then still, go and do it

wow, looks awesome @IvoFlipse

I'm impressed. so did you fly over here to do this?

I tried swimming, but couldn't get past England :P

kinda slow going, I'm sure @IvoFlipse LOL

8:08 PM
Point taken @IvoFlipse I'll head west this spring.

@IvoFlipse I can't believe you made it to england :)

where are you @Kyle

actually that's only a 20km swim @KronoS

New Jersey

or something like that

8:08 PM
Trenton NJ

yep

nice, try driving @Kyle

we did that entire tour in 19 days @Kyle, so if you cut away some of detours, I'm sure you can do it in pieces
fly to vegas, drive around to Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon and back to Vegas

Good idea

sounds like a good idea

8:10 PM
Then I don't have to put the miles on my car
..and I have still have a free flight from Southwest :D

you can go watch Death Valley and Area52 if you feel the need

Area 52?

Area52?
@IvoFlipse I think you mean Area 51

Area51

lol 1 # off

8:11 PM
haha :P

and you could stop by Antelope Canyon near Lake Powell
I actually googled if it would correct me
I was assuming the area51.se part was just to look like the real one

My parents went to lake powell and rented wave runners 5 years ago they said it was amazing.

nope

@IvoFlipse Okay so there is a area 52

8:12 PM
well regardless, you could go there
Death Valley is... awkward...

so where's area 1?

In Delaware?
I believe they were the first state, it would make sense.

@IvoFlipse 21 miles (~34km) IIRC

@IvoFlipse mind finishing the close?
you don't seem to be looking at the "vote to close" ;)

@KronoS already done :)

8:16 PM
@David, don't answer off-topic questions, naughty naughty

Ya! @DMA57361 to the resuce!
@IvoFlipse I gotta admit that I fell into that trap... with the spiders in the computer case question
2

spiders in the computer case...?

@KronoS the spiders in the computer case question? LOL

ya I don't think the quesiton has been delete @IvoFlipse can you still access it?
but anyways the guys wanted to know how to fiz spiders in his cases.... I told him to go buy bug spray...
another kid said to buy a lizard...

@KronoS haha
good stuff
A question like that can only inspire quality answers...

8:19 PM
or fit bigger case fans and crank up the RPM?

@DMA57361 and then video tape it so we can all watch.

@IvoFlipse do we flag link only answers?

leave a comment telling them to elaborate on it and flag them for mod attention. Put in a message: not a real answer

I usually comment... will start flagging as well...
what about editing migrated questions without associated account... worthwhile?
@DMA57361 @studiohack @IvoFlipse

if you can make them better, go for it
I've edited a few of that nature before

8:23 PM
no don't flag those, we can't do much about them
unless you see they start replying with another question

@KronoS in fact, the floppy drives question is of that category I think

I love this /review... gives me something to do when I decide not to do homework :)

@KronoS: I usually edit if it can be improved...
regardless of user/no user

whoa... 18624 posts picked up by the "all" filter on Low Quality... I know many are false positives, but still

@DMA57361 ya... some of them are probably like this:

A: search bar in google chrome not returning results

SathyaYou did not hit the Enter ↵ key.

8:29 PM
indeed, there's plenty of false positives on there

darn that @sathya and getting onto the low quality posts... tisk tisk... Now I'm wondering about his mod capabilities ;)
3

I've found "late answers" to be quite good for picking up non-answers

@IvoFlipse: i have a task for you .. superuser.com/questions/236690/…
find someone with an answer for that :))

impossible, there's no API for it

@akira I'm pretty sure it can't be done

8:33 PM
you cant always pick the low hanging fruits, folks.
aim higher :)

From what I've seen so far, Stack Exchange is where people go for facts. Quora is where people go for opinions.
oh SNAP!

pointing with the mouse sux :)

Q: Best way to get data off a computer with no support for USB or ethernet?

Connor WA customer has a computer running Windows 98 (I know, cringe) and needs to take some data off the computer to put on a new laptop. I've tried using USB, but Windows 98 doesn't have USB storage drivers. So I thought I'd transfer the data via ethernet, but the computer doesn't have an ethernet por...

Guess we have a new QotW that solves no real problems :P
@akira I really don't think there will be a solution for you

Ya I saw that and put in my two bits... I don't understand why he doesn't just take out the hard drive

yeah, taking out the HDD would be the cheapest and easiest way...Win98 is so slow, I still have an old Compaq with 98 on it.

8:37 PM
sorry for being naughty @IvoFlipse maybe I should comment my answer next time.

@KronoS it would definitely be easier for him to take out the hard drive and it wouldn't take so long.

though... I would think it would be cool to use the parallel port... just to use it...
it's like going back and playing with lego's, or linkin logs, or tinker toys just for the fun of it

lol

mental blocks are always the hardest to overcome

Yeah it's nostalgic to go back and use this old tech but it gets old real quick when you have wait 3 hours to transfer a 5 meg file

8:40 PM
@KronoS and the usb/ethernet question ..

