion think it's under UEFI

Good night all

Good night

4:04 AM
Wow. p2pool just nailed a bitcoin block in 48 minutes
Oh
Actually last week they got one in 10 minutes, so perhaps it isn't a big deal

1 hour later…
5:14 AM
Finally found an awesome GUI for handbrake that is capable of pausing, I present to you VidCoder !

http://vidcoder.codeplex.com/
Blu ray discs are awesome

5:34 AM
wish people will stop linking to crap like this

6:15 AM
aww
It isn't an answer

2 hours later…
8:24 AM
@Sathya: Regarding your issue, is the file I mentioned in my answer here untampered with?

@TomWijsman I haven't touched it..

BTW the question you linked in the comments to my question contains the full version string, which technically allows you to remove and add the default search engine.
@Sathya Well, I would think an update touched either one of those. But it could be on Google's end as well.
(Although I would think that if one of there services has a problem that it would be more wild spread)

@TomWijsman considering the number of people running into it, it seems likely to be a problem at Google's end

google.com/… works for me.
Perhaps you could see what URL it auto generates for you.

8:28 AM
Hmm weird, it goes automatically to blank.html for you. Would be handy if you catched the unredirected one to compare a difference in parameters.
Haha, first link the fix that should not be done. xD

yep
lunch time, back later

Because, if you can figure out the unmodified URL you can see what parameter it is inserting wrong without having to disable instant, but oh well, Google themselves is on it. Although it seems to be taking long for them...

Q: deleting /bin entries in linux

babak6I have installed CentOS. I want to remove bzip2, so I enter this command in the shell: yum remove bzip2 bzip2-libs Then nearly 500 packages were removed and I can't enter any command. For example: ls -bash: /bin/ls no such file or directory How can I re-install the lost packages?

Dear $deity_array ... Why?

@JourneymanGeek I don't know about CentOS, but with Gentoo it's easy: Insert LiveCD, and then either unpack the base portage (if portage was affected by one's stupidity) or otherwise just chroot into the system and fix it that way (if you broke the kernel or part of the login phase).

I mean why would someone remove it ;p
and ya, gentoo is 'nicer' in that sense

8:35 AM
Well, if you don't need bzip2 you don't need it.
But seems like it's a low-level dependency.
!!! 'app-arch/bzip2' is part of your system profile.
!!! Unmerging it may be damaging to your system.
Now that's clear... :D
TOMWIJ-GENTOO ~ # equery depends bzip2
 * These packages depend on bzip2:
app-arch/libarchive-3.0.3 (bzip2 ? app-arch/bzip2)
app-arch/unzip-6.0-r1 (bzip2 ? app-arch/bzip2)
app-arch/zip-3.0-r1 (bzip2 ? app-arch/bzip2)
dev-lang/perl-5.16.0 (app-arch/bzip2)
dev-lang/python-2.7.3-r2 (app-arch/bzip2)
dev-lang/python-3.2.3-r1 (app-arch/bzip2)
dev-libs/elfutils-0.154 (bzip2 ? app-arch/bzip2)
dev-libs/libpcre-8.30-r2 (bzip2 ? app-arch/bzip2)
gnome-base/gnome-vfs-2.24.4-r1 (app-arch/bzip2)
media-gfx/gimp-2.8.0-r1 (bzip2 ? app-arch/bzip2)
WOW
If I add the indirect parameter it just keeps on scrolling...
> You have exceeded the maximum file size of 500 kilobytes per paste.
There, that should be clear. Seems like unmerging that is the most effective way of uninstalling about everything.

9:23 AM
Huh
What's up with this question:
It's listed as modified by community (10 mins ago) with that link
But there's no recent edits, there's an accepted answer, and the asker hasn't been seen since May...

o0
Actually, thanks for reminding me to protect it.
Wonder if it has anything to do with that spammer being deleted.

Bob
So not an auto unanswered question bump, no edits visible, and answers have a name

@Bob deleted post.

Bob
@Sathya Oh? That changes the "modified 10 mins ago" to belong to Community?
:S
Probably is the user being deleted, as @JourneymanGeek said... since the last few times an answer got deleted, the user name was still used.
no longer confused

9:26 AM
@Bob spammer posted an answer, bumped it up. Spammer was destroyed, activity is mapped to spammer to keep track

Bob
9:41 AM
@Sathya Yea, thanks for the clarification :P

This sub-reddit is... weird.

