1:00 PM
When you get on today... @IvoFlipse why didn't you participate in the nominations? I thought you said you were going to.

1:20 PM
hello again, I would need your opinion and ideas.

hi @tintincute
I might be able to help you

@David: that's great. I have 3 computers but with different OS. I'm wondering how am I can I access file on each computers. I'm thinking to get NAS Server but would also like to know if its secured like no one can access on it. Would appreciate your idea.

which OSes?
also, hello btw :)

Mac, win xp, win 7, linux
I've read somewhere that I can use Samba server for linux, but not really sure how to go about it.

I can't be specific, I'm not really a Mac/Linux user, but was going to say using Samba will allow Windows to access shares on the Linux machine (possibly Mac as well) and vice versa, I think
the Win 7 will probably want home group disabled and to use normal file sharing

1:35 PM
Yeah, I'm not a Mac user... sorry
I would have to agree with @DMA57361 (hi @DMA57361)

@David: but are you good in Linux?

But I've used a Samba installed on a test Ubuntu server install to allow updates from a Win7 machine via network shares without any problems

eh
I'm ok
I might need a cheat sheet up
I set up a Linux web server once
No GUI

Is it safe?

Linux? Probably the safest

1:37 PM
or do you mean Samba?

What does it mean no GUI? Do you need a GUI if you set up a web server?
setting webserver via Linux

Well some people like to cheat with a GUI
I wanted to learn
So I restricted myself from using the GUI

can you give me examples of GUI please?

What are you currently using as an OS?

@tintincute GUI = Graphical User Interface; not having one implies command line only

1:38 PM
you mean now?

yeah

win 7

ok
The entire Win 7 screen is a GUI

@DMA57361: thanks. Yes I know the meaning of GUI but can't picture what is it.

If you don't have a GUI, your screen will be black with only text

1:39 PM
@tintincute it's pretty much everything that's not command line

kind of like having a full screened command prompt

@David: Is it the same like, if I'm using Mac so the screen is a GUI

yes

@David: ah ok I get it. Thanks

no problem @tintincute

1:40 PM
Oh my... I really have to refresh what I've learned from school. My brain got rusty...my bad!

It's ok

so if I use linux now as my web server, how can I install Samba? Can I just install it from the site?

Windows has a newer server OS that is called Server 2008 Core
well @tintincute
you would need to get the package

Ok, I guess I need to be in front of my Linux when I do that.

and install from that package after you unpackage it (I can't think of the term)

1:42 PM
It's not easy if I'm imagining here. I've heard about this package.
@David: I have to check this at home. My Linux is at home.

o
ok

Next question: what would be your recommendation is connecting these 4 PC's

There are a lot of sites that will tell you how to install and setup Samba on a Linux server.
Which flavor of Linux do you have?
Ubuntu?

flavor?
ah yes Ubuntu

k

1:44 PM
Not sure which version I have to check
I'm thinking how to set-up the 4
I mean 4 computers.

@tintincute is one of them a "server" or are all for general use?

oh, thanks I know this site.

sudo apt-get install samba smbfs will get the package for you

@DMA57361: I'm not sure if I understand your question.
@David: will take note of this.

1:45 PM
k

@tintincute what are the computers used for? why do you need to share the files? this will affect what setup's will be better than others

That command will also install the samba package

@DMA57361: I used it for work and personal.
win 7 & win xp for work. Mac is for me. Linux is for playing.

Yeah, but for what type of files and to where @tintincute. (i.e. large files such as movies, small files such as txt docs, across the internet, through your LAN only)

I'm thinking that I might use win xp as media player where I can connect it to a TV, and then I can access files from NAS Server where I saved the movies, music and photos.
Ok, I have large files for example documents, excel files for work.
And also Movies, Music,

1:49 PM
k, and are you trying to FTP these across the internet or just through your LAN?
I think that would help @DMA57361's question

hmm, FTP i used it when I connect to my website didn't know that you can use this too for connection PC's?
How do you do this then with FTP?

Well if you are "sharing files"

At the moment, 3 PC's are connected through LAN that is with cables right?
and then the Mac is wireless.

You could have all of your files at a central location (the linux server) and access them through the other machines

with Mac I use wi-fi
@David: so that means I don't need NAS Server?

1:51 PM
That is fine, a LAN is a Local Area Network which can be wireless or by cables connecting to a router

But then, I need to have big space in my Linux PC right?

Well... NAS being a Network Accessable Storage could be an FTP server

Yes you will need a lot of storage on your Linux server (enough space to fit everything and have some overhead)

and how would this work with LAN?

1:53 PM
Well the other computers would need a client FTP program
the Linux server would need the server FTP program
they would communicate

@David not always @David, you can get hard drive setups that work on a LAN as NAS, providing a Windows share etc

the file permissions would then dictate what the users could see

Alright, I get it. The Linux server doesn't have enough space and this is almost at end. It has windows before a friend of mine installed Linux because he said it will start quickly.

