@angussidney yeah, long since handled, with @ArtOfCode. You were CC'd by Art for situational awareness
but it was about that. I just happened to raise ArtOfCode in the TL before I could raise you :)
goes back to poking python code

I'd quite literally turned up 10 seconds after Thomas pinged me in TL, and 10 seconds before he pinged me here

yup

BTW, why did you ping me in the first place? I'm not a mod, so I couldn't have done much

@angussidney your name was on the commit
and Art later told me he authed the commit to be done by you

12:30 AM
Ah, right

so I turned the evil towards @ArtOfCode

aye, I was on mobile at the time

Same here

But something to remember in general - if you think something needs to be done now, you don't necessarily have to wait for approval from "higher-ups" (do we really even have those?). If you're confident in what you're doing, just go ahead and do it - nobody's going to jump on you for it if you do something in good faith. That goes for everyone.

@ArtOfCode true statement, but I needed the justification before I went and swung the hammer :)
I operate in bureaucracy mode. Since I've not been given "SaltAndBurnOnRedAlert" privileges :P

12:32 AM
And, of course, if it affects hardware security, the hardware host always has final authority.

@ArtOfCode And it can be easily reverted anyway, so no worries if the cat jumped on [Enter] when you were out of the room

@ThomasWard meh, if you have privileges, we trust you. If we start having any official sort of hierarchy (beyond "these people know quite a lot" or "these people host hardware"), then Charcoal and our development pattern will stop working as we know it.

This thing runs on people doing things on their own authority, and then getting peer-reviewed by passing eyes. Of course I'm happy to give a second opinion on things if you're not confident in what to do, but neither I nor @Undo are top-dog-will-veto-everything-just-because-we-can type people, and we figured out early on that it's best to just let people do things.

If we're talking about "official" or "serious" hierarchy, I'm no more today than I was when I first turned up here - I just happen to have been around a while and have picked up a fair old chunk of knowledge and experience.

If that's supposed to be Python, use snake case names please... ;)

@ByteCommander pseudocode. not Python

You probably should use user id's since usernames aren't unique

what @Art is saying is that you kinda are the top dog. He who runs the hardware...

@Ferrybig again, Pseudo Code :P
@Undo An interesting concept... understandable though :)
@Undo that said, it still needed followed up on :)

@ArtOfCode and without Smokey, CharcoalHQ doesn't exist. >:D

@ThomasWard Sure, if you feel more comfortable doing that. Just know that you really don't need to

Yeah, I also declare my code snippets with syntax errors to be just pseudocode ;)

Until we start falling below 500 left, I'm not really concerned

It's trending down, though. Better to head it off early IMO

and we also have a reply on it, @Undo, in case you hadn't seen it

I saw it
It's not like there's anything private, so we'll do this:

TL;DR: Pops got caught up with 2016, because 2016. It's still his top initiative, and he's currently trying to get hold of a dev who knows the API to actually discuss our request with

Not posting the reply because it wasn't sent with expectation that it'd be screenshotted here, but that ^ is a good tldr.

@Undo is that reply safe enough for me to see privately or also mod-agreement-signees-only?

@angussidney there's nothing private about it - just that Pops sent it in reply to Undo's email, which was only between Undo, Pops, and me. I'd be happy to forward it, honestly, but I'm making it @Undo's call because I'm a serial responsibility shirker.

Also, did someone turn off the emails to notify admins about changes to autoflagging settings?

how many times have i spammed? 0

That wasn't me calling you a spammer, just a general comment

well that is the accusation from mods

If they've made that allegation, there'll be strong evidence to back it up.

2:18 AM
you can't prove it
most flags of mine are "helpful"
i recently asked a question with 30 upvotes

@MarkYisri the mere presence of "you can't prove it" in this doesn't fill me with confidence.

^^^ evidence for my innocence

On the contrary: moderators have tools that let us prove these kinds of things very easily.

after all my helpful answers, i get this?
lets say i did it, then never did it agsin
then what?
i live under a cloud?

@MarkYisri helpful answers have nothing to do with this. Once your suspension is up, Stack Exchange sites forgive and forget, and let you carry on as you were. They can do that because they operate differently to how we do here.

2:23 AM
so you don't forgive and forget

We're a community project, and hence we can add/remove users from our priviliged lists as we see fit. It's entirely subjective and the decision is ours to make.

As I said to someone this morning, Charcoal operates almost entirely on trust. We'd like to forgive and forget, but we can't do that if we still have concerns about behaviour.

We rely on the trust of our users. "Forgetting" is not appropriate in this case. We require that trust. As such, you have to (re)earn it

how?

If moderators have accused you of spamming, then you're either gonna need to comprehensively refute their accusation, to their satisfaction, or you're gonna need to be open and honest - hold up your hands, say "I did this, and it was wrong", and then show us through good behaviour and positive participation that we can trust you.

