1) yes it still applies today. 2) Yes Christians should consider adopting, but out of charity, not because the planet is in danger of over-crowding

@Flimzy Ah, I see.
That makes me curious...what kind of end-times theological view do you hold?

I'm a panmillennialist
I believe it'll all pan out in the end
:P

@Flimzy Horrible pun. :P

It's not original to me :)

I'm not surprised. :P

5:05 AM
I've also heard "promellennialist: I'm in favor of end times"

[tag:chuckles] That one's bad too. :P

But then again...all puns are bad. :P

Q: What is the Biblical Basis for Sola Scriptura?

leeand00Is there anywhere in the Bible that says Christians should be Sola Scriptura?

Ahha!
I was hoping someone would ask that
I hope it doesn't get closed as a dupe, since it's not... but based on titles alone, it will seem like one.

@Flimzy That's true; not a dupe but looks like one.
Also, I love leeand00's comment. :P

Yeah, it's a good one :)

Lol, we commented much the same thing in response to Mason... :P

5:10 AM
hehe

And 8 seconds apart too! :P

Mason's just doing his job... I predicted early on that a real SS question would be flagged as a dupe of that one...

lol
I see you lurking @Purmou... :P

lol
i don't have my phone for a year
and the moment i get it back
somebody prank calls me

Oh, sorry
I shouldn't have done that
Ooh, go Shog... he caught that the "be fruitful" question was a dupe

5:17 AM
10 minutes ago, yeah
so @flimzy
should this have been closed?

Q: Is it okay to have doubts?

PurmouI was raised Christian. I am Armenian, and my parents were raised Christian (however my grandmother was raised Catholic). Every so often I think about my religion, and I can't help but think about whether it's true or not. I know that it's more on a "believing is seeing" basis rather than "seein...

leeand00 has an interesting blog

@Purmou I know you directed the question to Flimzy, but I'll say that I don't think it should have been closed although Hedge made a good point.

woah

It might have better luck if it's stated like "What does the Bible say about those who have doubts?"

leeand00 -- his name is andrew leer right?

5:21 AM
looks like it
do you know him?

he added me on google+
strange

heh

though the name does sound incredibly familiar
it's my goal
i have made it my goal
to get to 600 rep
off of tag wikis

@ElendiaStarman You liked my answer, eh? Gracias

okay
three tag wikis should do it
@Flimzy can you approve those again?

5:25 AM
@Purmou I think that will be my goal, too... I will not rest until I reach 600 rep!
@Purmou: I'm not sure if I have that ability right now

hardy har har :P

@Flimzy You're welcome. I saw that I had 55% accepted, so I'm going through my questions and accepting the best ones.

I need to accept a few more, too... but I'm holding out on better answers ona few
I'll probably start awarding bounties in a few days if the public beta doesn't bring about new answers on its own

Wooo~~~
Just gave myself +10 reputation! :P

haha

5:28 AM
And +150 total to other people... :P

and gave me +30 ;)

A: Do I have to attend church every Sunday?

Thomas ShieldsYes and no. Calvin said something to the effect of "God cannot be your Father if the Church is not your mother," his point being that the church is very, very important to the spiritual life of the Christian. Most if not all New Testament letters are addressed to specific churches, in Acts orders...

i don't want to just go for this answer just cause it has the most votes
(which i know doesn't always warrant a good answer, but y'know)

Accept the answer that you feel answers the question best, regardless of votes.

@Purmou On two of my questions, I actually accepted the second answer in terms of votes because of what @Flimzy just said.

I only need 171 more rep, until C.SE is my second-place account on all of SE

5:30 AM
@Flimzy It's already MY second-place account! :P

it's my first
...

@Purmou: You may even find that by accepting one that doesn't have the most votes that it will get more exposure in the future and it will become with one with most votes

My first-place account is Math.SE with 1,407 and my third-place is SciFi.SE with 206.

I have 4485 on SO, 2170 on SU, and 1899 on C.SE

this guy is still trying to prank call me
it's been 4 times now

5:31 AM
@Flimzy Lol, nice.

