some people might even consider Java to be a low-level programming language if they use something even more abstract like a rules engine or web programming like JavaScript and JSP
it's all about grabbing a platform with the portability, compatibility, maintainability, performance, and library routine availability that you need for your particular project

I consider C++ a low level language >_>
if you have manual memory management then its low level

that's just your definition. many professional computer scientists would disagree, as would many textbooks.
it's completely arbitrary

For sure.
i dont even know what the standard definitions for low or high are

standard as in textbook? it pretty much defines anything higher level than assembler as a high-level language, and assembler and lower as low-level

Bob
@allquixotic 'lower'
hello, machine code!

12:05 AM
rsync is my new favourite tool

historically, C was seen as a great convenience because you no longer had to worry about things like saving registers, managing the program counter and frame pointer, or memory addressing schemes (I think x86 has something like 23 different ways to read or write memory)
it also included a number of somewhat tricky assembly constructs in simple logical English words, like for and if
by that standard, it's quite high-level

Bob
@allquixotic What's the difference between the >& and &> redirectors, if any? :S

@Bob I've never used &>; tldp says it only started working as of Bash 4.0, so it's probably a synonym for >& but I don't know for sure

Bob
I didn't even know they existed... been wasting all this time adding 2>&1 to the end when redirecting stderr :\

@Bob a long time ago before I knew about screen and nohup, I used to throw processes into the background in my shell using whatever-binary >& /dev/null &
i learned about screen and nohup out of necessity when i started needing to leave stuff running on my server when logging out of ssh
oh man
if i get near a verizon wireless store, i need someone to stand near me with a tazer and taze me each time i try to reflexively go to the counter and ask to buy a Razr Maxx HD for retail price (to preserve my unlimited plan)
I WANT IT but spending that money is ... just wrong

2 hours later…
1:50 AM
@allquixotic: you obviously need to throw something together with tasker and ioio to do this. Automatic tasering once you get into wifi range of a verizon store!

@JourneymanGeek xD

2 hours later…
4:26 AM
huh, @Bob goes the MSFT @Bob way and @nhinkle goes the Spablet (Spock-Tablet) way.
good morning indeed

Bob
@Sathya I still don't understand.

@Bob gravatars

Bob
@Sathya Well, yes, but is there a special event or something? :\

you'll know soon enough

Bob
...

4:32 AM
;)

Bob
Unless it's got something to do with the Surface, but even then... bleh.

@Bob well...

Bob
@Sathya Bleh. I still haven't used Win8.

4:49 AM
@Bob: I'll likely throw win8 into the gaming rig I should have built by now ;p
stupid real life and crap ;p
so neither have I

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Actually, how does Win8 perform with graphics intensive/fullscreen/FPS games? Has anyone here tried?

@Bob: something worth trying out

Q: Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

soandosI am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino ...

7 does do a trial version, right?

Bob
I think all copies of Windows will give you 30 days for activation or something.
- which can be reset three times in Win7, giving you 120 days of nothing more than reminder.
@JourneymanGeek Which stupid manufacturer thought it would be fun to waste battery power on a wireless transmitter?

4:58 AM
@Bob: could be a passively powered reciecver/transmitter

Bob
> Manufacturers of implanted devices have been resistant to calls to publish their sourcecode and to allow device owners to inspect and modify that code, citing security concerns should latent vulnerabilities be exposed, and put implantees at risk.
Yay for security through obscurity! :\

@Sathya when does it end tho?

@Bob I have Windows 8 on my laptop and desktop. Games run as well or better than on Windows 7. Played all the way through Black Mesa Source on Windows 8. It was beautiful.

@Bob: I prefer security through obscenity. Almost as effective, makes me feel better ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek They say it can broadcast, though. A passive receiver, maybe. A transmitter would require power though, wouldn't it?

