Does Smokey have a feed?

@wizzwizz4 you mean from where it gets all the q's once they are active?

@AshishAhuja No. I mean a MS feed.

uh, so you mean like a API for MS?

I couldn't find one, so I presume no, but I found a JSON feed-like thing.

oh, so you're talking about xml feeds?

1:56 PM
Yes. RSS, specifically.

ah. Unfortunately, there's nothing like that
why do you need one?

@SmokeDetector F

Auto-chatbot.

@wizzwizz4 "auto", what do you mean by that? I'm not getting you..

Instead of having a user posting stuff, a feed user (negative number) could.

1:58 PM
why would you want that?

@AshishAhuja There's already integration.
Plus, I could have my machine poll for feeds and make a loud noise when there's spam without having to write a custom script.
But if it's not there, I'll use the things that are (i.e. JSON).

@wizzwizz4 there's already a script for that..
hold on, lemme get a link
heh, I can't find a link. It belonged to zaq IIRC.. lemme search his repos

Hey Wizz. Welcome to Charcoal!

@M.A.R. Thank you.
I've been here before, but only lurking.
Everyone else is faster at flagging! :-)

2:04 PM
@AshishAhuja That... is a much better way of doing it than I was doing.
It doesn't make any extra requests to MS.

ah great. Do note that the person who wrote the script is no longer contributing to Charcoal so if there's a bug or something you'll have to fix it yourself.
@wizzwizz4 I don't know JS at all, but it's also possible that the script does not make any calls to the API because that time the API wasn't implemented IIRC
you'll have to ask @ang or @art or any other JS guru to ask which is the better way I guess..

@AshishAhuja The script just listens on the chat window and makes a loud noise whenever Smokey posts.

yeah, that seems like a simple and nice way

The API gives more flexibility, but requires work.

@wizzwizz4 There’s also coal, which is a desktop app that notifies you when Smokey posts a report.

Idea: What about a filter for questions where none of the tags are present in the body or title?

@JF Sometimes there's no need to mention a tag in the body or title if it's already mentioned in the tags.

@JF That would fail at the most upvoted question of stackoverflow because of the tag branch-predictionhttps://stackoverflow.com/questions/11227809/why-is-it-faster‌-to-process-a-sorted-array-than-an-unsorted-array

Also, many tags have particular names which might be unlikely to appear in the body of relevant questions - for instance, the #1 most popular tag on each of Science Fiction & Fantasy and Movies & TV.

@JF looks like someone needs to request authorization for the app before I can authorise third party access - might be a case of you just trying to add it and I'll see what pops up in the settings

So we're not adding :reviewer anymore?

That's the idea
buncha new people in from Meta who don't know the first thing about feedback, so

makes sense, I suppose. Removing the other bit of code that would irritate us.
Any Real Issues with that?

Any reasons Ask Different and Graphics Design (and maybe The Workplace) are not in this list‌?

I don't see any

I'll make a PR to add them.

5:35 PM
@Glorfindel Shouldn't we check to see if existing posts are marked as spam first?

That'd be quite hard as this is not a simple regex. I think the method was devised to catch new types of spam on major spam targets quicker. Nowadays, we have different spam targets than before when the method was created.

@Glorfindel Couldn't one just spin up a second instance and run it without flagging privileges, then read the logs?

I think it's quite hard to have a separate Smokey instance re-evaluate old posts.
That means I trust my own judgements in this case :)

5:53 PM
If we really wanted to, metasmoke could feed Smokey posts to evaluate and we'd just throw them in the API queue. That'd be a bunch of work in tracking stuff, though.
... maybe not, actually. It'd be an interesting project.

@Undo If one could feed Smokey an arbitrary string and get Smokey to evaluate it...

!!/test
That's already possible :)

@wizzwizz4 Not that simple, though.

6:03 PM
A 'post' is a complex object; not really amenable to testing from chat beyond extremely simple cases

@Undo Is the system modular enough to allow one to treat localhost as a SE site?

you could, but it'll try to ask the SE API for questions from 'localhost' which isn't gonna work

@Undo :-) So, if I were to set up a subset of the SE API...

heh
It'd be easier to special-case

@Undo I might dig through Smokey's source later.

@SmokeDetector "API quota rolled over"... Have you switched to a new user?

No.

@wizzwizz4 No. That happens every so often to ensure Smokey does not run out of API calls (there is a limit).

It's a per day thing.

Ok. How does one make the quota roll over? It seems like something that could easily be abused, and that removes the point of API throttling.
Unless it's 24hrs since the last rollover... in which case it's SE's side.

@AshishAhujaツ we get a quota of 10k requests per day to the API
Jul 23 '16 at 11:09, by ArtOfCode
at some point every 24 hours, that quota resets
It has been rolling over sometime after 6 PM (UTC) for the last few days

@wizzwizz4 We dont control that
The quota just rolls over on its own once a day

@Magisch Ok. That makes more sense now.
I thought that it was something Smokey did to ensure that it doesn't run out of API calls, which confused me.

we do restart Smokey intentionally every so often as part of the code to make sure the socket can 'stay open'

Basicly we have 10.000 requests a day
and SE decides when the new day starts for that purpose
@wizzwizz4 We bundle requests to do that
As you may know, SE gets way more then 10k posts a day

@ArtOfCode I actually think that the "Allowing the spam to get posted and then removing it seconds later" is the reason we get such dumb and uncreative spammers
The "proof of work" that spammers show to their employers when conducting professional spam campaigns may well just be a screenshot / timestamp of the thing being posted and visible to the world. So as long as they get their proof of work, they may just not care to make it stick more then 3 views or 20 seconds.

IDK, I just put it in the (for me) logical place.
What's wrong with the current place?

J F
The fact that it’s complicated to determine if you’ve added it or not — the thing I’ve set up for the feedbacks & autoflagging info automatically handles that.
Plus it supports updates.

It's only complicated because the lookbehind regex didn't compile.
And the value doesn't change, so it doesn't need to be updated.
I don't really mind if it's moved, though. But it'll require more characters to make clear what it is - right now it's in the functional sweet spot.
