7:00 AM
I did it in the UK, its been a while.

@JeffAtwood energy efficiency is a big deal. More than half the energy we consume in the US is literally wasted. It's refreshing to see hardware power consumption coming down.

good night @KronoS!

@JeffAtwood glad you got things figured out, and I totally envy you and you're server builds

'night @KronoS. get ready for the blog posts tomorrow

l8rs...

7:00 AM
@nhinkle: its been happening across the board

@nhinkle I know... I'm gettin ready for em

yeah thanks for the help all. Sometimes you need someone to bang their head on the wall with you.
TO SHARE THE PAIN

lol
You mean, to rubber duck ;p

haha

well, rubber ducking I view as more "I have this problem and I think.." whereas this was more "I have tried a zillion things and I am screwed"

7:02 AM
If it worked, you wouldn't have to ask

yeah but before I ask anyone, you can rest assured I have busted ass trying to figure it out
that's.. not always true of everyone else who asks

like me!

it varies, some folks like to go deep before asking, others somewhat, others are fine with asking as soon as they are mildly confused

i would be in the somewhat region I suppose.

anyways, appreciate the assistance. I always edit and polish up SU questions whenever I can.
I like gardening! :)

7:05 AM
Yeah, i guess Ask Ubuntu would love your job.

lol
@jokerdino: you guys need better question-asking folk ;p
hides

Classic @jokerdino :P But yeah, I guess you get a ton of mediocre questions.

We get a lot of bug reports with no necessary information to solve them properly :(
An auto script that asks for information depending on tags, keywords, etc might be good.

I've always wanted to make a flowchart-based suggestion system for SU

like network issues asks for ifconfig or something like that.

7:08 AM
@slhck: that would be a neat idea ;p

Like those helpdesk support websites where you can just click a predefined set of options and only get to the custom contact form once you've seen the most frequently asked questions or got a proper introduction on how to ask

But that'd be a huge showstopper for most people I guess :P

Bob
Just use that? :P

in other words, make it difficult to let them ask questions! I like it.

7:09 AM
@Bob Hahaha, I did have something like this in mind actually.

@slhck: actually more like an adjunct to the SET

@JourneymanGeek SET?

Stack Exchange Trilogy ;p

I thought that was "SOFU" :P

prolly
/me blames IM

7:11 AM
@slhck I keep reading that as STFU.

SOFU! It's like TOFU, but with more stacks, servers, and supers

'Take a management second major, he said. It would be easy, and you'd have more options'
;p

lol

who has time for second majors? :P

well they are often easier
@nhinkle: same number of modules for either ;p
its either 7 + 5 random modules, or 6+6

7:12 AM
says the not-chemical-engineering-student. 192 credits, man! life is hard

And I have a SLIGHTLY more impressive sounding BSc
"Computer Forensics and Information security management, and management"

Do you guys graduate with MSc then? Or is a BSc considered a "major" degree?

(also, administrative issues, I had to do a management course to act as my uni first year)
BSc is the 'basic' degree (or Ba, or BComm, depending)

I have no idea about the international system, I'm somewhat spoiled with the German / middle European way.

I'd be doing my masters if yanno

7:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek you're down under, right?

I didn't flunk out twice
@nhinkle: My school is, I'm not ;p

Wait. Where are you then if you're not where your school is?

@nhinkle: basically they have two 'partner' schools here

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, we have BSc/MSc systems here as well now.

his school is in Australia.
And he is in his house.

7:14 AM
lol

Murdoch University is a public university based in Perth, Western Australia. It began operations as the state's second university in 1973, and accepted its first students in 1975. Its name is taken from Sir Walter Murdoch (1874–1970), the Founding Professor of English and former Chancellor of the University of Western Australia. Strengths and affiliations Murdoch University is a research intensive institution and a member of Innovative Research Universities Australia (IRU Australia). basically they have a singaporean branch run by another school
(oh, its not THAT complex ;p)
I could, in theory spend a semester at the perth campus

@Bob see why our gravatars are relevant now?

gravatars are relevant?

Bob
@nhinkle Hmm... Not really sure, tbh. Unless you're referring to that challenge, which is a rather loose connection :\

@Bob yep. That's about it.

Bob
7:19 AM
head => desk

eek. i'm almost at 16K... been a while since i hit a 1k milestone

been a while since i got any rep
oh wait. I got 2 rep last night.

lol
ugh, I probably should not be answering windows 8 questions where there's no definitive answers yet.