4:59 AM
Who fancies a Ubuntu blog post on blog.SU? :P

@Bob: could be a transmitter powered by an external power source

@Bob at least with the MSDNAA version, you must enter a license key immediately on installation. You cannot install without a license key. That may be different for retail installs, but I'm not sure yet.

Bob
> reprogram pacemakers to broadcast malicious firmware updates as their owners move around, which cause them to also spread the firmware

ok, thats just silly

Bob
@nhinkle I don't have any good hardware to spare to try :P
In any case, I'm waiting until I can get a touchscreen. Possibly next year.
@nhinkle Yea, retail's different: windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/…

5:03 AM
@nhinkle try telling that to Diablo III

Bob
> Yes. You have 30 days after installing Windows to activate it online or by telephone. With an activated copy of Windows, you'll be able to use every feature of Windows.
> If you don’t activate Windows within 30 days after installation, you will not be able to use every feature of Windows. You can regain full use of your computer by activating Windows.
So basically, it locks down after 30 days.

I'll give it a shot. I'd still want my new system up first ;p

I'm still running on RP
:P
guess it's time to boot into it :P

@Sathya have you had a negative experience with gaming on windows 8?
Also FYI to all of you, there's a 90 day Enterprise trial edition.
@Bob "Applies to all editions of Windows Vista."
windows.microsoft.com/en-US windows-vista /Activating-Windows-frequently-asked-questions

@nhinkle it's the reason why I'm still on Win 7 (the multi-monitor thing is also there, but that's not much of a problem). Also, no WIn 8 drivers for GPU. had to force install Win 7 drivers

Bob
5:15 AM
@nhinkle Whoops? :P

@Sathya They have since removed the "Avoid the pain of Windows 8" banner.

yay, one more hour and I should have one of the tag clean up tags gotten rid of

@jokerdino too late
> My non-IT boss likes to pretend he knows everything about IT. He came in two minutes ago, saw a CD lying on my desk labeled "Ubuntu Live 12.04" and asked me as cool as can be: "Ubuntu? i think i heard them on 105.7 this morning..." "Ubuntu? yeah, they used to tour with Journey all the time." - reddit

I know. I found the joke lame since Ubuntu 12.10 is pretty buggy.

@jokerdino buggy*? How so?

5:23 AM
@Sathya I am using it since alpha 3 release and it isn't quite solid.

@jokerdino: Its unity ;p
Its not as painful on KDE

It's not just Unity. the underlying GNOME technology is pretty broke.

@Sathya groan that thread is horrible
@jokerdino: Old gnome wasn't bad. I hear nice things about cinnamon

Cinnamon? laughs

I do wish someone would build a compositable desktop with stability and speed in mind over eye candy

5:27 AM
xfce. they don't add or remove features though.

it's been a while since I've used KDE
I think I was the only guy who loved KDE4
(and I mean the first release of KDE4 where everyone kept trashing it)
funnily I see the same reaction with Unity & Gnome 3

@Bob again, it's changed.

12.04 was significantly better than 12.10.

People are resistant to change, whether they want to believe it or not

@Sathya hm. Well it's working fine for me. I guess YMMV. Laptops are more likely to have driver problems I expect, too.

Bob
5:30 AM
@nhinkle Changed?

I'm loving the multimonitors in 8. Perhaps the single best improvement from my perspective.
@Bob that's the Windows 7 info. Windows 8 has different requirements.

@Sathya That would explain why quite a lot of people dislike Unity, GNOME 3, etc. :P

Bob
@nhinkle We were talking about Windows 7. I think?

@nhinkle only one metro app running at a time. fail.

Bob
36 mins ago, by Journeyman Geek
7 does do a trial version, right?

5:31 AM
@Sathya true. That's annoying.
@Bob ah. Yes. But I thought the implication was that would continue to be the trend in Windows 8, which it isn't.

Bob
@Sathya Wait (and hope) for the next one to introduce better multitasking? :P

@Sathya although I see few applications for having more than 2 metro apps at once, but it would be nice sometimes.

