@Richard: If we hold ourselves to the same standard ("quoting peer-reviewed literature"), then I wonder if that means we'll have lop-sided answers, supporting old-earth/theistic evolution... since most young earth scientists aren't well respected by scientific peers in the scientific community
@Richard Although I don't think Skeptics.SE actually requires peer-reviewed literature only, as the OP of that meta question claims

@Flimzy Good point. I, personally, think that these questions should be migrated to Skeptics, since that's more of a scientific community for that purpose. These seem more like questions better suited for those communities.

@Flimzy why would it be a problem if there were more old-earth/theistic evolution answers?

If, on the other hand, we could come up with a good Young Earth question that was rooted in Christianity, I could see that belonging here. (Maybe "what biblical support is there for YEC?")

@Flimzy that makes me go hmmm. If Creation is a valid scientific statement where is the science?

@Flimzy We only require reliable resources, peer-reviewed journals are ideal, but not absolutely required.
Questions about Creationism and YEC would be on-topic on Skeptics, though I would advise against directly migrating them. The communities and the requirements on answers and questions are just too different. The already posted ones especially should not be migrated, as most of the existing answers would violate our standards.

9:11 PM
@Caleb @Richard is right. It's a list question. Trying to think of how to save it..
But then so is this:

Q: What are the common arguments against theistic evolution?

djeikybWhat are the common arguments from Christians against the idea that God used evolution to create Earth over millions of years? This is not a place to argue. I'm interested in a rundown of the common response from Young Earth Creationists. Source your statements whenever possible.

@waxeagle, @CiscoIPPhone: I'm only saying that I think it would be hard to find quality "peer-reviewed" literature from YEers... not because their views are invalid, but because most of their peers think they're nuts, and won't review their work.
Most (not all) YEers come from a theological background, rather than a scientific background... therefore most "scientists" don't consider them peers to be reviewed

@Flimzy IF their work is good and valid it will be properly peer reviewed. Because the current scientific establishment/evidence believes contrary, the burden of proof is on them. There isn't a "Science racket" that is preventing it from being published.

That may be an argument that there is weak science to support YEC, but I think that's beside the point.
@waxeagle Yeah, you may be right.
I think I would support a higher standard for questions on science... Although I wonder how reasonable it is to have different standards for different types of questions. Will that confuse people?

Some recommended reading if you're interested in what a Christian Physicist and Biologist think.

I've done a lot of reading by christian scientists... just not any YEers...
I don't hold to YE beliefs... but I do want to respect them and allow them to be shared on this site.

9:21 PM
@Flimzy I'm honestly can't remember if these guys are YEers either...They are profs at the College I went to.

I'll add them to my Amazon list :)
Only $9.59 for kindle. whee

@JonathonByrd actually, no - the question asks where does the 6000-12000 year number come from. You only touch on this in the first line of the answer. The rest of the answer is your beliefs; the question did not ask for that.
"As a YEC believe that God is more then capable of creating everything in six days and that the earth is less than 10,000 years old." is perhaps the only part that comes close to the question asked by the OP, and that is not really very revealing.

Q: Verse about two sons

DForck42There is a verse that i remember that talks about a father with two sons. The father gives money to both of his sons. One son invests his money and returns it to his father after becoming wealthy, or something like that, and the other son squanders it. If i remember correctly, even though the ...

Q: Why is homosexuality a sin in the Bible?

Wikis At Area 51First, this question assumes the Bible clearly states that homosexuality is a sin. If you disagree, that's a separate question. Based on that assumption, my question is why is homosexuality a sin? My reasoning is that God defines something as a sin because it is harmful or not loving; He doesn't...

Q: Is Christianity an experiential practice?

rpegIt has been stated to me that Christianity is "experiential" meaning it is experienced and not necessarily understood. Do I have that definition correct? Is this true?

can we kill this?

9:27 PM
This sounds like a good question... but one for discussion more than an "answer"
Although I'm tempted to provide an answer anyway

@Flimzy which one?

@Flimzy and its well trod ground at this point, lets kill it

@waxeagle I'm not sure
H'es not asking if the Bible says it's a sin...
he's asking "Why would God say something that doesn't hurt anyone is a sin?"

@Flimzy Then leave a comment about re-phrasing to ask THAT question (a good one) but the current wording is problematic.

