12:00 AM
Hello there, SU chat.

Sorry @studiohack, no clue.
Welcome @LordTorgamus.

Hello there, @LordTorgamus.
How are you?

12:17 AM
Ah @nhinkle, you're here. :-)

Briefly. I need to go do a bunch of chem studying soon. How are you?

Fine, am thinking of writing another community FAQ now, want to write a big or helpful answer.
Dunno what topic though...
Perhaps something interesting to the users in a more broad way

I just turned a question into one (see feed auto entry above), feel free to contribute
I'm trying to think what a good topic would be.
A bunch of screenshot questions were recently tagged community-faq-proposed. Maybe you would take the one with the best info for Windows, the best for OS X, and best for cross-platform, and make each of those into a really super good one

12:36 AM
Ah, nice idea too, will go through all the questions there and go on a formatting + quality content madness... :-)
Currently going through the top questions to get an idea.
Bringing up some good memories...

Q: The ghost of icons past, should I pray to Saint William?

Kenneth CochranI am fortnightly (or an approximation thereof) visited by the ghosts of icons, long departed. These apparitions only reveal themselves momentarily after I've logged in then vanish. Returning from whence they came. I've investigated their history and found no clues as to why they continue to haun...

12:58 AM
Err, want to write something informative but don't know about what topic. Seems I'll have to improve existing questions instead...
But anyhow, it's getting late... Good night, people. :-)

every time I show up, every one is going to bed. :P
@TomWij: its all good, asked my question at Server Fault, and I think I need a new NIC.

is that some sort of crazy portable stove @MarkSzymanski?

@nhinkle: It's a turntable.

3:05 AM
@MarkSzymanski - you around?

@Mark: look at my edit and compare with Kev's. I didn't edit/touch the word 'reinstall'. I just added some formatting and separated the sentences...is that okay?

Oh. Sorry. I thought that the asker said "install"
I misread it, sorry.

Not exactly sure* what you're referring to, except that I made a small assumption to separate the sentences...does that create confusion?

3:06 AM
its all good, thanks for correcting just in case! :)

Oh, and I've seen the term "OP" used around the site. Do you know what that means?
Like in comments and such.

original poster

Ah, ok. Thanks.

usually refers to the author of a post

3:08 AM
anytime...have a good evening!

Thanks! You too!

3:31 AM
Goodnight, everyone.

night @MarkSzymanski

9 hours later…

Hi! We really need separators for Chrome! Currently, I'm using a bookmark like this:
> Name: (none)
> URL: javascript:;
Still, it isn't the best.

hi @Nyuszika7H

hi @Sathya and @Nyuszika7H

@Sathya @IvoFlipse Hi!

here for a short time, will be off in another 10 mins

I'm trying to gather results for my upcoming presentation
so need to run all my scripts again, to pick images that show my problems the best way

12:26 PM
I like UxStyle core! It only modifies the uxtheme.dll, themeui.dll and themeservice.dll in the memory, so the original files are kept untouched on the disk.

you should post a screenshot in chat, you're making me curious about what you're doing!

@Nyuszika7H: Oh, interesting. I like using sfc /scannow as a maintenance step, but it places those files back... :-)
It probably doesn't work for bootres.dll?

@TomWij, if the zerg sends out his overlords all over the map for map control, there's no queen to protect it. So vikings would easily kill them

12:42 PM
@IvoFlipse: Zerg players don't tend to send all overlords

even if you kill two, 200 minerals is a set back
that could have been nearly 3 early roaches
and you're getting supply blocked
it might prevent him from expanding when he wanted to

Look at it from the Terran side, you're spending 150 min 75 gas to kill 200 minerals.
And during the time you search for the overlords your opponent has build a sufficient counter.

that's saying the viking is never useful
but your point was the medivac wouldn't work because the zerg has map control
zerg won't have map control at 6 minutes without moving overlords all over the place

Xal Naga Towers + 2 Overlords is sufficient
By the time you drop (given 6 minutes you start flying) he can have ~8 roaches.

then you don't drop
or you pick them up again

12:49 PM
It's an option if the queen didn't took down the medivac

it should be a harass not a kamikaze mission

Yeah, but harassing doesn't work if your opponent scouts you doing it and has the necessary defense units nearby.

yes, but now you're assuming I'm going to do it anyway if I get scouted
but not trying to harass is even worse, as it also serves as scouting from my side

Well, you can go back and form a M/M/M army, as sth suggests.

yes, but he suggest that 'rushes' won't work at all, due to the distance. My point is that a medivac helps you with the distance part. All other arguments still hold off course

12:55 PM
True, you can try to and go back, but at a certain time it doesn't pay off if he sees you every time, places anti-air and has units nearby...
But as I said "Medivacs drop aren't bad, if you can avoid getting seen or catch him off-guard you'll surprise him."

placing anti-air costs him minerals, which can be useful if you're very matched in skill

A: How can my input element receive onclick events when it is set to disabled?