@nhinkle and yes, I have the hybrid IGP + discrete combo, so I need to sacrifice my balls to HP. Even with that I doubt I'll get a decent driver update

@Sathya ah. Yeah, that might be unlikely. My laptops new enough (and just straight Intel HD graphics), so I got lucky.

@nhinkle metro browser + metro twitter was my main use case

5:37 AM
I THINK you can do 2 at a time

@JourneymanGeek hacky way is to move it to the side of your screen
but not all metro apps support it

ya that
/me rather doubts he'll spend much time in metro anyhow

Bob
Overlapping windows! Yay!
I never really understood Metro. If I have a >20" screen, I sure want to use all that space as efficiently as possible - and being trapped in one program doesn't normally help...

lol
I do one window at a time for some reason, unless I'm working on say a report or assignment >_>

5:55 AM
In case you haven't seen it, awesome gallery of Google's datacenters

it's the Google street view datacenters.
and others too. looks like I missed the update

Haven't seen this yet. Pretty nice color system :P

Yo gents. Wondering if anyone could aid with a bash script.
Looking to finish off the ordeal that @allquixotic and @Bob have been so kind to help me with.
(If anyone has seen...)
Anyway. I'm trying to change a bunch of HTML pages' file encodings form ascii to utf-8.

@slhck @jokerdino new avatar's cool.

6:10 AM
thanks

I don't know bash, but from some googling it seems that I might be able to for file in *.html and then use iconv within the body of the for loop
(pretty standard stuff)
but since iconv spits out the contents of the resulting encoding change, I'm not sure how to just write it back to the same file.

@Bob that app didn't work even follow there instructions for unroot device :-B

@JourneymanGeek you can do two side-by-side on the same screen, split in fourths - [_|___] like that

shows what I know
apparently chrome remote does sound forwarding too now

6:28 AM

Q: How can I make iconv replace the input file with the converted output?

mederI have a bash script which enumerates through every *.php file in a directory and applies iconv to it. This gets output in STDOUT. Since adding the -o parameter ( in my experience ) actually writes a blank file probably before the conversion takes place, how can I adjust my script so it does th...

@nhinkle shows how little I know now ;p

@slhck Hm. Not sure if this is working for me.
I'm wondering if there are any os x inconsistencies.
Side note: is it possible to execute a bash command within a bash if conditional expression?
It sounds like bad practice just by typing it out, but I'm curious.

I do think so.

Is there syntax for indicating that I want bash to interpret an expression as a command instead of just barewords?

Bob
7:00 AM
@avirk I really don't know now, sorry...
@Zach If there are no non-ASCII characters in the file, ASCII and UTF-8 are equivalent (at least on Windows)...
The files match byte-for-byte and it's up to the program opening them to pick an encoding...

7:14 AM
@Zach Could be that OS X has a different iconv. Not sure.

wouldn't OS X use a bsd userspace rather than a gnu one?

yup
you really notice it with sed and find … two entirely different programs on GNU/BSD

7:29 AM
ya

Arrrr... I'm onto you @JourneymanGeek :P

on to what? ;p

rep-wise, that is

~_~

lol
we're neck and neck, have been a while

7:33 AM
oh cheh

Yeah, pretty much all the time

XD
I'd rather get ahead of Ignacio honestly ;p

As fate would have it I'll probably never surpass you tho

@slhck: you have a few times ;p

@JourneymanGeek Start posting more one-line answers in , maybe that helps.
@JourneymanGeek Really? Didn't notice, lol

7:34 AM
++1

@slhck: You're a moving target ;p

haha

one day, i'll hit 2k rep :P

lol
I BADLY want 3k on SF

@jokerdino You have great answers, you should just post more of them
I was so happy to get 3k on SO, immediately went to the /review/close queue, saw 60k questions, said, "nah, screw that" and left

7:37 AM
yeah. if only more of them ask their ubuntu questions in SU than on AU :P

lol
@slhck: I'm actually semi active on SF
ironically I seem to mostly answer upstart questions
(since my first question there was on upstart)

heh

headesk
I just realised I confused you and DB
tho I'm still sure you had more rep than me at some point

how can you do that?