@KronoS I'm not sure I'd of put Lego and parallel ports in the same group

i think i ll spend some of my xp to bounty my question.

I just upgraded the firmware on some powerconnect switches and the 5 meg files took me all day to update 3 switches with a 9600 baud serial cable.

btw, what happens if i spend 1000k and drop below 10k .. is the access to the tools removed then again?

@akira yes, you'll lose the tools

8:42 PM
I thought 250 was the max?

bad design imho

@akira I've seen complaints by people on MSO

best wait until you get a bit higher :P

if someone loses his xp due downvotes: ok
but for bounty?

@IvoFlipse what about answers that repeat basically someone else's answer?
like this one?
0
A: How can I logoff and go to stand-by via Win XP script?

FredThis batch file is GREAT! I just had to add a few tweaks to make it work with Windows XP. I also minimized the amount of time to wait for the Standby scheduled task. Scheduled tasks only run every minute, so I set the maximum wait time to 1 min, 15 sec. Now I can Logout and Standby with a sim...

didn't he look at the answer just above?
@akira I agree

8:43 PM
what's with those rem's?

@IvoFlipse lol

is that a % or # to comment out stuff?

I don't know?

@IvoFlipse rem is a comment in a batch file IIRC

I flagged it and just gonna let you mod figure it out

8:45 PM
the %'s are variable related

alright... only 8 flags left and now it's time for class again..

what's with that other flag @KronoS?

@KronoS then the 2 of us shall built a new group and attack the castle which the evil jeff holds ransom :)

which one?@IvoFlipse
@akira Great! just give me the time and place and I'll be there...

A: How do I find and activate missing fonts in Windows 7?

jafslg1Don't know what caused the problem in Windows7; but I also discovered that many of my fonts were longer being recognized (ala TurboTax) or replaced with italics. Contacting HP support didn't help; they always recommend a complete Windows restore when they can't figure it out. I copied the "Fo...

8:48 PM
mis flag? I don't remember flagging that one.... I viewed it though

i ll attack him from here and you from over there and then we crush him

oh man gotta go... I'll talk to you later... or in a few min wehn I pull up my ipod after getting bored :)

your review will flag it for my attention :P

@IvoFlipse: whats your oppinion about the "if ((xp - bounty) < 10k) { return no_tools_access; }" issue?

then don't hand out a bounty

8:56 PM
is not handing out bounty in the interest of su?
its obvious how to avoid the situation but thats silly
"i spent so much time to gain xyz xp, and spending 50 bounty makes me drop below xyz again just because the imersion with su was so total i couldnt resist to hand out a bounty"

that can be said for any rep level
the rep privileges are very clear: you get access to the tools that match your current rep
not the rep you would have had, hadn't you handed out bounties, gotten downvotes or whatever can affect your rep

Any Ubuntu users here?
if so I have a quick(hopefully) newbie question

unless it's really noobish, nope

I never used it but I got tasked with getting Nagios running on our test esxi

@IvoFlipse thats a little bit like running away from the problem. it can be implemented by defining "accumulated xp" as the barrier to gain access to a certain level. blocking / punishing people to give away bounty (which is a good and noble thing imho) is .. strange. could be done better, imho.

9:04 PM
I spazed out and killed a terminal window while using vi and now the file is locked and I can't delete it

@Kyle shrug, sorry, too advanced for my (lack of) Linux skill

@DMA57361 Me too :( thx for responding.

trust me @akira when you start introducing variables like that, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage all the different factors that influence whether you should/shouldn't have access

googlefu time

if stackexchange would be a trivial problem a lot of competitors would have solved it years ago.
@Kyle: in which sense is the file "locked"?
@Kyle "the file is opened somewhere else" or "i have a swap file here"?

9:07 PM
I have a swap file in /var/tmp/
I think I might have to remove it through cli with sudo

tell vim to just load the file
did you use vi(m) via sudo?

yes
so just vi /var/tmp/%filename%

the open it again via sudo
s/the/then

ahh okay now I got it, Thank you!
still getting used to linux.. I haven't used it in years
I appreciate the help @akira
Now i just need to remember :q! when I eff up.

@akira FYI - hit the up arrow and you can edit your last chat message (there's a time limit)

9:14 PM

10:01 PM
Good afternoon, everyone.

hi @MarkSzymanski

Hi, @IvoFlipse. How are you?

I'm doing fine @MarkSzymanski, just that my data has been giving me some problems for the last few hours :P

Ah :P
Is it just me, or does it look like this chair is made of bacon?

nope, looks like tasty crunchy bacon

10:08 PM
Hehe.
Chunky bacon :3

going straight to your minimalistic blog?

though what was up with those blurry picks?

