2:00 PM
@DavidPostill It has stayed at roughly that for the entire day
Lets see what the next couple of days hold

@ArtOfCode Well documented. I'll say it: The data shows that India votes for Indians.

We have to live with it
Nothing we can do

Aye

People get to vote however they please and owe us no justification

pore Gramer for Eva

2:10 PM
I wouldn't mind if Jigar was just removed as being completely unqualified and a danger to the site.
But that's not a thing we do.

That would be unprecedented and not something SE would ever do

I'm a little spooked with how elections go in 2016

If he gets elected moderator (he might, if the effect intensifies in the actual voting), we'll have to live with that

We already got Trump elected. There's nothing worse these elections can cause

@Magisch If he gets elected moderator, you can bet your life that the SO mods - and the rest of the SE mods, if he turns up in TL - will give him a swift reality check

2:12 PM
@Magisch but the effect would split between jigar and bhargav

ji-who?

@dorukayhan Primaries, multi-vote.

@ArtOfCode Outside of kicking him out (which is a long process that I understand is used very rarely) what could the SO mods do?
If he just decided to do what he wants?

@Magisch oh, that would go over VERY POORLY

If he goes doing what he wants, he will get kicked out
and not by the mod team - the CM's will come along and do it forcefully, bypassing the entire process

2:14 PM
Unprecedented, yes, but you're asking what a bunch of volunteer programmers would do if asked to put up with something they really don't like.

I'm biased in that I'm also a candidate, but his answers to the comments don't lead me to believe he'll do anything but reopen questions en masse and force people to be much nicer to new people.

Yeah, that'll get him de-diamonded pretty quick

I've been ignoring the whole election for now

Not in and of itself against site principles

@Magisch Beyond the bounds of what a moderator does.

2:16 PM
@Magisch Yeah it is. Closure and reopening is meant to be a community process that mods only override in the most blatant or exceptional cases.
2

^ that

I suppose
It comes down to how much the SO mods would have a problem with that
The hopeful part of me thinks enough that this won't become a thing

Ask Undo, but I'd say they'd have quite a lot of a problem with that.

@Magisch Probably, but 2016 elections....

@Undo I'll refrain from being salty until after the elections are over

2:18 PM
You're talking about a group of volunteers who have spent years babysitting this site. They're not about to want to see their efforts go to waste.

Maybe I'll conserve my salt for all the league of legends games in the winter break

Personally, I'd feel obligated to give him a fresh start... but as soon as (and if) he starts generating complaints over this kind of stuff, I won't be happy

@Undo definitely

Every elected moderator whether or not I supported their candidacy will start with a pretty strong presumption of good faith for me personally

2:19 PM
Yeah, that. When Rand al'Thor was elected on SciFi... to put it lightly, he was not held in high regard by most of the rest of SE mods. Fresh start was granted mandated by the CM's, and now at least a majority of people recognize that he's actually a pretty good mod.

Would the mod team be OK with a chatroom stalking an unusually active mod and reversing their closures/reopenings (after giving them a case-by-case though)?

I assume moderators know what they're doing and are reasonable. This assumption has never let me down on SE before so I'll keep it

@Undo It's not unprecedented. I believe SF had a mod removed when they went and did stuff without talking to the community.
Also, now that I'm looking at the primary graph, I seem to have fallen to a nice solid 5th.

@Andy I'm last

Looks like you're still within spitting distance of 10th though.

2:24 PM
Indeed
The next wave of the India effect though will lock 10th down for Jigar, me thinks.

@Andy Not a bad place to be, although lower than I thought you'd be
@JanDvorak I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be allowed.

@Undo In my biased opinion...I agree.

If you were doing so to me, I might ask 'why' but I couldn't stop you.

Right now it looks like the competitive spots are 3/4 and 10/11/12

It's interested how folks are grouped into 3-4 clusters.
Where Aaron has his own :P

2:29 PM
Seems I underestimated the importance of rep a whole bunch

On SO rep is important. Especially since so many people can get a 40/40 candidate score.

The ideal demographic there would be a 40/40 CS Indian with great English.

@Undo So Bhargav

... yeah, I guess. Huh.

His english is fine, he's from India, and he's 40/40

2:31 PM
Isn't that an oxymoron?

Some Indians have good English. Nowhere near all, but some.
I find it amusing how you can often tell nationality by how people write.

But then again nowhere near all of any group has good English. And that includes US and UK.

Seriously though Bhargav would make a fine mod

You can often tell the Indians by the unnecessary code formatting. The Germans use too many capital letters in the middle of sentences.

@JanDvorak the Dutch are the best scoring foreigners, according to a study published today: nu.nl/lifestyle/4351010/…
@ArtOfCode yes, but it's even easier when you hear people talk.

2:33 PM
I did identify a characteristic for the French the other day, but I've forgotten it now
@Glorfindel Yeah, though that's rarer on the net :)

@ArtOfCode French punctuation is rather peculiar: spaces before almost everything, French quotation marks («»).

@Wrzlprmft Yeah, there's that. I'm pretty sure it was something about sentence construction around infinitive verbs

@ArtOfCode It's a habit
in german all the nouns are capitalized
It's hard to shake that

@Magisch aye, German has them. It's odd how often that transfers into Germans' English, though
I believe you're enrolled in an Apprenticeship, for example ;)

2:41 PM
@Magisch And adjectives derived from proper nouns aren’t (most of the time).

Gerglish: like English, except all Nouns are capitalized.

@ArtOfCode Thats a title though
Albeit its also a noun in english

not in English it ain't :)

German capitalization rules are extensive and hard to grasp for newcomers to german

2:44 PM
the English title is that you are an Apprentice - that's fine
the position is an apprenticeship

For germans, we internalize them completly.
You have no idea just how much capitalization I have to fix in everything I type day to day.

(TL;DR for that link: A study found that the German capitalisation paradigm applied to Dutch makes Dutch texts easier to read for Dutch native speakers.)

@undo over the period you have ran Smokey on your Pi, did you ever have to replace the sd card? Because on the 'Net it is written that the sd card on the pi gets worn out pretty easily

@Ash that might be what caused the filesystem errors we saw about a month ago, when I took over running it on EC2

hmm.. then maybe I'll use my Pi with a pen drive and redirect boot to the pen drive

2:47 PM
@Magisch Well, mostly it’s that you capitalise every noun and everything that behaves like one (except pronouns). I would guess that by sticking to that rule you would only make a mistake once every thousand words or so.

@Magisch completely*

@Wrzlprmft titles are also capitalised
And sometimes titles are words that also can be used as adjectives

@ArtOfCode Doubtful. More than likely Undo just pulled the plug accidentally or dropped it again...

Then again, you'd think its easy. Doesn't stop people in my class in vocational school from getting D's and worse on grammar/writing

@Wrzlprmft It's nowhere near as hard as learning English pronuncation.

2:50 PM
@Glorfindel pronounciation?

Thanks for the link BTW.

is pronouncation a word?

@Magisch No, it was reject on accounts of making too much sense.

Dearest creature in creation,
Study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse
Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy,
Make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear.
So shall I! Oh hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard,
Dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain.
(Mind the latter, how it’s written.)
Now I surely will not plague you
With such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak:

Candidates #1 or #2 in Primary have always won (7/7)
#3 won 6/7 times (the only exception is OMGPonies in election 2)
##4-6 won 3/7 times
#7 won 2/7 times
#9 won 1/7 times, that was Jeremy Banks
