merged his accounts @DMA57361

@IvoFlipse ta. I'm sure we had a discussion about similar problems earlier at some point and couldn't remember if you said you couldn't fix them or not at the moment; thought I'd flag anyway

this guy actually made another account
the others didn't have their accounts associated

oic, as opposed to unclaimed mirgrated accounts? -- yep you beat me to it :)

@IvoFlipse Here you go, mine is very similiar to this. Also, it's K50AF, they misspelled it in the sticker.

@IvoFlipse so you can merge accounts but not associate them?

12:06 PM
is going to cinema. Returning after some hours. Bye! :)

if someone uses a different OpenID between SO and SU and his question get's migrated
he has an account that doesn't exist here nor has any associated OpenID

hello @DMA57361

@Sathya hey

interestingly @Nyuszika7H they aren't just media keys but also your keypad keys

12:27 PM
woppa, 51% growth in December alone :O
Actually that was for this graph
StackExchange as a whole is now the size of SU

nice

but we're among the bad boys when it comes to answered questions

yes, but so are SO and SF

don't worry, at least your edging out SF

though I suspect the amount of abandoned questions is about 10% of that
I'm not worried in the least

12:30 PM
@IvoFlipse grumble, grumble

@IvoFlipse ...where'd you get 50% from? - yeah, the second graph, nm

go count the page views on those unanswered ones and they often won't even have 1% of our average page views

@DMA57361 the blog post

Posted by Joel Spolsky on January 24th, 2011

2010 was an absolutely amazing year here at Stack Overflow. We grew from 7 million visitors to over 16 million, putting us in Quantcast’s top 400. We raised $6 million in venture capital, and we went from three full time employees to 27. We built a 7500 square foot office in New York, and we launched a ton of new features and sites, like Stack Exchange, a network of 33 Q&A sites on diverse topics from cooking to computer science. Stack Exchange grew 51% in December alone. Wow.

The expert Q&A model that Stack Overflow pioneered is really working. The statistic I’m proudest of is the percentage of questions that get a good answer, over 80% (and many of the new Stack Exchange sites have 100% answer rates!) …

more worrying is the low percentage on WA

@IvoFlipse They have the exact same problem as SU

12:32 PM
people asking for things that don't exist?
It's almost amazing SO's percentage is actually so high, with that many visitors

claiming to support an incredibly broad area (all non-game personal computer software/hardware, all web apps)

yup :)
but I'm still of the opinion that that in itself is not the reason a question can't be answered

that you don't have the 1000's of experts that would really require?

most of the questions are about the big guys anyway
and I think a lot of the unanswered question are exactly about those tools

@IvoFlipse "those tools"

12:36 PM
they go about asking why on earth can't I hide this one icon in my Windows system tray
don't tell me nobody uses Windows
but why on earth would you want to do that?!?
If I got a close reason: to freaking stupid to try, I could surely up our percentage ;P
though 20% of all our questions is a hell of a job...

@IvoFlipse It's called Not a Real Question :-)

well they argue that it's perfectly fine to ask it
even though it's bullshit
but I guess I could use that reason to close a lot of the old and abandoned questions
though the team will tell me: why bother?

it's noise? it's broken windows?

we just need something to motivate users to get out there and add answers and/or upvote answers to those in the "unanswered questions" list
what though, I've no idea... :)

well I don't think that's really worth the effort
rather invest in the newer questions that somebody still cares about

12:42 PM
for the most part I agree

but I would want to cut away the dead wood

possibly a "too localised" closing spree is needed

I do love a good closing spree. Too bad I have (relatively) no rep here

perhaps we can propose a new query for the review tools

@IvoFlipse Old and broken?

12:45 PM
abandoned?

The broken windows theory is a criminological theory of the normsetting and signalling effects of urban disorder and vandalism on additional crime and anti-social behavior. The theory states that monitoring and maintaining urban environments in a well-ordered condition may prevent further vandalism as well as an escalation into more serious crime. The theory was introduced in a 1982 article by social scientists James Q. Wilson and George L. Kelling. Since then it has been subject to great debate both within the social sciences and in the public debate. The theory has been used as a motiv...

like: 0 views in x time, 0 votes in x time and unanswered, user who asked not logged in for x time
and we could even go as far as to delete any question without upvoted stuff in it
brb

@IvoFlipse don't tempt me :-s
> when was the last time you met a programmer who didn’t use “El Stack"
lemme introduce Spolsky to my colleagues..