SF has 1169, and my 5th place is Programmers with 401... and I've never done anything on that site
All of my rep on Programmers is from an answer I posted to a question that was later migrated there

5 times

@Flimzy Lol. My 206 on SciFi is from ONE answer. :P

And I' still in the "top 49% overall"... to me, it's sad if I can be in the top 49th percentile of all time, without ever having participated on the site.
I guess your answer got a few down votes?

@Flimzy Nope; nine upvotes and an accepted.

5:34 AM
ah, right

105 + 101 from having 200+ elsewhere = 206...

down votes wouldn't explain the divisible-by-5-ness anyway
I have 401 on Programmers, 1 from being human, 100 from elsewhere, 300 from 30 upvotes on an answer.

yeah
@Flimzy Wow, nice. :P

Too bad he hasn't accepted my answer

hahahahaha
dang, @ElendiaStarman
You're beating me D:

5:35 AM
@Purmou I sure am! ^_^ :P

i feel my answers on this site have been...frowned upon simply because of their openness
i don't know how to describe myself. the only way i can think of is that i'm not a die-hard Christian
I'm pretty open-minded about things

@Purmou Well, one great way to improve your answers is to support them with Biblical references.

and I do believe that there are some empty spots in Christianity that science has solved, and vice versa
@ElendiaStarman yeah, but for me, who hasn't read the bible...it takes me a while to find an appropriate one

Or references in general.

and even when i did, everyone went all "yeah but that's just a metaphor"

5:37 AM
@Purmou You use BibleGateway, right?

lol
@ElendiaStarman yep

@Purmou: that's not a reason not to quote the Bible... it's a reason to read the Bible :) which you say you're doing, so it's working well at forcing you to examine your faith
... it does the same for me

@Flimzy oh yeah, i'm getting a chance to read it
slowly but surely

And me as well. A couple of my questions came about BECAUSE of other viewpoints expressed on this site.
Like the demons one.

so guys, i'm answering my own question
because some further investigation gave me the answer I wanted
my evil eye question to be exact

5:39 AM
@Purmou That's perfectly fine and even encouraged, in fact.
[cracks up laughing] Look at my rep! :P

I'm also primarily doing it for the self learner badge xD

haha
yeah
wikis at area 51 had that for a while
i bumped it up with an answer upvote

And that tag seals the deal...
you're the anti-christ!

Oh! Man! If only I had one less bronze badge! Then it'd also say 216 which is 6*6*6! :D

5:41 AM
hahahahahahahahaha

@Flimzy [breaks down] :P

wooooow
irony at its best

Okay, I solved it for you
I upvoted one of your questions
:)

@Flimzy noooooooooooooooooooo.com

@Flimzy nooo! upvote one of mine! D:

A: What is the origin of the Evil Eye in Christianity?

PurmouFurther investigation (both on the internet and with my family) led me to discover that the Evil Eye has a counterpart in my religion—the Nazar (which raises an interesting point of why this is not so in Turkey, as Caleb pointed out). The Nazar is meant to ward off the Evil Eye, which is d...

vote up
...
that came out wrong
i meant it like you would say "drink up!"
haha

5:43 AM
@Purmou lol

yaaaaaaay question upvote
lol
this chat is really ganging up on me about time limit between messages
psh. i had to wait six seconds.

@Purmou lol...I tend not to have that problem :P

it's a habit for me to spread out my messages across multiple lines. i should really stop that

I have that problem, too... I need to learn to put all of my thoughts on one line, instead of putting 'haha' and ':)' on a separate line, as I'm in the habbit of doing
haha
lol

lol
yeah
okay, i want to reopen my doubts question
but i feel i should edit my title
any suggestions or tips?

5:48 AM
Something like "What does the Bible say about doubting?"?

how about "Does God react to doubt?"

That'd invalidate the most-highly-voted answer, but that's not too big of a deal.
@Purmou Hmm. Almost.
I'd suggest "How does God react to doubt?".

