12:01 AM
UTC 00:00! Time to vote! :P
And bam...23 votes. :P

@ElendiaStarman lol. I like to spread the love throughout the day :)

12:43 AM
Should I be insulted that I didn't get any of @ElendiaStarman's 23 votes?

@Flimzy yes

@Flimzy meh. me neither :)

@waxeagle Well, you could say that I would have made most of those votes throughout the previous day had I been able to... :P
@Flimzy and @waxeagle: are you guys SURE you didn't get any from me? :P

@ElendiaStarman 0 rep today

@waxeagle ...oh. >.>

12:46 AM
@ElendiaStarman Yeah I've been mostly handing out ones I wanted to before I left work...

@waxeagle Heh. I still have 17 more votes... :D

@ElendiaStarman: I haven't received any up votes yet today :(

@flimzy you just got one

@ElendiaStarman lol I'm not complaining. I only ask for upvotes if I'm close to some milestones :) and then its only a hint...

@Purmou ...and how would you know that? Because you gave him one? :P

12:48 AM
@ElendiaStarman indeed
i'm 50 away from 500
well, 40
that's 8 question upvotes
or
4 answer upvotes :D
much easier

Hey guys, if you don't have 1000 rep by the time we go to public beta tomorrow you will lose your free for all edit privs...Just a friendly service announcement

even suggested edits?
like, it won't be placed in a queue like it is now?

@Purmou no you can suggest.

that's fine then
i've been doing that for a while now :P

@Purmou meh, I'd rather just edit :). I''m going to miss it for a couple of days...

12:52 AM
i'm sure i can get to 1000 rep by two weeks, for sure
i got halfway there in 7
so
i'm pretty confident
plus i'm thinking of new questions every day

@waxeagle Yeah, same here. Just started using that privilege today... :P

@Purmou yeah if you can ask 1-2 good questions every day you are set...
@ElendiaStarman its a nice one. The best on out there for a non-mod IMO...

@waxeagle how fast do you think it will grow during the public beta?

@Purmou depends on how much traffic we get and maintain. The sites I frequent here have very little traffic. This site is actually averaging more visits than people signed up for the beta

12:55 AM
@waxeagle: Your private beta privs have nothing to do with your public beta privs (or post-beta privs)

@Flimzy the privileges stay until after the public beta?

No

@Flimzy I know. Thats what I'm saying. Those of us who don't have 1k rep when we go public won't have edit privs after

Tomorrow we'rea ll gonna lose a bunch of privs

its cool. I was just making a PSA

12:58 AM
lol, this was confusing

18 hours! :P

I think I need to upgrade my browser... the 'refresh' button in this one is about worn out from waiting for my rep to go up

@Flimzy lol. What's your browser of choice?

LOL.
...
If only [tag:tags] didn't lowercase words... :P

I use Iceweasel (aka Firefox) 3.6.13 on this machine.

1:08 AM
@ElendiaStarman I prefer italics for my actions. and its fewer chars ...

I have a few other versions of IW/FF on other machines

@waxeagle [chuckle] I typically just use brackets, but making them into tags is . :D

@Flimzy wow just looked and I'm running 3.6.20...and 6 is out :). I guess thats what happens with linux...

@waxeagle They actually changed they way they release their browser, so 4, 5, and 6 were released within the space of two months.

4 no longer exists
it's weird
and very annoying

1:11 AM
@ElendiaStarman I know. I keep up at work on my win 7 box. but I have a netbook with a ubuntu clone at home
@Flimzy gotta inflate your version number, to keep up with chrome an IE :)

@waxeagle Ahhhh...I see. :P

Maybe they should release FireFox 360 to keep up with the insane versioning of Windows

@Flimzy lol Windows is now on a 2 year release cycle. It should even out fairly quickly

Really?
...
Just how old is Win7 again? :P

@ElendiaStarman about 2 years, I think Windows 8 is due out fall of next year. So I guess its a 3 year cycle...