7:38 AM
eh, gonna download the eval edition, then see if i can't get myself a vhd install

@JourneymanGeek if you write a blog post about how to use the eval version and set up a VHD tile, boom, tile completed!

@nhinkle: I was thinking of asking it as a question ;p

that works too. rep and prize entries!

I'm more interested in the T-shirt challenge for now ;p

aw man, @studiohack's catching up with me!
must ask more questions

7:44 AM
done ;p

Q: How would I do a VHD install of Windows 8 from windows 7

Journeyman GeekI'm currently waiting on my shiny new system to run windows 8 on. I have an older system that has windows 7 installed now on which I'd like to try windows 8 on in the meanwhile. I intend to use the enterprise edition evaluation in order to try it, and then uninstall it when I get my new system. ...

and another related question

welp i need to sleep
'night all

good night

Bob
8:07 AM
Nice timing, @nhinkle
You closed the question in the five seconds between me clicking on it and clicking close :P

I think I'm gonna hit rep cap today for the first time in ages

8:38 AM
Sigh. Beginning my Win8 download purely for the challenge.

8:56 AM
@Paul: ditto
@Sathya: yay!

9:18 AM
:p
Hi...all

9:53 AM
lo

10:36 AM
Fun
I think I have a bad fan, it makes a funny noise until percussive maintainance is applied

1 hour later…
Bob
11:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek Ah, good ol' percussive maintenance. Guaranteed to either fix it or break it.

@Bob: Its an older box

M$ Bob

Bob
Something always happens.

if it breaks, I swap it with a spare or buy another fan

Bob
lol
just watch the hard drive

11:54 AM
what the hell is wrong with yo?

Bob
in fact, disk drives are probably the only computer components that care about a little bump. Or a big bump.
The rest? As long as the case doesn't deform, they should be fine :P

lol
just enough force does the trick
not like I hit it with a hammer
hm

Bob
Once we had a customer bring his system into our service center. He seemed to know a little about computers but thought he was an expert, so as soon as I started to ask a few basic questions about his hard drive problems, he said, "Look, I know that it's the hard drive thats stick because when I do this it works again." As he spoke, he lifted the back of the tower off the bench by about four inches and dropped it.

My jaw dropped by about the same amount, and my supervisor, who was nearby at the time, just stared at the system. I recovered enough to say, "Well, we'll take care of it now, so

@Bob no formatting with multi line chat msg

Bob
@jokerdino D:
@jokerdino That'll have to do.

i am fine with that

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Uhm...
> have the path way and congestion cleared
Does the computer have a cold or something?!

12:13 PM
Hello guys.
@Bob I'm trying to root my phone using this guide but I'm not success.

@bob, your gravatar creeps me out.

while falshing the kernel is successful.
I can't figure out why my device is not rooting :\

Bob
I don't know.
ADB rooting never worked for me.
The first time, on Gingerbread (2.3), I just flashed the kernel using Odin

@Bob so how you do that

Bob
On ICS (4.0), I flashed a temporary CWM recovery using the stock recovery and then flashed a root update via the CWM recovery
@avirk Odin is Samsung specific, apparently

12:20 PM
@Bob but I'm on ICS now, and it will take too much time to downgrade it to me :/

Bob
I've never used a Sony phone before, so I'm not the person to ask :P

@Bob any specific way for Xperia mini ST15i

Bob
16 secs ago, by Bob
I've never used a Sony phone before, so I'm not the person to ask :P

@Bob my bad now :(

Bob
Considering different models even from one manufacturer can behave completely differently when it comes to firmware, I won't risk giving advice for Sony phones :P
Heck, my phone is a variant of the standard SII and it behaves differently too.
@avirk You may have better luck with Google/in Android Enthusiasts or their chatrooms
I'm going to go to sleep now. Probably.
Good luck, @avirk

12:23 PM
@Bob unfortunately no one is in that caht
@Bob good night
@Bob thanks

Bob
@avirk Ask a question on the main site?
@avirk Wait, it looks like that may have wirjed
Make sure you are flashign with a rooted kernel
uhm
when rooted, a superuser control/elevation (sudo) app is normally installed (alongside the binary)
try something like Root Explorer
try to mount / as R/W

@Bob I downloaded it form talk.sonymobile.com/thread/41119

Bob
try Titanium Backup, that will tell you if it has root permissions

@Bob what will it do

Bob
@avirk allow you to view the root filesystem (/), and mount it as writable

12:27 PM
@Bob if it has not the permissions then what should I do?