Yes, that is true @DMA57361
I was thinking something easy from a Linux standpoint

@David fair enough

1:54 PM
Sure you could just have a lot of storage on your Win 7 box
and then install a FTP server program on it

my win 7 is a laptop

and make your Windows 7 box into an FTP server easily
You can do a lot of things

How do you do that?

@David @DMA57361: Are you always here?

1:56 PM
I am during the week usually around this time
Not always, but you know
I do this for a hobby

ditto

Ok. Because I need to be in front of my PC so that I can check the right settings.
I'm not at home now.

(@DMA57361 is better than me...)

Thanks for the link will check this later.

k

1:57 PM
but if you have 4 PC's like me how are you going to set-it up?

@David lol, surely depends which metrics you use :P

I'm also not sure what cables do I need to buy...

probably FTP through windows 7
You don't need to buy anything
no cables

no?

you already have a LAN setup
do you not?

1:58 PM
no not at the moment.
I am moving to a new flat.
Bringing with me this 4 PC's

All 4 of your machines are connected to a router
so that they get internet???

so that means I have to buy a cable for each right?

no
wireless counts as a LAN too

Ok
but I will start from scratch, because I am moving to a new flat

well

1:59 PM
LAN = Local Area Network

that means I will buy a router for me and then this 4 PC's

@David I don't think @IvoFlipse needs to participate... Or did he plan to do it just for fun? :D

WAN = Wide Area Network

@ChrisF: it's kind of you, thanks for the defi... yes I know the meaning of this.

Sorry

2:00 PM
@TomWij I thought he said he was going to setup his nomination...

no not at all. don't be. I appreciate it

So... @tintincute just get all four PCs on the internet through the router
then you will have your LAN setup

ok so I have 4 PC and a router with me, not yet connected and I have to start from scracth, I haven't done this before.

some people don't know that they have a LAN setup when they do

ok with wired and wireless it really doesn't matter right?

2:01 PM
correct

lol, yeah just like me;-)

yup
:)
Connect your router to your modem

@David Ivo's still going to be a moderator, the current lot don't get booted out by the new guys, if that's what you mean

ok so I guess I need to have it set-up first and have all of them connect to the internet. Then I'll see what else do I need.

I don't know, I thought he was going to set up a nomination for fun to see the votes roll in
Yes @tintincute that would be a good idea

2:03 PM
@ALL: thanks for the help ;-)

Please, put a password on your wireless router @tintincute!

@David It might have been when it wasn't clear that the existing mods didn't have to reapply.

yes I will

no problem @tintincute
o ok @ChrisF that makes sence

but I've heard even if you put password on it. Some can still crack it and connect to your router
is that true?

2:04 PM
If they're determined enough.

yeah... but the likeliness of someone hacking a non protected router over a protected router is slim to none. err... wait. otherway around

@ChrisF: yes I know someone who can crack any secured router connection

Use WPA(2) NOT WEP for the wireless encryption and it will be a lot harder

You know what I mean

ok WPA2 is more secure?

2:06 PM
Also even if yours has a weak password they'll go for the one next door without a password as it's easier to get in :)

WPA2 is good. Also setup a nice key(pass phrase) for it with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special number.
WPA2 is much more secure

ok. I'm doing that all the time.

The difference is amazing

is there any other than WPA 2 ?
i mean which is more secure than WPA2

I could go spend 5 minutes hacking a WEP, but it would take me a couple of hours to hack a WPA2
well... yeah

2:07 PM
Is there WPA5?

I know it's security through obscurity but don't broadcast your SSID either. If the casual observer doesn't know your wireless is there they won't try to get in

example of SSID? is it the name you use for your wireless connection?

No there is not WPA5
yes @tintincute

can you hide SSID?

yes

2:08 PM
@David: is it only until WPA2?

there is probably a setting for that in the page
Well the 2 means something
I'm not quite sure though

what does it mean?

I could look it up

oh i can look it up in the net
thanks David you're kind. It's ok I will look it up
last question: What's the best router to buy?

hmm...

2:09 PM
netgear?

WTR something
Linksys
no
They are backed by Cisco

I thought netgear is the best?

nope
I wouldn't get a netgear
Do you shop at BestBuy too? LOL
Please don't tell me you use Macafee or Norton

No. I shop usually where I can get the products online. For example, HP, I go to their site directly

Ok Cool...

2:11 PM
So if I want to buy Netgear then I would go to their website.

I go to Newegg.com

No not Mcafee or Norton-

good

what do you have then?
Is it cheap in Newegg.com?