1:17 AM
@waxeagle Hmmm...t'will be interesting to see how much of an improvement it is...

@ElendiaStarman should be essentially an incremental update to 7. It will change some things, but I don't think they are planning anything drastic for a while

@waxeagle They must have learned their lesson from Vista... :P

@ElendiaStarman I'm not really sure about that. Windows ME was arguably the same thing. It will be intersting to see how many folks are using 7 when 8 comes out and how many folks are willing to switch. Note how many folks still use XP

I still use XP
I technically have a Vista installation, too, but I never use it.
Of course I very rarely use XP, either.

@waxeagle I actually haven't seen much of XP at all...

1:21 AM
@Flimzy lol, whats your flavor?

I use XP for games. I use Vista when I have to test rendering in a version of IE that won't isntall in XP. Which happens about once every... well... it's happened once.
I use Debian everywhere possible.

@ElendiaStarman it was a good system and by the time SP2 came out it was as the best Windows system that had been released and remained so until 7 came out

@waxeagle I hope that by "any other system" you mean "any other Windows system"
@waxeagle because otherwise, I think you're making a losing argument :)

@waxeagle Oh yes indeed. I remember that most people stuck with XP even through the years of Vista. However, many people switched over to Win7.

@Flimzy yeah. Edited accordingly

1:24 AM
I'm glad my "weird" questions (about UFOs and ET life) are being respected... not because I really care about the answer, but because I expect we'll get a lot of weird questions in the future, and I think it's good to accept them.

@ElendiaStarman yeah, but tons of folks are still on XP. Companies are slowly switching, but some folks are still using things that require XP (though some nice compatibility stuff is available in 7...). We have some folks in our company that regularly access a website that REQUIRES IE 6...

kinko's still uses XP
at their computer stations

@Flimzy hey, strange is strange, but on topic strange is fine :)
@Purmou ick.

@waxeagle ...wow. A website that requires IE6? [shudder]

@ElendiaStarman yeah its a document management system for one of our clients. We actually worked out a nice workaround where we install a plugin to change the UA string in the browser so its broadcasts as IE6 instead of 8 or 9

1:27 AM
@ElendiaStarman meaning == 6 not >= 6?

@Flimzy yes requires exactly 6

Ah... I've seen several banking sites that do that... for a long time I had to hack my UA string so that I could log into my bank site... because it didn't like Iceweasel... only Firefox

@waxeagle I cannot rightly comprehend how they could code so specifically. :P

I want to slap those devs with a fish for taking an overly literal interpretation of the UA strings... instead of considering the equivolency parts
It's also insane to disallow use of the site for an "incompatible" browser
if you want to show a warning, fine... but don't make it impossible to use the site

@ElendiaStarman who knows but they are a major client (8 figures a year in sales for us)...

1:29 AM
@waxeagle ...that makes it even worse! :P

I think my refresh button is overheating... so I'm gonna leave the house for a while

@Flimzy physically impossible

@Flimzy I personally just click on the banner image.

@ElendiaStarman yeah, I do too... but it's harder to make a humorous reference to that one
@Purmou Not if you're as skilled with heat lamps and blow torches as I am

@Flimzy You could talk about your mouse button overheating!

1:31 AM
@Purmou Or did you mean that leaving the house was physically imposible?

@Flimzy Then I stand corrected

@Flimzy LOL!

@Flimzy That too.

Well, I'm going afk at any rate... later :)

@Flimzy Seeya! :)

1:37 AM
I'm going to head out too
See you guys

G'night @Purmou!

@ElendiaStarman What? it's only 7 here XD

@Purmou Pfft. It's almost 10 over here! PM! :P

@ElendiaStarman east coastian? :D

@Purmou Eeeyup! ^_^

3 hours later…
4:12 AM
hey everyone

@Purmou Hallo thar!

