@JourneymanGeek personal experience tells me that the louder (more clicky) the keyboard, the nicer it is to type on :P

lol
I totally agree
your co-workers may not

@Luke: can't have them interweb viruses attacking our teevees and wimmen can we?

@JourneymanGeek Someone came in here asking about anti virus cables, because Futureshop (Canadian version of BestBuy) was selling the cables!

>_>
I don't know what suprises me more...
than they still had 386 support or that they dropped it

Q: How to detect a USB Rubber Ducky?

Magnetic_dudThree weeks ago my company ordered a lot of hardware (real hardware, not IT-related) from China. Today, the warehouse girl comes to my office and says that, mixed in the stuff, she found a white USB drive saying "Lihuiyu Studio Labs 2012.10.25" Curious, I had a reaction like "YAY! A free USB ...

perfect social engineering ;p

2:39 AM
I am glad they dropped it. Now if they also would drop ancient 32 bit mode, :)

3:03 AM
lol
there's still SOME use for 32 bit x86 ... for now
there's some embedded x86 systems

so i have this friend that works in the HR of a larger company. he told me what he does when he gets like 200 resumes he basically just throws away 100 of them to the gutter and tells himself: "we don't need people that aren't lucky".
@HackToHell Mark Henderson
over in Comms:

Windows 7 is pissing me off. Specifically, the setup.

@Sathya how so?

Q: Why is windows not able to create a system partition?

hughesI'm reinstalling Windows 7 64 bit, and I encountered an issue I've never seen before. I have a legit copy of Win 64 Professional, and I've installed it probably a half dozen times on this machine in the past without a problem. Googling the error only brings me to issues with people who are upgra...

I can't install Windows 7 because it refuses to go ahead with the partition selection
the same fucking error

Hmm... Same drive @Sathya?

drove me nuts. Wiped my entire hard disk and still nada
it's a 500Gig WD

4:09 AM
@Sathya did you try using GParted (on Linux) or EASEUS Partition Manager (on Windows) to create a GPT partition table and create an NTFS partition?
....wait. 500 GB? the size there says 1397 gigs!

@allquixotic that's not my screenshot, it's from the linked question
the same error

@allquixotic I don't have access to another Windows system - used disk part to remove, clean & create new partitions

things to try: switch up IDE/RAID/AHCI mode on the SATA controller; switch up MBR/GPT partition table type; check for SMART errors; manually create an NTFS partition
@Sathya if you have access to any system or can even boot up a Linux live CD, you can do whatever you need

that'll have to wait another 10 hours, just reached work.

4:12 AM
@allquixotic I don't think IDE/RAID/AHCI would be the issue

@allquixotic yeah, back to creating USB boot drive from Cr48.

I've had that issue before, but ever since I started booting off of AHCI and booting the Windows installation CD under UEFI and formatting my partition table as GPT, I've never hit any of that
I'm basically using the next-gen storage-and-boot stack: AHCI, UEFI, GPT

Interesting. I've never had an issue with it

I used to get problems like that regularly with SATA in IDE mode + BIOS + MBR (old storage-and-boot stack)

I have AHCI enabled, no GPT or UEFI. I've installed Windows on the same system, previously. I have no fucking clue why this is being such a bitch now
yes, I'm frustrated so please excuse the swear words

4:16 AM
lol

is it a Win7 SP1 CD or Win7 OEM?

neither, Win 7 from MSFT digital store

probably SP1 then.

it was downloaded long before SP1, so I don't think so. Distinctly remember having to install SP1 post install

oh. well, they definitely fixed lots of bugs in SP1
also some of the answers to that Q you linked above are insightful, particularly the accepted answer

4:21 AM
the only reason I'm installing Win 7 is because the Win 8 I have is the upgrade one and don't want win 8 activation to screwup because I didn't have win 7 installed

actually, you can install Win 8 Upgrade "clean", there is a way to do it
I did it here and was able to (legally) activate my install without installing Win7

@allquixotic the DVD thing is the only step I'm yet to try
@allquixotic how so, I'm all ears

