that matches my recollection as well
which internally uses _regex.c: "Secret Labs' Regular Expression Engine"
a.k.a the SRE
although modified I believe
@SmokeDetector tpu-
00:58
@micsthepick It's PCRE-based. The exact package is regex.
@micsthepick You say that's "part" of the regex, but what you've included there really can't be evaluated without the whole thing. To evaluate the part, you would need to describe what you're trying to detect.
@micsthepick In general, lookarounds should be as deep into the regex as possible/reasonable, for performance reasons. Ideally, the first part of the regex is just plain text, as fixed individual characters are cheapest computationally to test and even a few characters greatly reduces the number of places that anything else is looked at. Performance optimization in regular expressions is largely optimizing to fail the match as quickly as possible.
@CodyGray Fewer tests prior to failure to match is usually the primary thing to look at with respect to performance, as there are orders of magnitude more failures to match than matches. IMO, that would likely be less performant, as you're guaranteed to have at least 3 additional character locations tested in every case that matches foo[\W_]*+bar. (i.e., the "bar in the lookbehind will always match). cc @micsthepick
ok I think that makes sense but I want to do some timing tests now

@micsthepick In addition to there being significant differences in timing based on both the input text and the regex, the timing differences will vary significantly depending on the regex engine, as different ones do different things in the same situation.
Off the top of my head, one example difference is: the regex package runs lookbehinds backwards through the string (and supports variable-length lookbehinds). Many other regex packages, particularly those that support only fixed-length lookbehinds, test a lookbehind by jumping back in the test string the fixed number of characters and then testing forward. In the latter type of regex engine, the bar I mentioned above won't always be tested, as the foo in the lookbehind is checked first.
There are, of course, lots of other differences, which all come down to the details of how the regex engine and/or the regex compiler was implemented.

@micsthepick You're going to need a significantly larger input string than that to see any performance difference. Microbenchmarking is hard enough under perfectly controlled circumstances. In something like Python with compiled regexes, you're really only going to be able to discern substantial differences, which requires a pretty hefty input string.

@double-beep Added +91*9547-811-592 to watchlist. However, the blacklists were not reloaded at this time. The most likely issue is another change was made on SD's master branch on GitHub and everything is waiting for CI to pass and MS to update the deploy branch. That could take a few to several minutes. If SD doesn't automatically reload the blacklists or automatically reboot after that time, then someone should investigate why that hasn't happened.

@Anerdw I guess they were reported for being promotional but on closer inspection I guess they are fine. Thanks for prodding; I'll remove my TPs
Did you ever get an email response, @tripleee?
@CodyGray nope, still nothing
Hmm, that's strange.
ArtOfCode/TRINITY: Executing automatic scheduled reboot.
I'm guessing that SE's escalations were what had the effect, and they re-enabled it without following up on related tickets?

Thoughts on how we should handle the "backlog" of watch/blacklist messages that were posted in here during the downtime? Someone can just go through and dump them into chat as normal, which would have the advantage and disadvantage of producing a noisy log for each one. Or, they could be copy-pasted into a single commit, including the possibility of attribution for the user who actually submitted them.
@tripleee Interesting. I guess that doesn't tell us too much, though. It's entirely likely that they have an automated way of disabling all forks at the same time.

@CodyGray Hmmm, I wonder how far back SD sees edited chat messages...
if so, a moderator could edit them to prepend the !!/

(still noisy, but preserves attribution and doesn't require potentially fiddly assembling of a commit. though it might not be that hard.)
I can't imagine it sees edits past the edit grace period... But I dunno. Interesting idea.