Those were probably ones that I took.
If you go to the photos section of my website you can see which ones were the photos I took.

but what's up with them? :P

10:11 PM
What do you mean?
Why did I put them up?

yeah

Who here was looking for Google Chrome Bookmark Bar separators?

they're not as good looking nor as tasty as that chair
you found one?

I dunno, they're pictures I took and it's my website...

put up a question on SU @TomWij
you can stick it in there ;)

10:12 PM
It's way too localized, it's where you don't give names to the bookmarks.
You could then give a bookmark where you want a separator after the name {space}{space}|

oh right

The | comes in the exact middle and is less wide than a bookmark so it kinda separates them...

I just used abbreviations like MSO/MSU

Someone was trying it a while ago after I hinted that it looks nice without names, but this looks like a close enough solution.
Only thing that might bother is when hovering the bookmark the separator gets highligted too, but well, there is no other customization available for that unless you go hack the source code. :-)

@IvoFlipse: And the reason that the photos aren't the best quality is because I took them with my 4th Gen iPod Touch.

10:24 PM
that explains it ;)

@ivoflipse can you update qotw for week 2 to status-blogged?... Thanks... I'll create this weeks question later tonight

will do

Oh also is there a way to have the blog link at the bottom of the page to link to our blog and notthe stackoverflow?

probably not until we're deemed worthy by Jeff
and they move the content to the SE blog

:( when are we deemed worthy by Jeff? Page views? Content? When I've solved life mystery and blogged about it? ;)

Q: Top Question of the Week #3

Ivo FlipseNow we're into week 3 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any question that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity sake. We are lo...

I don't know and giving then Jeff was able to live of blogging means he has high standards
but once we get other users to help with the editing things will get easier (on you mostly)

Oh sweet you made the question for me thanks @ivoflipse!

do we have a question about that?

yes we do have a question about that somewhere @IvoFlipse

hmm strange the article I got the link from said it was extensive: ghacks.net/2011/01/24/windows-7-and-ssds
but it's not really

Q: Confirming that Windows 7 is using SSD optimizations

Seth SpearmanTook the plunge and installed Windows 7 on my computer. Even better, I installed it on my new Intel x25m (got to love that SSD goodness.) Vista was known to thrash, throttle, and otherwise wear out an SSD. Apparently Windows 7 addresses some of the more serious issues. However, I am more con...

10:39 PM
hmmm the form of the question sucks so hard :(

Ya

btw what was that question earlier today, that was kind of strange?

i've seen several....
what was it about? @IvoFlipse

You mean the transfer data without USB or ethernet

@IvoFlipse: I'm trying some interesting queries, one moment...

10:43 PM
I think so yeah

@KronoS, @IvoFlipse: that would be an excellent question for the blog, but some of the answers are not suitable

1
A: Best way to get data off a computer with no support for USB or ethernet?

KronoSIf you absulutely cannot take out the hard drive, and cannot use a USB flash drive, then you can use the parallel port on the system to transfer files. However, speeds are going to be SLOW (I'm talking dial-up era speeds) so to be fully honest with you, take out the hard drive and transfer the f...

it requires some ingenuity (if you don't go for the obvious ones)

yeah...@KronoS your word in bold is misspelled

what answers @studiohack?

10:44 PM
Whoops @studiohack

@IvoFlipse: the obvious ones, like "Go by a CD" etc
that's not blog material to recommend to ship someone a CD or go buy one, i'm sensing that the OP is somewhat lazy...IMO
it is a good idea to have some CDs on hand...always! so invest a couple bucks and get a few...

Q: What are the essential tools you always have handy when attempting to fix someone's PC problem?

MarkSpecifically, I'm interested in knowing what tools you keep loaded on your thumb drive when asked to deal with a family member or friend's personal computer issue? Off the top of my head, I can think of things like: AVG Advanced WindowsCare SpyBot etc. ...but this question is not necessarily...

Cawas Possible Duplicate: Something’s slowly eating my HD space Somehow part of my files from my USB disk, 40GB of it (exactly the space I was missing), were copied to /Volumes/ and when I mounted the disk it was called "600GB Disk 2", while "600GB Disk" was filled with duplicated data...

But it would be cool torevisit how to transfer data other than a USB flash drive and networking

awesome I transferred the question that one was closed as a dupe off

Rawr.
My IRC bouncer hates me.

10:48 PM
besides we don't have to blog about the top answer
but about the question itself
and with we, I actually mean @KronoS will work his ass off

Q: How do I build a DIY NAS?

Kaushik GopalI'm looking for good, detailed instructions on how to build a DIY NAS (Network Access Storage). I'm planning on doing it cheap (old PC config + open source software). But not too cheap either. I'm ok with investing in a RAID card setup if you think that's advisable. I would like to know: What ...

It seems @Sathya takes the lead in Meta participation, then @DMA57361 followed by @KronoS and @Bloodphilla in a tight race

@IvoFlipse you're always making me work my butt off ;)
@Sathya is leading in just about everything too