If you're going to change the question to invalidate the answers, then I suggest asking a new question, and leaving the old closed one alone.

i thought that'd seem too opinionated
i really don't think how/why questions are appropriate
@Flimzy that's a good idea
though still, what title would you recommend? i don't wanna get closed again right off the bat

If you're not sure, you could ask on meta

5:50 AM
I think I'll just go with How does God react to doubt?
or What does the bible say about doubt?

The worst that can happen is it'll get closed, too.
Closing a question isn't a reflection on the asker, but only on the question.

yeah, i know
but i actually want to know the answer to this
and so far everybody's given great answers, but not really...

And as long as it's obvious that you're trying to improve the question, and not just re-ask the same question in a way to get around the "rules," nobody will be upset with you.

none of them really answered it well to me

that's an indication then that the question might have been to vague
... and that it was the right decision to close it
What kind of an answer are you hoping for?

5:52 AM
well, it's more of a personal matter

Aha! @Purmou, perhaps you'd like to ask for Biblical examples of doubt and how the doubters dealt with it?

i think it's me trying to make the doubts I have okay
know what i mean?

You're looking for justification for your doubts

@flimzy there you go
but, of course
there's no way to justify them
okay, how about this

Well, I think that is too broad of a topic to cover in one question
maybe it's better to ask questions about your specific doubts

5:54 AM
@Purmou Except perhaps as honestly seeking the truth and making sure that what you've heard or whatever IS the truth?

How did people in the bible overcome their doubts?
that's pretty specific

@Purmou That's great. Maaayyyybbbeee a little broad depending on how many there were, but that's a pretty good question.

@Flimzy what do you think?

I think that's better.

all right
posting then

5:56 AM
It'd be even better if you asked about a specific person or situation
Thomas is the obvious example... although probably not a good one

okay

since his alleged doubt was very specific, and not very relevant :)

a major one is this, and I addressed this in my previous question:
I have trouble accepting that Christianity is the true religion of God when there are all these other differing religious opinions in the world. How do we know which one is true?

While I think that's a very important issue... sadly, I don't think it's a very good fit for a Q&A site
That's really a topic for discussion

hmm

6:05 AM
Well, I'm going to bed. G'night @Flimzy and @Purmou! :)

Good night

@ElendiaStarman only gives me more of a chance to apps you in rep :D
@ElendiaStarman but good night :P

@Purmou My questions/answers should keep producing rep for me while I sleep. :P

@Flimzy sorry I couldn't get to those mockups today

no problem

6:14 AM
I'm in the mood to answer stuff on SO

That's not allowed.

?
stackoverflow
i'm in the mood to answer questions :P

Yeah, I know what SO means
I'm just saying, you can't do that!

why not?! :O

'cause you might earn more rep than me there

6:21 AM
pshhh
not in a while :P
i'm only at 381 there

that's almost 10% of what I have

1400 then
yeah, i'll get that by the end of the night :P

I have 4485 right now

...
my mind just blanked
haha
400*10 = 4000

I got most of that in the last 2 months

6:23 AM
i can answer questions
it's just that people get to them really quickly
and by that i mean they get accepted pretty quickly :P

6:44 AM
How's that SO rep coming?

i got distracted
:P

ah good, then I don't have to worry about you passing me as soon :)

good morning!

mornin'

things are rolling nicely here, just woke up to see I've already got 133 today
reminds me of Psalm 127:2!
there's no link to this chat room on the front page, btw

7:00 AM
there is for me
when I'm logged in any way
But you have to log in to use chat... so that probably makes sense

not for me, even logged in
well, I guess there are many servers they're serving stuff from that aren't completely in sync.
I guess I've never noticed similar inconsistency because I tend to chat with people in the same geographical area and so I don't hear from people using other servers

haha, @Caleb's latest question made me literally lol

@Flimzy just saw it...haha

7:18 AM
do we think of ESV as better than NIV?

by "we" you mean C.SE?
or you and me as individuals?