I use MSE for windows boxes
They are pretty good

2:12 PM
is it free?

yeah
search MSE download

ok didn't know that. I have Kaspersky
I already did. Saw it just now. Thanks

np

ok tell me why netgear is not good?

People just have bad luck with them. They stop working sooner. They are more expensive when it comes to quality to price
long list of things
it's kind of like what knife do you buy? an old case, or a new SpyderCo?

2:16 PM
ok. if I buy Linksys which one are you going to recommend? I want something very fast...
SpyderCo knives are they the most expensive knives?

let me look
They are the ones US cops use
WRT160N is a very nice and affordable router

is this the new one?

It is N, so it has a stronger signal with good range
No
It's one that is proven to be very good

It's been out for a few years now

2:19 PM
is this the one you're using now?

No, I wish
I'm too cheap
I'm using two wireless router that need to be restarted all the time
I am actually thinking about buying that one though

Ok. How is the security of this?
Well it looks nice.

Well, security is kind of standard for most routers

It cost 92$ in my area. Not bad!

You can choose from WEP, WPA or WPA2
Yeah it is dirt cheap for quality

2:21 PM
I will order this one

look at the price there

I got a gift from someone netgear router and its 56Kbps
Oh my why it is very cheap?

LOL
just because it has been out for a while

Do newegg.com ship to Eu?

I'm not sure
This goes 300Mbps
which would be 300,000kbps

2:23 PM
what about Super-G?
I've heard this is the fastest

?
N is better than G

Yeah
Ok...

I know this from experience

is it then Super-N?

there isn't a Super N

2:24 PM
I have never heard of people saying super
Hi @Sathya

it was earlier known as Draft-N since the specs weren't finalized
hi @David

so if I buy a router with N, how will I say or order that, just N router?

yes.

this is also cool: Cisco Linksys E3000

2:26 PM
yeah

@Sathya: thanks

np @tintincute

Yeah, I have seen that before too and was debating between the two, but chose the WRT160N.

this one is cool too: Cisco Valet Plus

but they do about the same thing
they are just 2 times as much money

2:29 PM
:-)

Who thinks I will make it to the elections?

well the top 10 out of 11 will be going forward

:D

lol

Sorry Joe...
You are the weakest link
GOOD BYE!

2:39 PM
well, there's still 3 days of voting left .. you never know what'll happen :P

He's over 35 points behind the next lowest candidate and has no upvotes at all. I can't see him overturning that.

A: Voting as a proxy for moderator quality

KronoSEven though I am a candidate in the elections, I will step back and give you my unbiased (as far as candidates go) opinion on what I will be looking for in candidates. Ultimately, however who I feel is a good candidate and who you feel may be different. What you (and everyone else) need to do i...

indeed

well I took the pluge to answer that loaded question...
may hurt me... but I feel that some candidates deserve a better "light" on things...

@KronoS nice reply

2:42 PM
Voting on candidates is locked in the same was as normal - which I suppose is to be expected. However I've changed my mind about a candidate and want to change my vote. I can't really ask them to edit their election address as that would indicate who I voted for. Hmm..

Yeah, Maybe I should watch out for Joe, he might come back and whoop me @DMA57361 and @ChrisF

@ChrisF tricky situation

@ChrisF privately invite to a chat? or see if you can email?

Actually I'm not sure that the election address can still be modified. @David or @Sathya would you mind trying to edit yours

Lemme try @ChrisF

2:44 PM
It can... nhinkle made changes last night

that was before primaries, right @KronoS

no after @Sathya @ChrisF

If you can't edit then that's a problem. I see a question on MSO coming up

I just did a (trivial) edit @ChrisF

so can i...
gotta go and take the wife to work and go to school my self...

2:46 PM
I'll see if I can change my vote (temporarily)

wonder who'd be the bloke who downvoted my nomination :D

@Sathya that worked. I could remove (and then readd my vote). I just need to get the candidate in question to edit their address.

So I noticed
now how'd you get the candidate to edit their nomination

I might still ask on MSO though.

2:52 PM
@Sathya I don't know. There have been a couple of suggestions.

on MSO ? @ChrisF

Meta Stack Overflow.

Q: I can't undo or change my vote in the primary election phase.

ChrisFI've cast my votes in both the Stack Overflow and Super User primaries, but I've changed my mind about one of the votes I cast. I tried to revoke the vote but was told that the vote was locked (as is expected as the nominations are effectively answers). If the candidate edits his nomination I c...

Q: Are the (soon to be) newly elected Stack Overflow moderators Meta Stack Mod?

KronoSAs it seems that Meta Stack Overflow is a bit different from all of the other Meta sites, I was wondering if the election of moderators is the same. With other sites, if a Mod is elected he/she is also the Meta Mod as well. Is this the same with Stack Overflow Mod's? If so, I find that this ma...