I followed the instructions under "Activate Windows 8 Pro Upgrade" and it worked flawlessly; I've been running Win8 Pro "Upgrade" (clean installed) since the day after general availability of Windows 8, and it still says my copy is genuine after installing tons of updates etc

@allquixotic great, thanks. I'll try that in the evening

my understanding is that Microsoft only really cares that, during purchase of your copy of Windows 8 Upgrade, you had a valid Windows 7-or-earlier license key... they only care about the fact that you had a license key, that was yours and valid, WHEN YOU BOUGHT the upgrade
what you do after that is inconsequential to Microsoft. the reason that you have to do a registry edit to make it work is a technicality
I think they're expecting that 99% of the people who purchase the Win 8 Pro Upgrade are going to literally upgrade an install of a prior version of Windows
but for those of us who want to install clean, the license doesn't prohibit it -- it's just that their GUI tools don't make it easy
the only deviation from those instructions that I had to do is in the very last step
> Run the activation utility afterwards, enter your product key to activate Windows.
once I rebooted, I didn't even have to do this step at all; my license immediately said activated/genuine
I don't consider this a "hack" at all because you aren't running any hack code, you're just editing a built-in registry key and running a built-in command line tool
hope all that made sense

4:34 AM
yeah, it did
thanks - let's just hope it goes fine
will be travelling tomorrow night and won't be close to my system for the next few days

in any case, installing Windows 8 should be much smoother than installing Windows 7, given that it has updated drivers and fixed bugs in the installer paths, so once you get Win8 clean installed, the task of activating is a little less pressing because you have a few days to figure it out
and it's essentially just changing one registry value and running one command as administrator

@allquixotic yeah, let's hope so - just worrying about the partitioning bit - I've read that the double-install method works fine too.
brb late breakfast.

brb ~8 hours, sleep :P

5:04 AM
@allquixotic :P

hmm
I just realised something. I upgraded my windows 8 pro to the version with media center
and I have no clue what that actually adds ;p

@JourneymanGeek it adds Media Center :P

I got a free Media centre key too :P
there's a promo going on

I mean does it add more codecs? new software?

5:07 AM
post jan it'll be charged

ditto
for some wierd reason
actually.. I sorta got it twice, since the first time they sent me a link it was in hebrew

@JourneymanGeek Whatsp?

@FasihKhatib: beats me, I don't read hebrew, nor is there any reason MS should assume I do ;p

ahahaha
dude do you own a laptop?

has your laptop charger ever made slight beeing noises?

5:42 AM
bee bee bee ish?
not my laptop charger, but one of my battery chargers does

yeah. what could be the cause?

hmm
no idea

Well, my laptop charger does that but it works fine.

seemed harmless in my case

A lot of people on the internet say -awh my charger started beeping and then it just won;t work at all-
but mine works
it is a very very low noise. I have to put my ear to it to listen
posted on electronics.stackexchange
@JourneymanGeek so how long hs your charger been making that sound?

5:49 AM
lol
years

and still no issues?

maybe it is the transformer inside
causing the noise

or the SMPS
cause transformers are less common than they used to be

yeah the SMPS has a transformer inside right?

5:51 AM
nope
the SMPS does the same thing a transformer + rectifier does
but entirely electronically

ok.....
Ok so here's the scenario.....
I was playing Battlefield online while the laptop was on AC. This caused the graphics card to be pushed to the max
I didn;t play for like 10 hours straight, one maybe

@JourneymanGeek yes, it adds codecs & Windows Media center

its probably not that ;p

Thats when later I observed this noise

@Sathya: so very little I'd find useful, other than that its free? ;p

5:54 AM
yeah I thought just that cause the charger was provided keeping all this in mind

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, but hey more free stuff is always welcome :p

XD
naturally

Would you like to check the internal voltages flowing the computer to see if everything is fine?

er.. jow?
how even?

