12:00 AM
lol
there's a SU blog post on bypassing passwords ;p

SHHH!
Don't give them ideas
:P

Oh. My 2000th vote was a downvote :(

@Luke @iglvzx I posted about a problem of a cousin of mine that was going on in another chat room (one of those automatically generated comment chatrooms) and it was solved before you guys got on
sorry for the confusion :)

I liked when he called you an admin :)

12:03 AM
@iglvzx: OTOH, I feel if any of my hypothetical future kids learn to get around my security, they have earned themselves the right to freedom of the system ;p

@OliverSalzburg lol I thought that was a little bit amusing :P

I got scared for a second...

@OliverSalzburg what do you mean?

(then i get a physical lock and leave lockpicing tools around)

@studiohack Maybe there are unknown powers ;)

12:03 AM
I am an admin, in a simple way, but not top admin, like dev :P

@studiohack Still like knowing :P Lol
Anyways, done work

@Luke no worries - I would ask myself :P cheers!

12:31 AM
And I'm back... Lol

Humm. 2:40am. Time to solve a case! :D

1:02 AM
@OliverSalzburg Was just gonna ask where you were, then I remembered you're in Germany. It's 18:00 here

@Luke :D
Trying to get to the source of this:

A: Why does Cacti keep waiting for dead poller processes?

Oliver SalzburgI did investigate a bit further and realized the closing of the connection to the database is intentional. The connection should be reestablished for the next polling run. But it isn't. Here's an excerpt from poller.php: if ($poller_runs_completed < $poller_runs) { db_close(); // Deb...

Aww, my answer was accepted and then mysteriously un-accepted.

A: How do you customize the icon on a USB stick?

iglvzxYes. You can customize the icon and label as shown by Windows Explorer by editing (or creating) the Autorun.inf file in the root folder of the removable drive. The path for the icon is relative: [Autorun] Icon=my_icon.ico Label=My Drive See also: MSDN: Autorun.inf Entries

1:17 AM
And it's fixed! Bam :D
I just earned myself a beer :)

Windows 3.1 installs VERY quick on an Asus Tablet running DOSBox... Lol

@Luke Exciting

I am debugging like a pro!

Nice

1:57 AM
Good work tune :)

5 hours later…
6:38 AM
knock, knock, anybody home?

ET Phone Home.

haha
@studiohack wait, have they still not enabled the special extra moderator abilities for you? You're supposed to get them after one year of being a mod... it has all the fun tools like [redacted] and [redacted].

Hmm.
Getting to 1k on SU is gonna take forever.
Especially if I downvote more answers. :/

6:56 AM
downvotes are worth it

well yes. Those answers do deserve the downvotes.

whoa ...
@jokerdino: yes and no
Don't forget you get rep back for deletes ;p

@JourneymanGeek keyboard mafia ~

lol
thats not a clacky

@JourneymanGeek hmm that's right

7:02 AM
and its bloody sweet

man, i so miss the inline editing that i am used to in Ask Ubuntu.

7:18 AM
@jokerdino join the club

hehe now I know how tough it is for you to review in AU :P

2 hours later…
9:31 AM
@jokerdino It's easier than you think if you catch the right couple of questions... Users who post a question and reward comments and engage with your answers are the best for points :)

it would be easy if SU was my primary site :-)

Very true... I find it hard to find the time as i'm working 99% the time i'm here

ah yeah that too.

a few mins here and there tends to place me in chat and the odd comment - very few answers lol :)

heh :p

9:35 AM
but gimmie a quiet week and i tend to haul in ~500 points at least :D

that's quite a bit of rep @.@

those weeks are few and far between lol
there are those who frequent here who hit the rep cap nearly every day :'(

i have hit the rep cap a grand total of 4 times
and that was on AU

Q: Should Mac and OS X questions be moved to "Ask Different"?

Roger MI see a lot of questions which relate to Mac, especially OS X, here on SU. I am aware that it's not against the rules of the site to ask Mac related questions, but we do have a site called "Ask Different", which is labeled: "Q&A for power users of Apple hardware and software". Should all Mac...

