@hichris123 And in this room, the stat is simply "1K"... no further information on hover. :(

@Minestrone Have you been measuring how successful your auto-comments are?

3:59 AM
@hichris123 Not in a formal way. I log them in Normal chatroom and review a sample of posts afterwards. I also log the tags that the bot commented about to make sure that they are indeed worth complaining about. (I.e., tags that are too obscure to be the primary tag on a question, like [square-numbers]).
I wouldn't define success as % of posts edited after auto-comment. Sometimes, when the bot points out that "Question about an integral" is not a good title, the OP just edits to "Problem about an integral". :/

----------
Post - Contains 4 unique characters
Title - Repeated character: uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Post - Repeated character: uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

The overall body of the question was really weird, it had random keywords and snippets of code in it.
Might have been crafted to try to get around whatever SE's spam filter is
@Minestrone Ah yes I've seen that before

@quartata Actually it never really was a thing: it went to beta, and then it was shut down.

6:24 PM
@ProgramFOX All I remember was PPCG got excluded from it because of GolfScript :P
Anyways, why isn't link at end active on CR?

lol, but after a while we un-excluded all sites again and stripped everything we didn't need (code, MathJax, etc.) but we still got lots of FPs
@quartata Should it be?

Well it seems like it wouldn't hurt. I can't think of any legitimate reason for having a link at the end of a CR post unless it was a github link maybe

There are always strange posts with strange links: people linking to an image, to some file they have stored, to the website that they have broken CSS on, etc.
Not to say that they should, or it's on-topic on CR. But those are non-spammy reasons for such links.

But why would it be at the bottom of the post?
At any rate, if it isn't on-topic on CR it is something Smokey should note.
Smokey catches a lot of unclear or weird questions on SO, not just spam

By an accident. We don't want posts from around the network that are merely off-topic. Most of us have 101 rep on a given site, so can't close anyway. If it's not spam/abusive flaggable, it's noise.

6:36 PM
There are "should be closed" flags.

Yeah, but "should be closed" != "spam/abusive", and that's the flag type we aim for.

OK, but my point is that the amount of false positives (not spam but should be closed primarily) that would be caught with this would not only be minimal but also not necessarily a bad thing to catch.

@Minestrone What do the check marks (ticks) and exes (crosses) mean there, please?

@msh210 spam or ham
Check marks mean yes it was spam crosses mean no it was a false positive

@quartata Thanks. And that's as decided by humans (e.g. in this chat room), right?

@msh210 Check: someone replied with "true/tp/tpu" to confirm as spam/abuse. Cross: someone replied with false.

@msh210 Yes.

Yeah, two people responded.

Okay. Thanks for the info.

So maybe someone here said sd k and someone in Meta Tavern said sd k too.

mhm. So what happens if someone here says yes, it's spam?
What happens to the post, I mean?

7:00 PM
Smokey doesn't do anything.
But usually the humans flag it into oblivion.
We're working on an auto flagger though I believe

@quartata Meaning, people in Tavern or this room (for example)? But most of them don't have the rep on the smaller sites, right?

@msh210 The association bonus is enough for flags.

@quartata Oh. Oops. :-)

@msh210 Why data is only kept for the last 50 posts

[ SmokeDetector ] Email in answer: Cheese from UHT Milk by user42837 on cooking.stackexchange.com

@quartata It's stored in metasmoke now, though

@Undo Right

@quartata No, left.

I'm also kinda surprised Cooking SE doesn't get more spam
Does metasmoke have stats on average number of reports per week or whatever for each site

8:32 PM
@quartata No idea, but Undo can probably pull that kind of stuff from the database.

Would be interesting if we could compare that to the number of spam posts deleted on sites. (would need 10k rep though)
That would show us if we're missing a lot of posts on certain sites

@quartata You might look at the second graph on metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/graphs

Ooh.
This is all reports I take it?

Since roughly August of last year

Did we really get no reports on 22 Jan?

8:39 PM
Metasmoke was down.

^ rails amirite

That makes sense

Interesting. Code Review has the lowest amount of reports.

@hichris123 No, it's an attempt to comment on the answer claiming that Apple App Store is incompatible with GPL, by giving a counterexample.

@Minestrone Ohhh. I was looking at the question, not the remaining answer. :/

Deciphering author's intent from their jumbled writing is what I do for a living. :/

No problem! Thanks for the ping.
...I don't actually know what the license changes affect, but considering that my contributions to Smokey are few and far between, I suppose I'll trust we're not doing anything evil and give my consent. :P

:P
What we're doing is adding a license... technically, since we didn't have one, Smokey was full copyright.

Ah

So we're making it MIT/Apache.

Ok.
Ooh! I wanted to do this but with automated closevotes on Math.SE: docs.google.com/document/d/…
(The automated flagging thing)

I've wanted to do that too, but closevoting is quite a bit harder. It's easy to identify blatant spam, but it's hard for a regex to identify an unclear/broad/whatever question with few false positives.

I'd suggest going for automated downvotes instead.
Generally, I've grown to prefer downvote and delete votes to closevotes.
Trivial questions are practically immune to closevoting: an answer arriving in seconds will beat 5 closevotes by a large margin. So an attempt to stomp out lazy problem dumps unintentionally creates a bias toward much-duplicated trivialities. Which by now get on my nerves more than lazy but non-duplicated questions.