@Flimzy then he should ask that.

9:29 PM
He does ask that. :)
both in the title and in the question.

@Flimzy its couched in terms of homosexuality though. Asking this question in this way has the potential to be inflammatory

Ah, gotcha
so remove homosexuality from the equation

@Flimzy "Is a Sin that doesn't hurt anyone still a sin?"

what position do you guys take on yec oec?
I'm poling the chat room

I'm a YEC (if tagged)

9:38 PM
I would be OEC

if ( "influences" == GOD && "sources" == JESUS ) { mark_correct(trolls_answer); };

But I consider *EC to be very much a secondary issue

switch lol {
case 1 haha;
case 2 hehe;

YEC/OEC/evolution I really dunno, God did amazing work either way!
(evolution seems a little improbable, but with some Goddidit I could believe in it)

9:43 PM
I don't think anyone disputes that God could use evolution... or 6 24-hour days...

$c.se = Christianity.SE;

(where by anyone, I mean any Christian who believes in an omnipitent God)
The dispute is more over what did he choose to do?

@dancek (cough APPENDIX cough)

@Flimzy but if he told you what he did and a man told you how he thinks god did it, why would you believe the man and not God?

@Caleb Sock puppet troll no less.

9:46 PM
@JonathonByrd: Generally, I don't believe Genesis 1 is God telling us "how" he did anything, but rather telling us that he did something.
If you've read my answer to the question about "How did light exist before the sun" then you'll see that I think Genesis 1 is also usually taken out of context by YECers

@Flimzy but you do realize either way God is very specific?

Anyhow, I'm bringing my question from meta here

Also, the Jews do not hold to gap theory (that Genesis 1:1->2 contain a gap).

since all I'm getting are more yec haters in meta
How should we approach the issue of creation?
because it just seems to cause huge debates no matter how its phrased

9:48 PM
Face it head on, and stop putting our heads in the sand.

Furthermore, I think other scripture makes it clear that God reveals himself through his creation, and I think his creation suggests an old earth.

If God says "I made the earth in six days"; then that's what He did.
There's no "it could be a million years, 4.5 billion" in there anywhere.

@RolandTaylor lets not argue about it here. I was just curious about his position.

@RolandTaylor Clearly I disagree... and you're not going to change my mind. So maybe we could not turn this into a debate here?

who else got a fulfilled commitment?

9:49 PM
God doesn't say things and then leave us to infer or come up with our own ideas to explain away what he did.

Q: Is carbon-14 still increasing in the atmosphere?

Jonathon ByrdIn my radiometric dating studies I've come across an individual that mentioned that the levels of carbon-14 are still increasing in our current atmosphere. No sources were provided of course, thus I'm interested in knowing more. Are the current levels of carbon-14 on the rise? and how can one te...

@RolandTaylor Don't let it be a personal issue.

@Flimzy it's an interesting view, thanks

9:50 PM
@MarcGravell really, let's not go there. cough Wikipedia: Vermiform appendix cough

I used to believe in evolution and God together for years, and then I came to my senses when the evidence would't add up. Sadly, I've since found a lot of cover up goes on, a lot of fellow youth leave the faith, etc. So, I refuse to back down on it.

@RolandTaylor If a YEC/OEC/athiestic evolution debate makes you emotional, I would respectfully suggest that you need to do some self-evaluation and prayer, so that you can more effectively and productively discuss the issues in the future
@RolandTaylor: especially *EC vs. athiesim... getting emotional in those debates is worse than uneffective... that's what the athiests usually want... so they count it as a victory

GUYS!!!! AGAIN BACK TO MY QUESTION
How do we handle this topic WITHOUT INCURING DEBATES

It doesn't make me emotional, it makes me passionate.
I'm not a very emotional person, sadly.

hehe

9:52 PM
does nobody have any suggestions?

@JonathonByrd I think we may sadly face a lot of opposition from evolutionists...

<--- either happy, or stark raving mad :)

Since we allow anyone here, not just other Christians

What do y'all say, should I be answering comments to my question asking why the dating is important? christianity.stackexchange.com/q/1363/60

any sources that get cited just become the center of the debate

9:52 PM
@Flimzy the understatement of the year award goes to :D...

and many athiests will comment on anything they find objectionable... That means they'll argue against OECs... and even more so against YECs...