2:27 AM
but no matter what i do, they will always have "evidence"
so i'm forced to lie?

@Mark I'm gonna ask you a question, which I'd like you to answer honestly: What have you been accused of, and are those accusations correct?

Yes. But your participation as we get further in time from those events begins to rebuild that trust. So, yes, something happened but when you can show you've changed over a period of time that's good

i have been accused of:
1. spamming (no)
2. vote iinflation (yes)
num 2 i wont do again

Bear in mind, of course, that I know what information moderators have access to that informs their messages, and also that a dishonest answer to that is not going to reflect well on you.

i'm not lying!
show me "information"

2:34 AM
Okay, thanks.

Since you were straight with me, I'll be straight with you. I believe the moderators. I have high confidence in the tools and information available, and in the moderators in question. That said, I can also accept that there are allowances that may or may not apply - if you take 'spamming' to mean something other than I do, then your answer is truthful to you, even if it's not the same as the mods or I think, for example.
I hope you can also accept that even an allegation of spamming is something this room will take very seriously - it is, after all, exactly what we're here to prevent.

define spamming then

To be honest, we're also trying to maintain a decent-ish relationship with meta. Having a recent offender around doesn't help much. Having a reformed offender around isn't bad at all... but you have to prove it.
Right now, your attitude isn't inspiring confidence that you're on the path to the latter. It can change fast, but I'm not getting good vibes.

So. It's good that you're being open about the voting issues; thank you. That's a good start to helping people trust you. If you're serious about wanting privileges here so you can help fight spam, I'd recommend that you spend the next few weeks or probably months demonstrating a commitment to that. How I'm not going to elaborate on, because then I'd be doing the work for you.

2:47 AM
@MarkYisri if tou have to ask that, that's not a good sign.
I'd like to make a suggestion that people need to be active on a site for 12 months before being given privileges. I highlight active, as some people open accounts and do nothing for months or even years. @ArtOfCode @Undo

@YvetteColomb hm. Y'all know me, I don't really like hard thresholds

@YvetteColomb I don't know that we really need a rule around that. I can count the instances we've had issues on one hand, and I suspect we've picked up more good people than we've picked up bad people.
Maybe a good guideline, but I'd rather give trust first and let it be broken
If we were running a nuclear processing plant or something, that'd be different, but damage potential here is minimal.

3:03 AM
'but damage potential here is minimal' - for the moment. If all this stuff with Pops goes through, we need to be much more strict

@ArtOfCode stack exchange is about hard thresholds though, so when/if it is linked with SE officially, you may need hard thresholds
@angussidney agree.

@angussidney Do we, though?
Depends on the implementation

Yes
Hence I didn't specify how much more strict, just that we need to tighten things up somehow

Suppose we go with using the metasmoke autoflagging system as a base for this. Feedback doesn't matter to it and we're still getting >99.9% accuracy from it.
I'd be perfectly fine if 'integration' actually meant "ya'll can case up to 5 flags at your discretion"

@SmokeDetector that answer is an FP but I think the user should remain blacklisted at least for the next few days

@tripleee f unblacklists

@tripleee User is not blacklisted (33246 on puzzling.stackexchange.com).

@tripleee sd f is an alias for sd fpu- which also unblacklists

@tripleee User blacklisted (33246 on puzzling.stackexchange.com).

so marking as false positive in FDSC does that, too? I was under the impression it did only fp
but it's not clear from what action exactly the user was removed from the blacklist anyway

@tripleee I'm not sure exactly if it does but I think so

metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/post/52376 has two fp- feedbacks only
one of which is mine, from FDSC
@angussidney ah there
there are two NAA/abusive posts and one FP from this user this morning so let's keep him on the radar for a little while longer

hmm, if I flag as spam, I am still able to add a downvote after that
or do you mean the downvote changes from implicit to explicit in this case?
(by "implicit" I mean the kind where the downvote registers in the database but is not displayed, as when you click the down arrow on a site where you don't have the privileges to cast downvotes properly)

@tripleee Flagging as spam makes community downvote the post
but you can still add your own downvote, so you can downvote twice, effectively.

Not that you should

Not sure why you would (whether spam gets deleted as -6 or -9 is irrelevant)

@Magisch nope, f is short for fp-, fpu- whitelists the user

@Magisch I routinely do that to communicate "not welcome" even to users who don't have the privileges to downvote, flag, etc, as well as hopefully to the spammer, should they ever happen to visit

I recall posting a meta question about moving the downvote tooltip so it doesn't overlap the flag link but I can't find it now
there was some discussion about the practice there as well
oh, deleted Dec 16 as "dead" meta.stackexchange.com/questions/286557/…