(cc @slhck / @OliverSalzburg)

why apple to ask different? why not to ask apple? lol

9:44 AM
and then you will be litigated ;p

@Sathya Humm?

@OliverSalzburg you asked a similar question :P

10:05 AM
Have a website that some Win7 PC's within the company can view, yet others can't (it times out)... All on latest versions of IE 9, same network/internet connection... First thoughts/suggestions?

10:17 AM
@HaydnWVN Divide & conquer
Is it IP connectivity? Is it DNS related? Is it an HTTP issue? Weird proxy settings?

None of the above... Something weird with IE9, Chrome and Firefox work fine, compatibility mode in IE9 works fine also...

@HaydnWVN So it's rendering/JS related?

Looks more DNS, but no errors or anything to troubleshoot, just the symptoms
if that doesn't open in IE for you, but does in Chrome/FF then you have the same symtoms as me to work with lol

10:49 AM
hm
I know someone asked a similar issue some time back

revise what i said... it DOESN'T open in IE9 compatiblity mode, FF or Chrome
yet doesn't time out... No errors in event log etc etc
not using a proxy, same gateway and DNS server on all PC's
no content filtering in place, no restrictions of any kind on IP's or outgoing traffic
all using the same local firewalls (Kaspersky WP4) and external facing hardware firewall

@HaydnWVN traceroute it?

@HaydnWVN If anything is not working inside a browser, I usually go deeper to have a closer look at what's going on.
Like, what if you telnet to the server on port 80?
Does it connect? If so, can you GET something? Is data even being transmitted?

yes, traceroute's fine, responds to pings from any PC, DNS is all to the same destination IP from all PC's

Bob
What does a debugging proxy (e.g. Fiddler) say?

11:00 AM
telnet connects fine from any PC on port 80
not looked at that yet Bob, but if it works on 1 PC and not another... Exactly the same systems, no configuration difference
i'm completely stumpted
there's no errors, nothing to troubleshoot with... It doesn't even time out!

11:19 AM
So, via telnet, site is received fine. In browser, it loads forever?

seemingly, although i'm not convinced and data is recieved
and/any
but it doesn't fault/error or timeout

11:35 AM
Wireshark it up!

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Fiddler may be easier for something HTTP specific :\

@Bob Possibly. But I hardly ever use it, so it would feel weird to recommend it :P

Bob
:P

11:48 AM
@OliverSalzburg the amount of oddities i usually come across when wiresharkin' i'm exploring other options first ;)
last time i used wireshark i spent days resolving a database replication problem i found lol

lol :D

can't even think what i was originally trying to fix... knowing me i never got around to it as it was probably fairly localised/low priority lol

Q: Questions that refer to using or installing ripped/pirated software

fossfreedomI note in the comments to this Question, that the user is using ripped software. umm, I just copied the folder of the game to my home folder.. thats it.. should I download the installation and install it? because I have ripped version of GTA that has no installations but files to extract ...

looks like my flag caused a meta discussion ;p
where is @jokerdino?

Right here.

ninja mode eh

so that flag got approved apparently.

still under review @jokerdino

Hmm considering that we don't see any opposition, it should hopefully be approved.

12:05 PM
yep.
off to home.
AND 2 WEEK VACATION. WOOHOO!

cya later

</caps>

yay awesome!
going home?

I'll still be in here though
yep
leaving monday night

yay, have fun.

12:06 PM
thank ye!
ciao for now

cya

Bob
@Sathya What annoys me is the top voted answer brings F/OSS vs. commercial in...