@Flimzy My suggestion is that we do not shy away from sticking to what the word of God says.

@Flimzy I humbly submit that making people upset is absolutely not the intent of most atheists

As for you and I, we both know why we believe what we believe, (YEC), so when needed, let us simply present our cases as best we can, and avoid arguments.

@Marc: I didn't say that.

9:54 PM
@Flimzy "emotional", then

Could we just lock that question? It's already been closed.

@Marc: Most ahtiests (in my experience) who get into a debate over creation vs. evolution, do enjoy when their opponent becomes emotionally irrational. Maybe that's not the intent of the athiest... but they find it fun/amusing when it happens.
@Marc: Of course, that is also a small subset of athiests... not all enjoy that sort of debate
Anyway, if I miscategorized athiests, I apologize

@Richard what Q was closed?

A: Where does the belief that the Earth is relatively young (6000 years) come from?

Jonathon ByrdI'm a young earth creationist. No, not all Christians maintain this belief. Christians can identify themselves with two different categories, Young Earth Creationist (YEC) or Old Earth Creationist (OEC). As a YEC believe that God is more then capable of creating everything in six days and that ...

9:57 PM
@JonathonByrd: I have a hard time defending your position... I can defend your right to state your position...

It seems it's turned into a giant debate, which, of course, goes against the spirit of the SE sites, in my opinion

It's definitely caused some debate.
This is why I've been asking, humbly, how do we approach these questions and answers.

@JonathonByrd: In looking at the comments on your answer for the "global flood" evidence... I think those comments are probably justified.

I do not believe that rejecting them altogether is the solution

@JonathonByrd: But then my view is that the evidence for a global flood, as well as 24-hour literal days, is grossly lacking--because, again in my own view--those things are not true.

9:59 PM
@Flimzy The OP was asking for evidence, I linked to a scientist

@JonathonByrd Personally, I have nothing against YEC/OEC/Evolution questions. But I think they have to be specific enough so that they don't spark debate and enough about Christianity that they don't turn into science wars.

@Flimzy those questions are just the result of somebody disagreeing

@Richard with more specifics come more scrutiny and debate

@JonathonByrd: So pointing out criticism in "scientific evidence" to support them makes sense. I would expect the same if one of my answers has questionable conclusions.
@Jonathan
@JonathonByrd So maybe what you're asking is "Are comments that disagree with the question allowed?"
@JonathonByrd: I agree that your answer was perfectly on topic to the question.

Borror0I have seen a few questions discussion science, such as this one: What is the archaeological evidence for a global flood? Others do it in the answers, but not in the question. I think that is bad, because many users get it wrong. And that is a problem. The Stack Exchange Network's formula con...

I agree the answer was probably on topic to the intent of the question (the actual question was about the reason for the dates) - however, in the same way that it would be expected to provide biblical reasoning for biblical claims, it should be reasonable to provide scientific reasoning for scientific claims (within the extent of the site's purpose)

@Richard I still have questions regarding creation and if I ask them on skeptics I get hated. SO YES when the bible states something I want to know from a christian perspective the answer
even if that question is asking about the bible and science

I would happily upvote an answer that provided more than a single link to a oft-refuted scientist (sorry, but he is), when making that many claims about different fields of science

Q: Is it OK to question God about doubts?

DTestAre there any biblical references that indicate that it's ok (or not ok) to bring any doubts to God in prayer?

@JonathonByrd Then I think you should post something on that question. I suspect that it will probably end up having quite a bit of say in the end results: meta.christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/308/…

@Purmou I didn't completely agree with your question christianity.stackexchange.com/q/438/60 being closed, and thought it'd come up eventually again...