Bob
@avirk Then it's likely not rooted. Ask on Android Enthusiasts or something..?
I'm actually going to sleep now :P
Bye, good luck.

@Bob hmm then I should have to download a rooted kernel, right?
@Bob bye, thanks :)

@TomWijsman: superuser.com/questions/490294/… sorry dude, but I think you got beaten to that

Okay, but your answer is wrong because there is a replacement. :D

@TomWijsman: feel free to answer ;p
Its a zero vote answer on my side, so I wouldn't feel bad if there was a better answer that made mine obsolete
And I'd just delete that annoying speculative answer ;p

12:37 PM
@JourneymanGeek: Well, haven't actually tried it but it's worth a shot.

A: How will users Sync their Media with Windows Phone devices?

Tom WijsmanAccording to this article, they have replaced Zune Music by Xbox Music, this is even listed on their site itself, youc an see it on http://www.zune.net. The same article also mentions: Support for Zune devices can be accessed in the Zune support section on xbox.com, it added.

@TomWijsman: I'll likely try it once I've done a VHD install of windows 8 and documented it for the blog.

I accidentally placed that answer here... xD

(since I'm guessing the blog tile will probably be the hardest to get. And I need a install of windows 8 to play with pending building the new system)

@JourneymanGeek: How does the blog tile work? Just write a post?

I believe so

12:40 PM
Because I feel like the sharing / views tiles are harder than that.
Unless you were to cheat them...

eh ;p
/me shows off his very shiny white hat

Or have a lot of people visit it with luck...

lol, reddit something I guess

Hmm, would linking any post work or just the ones since the contest?

I don't see that many folk going for it so far tho, maybe cause its the first day, but most of the 'regular' tiers seem to be site regulars
the two newbies I notice seem to have slunk off after having half their questions closed..

12:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, think the +3 and more votes are gonna be based on luck for me, am running Gentoo Linux.
As for the tiles, got 4 of them, believe I can still get the blog one. The bounty one is going to be a bit more tricky unless I self-assign that one... :P
And the views is going to be really hard.

didn't you run windows off a VHD before?

> If we start building "courtrooms", that's.. scary. I've recently been part of a public jury trial, and the further we can stay away from that level of process, the better off we will be, unless it is a method of absolute last world-ending resort.

A: Handling Calls to Remove a Moderator

Jeff AtwoodFirst, it should never come to this -- as Robert Harvey pointed out, this should be handled via private conversations whenever possible. Moderators are supposed to be exemplars of 99% good community behavior, and part of good community behavior is recognizing problem behaviors -- even your own! -...

what's going on actually?

1:01 PM
@jokerdino from RC's question I sense that the number of Moderators are more than what the SE team can keep tabs on

@jokerdino: Some user asked for a moderator to be removed from his post, this was discussed internal and just a specific moderator action was reverted. Robert later saw that question and asks the community to think this through, Jeff comes up an approach where a sufficient majority of the mods can evidence such thing happening and get a moderator removed. They also monitor the moderators on a regular basis to see that they don't breach what they agreed upon.
Summarized that would mean: You can't get some users remove a certain moderator, you can't get some mods make a mess of the site.

Hm. some issue out of no issue.

that's really not what's discussed there

It's a summary of the whole thing, I didn't refer to the discussion.

the premise is that an action of Moderator impeachment maybe needed in the near future

1:05 PM
which is terrible news

because they fear a "rogue Moderator" might screw up things
now RC's brought this up, I don't think this was brought up on a whim
I think Jeff comments that suspensions were not in the system, till they needed

Probably there have been similar requests elsewhere.

and this comment by Jeff makes me believe something's going on

@JourneymanGeek Well, yeah, but that was Windows 7 --> Windows 8.
Now I'm just on Gentoo with Windows 7 in a VM (because I have no perm license of Windows 8).

so what are we getting at? mods have to be wary of getting called out?

1:15 PM
@jokerdino not for now, but wouldn't be too surprised about that happening
which is likely to piss me off because I'm doing this out of my free time that I'm volunteering

that is just going to make a voluntary job more painful
@Sathya was just about to say that

@jokerdino: I think they always have to watch their steps, some actions are irreversible or hardly reversible (like merging two questions, doing some magic with tags, merging an account into another, ...). Don't think they have to be wary of getting called out, they should be allowed to make a mistake (they're human) but they shouldn't do that on a daily / weekly basis though... :D

being a moderator more or less means being the most hated guy

I get it. Honest mistakes shouldn't be dealbreakers.
/me adds Sathya to the hitlist.

and then you have people who out of their delusions kick up conspiracy theories about Mods targetting them
why the bleep should I give a bleep about a random person?