Nyuszika7HYou could wrap the input field inside a container and bind the click event on it. <div id='input-container'> <input id='myText' disabled /> </div> <script> $('#input-container').click(function() { alert('test'); }); </script> http://jsfiddle.n...

sorry my Javascript skills are nonexistent, so can't judge if you're correct

75 minerals for a evo chamber, 75 minerals for a spore crawler, compare it to 100 mins 100 gas for a medivac

btw @TomWij, I finished another bunch of hard achievements, getting closer to the end now :)
a medivac is hardly ever wasted

12:58 PM
@IvoFlipse: Nice

@IvoFlipse There's a jsFiddle demo, so you can check it out yourself. :P

some were so stupid, you had to survive with Zeratul and 3 stalkers
I made it with 6, but because Zeratul ran into the portal too quick, the last ones didn't count
the last time I just made the stalkers blink into the portal and zeratul when they were all in
btw @TomWij any idea how to calculate that principal axis in my SO question?

@Nyuszika7H: Why doesn't he make it readonly instead?

I think the process went something along the lines of: make every non-zero sensor of equal size, then for each row calculate where it balances around and fit a linear line through it

@IvoFlipse What do you mean by principal axis?

1:02 PM

@TomWij It doesn't look like disabled.

Oh, in the image, one moment.

woops: local geometric inertial axis method
that's what it's called

@Nyuszika7H: Can't that effect be reached through css?

1:04 PM
@TomWij Yes it can be, but it's not exactly like disabled.

@Nyuszika7H: It sounds more logic to make something read only and adjust it's styling rather than making something disabled and make it click-able afterwards.
@IvoFlipse: No, seems like advanced physics to me...

luckily I have the matlab scripts from the guy who's phd that's from
having a look now
that explains all the y's and x's in there :)
ah well, I guess I'll have to ask him this week

1:20 PM
The only thing I recognize is that Inertia is a rotation. xD

well what it defines is a line, around which the entire surface could balance, where the moments of both halves cancel each other out so to speak

1:42 PM
afternoon all

hi @DMA57361

Hi again!

just a brief stop for now
obfuscation is still at the top of the hotness board? nice

the family needs time too right?

@IvoFlipse indeed; off to see wife's parents in a little while

1:46 PM
I managed to avoid that ;P
she's watching Little Britain USA now
and I'm trying to gather some nice pics for my presentation

@IvoFlipse for the dog walk analysis?

yeah, I have a meeting with my previous employer and the clinic
need to show them the results so far

how soon is this?

wednesday, but I have a meeting on tuesday, so have to finish it now

feeling confident?

1:50 PM
I have all the screenshots I shared on chat, but I need some better examples to show why some things didn't work
oh yeah, the calculations work most of the time

fair enough

the rest either means I have to create a GUI to make it easier or they'll have to pay me to improve the calculations

I see, the end result of the presentation will be a decision on the future of the project then, essentially?

and I'm hoping the clinic will want to hire me for a follow up

1:52 PM
pretty much, it's like a milestone for the project
if there's nothing else I have to do, I only need to write the report, so they don't have to pay back the grant :P
and I hope my previous employer is impressed enough that he wants me to look at human measurements next

well, good luck

thanks, I could use it :)
I'm confident, but that doesn't mean things will go as planned

indeed
@Nyuszika7H didn't Chrome pass Acid3 a while back?

@DMA57361 It did, Chrome 8 canary passed that, but later it didn't got 100/100, at least for me.

ah, fair enough, doesn't make much odds anyway really :)

2:00 PM
oeh! the 2500k should be in stock now :D

hehe, still not finished building that PC yet then?

well not if the hardware isn't available
darn those jerks increased with 30 euro's

ouch, that's a bit of a pig
I really need to get a new case to transplant mine in to
the current one's really quite small and cramped

that sounds familiar
in my previous case, I couldn't add more HDDs as it didn't fit with my power supply of the GPU

last time I "upgraded", my previous machine still had an AGP slot (this was ~2.5yrs ago...) so I bought a pre-built machine rather than being bothered to upgrade all the components, but since I opened the new one up for repairs recently I've noticed it's really a tiny case

2:08 PM
yeah, they aren't designed for upgrades
perhaps simply buy another pre-built one

naa

especially when they come with Windows and such, it can be much cheaper

since I've had to fork out for replacement parts already, and have an upgrade route for my CPU, I think trying to keep this one going a while will be useful
@IvoFlipse a very good point, my current Win 7 license is a student copy so it didn't jump to mind

I built this computer almost 5 years ago, added a GPU and HDD
then when I C2D came out I bought a new cpu, found out the sockets weren't compatible (silly me)
had to buy a new mobo and got a big ass case with water cooling to go along with it
replaced my PSU when I got yet another HDD and my 10k rpm drive died on me
so by now only 1 HDD and my disk drives are original :P
the rest has been replaced over time
and you know I got the 460GTX + more RAM + a SSD last time
so now it's time for the CPU refresh again :P

lol
that was my sort of pattern until daughter came along and the money was needed elsewhere :)
I think my previous desktop (which I still have) has it's original floppy drive, but nothing else original

2:13 PM
well since I'm self employed and one of my projects didn't start, I'm not so keen on wasting money either
oh I still have a floppy drive too, but nearly every new mobo has stripped that

@IvoFlipse hehe, somehow they just don't seem to be used much anymore

even though they get 200k views on SU :P

indeed - nostalgia is a powerful force ;)
right
I'd best be off, in-laws to visit and all
cya later

have fun :)
or good luck ;)

2:38 PM
ivo got ur computer back on?