@Bob got annoyed by that too, navigated away from there

the last paragraph was off topic but overall i am okay with the answer

OSS only costs nothing if your time is worthless :P
But I'm not suicidal enough to post that on AU

12:09 PM
:p

I find it weird that people usually compare the quality of the software itself to the price of it. I put much higher value into support than the software itself.
Like, it can crash every other hour, as long as you're going to fix it ;D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg Within a certain (small) amount of time, of course!
I don't particularly fancy using software that crashes every hour, waiting several years for a fix :P

@Bob It that example, it shouldn't take longer than 2 hours to fix. So it's ready for the next crash! ;)

It is my SU one year birthday
Is there going to be cake?

let me look for a ASCII cake.

@Paul Congrats! :D
@Diogo Why is the difference between storage and memory so hard to understand for a lot of people? :D

@OliverSalzburg :D

12:40 PM
@Paul Many happy returns >insert party popper noise here<

@Paul I gifted you some upvotes :D

i don't see any.

@Paul Happy Bday :)

Humm, I just noticed the vote counts in my profile don't match

the rest are downvotes?

12:51 PM
@HaydnWVN One counter says 2009, the other 1996

year 2000 bug? ;)

would it be something like the vote cast count is done by different calculations in each page

or they get updated at/by different scripts

one may count all votes that awarded rep, the other doesn't include counts where you hit the rep cap?

1:06 PM
lol, i just did 3 weeks worth of workshops in ~2 hours in class ;)

@all thanks everyone

1:23 PM
@HaydnWVN Interesting

1:38 PM
If i helped you, can you help me? ;)

Q: Troubleshooting Website problems within the local network

HaydnWVNHave an external website which opens fine on some PC's, yet seems to time out (or symptoms of timing out, but never actually does) on others. Seems to only affect (some) of our newer HP Pro 3305 MT Workstations. All of which are running Win7 32bit SP1 with all updates. Older PC's (Win7 32bit SP1...

@HaydnWVN Have you eliminated a local layer 1 problem, by swapping the network connection from a working pc to a non working pc? Also, I'd have wireshark out about now.

part of the problem with wireshark is i don't know what i'm looking for lol
i'm checking MTU sizes now
@Paul and yes switched cables/connections, even switches

2:49 PM
> He then took out the ethernet cable, tried to plug it into his 56k modem, when it didn't fit he took a knife and carved it down to make it fit.

lolololl
Everyone's browsing reddit :D

Haha
Reminds me of the opposite situation. But that was my brother's fault. I had a dangling phone cable under my desk since the phone it was hooked to got busted. My router was sitting there too. My little brother came in, saw the cable and the router, and figured it'd be a good idea to plug the phone cable directly into an ethernet port. When I got home, I found phone service to be dead

3:04 PM
lol
i've been actively avoiding reddit

Spent some time on the cell with a Verizon rep, running through all the troubleshooting steps and eventually found it. Apparently if you have your phone jack plugged into a LAN port on a router, it kills your phone. :P

too many addictive things in my life ;p

@JourneymanGeek that was your 2544th lol.
hmm someone cleaned up the database i think.

Oh, the fixed searching lol by user?

i thought your count ran past 20k.

3:11 PM
@sidran32 You work at ATI ? That's awesome
and you are a little older than I expected you to be

@HackToHell I did. Got laid off. But ya. :P

age is but a number! i'll always act my shoe size ;)

@sidran32 So you work at nVidia now ?
:D

@HackToHell No, small company. Test Evolution. :P
We did have "defectors" though :P

Was ATI awesome ?

3:19 PM
It was fun. Moved with them into AMD, too. It was good but I started getting burned out. I like my new job. :)
They had great benefits. :) It also gave me an awesome baseline pay getting out of college. I now can negotiate a good salary :P

Ah, they picked you from college, that's great :)

@HaydnWVN: so do i. 12ee ;p

i'm UK size 8 ;)

I have giant hairy feet ;p

that is disturbing.
but i still star it :P

Bob
3:34 PM
@OliverSalzburg One shows votes on deleted posts, the other doesn't...
I vaguely remember a meta question about it at some point

@Bob Ah. Thanks

Bob
This is close:

@JourneymanGeek me too 12ee excluding hairs :P :P

A: "Votes cast" should include votes on deleted contributions

Nick CraverStarting with the next build, votes on deleted posts will be included in the profile counts. This will also apply to the various voting badges to match: Civic Duty, Electorate, Suffrage, Vox Populi. Also, the badge progress on review should remain accurate. Downvoting bad content (which usuall...