A: Windows 7 Export Power Plan Settings

avirkClick on the start button and type cmd now right click on cmd and choose Run as Administrator or press the Ctrl+Shift+Enter. Now type the following command in the command line windows powercfg list type the command below for the power plan that you want to export, and press enter. ...

Take him out ^ :P

@Sathya: Yup, sent quite some hate to Random myself, which I didn't feel right about him being a moderator for some time but now I think the opposite. Had much smaller issues with the others where we simply disagreed, but not in a way that I think they wouldn't be a moderator. I'd think for an user to publicly request a moderator to be removed from his spot based on a single action is even hopeless...
@Sathya Moment...

yeah

Q: What do we have to do as a community to reconnect with our past?

RSolbergI'll admit it, I have not been very active on SO for the past 18 months. In part due to having other things that I have to get done and also in part due to the decline of feeling good about spending time on the site. When I first started using SO, for me it was about getting help on a project I...

This is full of "alienation" and "mods-rule-the-roost" talk.

yeah see that often on Meta Stack Overflow

1:42 PM
Windows 8 challenge!? Possible Surface? ... I know I won't get it... but... COOL!!!!

@WilliamHilsum: go for it anyway. I'm just in it for the darned T-Shirt ;p

I'm in it for the mouse :-D
though I have a G400...

@Sathya: Tho, that folding keyboard looks nice
/me doubts he'll qualify for the surface without massive luck

same

1:57 PM
but then again. frigging SU T Shirt number 2
cause my old one is faded as hell ;p

I have 2 so far

Note: hell is faded.

could use a Metro variant :P

@Shiki: yes, and a little tattered.
There's no damned engineers in hell ;p

most of the tech events you'll see me with a Super User or a Web Applications t shirt

1:59 PM
@Sathya: I got the 'original' bunch they were sending out to high rep users

off late, with a Stack Exchange t-shirt too

actually, that was when I first realised I was a high rep user

Is the shirt free and open-source? Do you have access to the code of the used graphics and software?

I also have a SU hoodie

See that ^^^ HIRE MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
(Stack Exchange ambassador for South East Asia :P)

2:00 PM
haha
i'll be the third in line.

@Sathya:If I ever go to a interview somewhere cool, I'll wear the LWF and the SU hoodie.

@JourneymanGeek same, first bunch for being on page 1

now, if they had given me a AU shirt instead of SE, i would be happier.

second was for Mod appointment

I didn't even know I was on page one before that ;p
mods get t shirts?

2:01 PM
mod nominees get too.

darn ;p

i just want nom noms instead

NOW I know why EC stands for elections
Its for the damned swag

not nominees, @jokerdino
I didn't get one for Stack Overflow

@Sathya I did o.O

2:02 PM
for AU?

yeah

did you reach 3rd/4th/runners up?

or do you mean people who got until the primaries?

I was 6th.

well maybe AU has different rules? being, well canonical?

2:02 PM
dunno
I was 5th, iirc, no t for me :(

maybe they stopped after that.

oh Sathya!
the metro shirt. you are a Win8 expert then, right?
anyone? halp pls?

throws @Shiki a concrete life preserver

2:18 PM
no seriously, any Win8 expert would do the job, I would have to do some work in Java but I'm stuck

0
A: Why is there a blank space at the top of the questions list?

SathyaThere's a message regarding Win8 challenge over there. Your ad blocker seems to be blocking it

@Shiki the only win8 experts right now work for microsoft

@Shiki I haz no java stuff

there are regular users and then there are people who got it on the first day it was on MSDN (or even the release preview) and have been finding its quirks since, but still, there's no such thing as a win8 expert yet

grrrrrrr. I was fighting with this marketing hype train by Microsoft all the time. I got mad when I installed it first.. it is terrible for work by default. Start8 fixed this.
But now JAVA DOES NOT WORK. There are lik a few days left until the public release, and you still can't work with it.

2:23 PM
start8 is great

lol "with tit"

I need a day or 3 to set it up

I don't mean it's an unsuable crap, but it's an unusable crap. :D

@Shiki what do you mean "can't"? what error do you get?

2:24 PM
"This app is not compatible." According to Microsoft. According to me, the previous version works perfectly.

@Shiki: how about compatibility mode?