Bob
@TomWijsman o.O
Once an hour...

What is the "default resolver" in a DNS zone context?
I'm trying to get a nameserver registered with denic
And their tool is telling me the error "Default resolver determined: []"
And now I'm expected to fix that

10:28 AM
Where do I ask questions about DIY stuffs? Electrical engg?

What kind of DIY?
Because there's:
But I bet you don't mean that kind of stuff

Oh my. No, I have a bluetooth dongle lying around, want to turn it into a standalone wireless audio receiver. I wanna know if that's even possible. :)

Bob
Would Electrical Engineering be suitable?

I don't think so
Its a bit vague and would basically require someone to do all the 'work'

Bob
True

10:34 AM
Did you simply try Googling it?

yeah.

Bob
> [is not about] consumer electronics such as media players, cell phones or smart phones, except when designing these products or modifying their electronics for other uses

but all I got is links to stores selling bluetooth dongles. :|

Bob
Might fit into the except, but depends on how much you already know...

hmm
their chat room is pretty empty
or could have talked there

10:36 AM
I know the moderator there, but he's not on right now

ok. any way I can throw him a message or a tweet maybe?

5 mins ago, by Bibhas
Oh my. No, I have a bluetooth dongle lying around, want to turn it into a standalone wireless audio receiver. I wanna know if that's even possible. :)
crap
@kortuk Is this something for you guys? ^^

that'll do. :)

You're welcome, its an interesting question, but I fear it wont be straight forward

I'm not expecting it to. Lets see.

10:40 AM
Well I mean it probably requires custom software that turns a dongle into a receiver and whatnot
what would be your use case? because if its plugged in a computer, you'd just need to find software
You could even try writing it yourself :P

Bob
Hm..
@IvoFlipse Perhaps plug it into a Raspberry Pi? :P

And then what?

Bob
Should be small enough... that sorts out the hardware side

Receiving means something is sending to do, what will be sending and what do you want to receiving end to do
I could imagine you'd want your computer to broadcast bluetooth so a wireless speaker or headset could pick it up

Bob
Then you have something like this
Which is fairly standard for Bluetooth headsets

10:43 AM
@IvoFlipse It receives the signal anyway, right? Just needs the power. If I could somehow direct that to an output audio port, maybe it could work as a wireless audio receiver..
I'm guessing I messed up the logic and jumped up few steps, but I'm curious. Just wanna know how it is different than a wireless audio receiver of the same size.

Bob
Meaning smartphones and similar are more likely to support it out of the box

@Bibhas So where do you want to plug it into? I fear a bluetooth dongle is very 'stupid' in that it doesn't do much unless somethings connected to its usb port

USB is just two power cable and two data cable.
This small thing can be plugged to any speaker or audio device and you can send dmusic from your phone to it

Bob
@IvoFlipse That's the thing, though. A Pi would provide a USB port, power and audio output (TRS). There's ways to get Linux to act as an A2DP receiver.

I hardly think it has a linux rom inside.
some hardware tricks maybe

Bob
10:46 AM
@Bibhas No, that's a dedicated device. You're talking about doing the same with a generic USB Bluetooth dongle, which would require... something different.

@Bob It would, but again I have no idea what he's going to do with it

Yes. that something different part is what I'm interested in

From what kind of device does he want to receive something and where does he plan on receiving

@IvoFlipse see that link. I want to build something similar with a bluetooth dongle I have. I wanna know if that's possible.

Bob
@IvoFlipse Well, from that link, probably anything with a standard (TRS, 3.5mm) audio output jack, probably fairly portable. But in the end, just buying a dedicated device is probably cheaper and easier.

10:49 AM
It'll need power, I know. say I get it power. then what?
I know its cheaper and easier
But I'm interested in knowing if it can be done

@Bibhas: you'd need something to handle the pairing, and negotiation (I suspect most modern bt modules are 'dumb' and leave that to the host device). You'd need to talk to the BT module and take the data stream from it, and convert it to some format your device can convert to audio

If you get something like Raspberrie Pi yes

Bob

@IvoFlipse That's the thing, though. A Pi would provide a USB port, power and audio output (TRS). There's ways to get Linux to act as an A2DP receiver.