@HaydnWVN Have you sorted out your page loading issue?

nope
its not MTU, DNS or anything like that

Bob
3:38 PM
You're getting part of the page?

its something to do with the page content loading
part of the page loads, get the title and background colour

Bob
Have you tried Fiddler yet? :P

but no more, view the source on a working PC and a broken one and it's exactly the same
www.rhs.org.uk

Bob
Compare what you get with a working computer, you should see which request it gets stuck at (in Fiddler)
That will at least narrow things down a bit...

not fiddler yet, done wireshark and can't see any difference between the 2 PC's requests
but the odd thing... see my comments

opening the page via a web proxy, it works, viewing the google cached copy, it works, opening an image from the website, works, opening a page, doesn't!

Bob
3:41 PM
If you're only getting part of the page, with a "waiting for response from...", then there's definitely a request or similar that's not getting a reply...
(and not timing out for whatever reason)

yeah but why would the request be different between 2 PC's with almost exactly the same hardware, exactly the same OS and updates, using the same connection...
it's got me confused, i'm used to it but not for a whole afternoon lol

Bob
@HaydnWVN Well, if you can figure out which request it is...

How long has it been since 7 has been installed on both ?

true... link to Fiddler?
@HackToHell erm, both have been at least 4 months+

3:44 PM
no problems at all with anything else, or any other websites that i can find

@HackToHell much documentation, or will i pick it up easily enough? :)

Bob
Which site was it again?

@HaydnWVN Easy as hell ;)

Bob
@HaydnWVN It's easy enough
Especially from IE

3:45 PM
okies, back in a bit after i try it on the suspect pc :)

Bob
Hm

3:57 PM
ok... the session that opens doesn't get a response?

@JourneymanGeek I have moderate sized, yet still hairy, feet. In fact, my feet often get irritated because socks tend to pull the hair on my feet a lot. D:

Bob
@HaydnWVN You mean there's no response to the first request?

it's there as a session in fiddler, but there's nothing else
my machine here (working) sends the initial then gets a ton of others
(ie replies)

Bob
Then if you cleared the cache, you probably wouldn't even get partial page load

3:59 PM
the 'broken' PC's don't get a response/further data?

Bob
Try that (click the clear cache button on the toolbar)
It's probably only partially loading the page due to something left in the cache
Also remove all sessions (click the X on the toolbar)

ok brb
clearning and retrying... nothing

5 hours ago, by HaydnWVN
telnet connects fine from any PC on port 80
you sure about that?

4:08 PM
hmmm did it from a different PC than the one i'm currently on (used PuTTy)

Bob
@HaydnWVN Hm.. Did a GET request work from there? (probably not)
:\ I can't even get PuTTY to connect

thanks for the help @Bob, i'm gonna get back on this next week where i'll have more time

Bob
@HaydnWVN Ah, k. Good luck!

might try a different (external) DNS server
but can't see why it would make a difference - DNS is working and resolving
next stage is probably understanding the HTTP GET request and why its not being fulfilled? :>

@HaydnWVN Try swapping LAN cables or changing IP addresses to see if it is a router problem ..

4:18 PM
will, next week ;)
a nice job for a monday lol ;)
cya all, have a good weekend

So at work they're offering to let me buy a few random peripherals for my machine, in the $50-80 range. Not really sure what to get though. Any suggestions for some random fun hardware around that price range?
I can use it for personal use, they're just buying stuff for some employees to be nice I guess.

Bob
@nhinkle That's just above the cheap fun stuff and just below the expensive fun stuff :P
@HaydnWVN cya

@Bob if it were slightly more or slightly less I could probably convince them

It would look cool :P
Or a raspberry pi

Bob
@HackToHell Virtually indestructible? Probably never met a sledgehammer...

