11:01 PM
But, time to head home... TTYAL

Morning
Exam in the morning. Gonna try to hack windows 8 into running off a VHD in the afternoon ;p

Bob
11:41 PM
@JourneymanGeek Good luck to both! :P

@Bob: and documenting the process so that I can get a blog post out ;)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Aren't there already blogs describing running Win8 off a VHD?

not on SU blog ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If this is for the challenge...
> Must be your own creation & not a re-write of another blog post from either the Superuser blog or any other publicly available blogs.
You're walking a very fine line :P

@Bob: why else do you think I need to spend an afternoon getting it to work?

Bob
11:44 PM
@JourneymanGeek But are you going to look up instructions or just muddle through?

@Bob: bit of both

@JourneymanGeek No need to hack.

Bob
lol

I'd cite, but go into further detail into what the commands actually do, and include my own impressions

Bob
:D

11:46 PM
@TomWijsman: I have half a clue to what I'm doing. I have one source which is just commands.

@JourneymanGeek hanselman.com/blog/… (updated link to a newer version)

Make an empty VHD
Attach to the VHD just before installing Windows 8 Developer Preview
Install to the VHD
Rejoice
Well yeah, that might work as well.

@TomWijsman: the other method seems nicer since I get to keep the windows 7 bootloader
since I'm using the evaluation edition for this run, reversibility is important
(I think thats another way to say 'I'm a bit of a pussy')

@JourneymanGeek: Does keeping that boot loader really matter?

Bob
11:50 PM
@JourneymanGeek I assume the bootloader won't get locked when the evaluation period ends
in any case, you can always restore/repair the Win7 one :P

@TomWijsman: not hugely, would be nice since my linux install is on my windows 7 bootloader

When I picked Windows 7 when doing this it actually rebooted in the old bootloader.

Bob
ah

Because the new one is in the VHD, don't ask me how this works though... :P
And, you can always put back the Windows 7 boot loader from the installation medium.

also this is very similar to the WTG install process

11:51 PM
Or, you could install Grub as your main and introduce chain loading.

which I want to try, just for the hell of it

Bob
I haven't read any of those installation guide, but... are you supposed to boot into a blank VHD?
Seems a bit risky.

(hmm, does two blog entries mean two raffle tickets?)
@Bob: no, basically we're running imagex, which applies the WIM image from the disk into the blank VHD

Bob
Would making a new Virtual PC, installing Win8 in there and taking hte VHD to boot directly off of work?
@JourneymanGeek Oh. I see.. :P

@JourneymanGeek: Haha, I doubt it as it shows 0/1 on my profile. Although I'd just submit multiple for the fun of it...
your Windows 8 blog posts Challenge accepted?! :D
And perhaps troll @KronoS by creating a -based QotW entry, which links to my referral link. >_<