Indeed, that's one of your few options
or an Arduino I guess

or a arm chip with a custom board, and effectively build a embedded device that does all this from scratch ;p
(or buy a raspberry pi ;p)

10:52 AM
but then again, those things already come with bluetooth, why plug it in :P

Bob
That complicates matters a lot more (building from scratch) :P

they don't
they come with ethernet (with model B) and USB

Don't they have wifi models too?

Bob
There's no guarantee you can get Bluetooth working on the Pi, though

10:53 AM
oh, might be fun to try
I have a 2 dollar DX bluetooth module around here some place ;p

Bob
There are a few forum threads where people have issues with certain chips

I have teh chance to order a Pi now. but am broke. :-/

Which leads me to wonder if if there's some way to hack in a pi-usable charging port into a regular desktop
@Bibhas: ordered mine. I need to do a LITTLE bit of monetary gymnastics tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek How much power do they draw?

10:55 AM
they require a 1A usb port
similar to a ipad charger

Bob
There's motherboards that come with special USB charging modes that might provide 1A

Bob
(despite it being twice the specified max)
And also USB 3.0 ports

oh? even with a usb2.0 cable?
thats worth a try when i get nyx up

Bob
Hmm
USB 3.0 specifies 900mA max
6 x 150mA units

10:56 AM
lol
A charger is only a few dollars.

Bob
And my motherboard came with an "iPhone charging driver"
been too scared to install it :S

I just have that typical geek problem of not enough power sockets.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I used to have a powerboard plugged into a powerboard plugged into a powerboard plugged into a splitter :P
Somehow, it didn't overload anything

lol
I should prolly replace my 4 way with an 8 way

Bob
o.O

10:59 AM
hm

Bob
My motherboard manual...

@JourneymanGeek I always travel with a power cord to I can charge all my devices :P

Bob
> While replacing the CPU, always turn off the ATX power supply
...

Desktop, monitor, laptop, fan. I have to unplug the fan when i need to charge my batteries.

@Bob What a sissy

11:00 AM
@Bob: You would be suprised.

Bob
Anyone who tries to replace the CPU while the system is powered on (single socket motherboard) should not be allowed to open the case...

I DID once plug in a VGA cable that was shooting sparks... ;p
@Bob: You underestimate human stupidity ;p

Bob
I do wonder why the heck anyone would need a "Clear CMOS" button on the back panel :\

lol
actually, why not?

Bob
It's also got a jumper inside

11:04 AM
If you OCed your system into instability, its probably going to make your life simpler.
just reach over the back and pop the button

Bob
At the same time, it clears the RAID settings (switching back to IDE)... which breaks things if I boot without noticing

morning

So, you can break things after you break things... without breaking things (when you open up the system?)

Easy for OCing - backup BIOS :D

Bob
:P
here it is
ooh
in the software manual o.O

11:07 AM
all your favourite settings are there nicely saved... then use the 'current' for your tweaking :)

Bob
"Super-Charger"
It claims to support the iPad, at 1.6A

oh dear...
that's half the ampage isn't it?
fairly sure they're rediculously high... Like other apple devices?

Bob
@HaydnWVN That's over three times the normal 500mA max for USB 2.0 ports
wtf
there's even a program for NIC load balancing o.O

sounds nice... new mobo? which board?

Bob
Not new, I've had this for a year
Just never bothered to use the software CD that came with it :P

11:11 AM
lol

Bob
MSI P67A-C45

I've been meaning to update mine at home... Currently an Asus P5Q

Bob
All kinds of crazy stuff..
They even include a basic Linux distro with Skype :S

really fancy some SATA2 and USB3 before i get a new SSD
oh nice, never been an MSI fan

Bob
SATA3*

11:12 AM
yeah that's what i ment ;)

Bob
heh
here's their promo video for this Linux distro
Personally, I think I'll stick with Knoppix...
@HaydnWVN I'm not sure I like MSI that much :P

I always used to love SOYO boards back in the day... Then Abit when OCing the early Athlons, but since switching to Intel i've always gone for Asus boards and will probably continue to do so
cost/features/stability they've always been perfect for me
i don't OC anywhere as much as i used to, but always like to tweak a little :D

96 messages? Really?
Y U NO TALK WHEN I'M HERE :|

/me whistles

lol

Bob
11:25 AM
Oh yea, what's with the burninate thing?
@Sathya Oh noes! Sathya's here! Everyone, scatter! :P

@Bob looks like they did :|

Bob
@Sathya o.O

Ask Ubuntu has about 24 answers with links to techyv.com, which we destroy with glee in here // @jokerdino

yep. just noticed. WTF?
how come no one noticed ??