C.SE

C.SE isn't in the business of deciding which translation is better

okay then
either way, ESV is much more understandable by today's language standards

NIV is my preferred translation
but I don't think that means everyone should choose it

7:33 AM
@HedgeMage I think your answer was quite fair, and the challenge at the end very valid. Unfortunately the things you list mostly fall into the same category as the crusades: atrocities done in the name of Christianity that run contrary to everything Christian. I think you are right in your analysis that we need to speak out against those things, and also that fear is a significant cause of animosity against anything with the Christian label (as you point out often not without reason).
@waxeagle: Did you catch the point in there about missions work disrupting economics / aid? I hope you're still putting together notes for that post some day. I know it's a hard one but at some point it's going to need to be asked.

A: How did all the animals fit into Noah's ark?

PurmouThis source provides some excellent detail on the subject. In regard specifically to how all the animals fit, however, we look at the same verse that you quoted, Genesis 6:19-21: 19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with ...

my best answer yet, I think.
what do you guys think? referenced and everything. i'm proud of it, hehe.

7:57 AM
@Caleb interesting question...whether you can go to church online or not.

8:25 AM
why can't i edit my comments?

You can only edit them for 5 minutes

pff

woot, already at 210 rep for the day
and still have room for 60 more

i wanna get mortarboard today
i'm already at 68, i think

I might pass my SU rep tomorrow

8:32 AM
@Flimzy what did you think of my ark answer?

Looks pretty good... a couple suggestions to make it even better.... 1) I think he only took 7 pairs of clean animals, and 2 of the others, but I'm not 100% sure, I'd have to read the entire account again to be sure
2) Just for clarity, you might include the metric measurements of the ark, for those readers who aren't in the U.S.
But it otherwise looks like a pretty good answer
with references, as you say :)
I find it rather ironic that Young-Earther will so adamantly reject evolution, but then use evolution as a basis for all the animals fitting on the ark.

@Flimzy i'll edit to include the metrics, as well as with the clean animals point

Many of the other answers could be improved by including metric measurements, as well

@Flimzy though i don't think it was ever made clear how many clean there were vs. not clean

Purmou: I don't think it was made clear, either.

8:43 AM
anyways, saved

Additionally, I would contend that when the Bible says he was to take 7, that probably is symbolic more than literal

hmm
like an exaggeration? just to make sure he takes enough of the clean?
also, i edited the easter post but not the title >.>

Not necissarily an exaggeration
Often in the bible the number 7 is used to indicate completeness, or goodness
When we're told to forgive someone "not only 7, but 70 times 7" times, for instance

@Flimzy I see. that would make sense because in an earlier verse, and one i quoted in my answer, he says only 2 of each species

I don't think we're meant to keep a tally of how often we've forgiven someone, and after the 490th time, stop forgiving
the phrase "not 7, but 70 times 7" means "don't only forgive them completely, but forgive them ABSOLUTELY completely"
(a very rough paraphrase)

8:50 AM
maybe to emphasize to take absolutely no less than 2 of each clean species

Anyway... if you're going to take a literal interpretation of that passage, may as well take a literal interpretation of the number 7, too

@Flimzy You're awesome for asking that question about when Christ was born.
Because, in fact, in my religion, we don't celebrate his birthday on December 25th
we believe it was on January 6th

The Wikipedia article on Christmas mentions Jan 6, and a few other dates, as other common Christmas celebrations
I have a pretty strong opinion on the issue... but I'm curious what others will say
And my strong opinion is that what matters is that we celebrate... not when :)

...
you took the words right from my mouth
i was even going to say that in my post D:

hehe
someone already down voted that question

9:10 AM
@Flimzy how do i do a footnote?

You can use subscript or superscript with sub and super

okay
answered

@Flimzy hope you don't mind my title edit on christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/1360/…
I felt like asking the obvious related question:

Q: In which year was Christ born?

dancekThis question is a spin-off from On which date was Christ born? There are differing views on the birth year of Christ, which also affect the dating of the resurrection (as we know Jesus's age on death). Which years are possible, and what are the arguments?

how do you link questions?

