Do I not have a source file somewhere?
it's looking for it in the current working directory?
that's the problem then -- I'm running it with Xcode
I'll copy it
Ooh, good idea
Great, it worked! Nice job!

12:34 AM
silence

sd 2poof
@quartata there

What are you using for timing?
I meant the whole benchmarking code. But I think I know your problem
So you're just calling gettimeofday before and after, right?

do you know what the problem is?

I assume that for 0 us the timer is too imprecise to show a difference and for 502 us the process is giving up its timeslice.
But I'd have to see code so

@quartata that's probably it

12:39 AM
Kind of an odd timeslice if so, are you using a realtime kernel?

Use a timer that's intended for profiling instead of a generic timer, they tend to work better

500 μs looks way shorter than a reasonable timeslice

@ArtOfCode I actually don't know how high_resolution_clock works on Windows, it might not be any better

@quartata it's Ubuntu this is running on

@ArtOfCode WSL?

12:41 AM
The Internet says Windows' timeslice is 10-20 milliseconds

@quartata yeah. Ubuntu
WSL is a full Ubuntu install

It might be that gettimeofday just has a low resolution

I'd be surprised if the hypervisor didn't do something weird with the clock interrupts though.
@QPaysTaxes Have you tried RDTSC?

@quartata there's no interface between Windows and this code, though. It's running totally under Ubuntu.

The Time Stamp Counter (TSC) is a 64-bit register present on all x86 processors since the Pentium. It counts the number of cycles since reset. The instruction RDTSC returns the TSC in EDX:EAX. In x86-64 mode, RDTSC also clears the higher 32 bits of RAX and RDX. Its opcode is 0F 31. Pentium competitors such as the Cyrix 6x86 did not always have a TSC and may consider RDTSC an illegal instruction. Cyrix included a Time Stamp Counter in their MII. == Use == The Time Stamp Counter was once an excellent high-resolution, low-overhead way for a program to get CPU timing information. With the advent of...

12:44 AM
@QPaysTaxes AFAIK, the WSL kernel has direct hardware access

@ArtOfCode Wow, that sounds highly problematic.

@quartata would you not need to use assembly to get that though?

@QPaysTaxes Yeah.

@QPaysTaxes sure, but if you know your clock speed...
@quartata ...how?

but if you can get the clock rate...

12:45 AM
@NobodyNada Some compilers have an intrinsic, and inline assembly is not that hard if they don't.

@QPaysTaxes cpu_cycles / 3700000000 = seconds

@QPaysTaxes This is as real time as it gets
Most C benchmarks are in cycles anyways.

@ArtOfCode but doesn't the computer scale down the clock speed sometimes?

@NobodyNada that... sounds unlikely?

or increase it with Turbo Boost
@QPaysTaxes have fun; see you later

12:47 AM
you'd need to physically underclock the processor to get it to run at a lower clock speed

@ArtOfCode Linux clobbering Windows's interrupt vectors comes to mind
I'm pretty sure there's a hypervisior. Microsoft loves its hypervisiors.
@QPaysTaxes You mean you don't want to count time spent blocking?

@quartata AFAIK they just both have an interrupt hook

My machine runs at 2.5 ghz normally, but it can dynamically increase it up to 3.7 ghz with Turbo Boost
@QPaysTaxes file system access time is going to be dictated by your hard drive speed and your operating system's caching

@QPaysTaxes I'm pretty sure it'll keep track of that, unless Linux resets it for some reason
Which it's not supposed to do

@QPaysTaxes My point is that unless your code is really, really, really inefficient, you're not going to make much of a difference with software
@QPaysTaxes \o
Huh, this is interesting

12:51 AM
Okay, so it looks like the kernel is emulated, but on x64 the syscall mechanism is the same.

I have to eat dinner; see you later!

!!/alive?

@quartata Kinda sorta

What does that mean?

means it's kinda sorta alive
Heh. Apparently I'm still too used to Windows; I was about to push my max dynamic underclock down a bit further - through the registry.
(and yeah, apparently dynamic underclocking is a thing, @NobodyNada)

1:05 AM
Jeez, Smokey, no spam at all? I've been waiting an hour and a half to test this...
This always happens to me.
!!/blame

@quartata It's QPaysTaxes's fault.

@quartata whatcha trying to test
(but yeah, 0100Z is not a good time for spam)

@ArtOfCode The skeleton I have of this command line MS watcher

need websocket data?

Nah I need a real post since I'm retrieving data about it from the API

1:09 AM
@quartata what keys do you need for that to work? I can push a good-enough-fake that it'll work

Right now just /posts/<id>/reasons but a fake will mess up anyone else listening

@quartata So... where do you get id from?
websocket message?

The post ID sent by the websocket. (It's in message.(flagged|not_flagged).post.id, right?)

@quartata one of those is correct, but I have a nasty feeling the other isn't

Hm?

1:14 AM
Yeah, okay, those are right
they're sent slightly differently, which is why I thought one was wrong, but they should both resolve
so, test post coming your way in a moment
ping

Probably did something wrong because nothing changed. One moment.

I sent {"flagged":{"post":{"id":61784}}}

Will that get wrapped in message by actioncable

yeah
it'll be stringified in whatever the message's data field is

OK I see a problem but I should have gotten an error message...
Try again?
Did you send it? A bunch of blank lines just showed up...

1:20 AM
Yeah, sent a couple minutes ago

OK I probably didn't notice until now.

need another one?

No, not yet.
@ArtOfCode Try again?

ping

I see... another problem
my $post = $msg->{"flagged"} or $msg->{"not_flagged"} or die;
Jeez, why did I do that??
And why isn't it doing it more importantly??
All right I need a log file
@ArtOfCode Try again?

1:34 AM
this is what you get for writing in perl
ding

@ArtOfCode Har har.
One more time? I think I got it.

schming

Yeah, OK. message is a string not a dictionary, right?
I have to decode it again

aye
also, who was it that came up with "Repeated url at end of long post"?
because that thing is accurate

Ugh, now I have to smear my code in decode_json...
> my $msg = decode_json(decode_json($_[1]->body)->{"message"}) or return;
actually that's not even right

1:39 AM
looks like @tripleee?

since message isn't guaranteed to be there
Yeah but that's even uglier.
I'd rather just decode it in the next line
Stop perpetuating the perl is ugly stereotype
@QPaysTaxes I don't think it does?
That would be saline

1:57 AM
@ArtOfCode yep, tripleee

I mean, alternation

@JanDvorak I don't get what you mean. Feedback is still arriving here, what are we missing?

Feedback now arrives to chat in large batches long after the corresponding reports, long after I reply to them with FIRE

Just scroll up a bit

Hmm. Mine arrives immediately, assuming I'm the first manual (FIRE) flagger.