@dancek that's why I wanted to reopen it
I thought people would definitely have that question
i think i might just do that
but

@Purmou yeah, it's an important one

10:08 PM
RE: "do not shy away from sticking to what the word of God says" & "when the bible states something"

maybe it was phrased a bit like a discussion, but most of the answers do provide bible references.

problem is, the bible isn't as clear as some make it out to be
hence the diversity of opinion, even to the point of schisms and denominations
the bible doesn't have a single authoritative answer on yec vs oec

@djeikyb So very true. It gets worse when you try to juggle translations. christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/1395/…

i've been trying to find a way to frame oec and yec questions so people can answer them without promoting their own belief as The Christian Way

@Purmou I think discussing it with @HedgeMage or pro tem mods when we get them would be best

10:11 PM
@djeikyb Right! The purpose of Genesis isn't to give us scientific proof of how the Earth was formed. That was merely an opening thought. Genesis was about the beginning and foundation of Judaism.

my two entries into the fray unfortunately are (or ought to be) closed as lists

@dancek I discussed it with HedgeMage when he closed it. She's pretty adamant on his decision. I'll eave it for the pro tem mods.

@Purmou certainly we'll have that question one way or another, and I think it best to keep the one that's been around for a while already
@Purmou **s**he :)

@dancek I always forget that xD

@dancek Really? Huh. Good to know.

eh?

oh. i'm used to s/ he/ she form for that

@JonathonByrd I'm a mod on Skeptic. What do you want to ask, and which of your questions on our site got you "hated" exactly? Of the two questions tied to your Christianity profile, none of them got much attention (i.e. not even an answer, and only one comment total).

@djeikyb gotta nitpick a little, 's/foo/bar/' requires the last '/' too :)

@JonathonByrd I think I speak for everyone at Skeptic when I say we would love to create an atmosphere where religious people can get the facts behind any attempt at reconciliation they hear.

10:18 PM
@Borror0 I love Skeptics.SE myself and I support moving science-y questions there in general. But topics like the relation of a scientific-ish theory to the Bible would be quite off-topic there.

@dancek I'm not sure I understand what you're saying in the second sentence. Can you elaborate/give me an example?

What if we ask two questions... "What is Young Earth Creationism?" and "What is Old Earth Creationism?" This will give each side a chance to state their views, and Biblical basis for them...

@dancek That's the argument I made here: meta.christianity.stackexchange.com/questions/308/…

Then any other questions asking for further scientific explanation of these can be directed elsewhere

@dancek too true. my sed-fu is weak today

10:21 PM
@Flimzy Actually, I think those are fair questions. It's not posing the questions as debates, but merely asking what the stance is.

@Flimzy I'd upvote those

@Borror0 If I believed in YEC and wanted to know how it fits with Genesis, it's better asked here. (and I at least think that might have been Jonathon's point.) I certainly see the problems with such questions even here: the answering easily turns discussion turns debate, with scientific or pseudo-scientific arguments thrown around...
@Richard yeah, I read that and agreed.

and at least one more to come: "How does theistic evolution differ from old earth creationism?"

@dancek My point is that scientific questions don't belong on this site, in the same way religious questions don't belong on Skeptic. Whether YEC is congruent with the Bible is a religious questions science. Thus, it belongs on Christianity.SE. Conversely, whether it is possible to fast for 40 days is a scientific question about religion.

10:29 PM
How about "What is Theistic evolution?"

hmm. would that go over better?
"Both ideas start with the premise that God created. After this, I've heard tale of wars fought between the two camps. What is the gist of the differences between these two ideas?"
is the text i was about to post

That might be okay.
I might suggest that under a title of "What is theistic evolution?" though
Anyone answering a question on what is Theistic Evolution will probably compare and contrast it to OEC (or mention that it's a subset of OEC)
Anyway, it's your question, ask it how you want :)

A: Why is homosexuality a sin in the Bible?

Jenny ThomsonIf you subscribe to the belief that Christianity was conceived by humans and not gods, then you can look at the Bible as more of the authors' idea of a "Guide for good living" rather than a religious text. The authors apparently felt homosexuality was detrimental and/or offensive.

the answers are gonna be the same

Is this a useful answer? "If you subscribe to" doesn't sound like an answer, but a statement of the obvious.

@Purmou The subject matter is the same but the guidelines, background conent and exact scope are quite different.
@Purmou No. Proper answers to your question would actually focus on YOUR situation, which is why it got closed.
We also should not be closing questions as duplicates using targets that are themselves closed for other reasons. The correct thing to do would be to close them for the other reason.

10:43 PM
@Caleb my question didn't ask for reassurance of my own doubts, but doubts in general.