1 hour later…
5:15 AM
@ElendiaStarman Do you think a question asking who the first followers of Christ were? As in, the very first people who decided to follow him?

Yep

Lets chat in english exchange. :)

lol, kk

user19161
5:30 AM
Of course, I never lie.

Now, to find the origine of the question...
load older messgaes.

i'll link you to the message

20 hours ago, by Purmou
or is this better suited for English language SE
just scroll up a bit
it was actually a discussion for names for humorous badges
@Flimzy could elaborate if he wants

@Jasper! you read the discussion?

user19161
5:34 AM
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū I can't read it as I am not logged in. Private beta phase only committed users can read.

user19161
Public beta is different.

@Jasper alright....
Hold tight.
we are going back.
CHAOS CONTROL

user19161
@ChaosGamerΕΛΥēelū To EL?

My meta question got closed :(

@Flimzy Aww

5:58 AM
@Flimzy everybody took it way too seriously

Indeed.
I guess I could vote to reopen it!

i'll help!

hehe, nah, I'm not gonna vote to re-open it.
If I'm going to go against the community's decision, it will be for something I think is more important than a joke

@Flimzy lol, yeah
speaking of community
i need two more answer upvotes and one question upvote
:o

ha
No, you just need 12 more good edits
or to accept 12 more answers
Just ask 12 silly questions, and I'll answer them... then you can accept my answers!
never mind that they'll be closed soon
that will give you 24 more rep
(and give me 360 more rep! muuwahahahaha)

6:07 AM
haha

and the best part is... that rep isn't limited to 200 per day!
Tell me about yourself @Purmou... what do you do for a living that allows you to spend all day on here? :)

@Flimzy I'm actually 14 years old
it's summer right now, school is starting soon

Ah

the beta was timed perfectly
School starts in about a week

Nice of them to do it that way for you then :)
Where do you live?

6:14 AM
LA, California

How long have you been a Christian (well, I'm assuming that you are one)

i was born into it
like i said in one of my questions, my parents were raised Christian
and being Armenian sort of goes hand in hand with Christianity
Armenians were the first to accept Christianity as a nation

interesting
I did not know that

I should say Armenia.
Yeah, it's a very rich history actually
You should definitely explore it when you get the chance
I actually proposed a site for Armenian Culture
our culture is really unique
and people have begun grasping on to that
it's pretty popular now
2
Armenian Culture

Proposed Q&A site for people interested in exploring the distinct culture of Armenia, such as its rich history, artistry, music, and unique cuisine.

Currently in definition.

though by the looks of it, there isn't a definitive base yet
of users currently on SE, i mean
(also, something to consider looking into for the Armenian Christianity--we celebrate our own Christmas separate from December 25th)

So you're about to start high school?

6:27 AM
indeed

Excited? Or nervous? Or both? hehe

None, really
lol

indifferent?
terrified?

The school I attend isn't a formal high school

What kind of school is it?

6:29 AM
Charter school

So how does that work?

it's a very small student population, which I think is better, because one of the goals of my school is to focus on each student individually

I mean, I know what a Charter school is... but they're all different

Well

I had a very small student population, too.

6:30 AM
my school specifically likes to focus on project-based learning

Only 2 students in my entire school, until I was in high school...
but then I was home schooled ;)
in high school, I went to a very small public school... only 32 students in my graduating class

it'll likely be even less for my class
there are about 240 total students at my school
it'll probably increase this year
but we'll see when we get there
if you'd like to learn more about it...then i suppose I could give you the link to its site.

I had about 100 or 120 students in my entire high school

yeah, my school is actually 6-12
so, it's about the same
aveson.org
there you go
if you'd like to learn more
it's actually a very nice concept of a school
it works very well for me
for others, not so much
and, actually, students get the opportunity to teach their own "electives"
and i was planning on teaching a beginner's HTML and CSS elective

that's cool
then other students get to choose your HTML/CSS class?
Or do all students have to learn your subject, and you have to learn theirs?

