@ArtOfCode - Is there a legitimate reason my instance would be churning through hundreds of 'New IDs / Hybrid Intermediate IDs' for a long time? It's been going for at least 10 minutes now...

yes
any time it restarts after a period of downtime, it does that for every site until it's gone through them all

Hrm, so kinda sucks that Python doesn't have any spinlocks
I mean I can make my own pretty easily but it's kinda lame the only locks available are the slow context switch kind
I guess there's no point in Python with the GIL though huh
it'll have to reschedule the thread in order for the lock to ever be released

interesting

@quartata What is a spin lock?

while (lock isn't released) { /* do nothing or sleep for a really short period of time */ }
The idea is that you keep running while you're waiting for the lock, instead of going to sleep and letting something else run
But it doesn't have a point in Python as I realized because Python only lets one thread run at a time -- the Global Interpreter Lock (GIL)

6:14 PM
Ah okay
Interesting

@SmokeDetector k

@Undo I was working on that. Then my drive pooped on itself. I'll get back to it later this week. I have a new drive on the way.

@Andy Did your drive gave you warnings over smart?

No. The first SMART error occurred after failure
Helpful...

@Andy Spinny drive?

6:27 PM
Yup
I gave up trying to repair it myself. I have backups of most things, but somehow managed to leave my "development" directory out of my script. Unfortunately...that's a lot of missing stuff.
I just sent the drive out for recovery though because I need some of that stuff pretty badly

@Andy did the spinner break or is the plate itself damaged?

sigh That sucks for me, but hopefully they get most stuff back.
I didn't open it. I don't know what the issue is. The data recovery I tried is only stuff I've done in the past that worked.
Lesson for me: Better backups

If it's the motor thats broken you can easily repair it yourself
if it's the chipset you can too
if it's the plate you need a professional

I figure the simpler my backup system is, the better... so it's literally just a cron tar command

I should probably look at that Time Machine warning I keep getting...

6:32 PM
Mine was the Windows equivalent. Worked well too. I just missed a directory.

Although there's not much irreplaceable stuff on my machine. Most is on a cloud somewhere

I use a .bat file on the windows scheduler

I'm still working out what my new strategy is going to be. On the one hand...this is the first drive I've ever had fail on me and my backups did work. On the other hand...I really don't want to tempt fate again.
But, now it's just waiting for the professionals to do their thing and get back to me

I'm not sure what's going on - disk activity has basically stopped on my instance. Let's fail over again.
Who wants to take over?

@tripleee We got bit by flake8 at work. I got to be the hero there and point out that it updated.

Don't you have to fpu to unblacklist users?

No.

:thinking: ok?

fpu adds them to the whitelist.
Which excludes them from username checks, I think.
Also, !!/report automatically adds the user to the blacklist even without feedback.
So @quartata I'm not sure how successful your test was...

I was gonna post that at some point, glad it made it through without me
One wrinkle here is that we can't ask users with less than 10 rep to include more than two hyperlinks. (Unless this restriction excludes links to other questions on the site? Even so, it'll be frustrating if those folks want to link to outside documentation instead.) Maybe search strings as @MartinJames suggested? — Jon Ericson ♦ Oct 18 at 19:40
@JonEricson Maybe it's time to revisit the link restriction. What was it put there for, and what does it do now? If anything, allowing people to put unlimited hyperlinks in their post would make it easier for SmokeDetector and others to catch them. — Undo ♦ Oct 19 at 19:17