Three words
International. F***ing. Management

7:41 AM
big difference with the censor :P

Hm. There are PDFs you can't save from the browser?!

you should be able to... somehow

Its funnier with the censor

i don't see any pdf
just some jsfiddle

7:43 AM
'night folks

good night @nhinkle.

night @nhinkle!

@slhck: Are you logged into that site? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Ah. My university probably is.

ya, that would explain part of it
/me is too lazy to work out how to get his uni docs login fixed just right now

7:45 AM
haha
Ah, got it.
Used the Chrome inspector to work out the embedded PDF source, then opened that in a new tab, tadaaa
Didn't even want to figure out if this is actually an answer.

...
BURN IT
THEN BURN THE ASHES.
THEN BURN IT AGAIN

Bob
@slhck ni8?

@JourneymanGeek His a key is apparently broken.

this was really like "what is this I don't even"

whoo. feels better now :P

@Bob: there is no a in NEED ;p
excuse denied!

@JourneymanGeek Well, that sure as hell isn't from a Windows error message - the grammar is atrocious.

Perhaps.
Or maybe s/he realises Ws fs cg ao ns rt ar cg as us isn't very easy to understand.

Q: How can I get a notification whenever I visit a certain website?

ademar111190On Mac OS X I have this program which plays a sound whenever I enter a certain website, like Facebook, etc. I'd like to set up something similar on Linux. How could I do that?

Wait, how did the second one morph?

Morph?

8:04 AM
/me needs a dictionary.
I was thinking in terms of metamorphosis. Meaning, how did the second question changed. I just noted you edited the question. So, no problem now o.O

Ohhhh, found a spamming ring. Neat.

I want to see!!

Not so evident.. but..

Q: NTFS hard disk now recognized as 'RAW'

comachillyMy Windows XP was recently corrupted and my hard disk was password protected. In an effort to retrieve my old info I slaved my hard disk to a friends PC. Then there's a deleted answer suggesting some software, very low quality post, seems like copypasta

Oh. Deleted answer. :/

And then there's another user who just posted the same garbage answer on the very same post, plus two other garbage answers

8:10 AM
Looks like we don't really have to find them. They'll just fall into the trap.

Both using the same yahoo.cn e-mail.

Bob
@slhck They can't even make up a new email address?
Wait, are emails verified for unregistered users?

They're registered.

Bob
(I know it sounds like a bit of an oxymoron, verified unregistered user)
@slhck Ah. Wait, why bother registering to spam?

So it looks unsuspicious. They set up bait questions like the one I posted above.
Get some rep, so as not to fall into the review queues
Later, post the spam
They're even on photography.se

Bob
8:16 AM
psh, review queue? I just look at the active question list ;)

oh, least its smarter than the one i flagged earlier ;p

Bob
I guess it works better over at SO. More mods/high-reps, but easier for something to fall through the cracks with that rate of updating.

@slhck I actually used to do this by default, then go back and fix.
@Bob: Well, SO, by nature wouldn't get as many clever spammers

Bob
@JourneymanGeek True... dodgy programming blogs reminiscent (in a bad way) of TDWTF, anyone? :P

;p
Halfbaked SEO is boring, and probably harmless

8:22 AM
True. We have some very clever ones here.

speaking of which...

Hm. That one you just flagged, it's closed on SO anyway

@slhck: the former is copypasted from SO, I'd keep an eye on the user

> -1 down vote favorite
O.o

We've had a few cases where stuff would get copypastaed by accounts for future spamming

8:29 AM
It happens all the time, lol
Simply crossposted without looking.