I dunno... there must be a software

6:08 AM
generally not really, if you're assuming something is actually borked ;p

hmm...
@JourneymanGeek So a researcher on the electronics site said that it is because of the transformer inside

assuming it has one
SMPSes don't, trust me ;p

so how do you convert 110V or 220V to say maybe 50V it needs?

switch mode power supplies 'chop' up the input supply to have the same effect

he said 'if the sound is similar to the one old tubelights make, it is fine but if it si like a high pitched whistle, trouble'

6:23 AM
I read that as "if the sound is similar to the one old tubgirls make"
Do NOT look up tubgirl
I really mean it
I really really really really mean it

I said tube light

I misread it ;p

florescent light

I know what you meant ;p

is the sign mirror images too?

@JourneymanGeek huh? camera flips the right way round if thats what you mean

ahh
I mean, you're taking a photo in a mirror and the words arn't flipped ;p
stole my logitech G300 off the shared box ;p
need to see if I can find another one, I LOVE that mouse

@JourneymanGeek yeah, Iphone flips the image after taking it... preview is wrong way round

ahh
ok ;p
it would be REALLY creepy if they had that sign in mirror image so you could see it in the mirror ;p

12:01 PM
Ok crap, need a quick advice here
I have an external HDD, and I happened to touch it so that the DC connector would move
The enclosure made a beeping sound and now won't turn on again :/
HALP

12:16 PM
@slhck If you have a multimeter, check the power adapter is still providing power. It may have shutdown automatically if it detected a short
If that's the case, it will usually reset itself if unplugged for a while

@GrahamWager Don't have a multimeter but for some reason it works again now.
Could very well have been an automatic shutdown
I'll put that darn thing in a wall safe from now on :/

Yeah, sounds like it was a polyfuse either in the adapter itself or in the enclosure

Heh. Was already looking for some burned circuits…

@JacobJanTuinstra Personally, though you may well (understandably!) feel a bit cheated I'd 'cut Sathya some slack' because (i) his answer was first (if not quite complete others are encouraged to enhance answers rather than adjust and repost as their own), (ii) it is elegant (1 function v your 6), (iii) Sathya is a very hard working moderator, (iv) how he manages to contribute as much as he does beats me and (v) he is brilliantly knowledgeable - so a 'pointer' from him will often be more valuable than a comprehensive answer from another. So even if you were 'robbed' it was in a good cause! — pnuts 8 mins ago
amused, honoured by this
honestly the only reason I had placed that 'answer' was it was meant more like a pointer to what needed to be done
didn't expect @jacob / anyone else to post an answer, much less for the OP to come back & accept it
thought it'd be like one of those hit-n-run users

@Sathya nice one

@JourneymanGeek Well, you can check things like CPU and RAM voltage, and maybe even the measured voltage supplied to the motherboard.
@JourneymanGeek whoops... on the plus side, I wouldn't call it the worst of the shock sites.

oh, ok... I just continued the pattern too, infinity times, by entering a chat line with 0 letters
look, I just did it again!
no idea why someone stickied my comment about win8 upgrade activation

I did it here and was able to (legally) activate my install without installing Win7

it took me that long to enter a message without text :\
oh come on, now it disappears

yay
that worked

Q: Profile pages "lose" their proper HTML title

ʞɔɥlsThe user profile pages used to have a proper HTML title like: User slhck - Super User However, since a couple of weeks (?), this title has changed to: superuser.com/users/48078/slhck Not very elegant I'd say. For some reason the actual title does appear for a split second, but then it...

Preferably on Chrome stable?
(Only have Dev here and can't downgrade)

Bob
every time I take a screenshot, I'm reminded I need to get off my arse and get my upload program working :P
@slhck your inverted username isn't helping :\
looks fine on SU too

@Bob Weird. But thanks for checking!

@slhck Works for me on Chrome/Win7
Erm...
Something is weird ;P

2:10 PM
@OliverSalzburg Huh.

Yep, there's something

And that just tells me you saw the same question and debated on whether you should close it right away :P

try{b.getElementsByTagName("title")[0].innerHTML=f.replace("<","&lt;").replace(">","&gt;").replace(" & "," &amp; ")}catch(g){}
Love Chrome! :D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg <title>User slhck - Super User</title>

2:12 PM
@OliverSalzburg Is that the culprit? I think there are quite a few lines that modify the HTML as well.

