Git tends to get given out when someone has a demonstrated ability to write Python (i.e. PRs) and is trusted to not be an idiot with them. Our code admins satisfy the latter, but mostly not the former.

@SurajRao I know we've suggested that a couple of times and sorta decided to drop it, but I just came up with a good idea: maybe Smokey could simply post the FR/whatever to a GH project on one of the repos, then if we decide it's worth discussing/adding we can convert it to an issue

somebody with too much free time on their hands could try to analyze the domain names they use, I think there's probably a weekly rhythm and possibly some sort of system for which ones to use when (Towers of Hanoi?)

my particular pet peeve is how it doesn't agree with Emacs about indentation when basically the entire rest of the world is fine with the indentation offered by Python mode

BACK UP YOUR DAMN DATA!
5
That is all

@SmokeDetector k

2:25 PM
@Andy I smell someone who lost something
Corollary: If you have a backup and never test the restore, you have no backup
3

@Magisch The good news is that everything I had in my backup script backup'd up wonderfully. I've tested it many times and was confident that it works. It does! The bad news...apparently I missed some rather important directories and never noticed they weren't in the backups. I'm missing about 300GB of data and my efforts to recover them are not doing well.
Data recovery is expensive too

300GB in forensic recovery will cost you five or six figures depending on how you deleted it
from a very rough guesstimate of mine

I already have the quotes :)

@Andy was I close?

The mid-range quotes are about $3000
that's for the entire drive to be recovered, not specific files
Apparently, that's easier

@Andy Was that for the business you work for?
I spent all day re-configuring our physical access keyfobs and the permission groups they're seperated into :p

@Magisch Nope. All personal stuff. Which sucks for me personally, but doesn't impact work.

turns out 13 year old timekeeping software that also does door access isn't easy or intuitive at all

gasp

I found out tho that it was unconfigured before

4:34 PM
meaning anyone with a rfid keyfob from that manufacturer could walk into our door
but nobody ever tried and it never came up

I found out a week or so ago that our uni NFC ID cards use a known-vulnerable scheme... which I could break, and change the ID stored in a card

whispers Do it

If there was a purpose to it... yeah, I could do
but I need my card to contain my ID so that I can do things like release print jobs

@Magisch cough someone hasn't read the laws of security administration recently

@ArtOfCode The worst you can do with that is still limited by your windows account's auth level on the database
which is constrained to exactly what you need
Then again windows domains aren't a bastion of security either

so I'll just crack your CEOs password then :P

funnily our CEO (one of the two) has next to no access

4:40 PM
okay, your IT admin then :)

the other ceo has less access then his secretary
You'd have to get his windows login and not his erp login
And then log into his pc specifically

that wasn't the point, though

Secretaries make better targets than CEOs for access.

Even if you get the database login from one of the admins, it's useless to you without also a windows login and a database server login

Law #6 of security administration: there really is someone out there trying to guess your passwords

4:41 PM
Well, not like I could change it anyways
new application uses salted and peppered bcrypt

:+1:
even more points for using scrypt, but bcrypt is good

I highly doubt someone will deploy a mass distributed FPGA cracking attack against us

hehe

that's all that bcrypt is vulnerable to afaik
And yes I know how these work, ish :p
I read somewhere that scrypt is arguably less safe because it's too new

Depends who you ask
Its theory is sound, and its implementation has been subject to at least some vetting, but it's obviously not as much as PBKDF2 or bcrypt

4:45 PM
Imo unless you're important enough that someone will build FPGA clusters specifically for you bcrypt is enough
I think
But I'm not a cryptographer and don't pretend to be

@ArtOfCode Are you majoring in cryptography, btw?
