6:00 PM
@avirk Okay, just trying to figure out what to use for tags…

@FasihKhatib yes!
@slhck hmmm.

@avirk so where Do i install DIXML? Which drive would be right?

@FasihKhatib Its depend on which drive suits to you.

@JaredTritsch help would be appreciated

But if its a Windows backup then I'm sure it should be on C: drive.

6:04 PM
It is Win7 32bit I am using

@FasihKhatib Windows & installation backup of C: drive right?

yeah try doing what Avirk says, but it sounds like your servo arm is defective. id just RMA it

oh boy!

i had one like that before and that ended up being the problem.

Would you weigh in MAINS AC Power as the problem?

6:05 PM
hang on. reviewing chat log.
nah, your power is probably fine.

cause I have a lot of Voltage fluctuations here. and My laptop has a dead battery so this is as good as a desktop

that braking is because the platters are detecting that the head is too close, so it stops the drive to prevent contact.

ohhhhh

the head is probably aligned enough for I/O, but not enough to keep the drive happy.
easy RMA. its a known defect possibility.
suprisingly, HDDs are still assembled largely by hand.
every once in a while a bad arm will slip through QA

My CD-Drive isnt proper wither so It doesn;t read CDs
so is there any other option than that?
BART-PE CD won;t work so maybe make it bootable USB?

6:09 PM
you can try a format to clear up the damage, but theres nothing you can do about a misaligned arm. Unless you have spare parts and a clean room handy..

I am no engineer.
Atleast not a hardware engineer
I heard the beep again
K starting DIXML @JaredTritsch help maybe?

I dont normally use DIXML

Tell me somethng that I can use to restore the data using USB

do you want the whole OS? or just your documents/files?

Whole OS
There is not a lot of data in the PC. It is empty
Just finished with updates today
WD Acronis TrueImage, available as a free download on the WD Support site, enables you to copy all your data to a new drive so you don't have to reinstall your operating system to get all the benefits of a new drive.

6:14 PM
i personally wouldnt bother, but DIXML is good for that

these are good step by step guides.
personally, if you dont have anything you can't just reinstall, I'd just wipe it and start fresh again with the new drive.
minimizes chances of corruption/problems with the backup.restore/

The drivers and windows update are annoying
my download speed is 80kbps so yeah, annoying

i know they are, but IMHO id rather waste the time and know itll work the first time
last thing i want is to go through all teh work of the restore, only to find it doesnt work and i have to wipe it again anyway
but thats just my opinion
DIXML works awesome for full disk backup/restores

You are right in a way . HP Doesn;t make it easy to get back all those drivers
you have to manually download and install them

6:17 PM
@FasihKhatib dude very fast I have only 40kbps bandwidth which let me download at 4-5kbps :P
@FasihKhatib I hate HP and WD HDD :P

My browse speed is 600kbps though. Downspeed is limited to 80kbps

@FasihKhatib BSNL unlimited broadband plan right?

@JaredTritsch I will go with DIXML. How do I restore the data without CD-Drive?
@avirk nah, local ISP who use Airtel's connections

@FasihKhatib hmmm Airtel provide a good speed.

@avirk I am bothered about the HDD now :p and restoring the data after RMA. I can ask them to do it at the site actually.

6:23 PM
@FasihKhatib you can back it up onto an external HDD. any sufficiently large storage medium will work
keep in mind that it backs up the whole partition, whether its real data or not, so you need to have backup space for your WHOLE C:\ drive

@JaredTritsch I have a 500GB External drive so I have enough storage space

@JaredTritsch yes that is the right way.

@JaredTritsch I just want it in this same state after I get the new drive after RMA

@FasihKhatib also you can create a backup image of Windows 7 and restore it back after formatting and installing the Windows.

Everything is in C: Drive so I guess once I backup using DIXML, everthing will be backed up

6:26 PM
you have c:, d: and e right?
you create separate images for each one.

D and E are empty
totally empty

then the image will only need to be as large as the max capacity of C
so no, the entire HDD, just the C: partition of it.

yeah I meanat everything on C:
my bad there

ok..
now lets talk about Bart PE

6:28 PM
some people think, "I only have 10 gigs on C:, why is the image 2TB?"
i know nothing about BartPE.

@FasihKhatib the best way is create a backup image of win7 on external HDD and then format the drive and install the Win 7.

you use DIXML's instructions to restore the image. it essentially rebuilds the partition exactly as it was before.

@avirk I have the bootable USB of the OS that I made using my friend's Original DVD

after completing installation you can perform the backup of win7 with that image using recovery option.

no reinstallation of WIn7 needed.... assuming it works.

6:29 PM
There are 2 options. One is RAW mode which backs up bit for bit
other only the used sectors

RAW
bigger image size (a lot bigger) but less chance of something going wrong.

@JaredTritsch I will go with your option. Screw it.

