@Mast Mhm. I don't think people would do that. Accuracy is important to everyone here.

doesn't sound bad :)

Nice!
Sounds like a solid day's work to me lol

We'll hit 5k before the reset I'm sure
Heck if we pushed we could hit 6

night all o/

And we've dipped below 19k in the queue!

8:02 PM
Later!

night!

@Makyen then revert it
but you're making work difficult since we already watched 26 independent hashes
if you're going to do this you should PROBABLY create a new watchlist just for apnews hashes

It's about the same amount of work we put into watching any other specific URL which is repeatedly used by spammers.

@Makyen you may want to, I dunno, reconsider this in the long term
because it's not going to be helpful to watch that many hashes in the future

!!/pull

I'm not sure. We're only watching the ones we actually see in spam, just like we do for other URLs spammers use. We, eventually, want to blacklist them, if they pass the blacklisting threshold. Is it really all that much additional cost (time/effort/CPU time/etc.) to watch the specific hashes?

@Makyen well, i think the core problem is that these hashes are random

can be anything, and in the very long term are untenable to keep matching on
esp. if we end up having 500 hashes watched

@ThomasWard Makyen is talking about watching specific hashes that get reused

@NobodyNada i know that, but let's say more new hashes are starting to be used too
@NobodyNada part of the same argument IMO

like, if Google Sites was used to post a lot of spam, we could watch sites.google.com, but we could also watch sites.google.com/specific_site if we see a lot of spam from one site in particular

8:12 PM
@NobodyNada you're also arguing in THAT case speicfic sites that aren't just' random hashes i think

fp feedback received on [MS] Thymeleaf Templating th:data=somesite.com || org.thymeleaf.exceptions.TemplateProcessingException: Could not parse as assignation sequence

so you have to be careful case by case here
i'm not condoning that for every site
but we have to keep in mind how many cases are we going to catch for apnews vs. an infinite number of google sites hosted pages

It's basically how we have the system set up: we watch/blacklist things which are going to be used by spammers. If we can determine a pattern, then we use the pattern. That they are using a service which uses a hash is frustrating and inconvenient, because it doesn't allow easy separation into TP/FP, except by seeing a specific hash and knowing it relates to a spam post.

once we're watching over a hundred independent hashes, come talk to me again because at that point i'll have this same argument again

8:14 PM
fp feedback received on [MS] CHMOD Codechef problem

and your argument will not be as supported because that's 100 extra hashes (and an infinite number more potentials) that you're going to be tracking again

@ThomasWard If you keep removing them every time we're almost at 30... grin

8:17 PM
Given that we're watching 23k different things, I'm not really concerned about watching a few hundred individual hashes, all of which are very quick matches (i.e. are specific characters, not even ignoring case). Given that the end goal is to individually blacklist such matches which reach the blacklist threshold, I don't really see much difference wrt. time/effort/CPU/etc.

Kinda crushed it actually lol

Oh man, that's crazy
Looks like we're at May 2020 levels now.
So we undid 4 months of gain in 4 days.

That's absolutely bonkers.

I'll bet we can hit 10k by the end of the year
And that's assuming people slow down a lot from the current pace honestly.

9:11 PM
Or clear the queue in 1 month

That would be very nice!
It's going to get a lot slower towards the end though since we're likely hitting a bunch of hard-to-handle cases.
But my guess is that it won't happen until the last 20% or so.
I did 2000 reviews today and (arguably because) I'm still stuck in 1 weight reports from 11 months ago lol

I've skipped a fair few super borderline ones... I hope someone more proficient than I can sweep those up.

Yeah those are going to be the ones left at the end. The ones nobody wanted to deal with the first time lol

@NobodyNada I created the user and was about to quickly change the config on my test instance.

9:25 PM
Wow. That one got POOFED.

I started to hack something together based on my old chatbot framework, but that hasn't been maintained for years so if you're working on something ChatExchange-based we should probably use that

@NobodyNada Well, it will be a hack, but it should be ready fairly soon (<1h).

@Makyen how about I work on the Metasmoke end then?
I can try to make a second websocket route for this thing, and add a bit of logic that says "send chat messages to the secondary account if its websocket is open, otherwise send it to the main websocket"

@NobodyNada For the initial version, there's no need. There's no need for MS work, unless we are wanting MS to be the entity to post into chat. So far, that looks like a lot more work than just having SD do it.

9:32 PM
@Makyen As metasmoke itself do not need to listen to chat replies, the process of sending a message looks like a POST to <room_url>/new

So it should not be very complicated if we add fkey to the config

@Makyen Ah, I didn't realize it was that simple

@user12986714 Yes, after logging, storing credentials, etc. While it might be a reasonable thing to do, the code isn't there and is already in SD.

@user12986714 fkey is somewhat transient though
we'd have to use a chat library to actually log in and get the fkey

So it looks like there will be less work doing that on MS end... Some web scraping

@NobodyNada Why can't we just scrap the login page and regex it?

@user12986714 that's basically what a chat library does

9:34 PM
@Makyen The only trouble I can see is that if the secondary instance dies, then we just lose MS chat messages altogether

@NobodyNada Well so I think my point here is about rolling our own because there is no such library (as I know) for ruby.

(also my fkey does not change... yet)

@NobodyNada Yes, that's why it's a hack. I'd expect the eventual solution to be that SD handles it, but this is a faster hack to get it working.

@user12986714 It doesn't change frequently, but it does change if your login session expires for some reason

@user12986714 Less work? I don't see it that way.

@Mast it's a CSRF token

@NobodyNada Same kind of token FIRE needs?

basically, it prevents a malicious site from creating a <form action=https://chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/11540/messages/new>, which would post messages from your account since it has your cookies
@Mast no, FIRE needs a token which authorizes you to use the metasmoke API

The fkey authenticates your Stack Exchange account in combination with your browser cookies

Ok

in order for a chatbot that can actually chat, the bot has to log in in order to get the right cookies, and then it also has to find the fkey somewhere

Modern stuff... In the past, you just logged in somewhere and you were authenticated.

I like me some Meta, I guess. :D

Coincidentally, I'm also about 1500 rep away from the SO privileges I want :-p
I have full edit privileges on SO and LSE, but no one ever seems to vandalize stuff on LSE...
I am in the top suggested edit reviewers list there, though! With my whopping 23 suggested edit reviews.

Best of luck. I find I can't adequately answer a lot of SO questions, even in languages with which I'm proficient (C#, VB.Net, xamarin forms). A lot of the stuff that comes in is dupe-worthy or doesn't have the required info for an acceptable answer.
My existing answers are still on borderline questions.

Extra bonus niceness to metasmoke posting these instead of SmokeDetector: it's infinitely easier to do sd 6k or whatever now that it won't tell you that half of the messages aren't reports.