@slhck: different username tho ;p

Bob
Hmmm...
I note this is copypasted from SO. Are you the same user, have the exact same problem or ... is this something else? — Journeyman Geek 22 secs ago
Next thing you know, the question has been deleted :P

Its what I'd call an anomaly
@Bob: or its the same user and we may end up needing to do a merge

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Wait, is it necessary to link accounts on different sites?

8:33 AM
O:

@Bob: if he actually creates a proper account and such... maybe

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Merging accounts on one site is obvious, but people may want to keep accounts on different sites separate - and that's probably the reason each site has its own user list...

@Bob: I mean, he may create another account with the same name

10:04 AM
@Bob any idea on how to create a virtual adapter that get connectivity from a bridge in windows 8?

Bob
@soandos Huh? Any particular reason you're asking me? :P
I've never used Win8

In windows 7 then

Q: Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

soandosI am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino ...

Its frustrating, so I wanted to see if I can create a virtual adapter for it (as far as I can tell it does not have one now)

@soandos: IIRC if you're using wireless, you're better off with NAT
i've never known bridged mode to work off wifi in my experience

@JourneymanGeek I can't change the router if that is what you mean

Bob
10:10 AM
@soandos NAT is implemented by the hypervisor, normally

for Hyper-V

I think in my case it just created a network bridge

there's usually a Nat or bridge option for guest networking

What would creating a NAT look like?

Bob
@soandos Are you looking for an actual adapter/"network connection"?

10:11 AM
not familiar with hyper-V i'm afraid

I have one that works (wifi) and a virtual one created by hyper-V
that works for windows, but I don't see one for the guest OS

Bob
VirtualBox does add a driver, and I'll provide a screenshot as soon as imgur stops acting up

should it even have one (VMware adds virtual adapters for its guests)?

Bob

Bob
10:12 AM
VirtualBox only adds an adapter for 'host-only networking' - the bridge drivers are added as an item under the LAN adapter properties.
I've never used Hyper-V, though I assume it's similar, considering Virtual PC does the same.

I guess whats bothering me is it works for wired just fine
And not at all for wireless
(@Bob hyper-V also adds a driver)

@soandos: can you gimme a screenshot of whatever you use to muck around with VM settings?

Bob
@soandos Then why are you expecting an adapter?

@Bob not sure :P
@JourneymanGeek coming right up

10:17 AM

Ok, I admittedly have no clue

current setup is something like Wifi 2 -> bridge -> last remaining enabled adapter
no idea how that was set up
(I mean it was set up by Hyper-V but I have no idea how to do it manually)
Any idea where I should look for pointers?

at this point? SU question! ;p

anything I should add?

hm
seems ok to me
upboated, and did a few small fixes ;p

10:24 AM
should be "and had the" no? ;)

prolly ;p

Bob
11:22 AM
Huh.. Would that VS question be more appropriate over at SO?
Though I guess it's not exactly off-topic here, so meh.

lol
I was actually gonna say, I wish I had VS installed so I could post a better answer.
@slhck confirmed its a real person. Feel free to mark the flag invalid ;p

Bob
Hmm.. were any i3 processors x86?

I doubt it
I don't even think there were any non 64 bit core 2 processors

Bob
11:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek I had one... I think? :P

oh? ;p

Bob
Or maybe not.

I've been known to be wrong from time to time

Bob
Definitely was running 32-bit version of Windows, can't remember the CPU model.. :\

you'd more LIKELY to have had a 64 bit proc with a 32 bit os
ya, cause 64 bit was crap until windows 7

Bob
11:40 AM
It looks like the earliest Conroes were x86-64 though, so you're probably right for Core 2 Duo.

well xp64 was crap, vista anything was steaming crap

Bob
Eh, Vista 64-bit was fine. it was crap on XP :P
@JourneymanGeek Honestly? Despite its flaws, I kinda liked Vista.
7 is definitely better, though.