@JaredTritsch that's why I'm suggesting him to use default method of backup.

no backups

its a toss up really. Do yoou want to go through the effort of reinstalling windows, or the effort of wrangling backups? its long boring work either way.

6:31 PM
I will go with your option

me, when its wipe time, I jsut back up the needed files (docs, savegames, etc) then just blow it away clean
copy/paste works great :-P
but then again.... I have a 50Mbit/s connection...

so when I get the new drive, I should do a full format?
how?

when you install windows, it gives you the option to format the disk.

brb in 10

brb. Lunchtime!

6:37 PM
I should do that before I create the partitions?

Yeah sure.
I guess there is not a lot I can do till I get reply from WD's email support

but its part of the same step, when you format it blows away any partitions anyway so youll have to create them again afterwards anyway.

@avirk apna number do yaar

okay i gotta go or ill never eat. brb

6:39 PM
@FasihKhatib amar1virk@gmail.com

kya baat hai kya baat hai :D
@JaredTritsch @avirk I will post it on electronics.stackexchange. I guess it is the problem with the Earth wire in my apartment that is the cause of all this

@FasihKhatib we have to use the English here otherwise you could banned here,

I didnt know that. I apologize

@FasihKhatib hmmm seems logical.
@DanielBeck hello, after many days I'm seeing you here.

@avirk check FB

6:42 PM
@avirk Hello to you too. I've been quite busy with work.

@FasihKhatib I'll when I'll free for that, I use it very rarely now. :)
@DanielBeck hmmm, so very less active on SU.
You missed the Win8 challenge :P

@avirk damn.. that is my life line. My prime source of communicating with the outer world

Didn't miss the challenge, I just have nothing to contribute.

@FasihKhatib I'll see you there or you can use G-talk to chat.

I use yahoo!

6:44 PM
@DanielBeck hmmmm, strange a Geek like you saying this.
@FasihKhatib depends I have a yahoo too.

hmm..
can u come on FB now?

@FasihKhatib let's see :P

@avirk Well, I mostly use OS X and Linux these days. My profile on SU probably reflects that.

@DanielBeck I know that, but you have a good knowledge of Windows as well IMO.

@DanielBeck did you at least get enough for a t-shirt?

6:48 PM
@nhinkle Nope, nothing.

@DanielBeck :(

and what TShirt are we talking of?

I'm guessing they'll still send mods the t-shirts though. Considering how much extra work the influx from the contest has given us.

sweett!

@nhinkle they will parshall it?

6:50 PM
@nhinkle That'd be nice, but I have like 4 regular SU t-shirts already, so I'd survive :)

@FasihKhatib man FB is taking too much time to load on my slow bandwidth sorry!

@avirk what do you mean by parshall?

@DanielBeck Where'd you get 4?

@nhinkle how they will send it to me?

@JaredTritsch man who's installing vista? o_O

6:51 PM
u see, thats why I said mob number is a faster way to communicate. way2sms is awesome

Aha 3 mods together in Room gr8

@slhck 1 for moderating, 3 for MVSU. Nicer than an Amazon gift card.

@FasihKhatib yup that is.

@avirk they will contact you via your email address to get your mailing address, and then send it to you.
@slhck I've got 2... one from the blog, one from being a mod. Also have an SO and an SE shirt from our local meetups.

@DanielBeck Oh, so you just spent the store credit? Should've gotten the awesome meme mug™!

6:53 PM
I want SO Tshirt!
I want an SO tshirt!

@slhck didn't they send all the mods meme mugs though?
@FasihKhatib sadly they shut down the swag store :/

@slhck I even pissed off the team on Meta because of the meme mug™!

@DanielBeck LOL I do recall that.

@nhinkle Not that I'm aware of, but since I already had a shirt I told them I didn't need one and that they should give it away to some runners up from the election :)

6:54 PM
@DanielBeck meme mug?

@nhinkle OK, So all 1st level winner eill get T-shirt?

12
Q: Super User mug design

Daniel Beck This week, slhck (pictured) and me received our SU anniversary contest prizes. I really like most of the stuff I got. But the Super User mug design sucks. It gets the Y U NO guy meme totally wrong. It's neither funny nor does it relate to the coffee mug (like the Stack Overflow one). It mi...

@slhck hmm. Maybe the mugs were before you guys were elected. They've got lots of shirts left, you should've taken the 5th one :P
@avirk see the contest rules:
> Everyone who completes Level 1 will receive a Super User T-shirt.

so you guys are like the authority here?

@FasihKhatib ehhh only to some extent. There's higher-ups than us.

6:55 PM
I have some issues with some tags and closed posts

@FasihKhatib What exactly?

@slhck questions about books are closed

@FasihKhatib You can always post your suggestions on meta. Keep it constructive.

quickly
I guess it is good to discuss then post there?

@FasihKhatib That won't change. The site is about computers, not about books.