6:37 AM
no, the former, they get to pick
they get to choose two electives to have classes for once a week

So if nobody wants to learn HTML... you just get to play on the internet all day? hehe

pretty much :D
though i'm sure there'd be interest
we get a lot of techy students
but electives don't actually start until about october

If that's the case, I'd try to offer an elective on something like Klingon Archaelogy...
so I'd be sure nobody would show up
so I could goof off :P

haha
I should try to get that approved
my english teacher from last year does goofy stuff like that
he was going to teach a "Civil War Inspired Hip Hop and Rap" elective

hehe

6:42 AM
i have pretty ambitious plans for high school
in california, we have an option to test out of high school, and receive the equivalent of a diploma
it's called the CHSPE
California High School Proficiency Examination
I plan on taking it in 10th grade
so I get out two years early

They sorta did that where I went to HS in Kansas... my best friend graduated a year and a half early

and pursuing a career in Computer Engineering or Web Design early

And I skipped my freshman year of college
my Jr. and Sr. years of high school, I took a bunch of college courses for dual credit
so when I started college, I had more than a year's worth of credit already done

sweet

then after a semester of college, I quit, and started working full time... hehe

6:43 AM
i just plan on taking AP tests
as many as i can handle
I'm already taking AP Literature and Composition this year

I decided that studying computers wasn't for me... I was able to teach myself more effectively than the college was able to teach me

You know, I've thought about that.
I feel that I'm extremely well-versed several languages now.
and I taught myself all of it

But I may go back for some other degree at some point... if I do, I'll try to test out of a bunch of stuff, because I love to read and teach myself a lot anyway... I could probably take the CLEP test to skip a bunch of classes... on Spanish and biology... and many other things.
There are certainly some things that are hard to learn on your own... but in my experience, programming isn't one of those things.
For more theoretical CS, classes can be useful...

comp science?

And for more the hardware engineering, I think classes are useful
yeah

6:46 AM
I see
though
i absolutely want a career in computers or web design
because i just have sooooo much fun doing it. it's hard to put into words

That's what I thought when I was in HS, too
then after HS, I changed my mind
Then a few years later, a programming job landed in my lap... and that's what I do now.

you didn't even consider whether it was worth a shot?
ah

I discovered I was enjoying sysadmin type stuff more than programming
Now I have plans to start a business in a couple years... probably doing some renewable energy or organic farming stuff..

hmm

Programming is a young man's job, they say... and I think I'm beginning to see why

6:48 AM
wow, that's ambitious
that's why I want to graduate early!

I really don't want to be in this for the rest of my life... there's a lot more to life than computers :)

The principal at my high school wants me to stay to gain more knowledge

I love the job I have now, though... I get to work from home, which has allowed me to move to Mexico... I've been here over a year now, learning Spanish, making new friends, and learning a new culture

but i feel it'll be too late

I see the job I have now as an obvious gift from God...

6:49 AM
oh, i'd love to live with a new culture
that sounds like a great time

But I also feel like the job is a means to an end... it gives me the flexibility to continue my life training in other areas...
the work itself doesn't feel very meaningful... I work on a spam/virus filter... the world doesn't need more of those :)

I see what you mean.

If you can teach yourself programming, I might encourage you to study something else in school...

hmm

not to neglect computers in school... but maybe make that your minor instead of your major
use your time and money to learn something that you can't teach yourself :)

6:51 AM
what would you recommend?

I don't know your areas of interest, beyond programming and web design
so I don't know :)

(also, would you prefer to chat somewhere else? this chat interface all day is hurting my eyes :P)

haha
Add me on facebook... facebook.com/flimzy
then we can either chat there, or exchange MSN handles or something

added

7:36 AM
@Purmou You should have +2 now

ah, my edit?

8:09 AM
Good morning @Caleb

@Caleb Hi there.