@aceinthehole I don't think so, perhaps just not worded it in a good way. I think he's trying to say god can't be disproven, so the burden is on the theists to prove it (because atheists can't disprove it)

@Purmou Then don't include all the personal background that made it sound like a pastoral support question.

Though an obvious troll, it's pretty funny: Does the Christian God have reproductive organs? [closed] christianity.stackexchange.com/q/1512/212

lol
hey, you were created in his image, you never know.

@Caleb I didn't want to make it a bare question. I just provided personal backgronud information as an example. I'm not going to say "A lot of Christians doubt this..." because that's just assuming.

10:46 PM
@Borror0 I just posted those two questions.

alright, i'm out for a few hours. look forward to seeing the community response to the latest barrage of creation questions

@Purmou SE sites are very much about paring things down to bare questions and answers. If the question needs background or an example, you can provide that, but leading with your personal background set the wrong stage for that question. As it stands I think the VTC was valid. If you want it re-opened try something more like the other question which was a replacement for yours without those issues.

@djeikyb Your new question looks a lot like a duplicate of this one

@Caleb How would you recommend I rephrase the question?
I just think that if the community thinks it's a good question (which the 16 upvotes indicate), and this is a community-driven network, then it's a valid question.

Exactly like the the new one that you proposed as a duplicate.

but i'm not asking about it in prayer.

@Flimzy I guess my intent with "what is ID" is to have a question that doesn't start out by antagonising ID in the title

10:53 PM
yesterday we thought of "How did people in the bible overcome their doubt?"

@Purmou That's not necessarily true. In order to really test that you would also have to get the CONCEPT to fly on meta. Bikeshed questions are quite popular on SE networks and get boatloads of votes, but that doesn't make them good questions. I'm not saying this is a bikeshed question, just that upvotes on a question don't make it a good question.
@Purmou Interesting, but sounds a bit poll-ish.

@Caleb How so?

@Purmou Sorry not poll-ish, list-ish. Person A did X, person B did Y, person C did Z.

@Caleb yeah, we thought about asking it for a specific doubt.
so we'd get just one example in the answer[s]

@djeikyb I think it's funny/curious that my YEC question has 5 votes, and your OEC has only one (mine)
I'm not sure what that says of the demography of our readers

11:00 PM
hi @Purmou, I think it'd be a better Q if you asked "is it okay to have doubts and what should people do about them, should ignore them?"

@Flimzy Sheep? Ran out of votes?
It is the end of a busy day, don't expect voting patterns to be too regular.

@Borror0 if my questions were not appropriate for skeptics, please move them to physics.se where I have just created an account

@ElendiaStarman I suggest re-asking your endtimes questions as one question per view (kinda like we've just done with YEC, OEC, TE, ID, etc)
I don't think I'm out of votes yet
But I am out of time... I'm supposed to meet someone in 15 mins

@Flimzy Yeah, that would be a good idea. Also, should I post them all at once?

and they live 15 mins away
@ElendiaStarman: I don't see why not...
and I'm not dressed yet

11:08 PM
@Caleb: Would reposting as 3 different questions help with the issue you raised?

@ElendiaStarman Yes, but I think it's going to suffer from the same problem the guys have been trying to hash out over creation issues. You're probably going to have to be even more specific than just covering one view .. more like one issue inside a view.
Also the Wikipedia documents you linked have supporting arguments and works of constituents of those views to peruse. What exactly would you like to learn?

@ElendiaStarman Maybe give the creation issue a chance to settle down... and see what we learn from that, before bringing up end-times
Although I suppose end-times theology won't be such a hot-button issue for athiest trolls

@Caleb Don't you think my question could generate answers similar to the answers the one we just closed would?
I mean, once I modify it
I think the title is fine though

@Caleb and @Flimzy: Hmmm...I'll think about it.

What if I just modify the content to reflect that it's not a personal issue, and include the question posed in the one we just closed?

11:14 PM
In the meantime, I'm trying to think of a good question so that I have a good chance of getting Motorboard...only 45 minutes left and 32 rep to go! O.O

haha
@ElendiaStarman Make that 30

@Flimzy Yep...made an edit specifically to make that an even number. :P :D

hehe
Okay, I'm out... I'll be back some time "tomorrow" to see how much new rep I have!
Tomorrow is the day I pass my SU rep :)