@jokerdino slipped by I suppose. Happens here too
cleaned up/flagged
sorry mods :P

11:40 AM
i'll add it to the bigasoft.com url spam check

meta?

no, personal.

Bob
@Sathya Chance they'll be declined?
Just how obviously are the techyv answers spam?

@Bob /me shrugs. Up to them

@Bob some 20+ of them.

11:42 AM
@Bob <blargh blargh blargh> here's a link to check <link to the site> & the link's not related at all

Bob
@Sathya Oh, ok :P

plus remember that link-only posts are not considered to answers

How do you guys watch multiple SE sites? Multiple tabs? Are there aggregators?

open a new tab and watch \o/

Would be nice if there was a meta-frontpage with all the frontpages of certain sites combined
@jokerdino I'm running out of tab space :P

Bob
11:50 AM
@OliverSalzburg Firefox "App Tabs"
It turns blue when the page title changes, which works well here :P

@OliverSalzburg I don't; I watch only SU. Rest is when I'm free

@Bob They're pinned tabs in Chrome. I already use them :D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg And you're running out of space? O.O

Bob
wow

11:51 AM
Those are the ones I have pinned right now

Bob
Of course, if it were only the SE sites, that would work better :P

Which LGA775 processor would you go for as an upgrade to a Q6600, or is it worth going the full hog to i5?

@HaydnWVN BTW, I did read the question but I still thought the answer was relevant. And I didn't appreciate the tone of that comment :P

lol apologies, i must've been having a bad day :(

@HaydnWVN: given a choice, i'd just go for a core i5
@OliverSalzburg: I find RSS feeds of the main page work well

12:00 PM
@HaydnWVN Cool. Cheers :)

> Firstly, the interface is very clean. There is no clutter or complexity. I don’t have to deal with a dozen different Git features right of the bat. I get a command prompt that simply asks me “what do you want to do now?”. I type in

Bob
@Sathya ?

article starts off with the premise that user knows commands and hence GUI is complex :\

lol
CLI is simpler when you have no idea what your doing and nothing goes wrong
or you know exactly what you're doing.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Don't go rm -rf /
Or format /x C:
:P

12:14 PM
pfft. apt-get remove bzip2 | yes
;p
least if i remember the yes command correctly

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh yea, the newly discovered dangerous action :P

lol
actually its a lot more elegant that deleting the whole world.
ahh
FINALLY managed to answer a question today :)

Bob
@Sathya I have to agree with that first commenter, the Git for Windows GUI is horrible

@Bob +1
@JourneymanGeek exactly.

Bob
It took me half an hour to figure out how to unstage something

12:16 PM
but that dosen't mean ALL guis are horrible

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hence why I use Git Extensions, it's actually fairly intuitive
:P

BUT a well designed GUI is good for someone who knows just enough to be dangerous to himself
(or some tasks. though with them, they don't go CLI enough ;p)

Bob
At least I didn't accidentally break anything else, which is a first when experimenting with VCS for me...

pfft
NEVER trust anything that works right the first time
3

Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's still going fine a month in! :D

12:28 PM
off to home, cya later

That just means failures will be more catastrophic ;p

Man, what a day
This whole week, I've been trying to get some domains migrated to a new NS
And the registrar is playing stupid with me.
Their stupid web interface is spitting out errors which make no sense, so I ask support about them. They tell me to read the docs of my DNS server...
And after several back-and-forth emails, they tell me to "just use their NS".

Bob
Hmm... should superuser.com/questions/445247/… be migrated to Ask Different?
Wait, no iTunes?
Ok, it probably should :P

Bob
12:55 PM
lol

wow.
i can't even tell what connector that used to be ;p