Mine as well
I work with a bunch of COBOL programmers
half of whom aren't even touch typists

ooooh COBOL

12:51 PM
yes, it does still exist
it's in probably every fortune 500 company

Indeed

they didn't buy the dot.com bubble and survived you mean @CRoss? :P

I mean they've had serious computer software since before the dot com bubble

anyway, time for grocery shopping :(

@IvoFlipse have fun!

Wil
1:12 PM
@Sathya This is a long shot and not sure you can help... My dad's laptop has broken in Malaysia and it will cost me more to buy/build and send it than him just getting one there - He went to a shop and the majority seem to be older stock or over priced (which is shocking considering they have had a tiny journey, and meant to be low/no tax)... As India is near-ish, I was just wondering if there are any international type chains that I can take a look at online... Google doesn't
seem to really help me and I am pretty stuck... at the moment, I am looking at Dell which seem to the best bet, although not so happy... but at least he will be safe/warranty etc.

@Wil I was just wondering if there are any international type chains that I can take a look at online --> sorry @Wil there are none :(
I think Dell is your best bet @Wil

Wil
What I feared - I sort of enjoyed the fact that supermarkets haven't ruined the high street like they have in England, but at the same time, there are just so many stalls/little shop sellers, and it is almost as if there is a conspiracy/price fixing - all seem overpriced and the cheap ones are just (very) old stock
Back to comparing Dell for him then! Thanks.

1:31 PM
@Wil No probs, sorry I couldn't help you further

1:47 PM
Hello peoples

howdy

The future looks bright for you @DMA57361...

re moderation I assume you mean?

yes

realistically - we can't really tell. Anyone at 150 rep will be able to vote; and most of them haven't been involved in any discussions so far to gauge thier voting tendencies
and the competition is strong

2:00 PM
Other than me :(
O well... At least I tried.

well, you'll hopefully at least beat Joe

:D

a shame he's there really. without him we wouldn't need to go through the primaries
hmmm... it's only just dawned on me that Sathya is the only user with more than 10K rep to run

@David you have some really good qualities to you just need a little more experience...
esp meta

2:16 PM
@David howdy

howdy @Sathya
Can't view a single page? Here's how to troubleshoot it on the Question of the Week via #SuperUserBlog http://bit.ly/i142T8

2:30 PM
hi @Sathya
Yeah, I agree @KronoS
Maybe someday...

@KronoS neat
(yet to have a look at the page though)

3:15 PM
good job @KronoS :)

1 hour later…
4:24 PM
@IvoFlipse, @Sathya
this is a possible spammer...
look at the search above:

what makes you think that?

look at the google search...

scratch that, you're absolutely right :)

same question exact wording on multiple sites

do you still have a link to his question?
I merged him into Deposit, forgot to delete the question

nvm, the flags took care of it :)
interesting catch :)

anyway, m'off home, cya all laterish

i actually felt bad at first thinking his question was getting closed cuz of his wording... but once I searched... ya... didn't feel bad at all @IvoFlipse

cya laterish
I get that a lot
sometimes I pity them, just for the context of their question

@IvoFlipse here's another concerning account... look at the questions he's asked and the quality... body of question is typically the same as the title... and there are multiple dupes as well
ok nvm... he's made some comments so I'm going to assume that he's not spamming... just uneducated with SU's site at the moment :)

4:37 PM
I had some interaction with him on this question he responded so I assume he did care about the out come. superuser.com/questions/236094/…
@KronoS how do you guys link questions like that?

copy the full address @Kyle

I pity the fool

lol

That is what I thought I did with the last one... I guess not.