But the previous one works flawless without that.
Like you know... it would be kinda.. back to the past
(I'm holding it wrong?)

naw, its an entirely plausible solution

try openjdk 8 preview.... just saying

If it fucks up in the future, go BACK TO THE FUTURE!

2:25 PM
hmm that holds true Win8 on PC I guess

you're using winRT?

@allquixotic - I'm using Wuala as for backup, and I don't really want to use the preview because of that. I need something stable, reliable for backup. (And I would use Java for Eclipse and Netbeans, where a crash would result in data loss too.)

I'm using it on PC. And Windows 7 is like some OS from the future compared to 8.
There is no "better performance", faster startup or anything. It's all lies, make-up lies by marketing. At least when Apple says "2x faster", it really is
(Let me explain myself a bit. Faster startup may seem true at first. Heck, you get the "start screen" really fast. It pops up, all dem tiles, all the useless information. It's all good. But then you want Desktop, as you have a job, or you just want to do something useful. Now that's where the rest of that "fast" comes in. 8 loads the rest WHEN you push the button.

So if you add these two load times together, it's the same as in Windows 7. Even with the hybrid-boot, nothing.

{Load time until Start} + {Load time for Desktop} == {Full boot time Windows 7})

QQ: What would be the best RAID for a database server/file server: RAID 10 or RAID 5? Assuming it has a dedicated RAID card, for Windows Server 2012 SBS, and storage space is sufficient

looks like @nhinkle wants the surface bad :P
off to sleep anyway. ciao

darn you @nhinkle! I was totally set to be very productive on my app today and you just HAD to ask the interesting question for me to get sidetracked on!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrr......
Been about 15 mins and only gotten this far

Probably the last two options.

@TomWijsman Agreed

6:07 PM
@Luke It really depends on what the situation is actually
If you're looking for more data redundancy then 10 is the best
if you're up for a little bit of risk, but more space then 5 works
either way RAID are simple on paper, but very very very buggy in practice

@KronoS It's for a customer who needs fast data access, and is currently working off of a mirror array from Dell... And it's 8 years old
I've had good an bad experience with RAID 0, 1, 5 and 10, but want to know what should be used professionally

For faster data access the 10 is better
Raid 5 performance is lacking

6:35 PM
@Luke I prefer RAID 6
1+0 is overkill IMHO unless you really, really need it

@OliverSalzburg RAID 6 is just RAID 5 with two parities, is it not?

@Luke Yes

I don't need to worry about overhead
I would prefer performance with redundancy, so I guess I'd say RAID 10, unless 6 is faster

I like RAID6 because any 2 drives can die and your array is still "fine"

@OliverSalzburg The thing about RAID 6 is that it requires at least 4 drives

6:37 PM
Same with 10

With 1+0, if "the right 2 drives" die, you might have a problem

True... How is performance on 6?

@Luke I haven't really run any comparisons where I could have
There was never really a question about it.

I'm afraid to ask, cause I fear I'd make it too subjective and it'd get closed

I've really only used 5 and 6 long time (and numerous mirrors, of course). Never had a 1+0 setup

6:40 PM
@Luke It's difficult to get real answers... if only we could get enough funds to do a blog post

@OliverSalzburg I've seen great speeds out of RAID 1+0, for obvious reasons... But I don't know how it'd perform for databases with lots of changes happening constantly

@Luke IMHO RAID should always be a means of increasing reliability and nothing else. Pick the level that ensures the highest level of availability for your system, if you need better performance, get better drives/controllers :\

@KronoS I agree, I'd love to get funding for that study
I was going to put either Blacks (yuck) or else RE4 drives from WD... I don't want to have them use SSDs for a server
And I don't think they'd go for 10K or 15K drives...

7:03 PM
@Luke Regarding performance, I really have no clue. I've never been in a situation where I had to built a system where performance was a priority.
And the RAID5 and 6 setups I produced were rarely saturated either (by the tasks people used them for).
Though, I really have a hard time imagining that performance differences between 5/6 and 10 are really noticeable.
Some hard data would be nice to read :)

7:21 PM
I agree

Thanks @OliverSalzburg

Q: Windows 8 Challenge doesn't list users who've completed Tiles Challenge

I downvoted @billc.cn's answer when it was an "I think" answer. It seems he edited it within the 5 min (I think?) window where it doesn't show it's been edited. Consequently I can't upvote it instead. :( What do?

@Luke Wow, that's pretty awesome.

Considering my son is only 16 months... It's great as a backup!
My son is still OK with his mom, but if it goes south again, I have a backup
To me, that's just freakin' awesome!