4:31 PM
It's silicone, so it's kinda indestructible :P

Bob
Smash it hard enough and something's gonna give :P
Silicone isn't all that hard to cut, actually

4:43 PM
@HackToHell I would prefer a physically indestructible one :D

@OliverSalzburg An adamantium keyboard is really cheap these days, get one :P

Bob
@HackToHell How about one of those unobtanium ones?

And silicone reminds me of Christina Aguilera :P
@Bob it's a little radioactive, my cat will not like it

Bob
@HackToHell Huh?

fake stuff you know ...
It's a standing joke in my school :P
Since y'all happen to be older than me, it prolly not funny :/

4:53 PM
How old are you?

@nhinkle His avatar is in his 40's :P

I'm guessing that's not him... his profile says 17
Hurray - Studiohack and I aren't the youngest young 'uns anymore!

That's Leonardo di caprio fyi
I am not the youngest, AmitKK is, he's 13 :P

I know, there's other young ones
@simonsheehan is about your age, although it's been a while since I last saw him

I feel old now :(

4:56 PM
How old are you, 19 or 20 ?
@nhinkle Yeah, i have seen him

24

old boo :P

Bob
o.O

@HackToHell something like that

Many guys are around that age,maybe not

4:58 PM
I thought people under 25 was rare on these sites... I feel a little better now

I'd say age range is probably around 20-35 avg
18-25 is the biggest age range
followed by 26-34
and half of y'all have kids apparently

How do you know all these things? Never heard of Quantcast, but I'm a little privacy concerned now

Well it's all estimates. Stack Exchange, Inc voluntarily sends extra data to quantcast I think

But I never told THAT much about me...

actually I think that's incorrect. they somehow just infer
i have no idea how it works
they just guess

Bob
5:03 PM
lol

i don't think it's actually based off of user profile info, they figure it out through some scary black magic

Like Google?

Bob
@nhinkle AKA rand()

shrug

5:04 PM
Hmm, there was an query that showed age of users in Stack Data explorer, now I can't find it

ok so keyboards and raspberry bi were suggested... what else
@Luke huh. Google thinks I'm older than I really am
probably a good thing, otherwise I'd be getting ads for justin bieber and crap

It though I was 35 before
For the Justin Beiber fans :P

Bob
@Luke I almost clicked on that!

JB is the most trolled guy on the planet

@nhinkle They're doing the same everybody does, track you :P
Sadly, you can no longer see what Google determined about you. But it was quite interesting: dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2092583/…

5:08 PM
ga.js is the most common js on the planet !!

www.google.com/ads/preferences no longer shows the current profile as it seems

I can track every move you make on my blog with GA
It's insanely powerful

@Bob It's a good video... trust me

Bob
@Luke I was kidding :P
But now is not a time for me to watch videos anyway

OK

5:10 PM
Now a good video

I'll have to watch that one later... I'm at work too

:(
Yay for GEMA :P

That sucks

Just the sound track alone
@TomWijsman You will love it

5:17 PM
@HackToHell emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy "spotify".

Umm, watever that is, is your problem :P

@HackToHell Meh

I really don't get why spotify is pushing Facebook.
So many people told them it's a stupid move.

That's why i use it from a fake account

5:19 PM
As if it was such a big deal to allow different login mechanisms. They should take SE as an example :D

And technically spotify is not available for my country too
Dumb music rights system

Hmm...

6:28 PM
I'm alive!
@studiohack you around? Saw you ping me a few days ago :p

I've had to manually clean out the Windows registry on XP once when iTunes blew up. I also had to manually clean out a PC infected with multiple trojans and IE hijacks, a broken Office install (if it ever was...) and remnants of 2 different AV software package installations (McAfee and Norton). It took me 2 days to get it in a workable state.
These sessions always accompany small lectures on best practice while using the computer :P

Oh dear

I never ask for money though. I'm nice like that. :P They still always insist on paying me though.