JohnI installed Medisoft Patient Accounting Demo but every time I try to run it, I get this error: tblExclusiveNew: One of the Database property or the AdsConnection property must have a value. I don't think you have the http:// part... that may make the difference

ahh
thanks

well... It's time for class... I'll be back in an hour

Bye, thanks again for the help @kronos

@IvoFlipse btw, always meant to ask, what's deposit :-s

4:43 PM
no prob

:-s

it's what we use to count scalps
gnoupi and random started it to count all the spam users they found
we merged them into one, so we could still keep track of IPs and things they spammed

5:00 PM
That account has quite the "temporary" suspension: May 4, 2084.. lol

This is a weird UI, with the scrollbar all the way on the right, controlling the pane on the left

@IvoFlipse ah
@davr ?

5:28 PM
Today my roommate got to level 85 in WOW. Today I hit 6400 rep on #SuperUser. Whose addiction is more productive? @codinghorror

@nhinkle did you want a sneak peak behind the mod tools?

@IvoFlipse, sure. I've only got about 20 minutes though, then I'm off to class

Gmail didn't put @RebeccaChernoff's mail in the Priority Inbox :( reply to her went delayed by almost 24hrs 'coz of that.

@Sathya, you need to get your priorities straight! Mine went straight to priority inbox

@nhinkle I don't know how that was missed :(
that plus my travels meant I almost deleted it :O

5:33 PM
You could set up a filter so anything@stackoverflow.com gets marked automatically important

yeah, so far all mail from SO were automatically put into Priority. dunno how this missed. Anyhow marked as priority

Wil
@Sathya / @IvoFlipse was this an email just for people who are participating in the election?

@Wil yep

Wil
ok, thanks

Q: 2011 Moderator Elections - Town Hall Chat

Rebecca ChernoffIn connection with the moderator elections, we will be holding a Town Hall Chat session with the candidates. This will be an opportunity for members of the community to pose questions to the candidates on the topic of moderation. Participation is completely voluntary. I am working with the can...

@Wil
@Wil Feel free to Grill me :P

5:44 PM
@IvoFlipse Was just the /review path, looked through the top bad quality answers of the last year.

Wil
don't mean to sound silly, but isn't this taking it a little too far!

@TomWij you mean the filtered ones.

what answers @TomWij? ;P

apparently not @Wil

5:48 PM
Well, you said "nice spots @TomWij all those -5 posts :P", so I said how I spotted them. And yes, the answers would be gone now...
Or if you mean that the link loads slow, yeah... It's a big query.

someone should put up a meta proposal for a review query
with which we find abandoned questions, that have too few votes, views and no or few upvoted answers
then we would just go about and deleting/closing those
and get SU's percentage of unanswered crap up

@IvoFlipse true
'll catch ya'll later. have a good day/afternoon/evening folks

later @Sathya :)
and I would be talking: a year of nearly no activity and no value
USA Today: Q&A websites like Quora and Stack Exchange take off http://usat.ly/eUhgzb #news
> Stack Overflow is the latest to join the fray on the heels of new Silicon Valley darling Quora.
those guys have it backwards

6:04 PM
howdy again all

hey @DMA57361

@IvoFlipse cool @ivo
hmm it posted twice, I suck at chat.

no worries @Kyle :)

I have to get used to enter sending and not adding page breaks.

lol the Stack exchange twitter account RTed me :P

6:09 PM
lol nice.

@Sathya wow, ta for the heads up, my copy got junked - only just noticed it thanks to this :/

6:24 PM
what would be the best way to find out when those graphs go back to zero?
I tried looking up the index of the first minimal value, but turns out two of the graphs start at zero :\

Try calculating after a certain time @IvoFlipse... for example all data after 10 seconds...
or even 5...

@IvoFlipse why not just ignore all zero's until the first non-zero value and then consider zero's valid - but could be an issue if the graph starts with a "double-dip" effect...