Good morning peoples.
I'm feeling the ill effects of having spent till 4 am on this site, but it's another day full of new mercies.

@Caleb Heh. It's actually just past 3 for @Flimzy.

Yeah, but I can sleep late if I want to... one of the amazing things about my job.
I just have to get my work done... I don't have to keep specific hours
I'm actually working right now

Haha, indeed.

8:12 AM
which will make up for sleeping until noon :)

@Flimzy Sure you are ;)

Brilliant

I am! I'm trying to reproduce a bug in our in-house Perl DBI subclass
I can't... so I think the bug no longer exists

am i misunderstanding that, or do you want replicate a bug?

I want to reproduce it....
meaning we've observed a problem...
I'm trying to make the problem happen again, to prove the bug still exists
If I can reproduce it, then hopefully I can also debug and fix it.

8:14 AM
Ahh, I see

But the bug was filed in April of 2010
and I have a strong suspicion it was fixed long ago, but nobody closed the bug
So I have to test to see if it's still a problem
Closing the bug as invalid now.
Which I suppose means it can't go to the bathroom on its own, and it needs help crossing the street, right?

haha
the more I wait for the public beta, the more tense the private one gets. :P

8:30 AM
@Purmou Hilarious language problem. Reproduce can have more than one meaning but replicate is definitively the wrong one in the context of programming and bugs. I don't think I've ever even noticed how bizarre that lingo must e to non programmers.

@Caleb Haha, yeah.
I understand programming to a certain extent.
But I haven't explored stuff like that yet.

@Caleb: context?

any bible verses showing that God intends for humans to be born, not "created", or something similar?

@Flimzy Um .... that you be you and a potential alternate meaning just now.

Oh, of course

8:36 AM
@Flimzy Of course to whom?

to @Caleb
My mind was wrapped up in the answer I just posted...
I had momentarily completely forgotten our previous bug conversation

@Flimzy I see, lol
woah
Rep's already going down from down votes
should it be this soon?

If it means anything, I was about to down-vote Wiki's answer for not addressing the actual question...
But then I re-read the question, and realized I have no idea what the actual question is asking
so instead I down-voted the question

and VtC'd?

aye
I'm sure he'll improve the question, though, and then my VtC won't matter.
and I'll delete my comment

8:43 AM
@Flimzy I find this whole thing funny, because you just VtC'd the proposer :P

Yeah, I realize that
But, as has been said many times... down votes and VtCs are not attacks on the person... nor are they votes against the person
the are votes against the question/answer

indeed

And I think there's a very good question in there... it just needs to be cleaned up a bit. And I'm sure he'll do that.

I don't mind downvotes, it tells me I should modify the answer.
Which I should, it has no references
I'm looking for one which references how God intends humans to be born

@Purmou Isn't that just a trifle backwards? Shouldn't you have based your opinion about whether healing somebody would go against God's nature based on knowledge of what he says in his Word rather than having an idea in your head that you are trying to prove and searching through Scripture for something to fit?

8:46 AM
Psalm 139:14 is the only one that pops into my head
But it just says that we are "fearfully and wonderfully made", which could be an argument that someone born without legs is still wonderful.
Although the question is about amputees... not people with birth defects.
although they seem very related to me... so maybe the OP would consider them the same, too?

@Caleb I suppose it seems backwards, but I only did so because I was sure there was a verse to go along with my statement.
And I suppose I should have waited to answer if that was the case, heh.

@Caleb: I often do it in that "backwards" order, too... Although I usually try to find my references before submitting my answer :)

John 1:12-13
12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
this is so awfully close to what I want

@Caleb: Did you see that your "comment troll" actually posted an answer?

on my question

8:51 AM
@Purmou: I think that's speaking of spiritual birth

@Flimzy Exactly
aha
beautiful
John 3:6
6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[a] gives birth to spirit.
Flesh gives birth to flesh.
Boom.
I'm way too good.

heh
