@ThomasWard I still don't think a rewrite is needed, but I do think some of the stuff NG is working on could be ported to Smokey.
Nice work on the conversion to Py3

@Andy thanks. I wrote in the comment you made about why porting that back to Smokey isn't feasible, it's got a completely different project structure than the existing Smokey system.
and is nowhere near the place where we could even consider importing those changes back in to the core repository - that's why it's 'ng' and not in its own branch
Py2 -> Py3 is pretty easy if you know what you're doing lol. shot

We should have created an NG team for that repo

7:41 PM
and there's no pythonic alternative apparently to get git data out of git :/
the subprocess calls just 'error'

YIKES look at the comments

@ThomasWard Didn't we resolve this issue already? Why is it working in Py2 but not Py3?

@NobodyNada wow....

@Andy Well...
@Andy in Py3, os.popen is deprecated
so we have to replace it with standard Popen calls
but it's not getting the data to git for some reason, so git returns hits help message and all blows up in our faces.
wow okay that's... odd.
hang on

Why aren't we using a library to handle this?
instead of issuing system calls

7:47 PM
@Andy because the only library for git is sh, and Windows sucks, so they don't support Windows?
this was a workaround to make it work without the sh lib, and also to make it work in testsuites for Py2 on Windows.
I think I have a solution
standby.

J F
By stands

lol

@ThomasWard That's what you're going with? Come on. You can do better than that. GitPython - Windows semi-supported; PyGit2 (requires libgit2), Dulwich which has both windows and non packages
10 seconds of Googling.

We're using Dulwich for NG
GitPython and PyGit2 need natives sadly

I'm just asking why we went with system calls though. There could be valid reasons. I've not used any of those packages
@quartata, What OS do you develop on?

7:52 PM
Linux
I'm going to set up Appveyor for Windows testing of NG though
it's not quite as nice as sh

@Andy lazy, and we have sh git elsewhere.

@ThomasWard I accept that answer over your previous one :)

@Andy GitPython: GitPython is not suited for long-running processes (like daemons) as it tends to leak system resources.
out of the running.
pygit2: Pretty sure we can't force people to compile things on Windows at runtime
out of the running.

@ThomasWard Not at runtime
Just when you install

@quartata same bloody difference

7:56 PM
ok ok yes

you know what i meant, don't nitpick

As the Windows user representative in here, I'd install something extra to get Git to work. Just put it in the installation instructions.

It's not an install thing

(and explain why, without using the phrase "Windows sucks")

You have to build from source
and it's hard even on Linux
source: I did it

7:58 PM
@Andy I'll still claim "Windows Sucks" regardless.
dulwich doesn't have a log command.
also out of the running.

@ThomasWard That's really off putting, just so you know. My development environment is Windows. It's what I use for work and as much as I'd love to switch sometimes, I can't.