I'm afraid of putting in hardcoded percentages @KronoS, you never know what messed up dog I'll get that only touches the ground for like 5% of the measurement

@IvoFlipse man they got this article all wrong

I guess @DMA57361's suggestion is a little more secure
It seems the Stack Exchange twitter account is followed by quite a lot of users

6:29 PM
over 900 @IvoFlipse

they also forgot to mention that even Super User is larger than Quora

I've never heard of Quora.

and that Quora doesn't really seem to be user friendly... I just tried signing up... didn't really like the whole thing

there are some things to like, some to dislike

I just wanted to view the layout

6:33 PM
@IvoFlipse did you see that Joe repsonded to all the comments on his nom?

his poorly spelled and formatted one, yes

You know... I feel like I should feel bad for him...

argh, I hate how integers aren't floats when you want them to be :P
0.4 != 0.0 ffs

lol
yeah, Python catches me out with that occasionally, I'm still very used to a variable being one type at staying that type

ah putting float around it helped
I had one toe that started with 0.4, so I just said if it starts with 0, calculate when it get's zero starting where it no longer is zero

6:46 PM
indeed, just force them

but then it shouldn't start rounding them :P

depends on what you do with them - something must of nudged it into an integer

oh, now I found the problem
what do I do when something never reaches zero (because it's been sliced out)
does the hurting ever stops? :P
well ill take a break for now

@IvoFlipse then the "zero" is the item one past the end of the array, surely?

it is, but that's not in the array
I guess I could say something like: if argmin() == 0, take index [-1]

6:51 PM
does it need to be? what are you using the value for?

I want to calculate some intervals during a roll off
that occur in every dog
but first I have to go now, be back in 30 or so

so, for intervals you only need the different between two index points? not the array values?
@IvoFlipse that's ok then, gives me an excuse to leave the conversation as well to make some dinner ;P

7:20 PM
Name of this room should be Sneak PeEk, not peAk..
peak is a mountain haha - sneak mountain!

oh right

Lol @studiohack

*room topic changed to SU Mod Sneek Peak: *

hahahahahaha!
so, what are your favorite mountains? topic has been changed to sneak peaks

my only excuse would be that I have other things on my mind

7:22 PM
yah, that's understandable

Yours must be Brokeback :P
mine is in Yosemite

I want to visit Yosemite sometime - the Half Dome is the basis of the North Face logo

Mines a little dinky one near safford ... The grahams

nice...

lol... discussing mountains... :/

7:23 PM
just got the easter egg, some paper clip
how did I get that?

you mean this half dome? :P

yes, that's what I said @IvoFlipse

@studiohack I think @ivoflipse is trying to show off

or that one? ;P

hmmmm yes. @IvoFlipse: are these your photos?

7:25 PM
anyway, if you don't have any more questions regarding the mod tools, we might as well move to RA

@IvoFlipse: or this mountain: nps.gov/bica/index.htm

26 messages moved from SU Mod Sneek Peak
the grand canyon isn't really a mountain @studiohack

it is the reverse of a peak.
have you seen the Grand Tetons?

@IvoFlipse are the top two the grand canyon as well?

@IvoFlipse
no @Kyle: the Yosemite NP
this one is a different canyon - a better picture of the one I linked.

7:33 PM
Funny thing... Lived in AZ my whole life... Never been to the grand canyon

wow, I have always wanted to go :(

yeah...

Are these all pics you guys took?

not the ones I linked - but they are great places that I want to visit...

I know @ivoflipse's are his own

7:37 PM
is that him in his photo?
@KronoS, @IvoFlipse

I'm green with envy.. makes me realize how much I need a vacation.

yeah

can't you compare it with my avatar @studiohack?
I like Zion better
and my GF liked Bryce more

heard of both, but never been to them.
it's hard to tell @IvoFlipse, your avatar and your photo at Yosemite don't really match...lighting, age, etc

Zion is an awesome place... Only driven through though I want to go back packin or camping there sometime

7:39 PM
and what is the temp in that photo, why are you wearing a coat @IvoFlipse?

because it was pretty cold, think 15 degrees and windy
also this was at about 5 PM so just before sunset
and you're at 8000 feet up there
@studiohack: here's our small road trip
hmm not found, that's strange

Wow. Small road trip?

if you were ever planning on doing something like this, my advice is just to go out and do it

7:54 PM
I have been, getting time off is very hard in a company with only 4 people on the IT staff.
Even when I'm off I'm still working.
