@ArtOfCode So are we supposed to spam flag them or not?
12:06
rude/abusive would be more like it I guess
I'm thinking it doesn't hurt to have them visible in Metasmoke but I seem to be a minority here
I'm going to NOP them, probably
seems even the locals are throwing up their arms
which is precisely where having automation and a systematic approach ought to help
even if we don't have a solution yet
I'd rather say more insight is needed. And we don't have that. Metasmoke can collect stats, but that's not much more than what the eye can see.
@tripleee That's fine as long as we given clear guidance on exactly how to handle them
@DavidPostill Nothing's changed. If it's spam, spam flag it. If it's not, don't.
12:10
@DavidPostill well, the guidance seems to be "here's a flame thrower. Do your best, but I'll put you to jail if you aim it at good people"
@tripleee this is one of the cases where a natural language approach would work better than Humans with Regexes ™
@tripleee The problem is that this has to be human-controlled and you have to have seen a handful of them to see the pattern. So, even if Smokey detects them, we need to teach all Smokey users not to react like David Postill did on my accidental report.
humans suck, but computers can't be trusted either?
@JanDvorak on the contrary, they always work as programmed.
Which is the real problem: programmers can't be trusted either.
A computer always does what you tell it to. Never what you want it to.
12:13
… which is the definition of a bad fairy.
@JanDvorak Yes, but that’s not really the problem. You do not need any particular guidance or experience to deal with Smokey reports. You need particular guidance to deal with those posts.
agreed
What would work (to just give an example) would be a Smokey fork that posts these posts to a particular chatroom for people who know what they are doing.
I'd prefer something simpler
So do I, any ideas?
Would a pinned message suffice?
12:17
Smokey posts to many rooms, doesn’t it?
Yes. What's left is to get it to pick room based on matched patterns rather than just sites. I haven't seen the relevant code, but it shouldn't be hard
The tricky part will be coming up with the patterns, though
@JanDvorak we have a facility to filter rooms down to specific reasons
unless you want a rule like "dump every new question on ELU to elu-watchers", that is.
@ArtOfCode nice.
The problem is that we see some (manually reported) instances of spam and abusive posts on EL&U (which we eventually want to be detected by Smokey) as well, see here.
If someone can come up with some consistent textual characteristics of these LQ posts on EL&U, I'm happy to help out by getting Smokey to scan for and report them to EL&U.
12:22
Amend the report syntax to point reports to specific rooms?
This should probably done in a specially modified fork of Smokey that (a) doesn't post here, (b) doesn't communicate with metasmoke, and (c) doesn't have any of the usual spam filters.
@ArtOfCode We should get a considerable amount (though not all of them) by filtering by checking for 1) Short questions mentioning an English tense by new users on ELU. 2) New users with typically Indonesian names posting a question on ELU.
@Wrzlprmft got an algorithm or regex for detecting Indonesian names?
Easy enough for humans, computers might have trouble
NLP is hard
@ArtOfCode one of the EL&U mods has collected quite a few of these posts. You could ask him for transcripts.
12:24
I don't think I can identify Indonesian names.
(1) is easy enough, it's a length check, a rep check and a list of tenses; all stuff we've already got built in.
@ArtOfCode Obtain list of Indonesian names from the Internet and match.
@Wrzlprmft that might be quite a long list.
though we could always throw 'em in a resource file
lemme see if this is even possible, to start with
If Indonesian names work like Czech first names, it's just 365 of them
@ArtOfCode I didn’t say that it would be easy.
12:26
> Nobody said it was easy
> No one ever said it would be so hard

Looks like this is indeed possible.
Also want to find an EL&U mod and ask if this is something they even want

@JanDvorak not 732?
Actually, yes, more like 730. But then you have Adam and Eve sharing the same name, and not having opposite-gender counterparts
12:37
@JanDvorak What happens to the names in a leap year? ;p
You get a gap
@JanDvorak The person has no name?
@JanDvorak more like 730 – what happens to people born on St. Tib’s day?

@DavidPostill au contraire. If a person celebrates his birthday on the same day he celebrates his name day, he'll hate his parents forever.
@JanDvorak According to behindthename.com/names/usage/czech there are 375 names
Nice find
In the Czech Republic, each day of the year except national holidays corresponds to a personal name. People celebrate their name day ("svátek" or more formally "jmeniny") on the date corresponding to their own given name. In the past, parents were not allowed to choose just any name for a child. This has changed, although it is still common to choose the name from the name day "calendar" and any highly unusual name has to be approved by a special office. The original list was the Roman Catholic calendar of saints, but many changes were made to reflect the present-day usage of names. The name day...
Oh, nvm. Feb29 has a name.
It's also quite common in France.
TIL today ... :)
12:43
@JanDvorak So you have names associated with a day, but you do not name children after the day they were born on?
Correct
Otherwise I would have been Naděžda
I don't even think you can give that name to a boy
@JanDvorak Where did the name day tradition come from? Is it some religious thing?
Check the wiki, I have no idea about the history
Ah I see. Calendar of Saints.

Given that Jesus didn't even celebrate his own birthday... Catholics have been doing some really weird stuff.

If we duplicate Smokey to deal with EL&U's problems, it'll be in another room. I'm also going to make it an explicit privilege re-request so that I know people in there know what's going on. So: if this happens, who wants privs there?