I haven't rebooted yet, because I was running Super antispyware
and am working a presentation

2:53 PM
i see.. i think with all the work you have been doing in su you are pretty good at computers.. but still wanna remind u to check for viruses =)

I tried winmate, after reading it on a site I 'trusted'
and it did something to the registry that messed it up
so I'm not expecting a virus

@IvoFlipse what's winmate?

but when I tried your registry key, it didn't work outright, so I guess I needed to reboot

i see.. then it's probably ok
@Nyuszika7H, I guess you don't want to try it, but it's at t55.net

I just left out that info, as I felt quite embarrassed

2:58 PM
nevermind... you left me worried though.

> Database Error Error establishing a database connection

i can go there without problems...

well no worries :)

:)

plus I'm getting a new CPU soon, so I'll reinstall anyway

2:58 PM
It was because NotScripts :P

cya then

2 hours later…
4:58 PM
Good morning everyone

hi @MarkSzymanski

Hi, @IvoFlipse. How are you?

fine, making a presentation of my results

Cool.

so walking through all my scripts to get some nice examples of things that don't work yet
and how are you? :)

5:01 PM
I'm doing great, thanks. Just woke up a few hours ago.

it's dinner time here :P
hoeray for time zones

Hehe.
They really come in handy where they make a 10hr flight only take 3hrs ;)

yeah, or when you loose an entire night when flying back :\

Heh, yeah.

5:58 PM
Can anyone see these symbols? ‽ ⸮

nope @MarkSzymanski

I can
strange question marks

@Sathya, @IvoFlipse: What OS?

Chrome 10, Windows 7 x64

6:00 PM
And, the first is an interrobang. The second an irony mark.

@MarkSzymanski same as @IvoFlipse

Hmm.
Virtual Machines are completely sandboxed, right? I don't want my answer to this question to be incorrect...
0
A: Are virtual machines safe?

Mark SzymanskiYes, it is totally sandboxed. There is no chance of anything infecting the host system.

@MarkSzymanski that answer is not entirely correct
if the folders are shared / on a network with host, the virus can escape via sharing

8
Q: Does the Virtual PC XP Mode need safety measures?

Ivo FlipseDoes the Virtual PC XP-Mode (or any other virtualized mode) require safety measures, such as antivirus or a firewall? I'm just wondering if the XP-Mode would be a large security loophole, since it's so much more integrated into Windows 7. Actually I'm wondering the same for Portable Ubuntu, are ...

6:03 PM
Edited my answer accordingly. Thanks, @Sathya.

hoeray for different wording in duplicates

@IvoFlipse :)

And, the OP said that there weren't any shared folders (like locally shared ones) so that rules out that possibility.
I just added in the exception for network shares.
Whoo! only 400 rep until 2000 :3

anyhow, just got back from a long day of (motor)bike riding :)
fly back to Chennai tomorrow morning & back to work :(
'nite folks

nite nite @Sathya

6:07 PM
Goodnight, @Sathya.

6:19 PM
hi guys
what is your favorite partition app?

6:33 PM
I stopped partitioning, so hard to tell
what do you want to achieve?

@sterz: I like gparted

7:34 PM
Grah.
Liquid is evil.
YAY!
It works! :D

7:47 PM
evenin' all

8:31 PM
welcome back @DMA57361 how was it at the inlaws

not bad, thanks

wow you get back online and the first you do is flag non-answers ;-)

wasn't the first thing I did, probably close thou :P

so why's this room called root access?
just something important to super users?

8:50 PM
@NathanG "root" is normally the name of the superuser account on Linux like OSes

9:00 PM
@DMA57361 I know, just wondering why it's the name of the room.

why not? better than "general chat"

Yeah, certainly true. Just wondering if it had any special story or anything.

shrug possibly. At a guess, whoever created the room original just picked something they thought sounded good :)

2 hours later…

A: Command line PDF reader

El Capitan del CrunchoExtracting text from a PDF?? Just double-click a saved PDF and it will open in Evince (the default document viewer in Ubuntu). Highlight the text you want to extract (or CTRL+A and CTRL+C to grab it all), and dump it into a text editor (CTRL +V). You don't need any special software for this. Je...

Is that trolling or honest confusion?
because I hate to hammer on him if he's just a confused new user

11:21 PM
@CRoss: That seems like trolling to me.

hmm, ok

11:37 PM

Q: How to know if a website is logging my IP address?

0xfaceb00cIs there any way to check that when I visit a site, if the site is logging my IP address?

should this go to Web Apps or something?
btw @CRoss that guy is suspended
sorry for not seeing it earlier

@IvoFlipse No problem
@IvoFlipse That belongs I think
as much as it does on WebApps anyway

Does anyone here use Jekyll for a website?

ah well, we shall see then :)

11:54 PM
Grah.
I hate jekyll >.>

@MarkSzymanski Jekyll?