@slhck There where Chrome stopped for me

Bob
ok, now I'm confused

@slhck Seems like it's the only breakpoint that's hit... checking more

Yup, only breakpoint hitting it.
But for me the page source stays intact.
It's only the document.title that's changed.

Bob
ah.. well, I'm an idiot
view source comes up normal, but that's hardly the current rendered page

2:14 PM
@Bob Yeah, need to use Inspect

Bob
interestingly, Firebug shows the title tag there, with the correct contents, while Chrome's tools don't
Chrome specific bug? o.O

Quite obviously, yeah

Bob
@slhck the title still comes up correctly in the tab bar for me

Bob
@slhck could be valid if answers can reference studies done.. it's not necessarily asking for an opinion?

2:19 PM
@Bob True. Let's see what answers we'll get.

I'm wondering what's the context here
is he considering SSDs for long term storage?>

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Now I'm wondering about the context of your remark! :P
oh.

Q: How long can you read files from a flash drive if kept in a cool, dark room?

darkAsPitchSay you had some sensitive information that you didn't want to store on the internet, was incredibly important to you, and you didn't need to access very often either. Think of a digital picture taken of your grandma days before her death or something... Very important stuff. So you load the fi...

Bob
@JourneymanGeek could be; dye CDs are pretty notorious for losing data over time

@OliverSalzburg These are about hard drives, not SSD; but the other, could possibly be a dupe
@OliverSalzburg The last one's about life expectancy rgd. writes, not just sitting around :)

2:22 PM
@slhck I say we merge them all into one! :D
Ok well, I'm off to get some work done ;D

@OliverSalzburg Merged the first two

I can't shake the feeling of deja vu on this one ;P

Heh.
But you're right, I'll also be back to work again

any media that is easily influenced by magnetic fields isn't "long term storage" imo

@allquixotic: tapes? ;p

2:34 PM
When will the tshirts be shipped ? After new year ?

Bob
@allquixotic dye-based writable optical media degrades over time and is often affected by (UV?) light. also not great long term :P

@Bob so what's great long term? engravings in stainless steel?

Bob
@allquixotic nah, that still rusts... wait, does it? idk
hm
stone carvings tend to last for a while
parchment is pretty good for a couple of centuries, assuming the ink lasts

lol
stone tablets!

o0 github raw goes down
and SU dark theme goes rotten :/

2:45 PM
New GitHub status page...
@HackToHell ...says everything's fine

@HackToHell Do you mean the Win8Challenge t-shirts?

@GrahamWager yep

In that case, I can quote from an e-mail from Brett I got last night:
"I know the shirts were shipped out earlier this week"

@OliverSalzburg It's working now :)
@GrahamWager nice :)

which was alongside:
"It looks like your order was mistakenly marked as purchased! We've ordered your items, for sure this time, and they are on the way."
which explains why I hadn't heard a peep from any couriers! :)

2:59 PM
Looks gloomily at @GrahamWager <_<
What did you post @Bob ?

Bob
@HackToHell accident
I had copied something else, but that's lost now :\

sad

@HackToHell some crazy cop shooting backwards or something :P

lol

Bob
oh, you were asking what, not why
whoops
here it is:

3:07 PM
Family guy ?

@Bob stainless steel doesn't rust, in general, but it depends on the percentage of the alloy that is Chromium (the element) -- the more Chromium, the softer the alloy, but the more resistant it is to corrosion. On the low end (11% Chromium), it'll rust if it's underwater for a long time. On the high end (25% Chromium), it can withstand water, humid air, some acids, etc. for a long time.
The chromium forms a protective layer around the steel in a process called passivation

Bob
@allquixotic bleh. just use aluminium or something :P

3:30 PM
@allquixotic ...you can never have enough Chromium ;D
2

3:41 PM
@OliverSalzburg OF COURSE that would come from you.

3:58 PM
Aluminium is quite reactive. If anything dissolves the protecting aluminiumoxide layer it will 'rust' quite fast.