No, that's a good change
I just updated the body to match your wording more closely
and a good followup question, too

Q: How do we ask questions regarding different faiths without being offensive?

KronoSI have multiple questions regarding other faiths I'm not fully familiar with. However I don't want to make it seem like I'm either poking at in disbelief/disgust in their doctrines or causing a situation of heated argument. What are some specific steps we can follow in the spirit of Christianit...

@Purmou: It looks like you reached your 600 rep goal

@Flimzy Some time ago, heh.
I'm trying for mortarboard now though.
and 750 rep at least

Q: Is Christianity a monotheistic religion?

Andrew VitOne of the commandments states "place no other gods before me". Does this mean God is implying the existence of other gods, or why is this explicitly stated? The Biblical universe also includes a varied cast of supernatural characters like Lucifer, Metatron, Archangels, Demons, Seraphim, etc. So...

This question strikes me as possibly a little broad or undefined

@Flimzy I thought it was going to be a terrible question, but it's not that bad

Well, I need to sleep

9:24 AM
It presents a pretty interesting argument that I never noticed before.
@Flimzy Good night :)

'nite

sweet, 20 rep in under a minute
there should be a badge for gaining 50 rep in under a minute
@dancek, if you're the one bumping me up, i really appreciate it :)

@Purmou I wanted to be helpful so upvoted some of your posts
I tried to do so in the responsible way, i.e. only upvote those posts I would have anyway but hadn't seen before
or hadn't had votes for when I last saw them

well that just goes to show i had quite a few posts worthy of them

sure
though I'm a voter type, too. I try to use all my votes when I'm here, and mostly for upvoting.
it's not like I'm as quick to click "Like!" on facebook :)

9:33 AM
haha
i hate that part of facebook
precisely why i switched to google+
@dancek you should have a nice answer badge now (again) :P

@Purmou mmm... sweet :)
I might actually get Good Answer one of these days with public beta!

Q: Where did Goliath come from?

FlimzyThe popular story of David and Goliath describes Goliath as very tall ("six cubits and a span"--apparently roughly 9 feet 9 inches, or 297cm). Most children are just told he was a "giant" in Sunday school. Where did he come from? Possibly a now-extinct race of giants, or just some sort of gene...

i hate to say it, but this seems a bit off topic to me

10:24 AM
Should I get a notification if my comment is deleted? Because I really vividly remember commenting a post but the comment isn't there.

@dancek No, there is no notification

@Fabian ok, then it was removed... wonder why, but there's no way to inquire then.
Maybe I wrote it with an edgy tone, I was tired at the time.

@dancek You would need a mod for that, it might have been flagged enough or just deleted by a mod.

@Fabian so would anyone with mod tools see the deleted comment and what happened?

@dancek Yeah, I don't remember how much detail you see, but a comment is probably not important enough to bother about, I would just repost your thoughts or ignore it altogether.

10:31 AM
@Fabian yeah, asking more out of interest. I'm gonna ignore it, I trust there was a good reason.

Is there a place in scripture where its made clear that Abraham's call to sacrifice Isaac was a foreshadowing of Christ's sacrifice? I'm working on an answer for user unknown's question.

@waxeagle probably on Hebrews
give me a min

@waxeagle Hebrews 11:17-20 refers to what happened but it's not very explicit wrt Christ.

@dancek thats what I'm going to end up using
although I'm probably just going to state it.

@waxeagle Matthew 22:23–33 is actually something, but then it's not very straightforward
not very straightforward at all
this site has a nice table comparing Isaac and Jesus in the end: centervilleroad.com/articles/isaac.html

@dancek nah, thats not going to get me there.
@dancek this is a useful reference.

A: Abraham tries to sacrifice his son. Is exploiting a human a moral behaviour?

wax eagleLets lay some foundation from the start. (All scripture NIV) God and Abraham had quite the relationship. God promised Abraham a son who would become a great nation (Genesis 17:15) even when he was 100 years old and his wife was 90. Abraham believed God and God provided him a son who was named Is...