6:57 PM
Why include the tag then?
get rid of all tags related to books
it is misleading
also get rid of education tag

fffffff i dun goofed. broke the part that holds my ssd in

@FasihKhatib If you check the tag, most of these are closed.

@nhinkle im not installing vista...

@slhck Well, 20 open, 14 closed.

6:59 PM
@FasihKhatib Users > 300 rep can create tags. It's not really "included" so much as made and then used, doesn't really apply to good vs. bad questions.

Few days ago I saw this post by some lady telling that she has gained some experience about computer troubleshooting and stuff from her job and she wants to learn more. WHERE DO I START she asked. CLOSED!

@DanielBeck needs to clean up the tag

@JaredTritsch sure looks like a vista screenshot to me

cause.. there are sometimes where only other, more experienced users can help

7:00 PM
@FasihKhatib That's a little open-ended for a question. There's no real problem to solve either.

hmm..
I felt bad for that lady
and myself
cause I have a lot of closed questions about books on SO :D

@FasihKhatib Well, they used to allow these questions in the beginning, and some sites – to some extent – still keep lists of books, but those would be better suited for a tag wiki or something.

Just 4 laughs. Hope it is not off-topic cause I see no LAUGH tag :D
This guy is a Systems Analyst and a Comedian in UK.
:D

@FasihKhatib This chat only had the tags , and anyway.

lol
lets add Russell to it

7:08 PM

Never gonna buy! Never!
He was probably drunk and chased by bunch of angry monkeys. Thats why he bought it
@nhinkle are you into programming?

@FasihKhatib I dabble

@nhinkle language?
I am into Java and I am self-taught. Would be great to have some company actually.
:D Let me put it simply.. a mentor :D

yea I don't know any java, sorry

sad for me :D
@JaredTritsch watch this when you are back youtube.com/watch?v=9QFK1cLhytY
and that goes out to all Microsoft lovers as well

7:18 PM
does anyone have a download link for windows 8 pro? could only find ones that are VL and N

Does anyone here have experience with a Synology DS 1812+?

Does anybody here do Java/

i do a bit of java

@MatthewWong hmm like a DigitalRiver download? FWIW, you should be able to download a VL iso and change the ei.cfg file to make it whatever you want.

@FasihKhatib Only if there's a good reason to.

7:20 PM
great!
i taught myself enough to implement simple stream ciphers :)
Now, I have to move on to ODBC, Beans, JSP n all
So I thought a mentor would be nice

@FasihKhatib Like Daniel said, only if I really have to use it. Or for Android.

@slhck is Learning XML really necessary for being good in Java?

@FasihKhatib Not much to "learn" about XML, really. You're not going to use lots of XML anyway these days, other than for heavyweight web services (SOAP) or semantic web stuff.
Might be useful to learn a bit of XPath

There you go, SOAP. JSP and Servelets.
I have made a chart of what to do in near future

Are you doing it just for fun?

7:22 PM
I finished reading Art of Software Testing by Glen Myres and I was planning on JUnit
No, I study Software Engineering but I digress from what is taught and venture on my own

@FasihKhatib What are you taught?

@FasihKhatib If you're using JSP and Java and all that stuff — I thought this was taught
Like, at our university they look at me like I'm totally out of my mind when I say I program in Ruby or Python.

I have to do JSP next semester. The syllabus never goes beyond basics so I sit down with tomes and read them cover to cover :D
I go crazy when I code in Java. I sit for like hours on end and get up only when I am done

@slhck Wait, even the NLP guys? I got the impression they love Python.

How many of us here are students?

7:26 PM
@DanielBeck No one's ever used Python there. For the retrieval courses, this semester they switched from Java to R (and MATLAB for multimedia retrieval).

@slhck My classmates never move beyond int c = a + b;

@FasihKhatib I am. Computer science.

and I was explaining my screen recorder prototype and apparently nobody has heard of iterators sigh

@FasihKhatib Depending on the programming language, the basic unary and binary operators take quite some effort to get right.

huh? seriously? I thought the only place people struggle are in bitwise operators
cya guys. It is 1am in my country. Hope 2 see you later.
Night all!

7:29 PM
Bye @FasihKhatib

@FasihKhatib Good night.

and help here if you can electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/47199/… @slhck @DanielBeck

8:04 PM
@nhinkle its a Win7 screenshot from the OS installer.
@FasihKhatib haha that video was aweome! ive seen it before
however.... I know how to code in .net.... no so much in java...

3 hours later…
10:42 PM
I think I need to search for (and find), or write a canonical answer for "Halp halp. My 3TB drives on MBR partition are 750GB!"

@JaredTritsch must be one of the previews or something

11:22 PM
idk. i yanked it from a random how-to guide that had a screenshot walkthrough
+ a little mspaint

@FasihKhatib: Pending error count = there's a bad sector which hasn't been reallocated yet
one or two is alright, if you have lots, get a new drive

11:40 PM
seems questionable
