@Daniil pssst: lack of response may also be a friendly hint
pestering is counter-productive more often than not

user435118
@ArtOfCode What? I don’t care if it’s impolite or whatever, I just want a response.

> I don't care if it's impolite
think I've found the problem there

user435118
?

user435118
I don’t want someone to not respond for a ‘friendly hint’, just say no then

friendly advice time: you are not entitled to a response; you are not entitled to anyone's time; if you don't get one, perhaps one gentle nudge to check whether they've seen it is cool; more than that and you're pestering and that gets annoying fast
especially when it's every hour

12:05 AM
Well this sound a bit ... harsh

aye, possibly
but it's also true

user435118
I don’t want to be rude to Makyen but a “no” or “I’ll think about it” is much better than replying to someone else and ignoring your message

It is understandable for a developer to be very excited at one's project, and that is fine.

@user12986714 not overly harsh IMO. It may be a little on the blunt side but it's both accurate and helpful

my point is that sometimes, folks find it easier to stay quiet and not respond, because having to phrase a "no" that doesn't come across badly and then get into the argument of "why not" is... effort

user435118
12:08 AM
> having to phrase a "no" that doesn't come across badly and then get into the argument of "why not" is... effort

user435118
I don’t mind if it comes across badly

But others might

user435118
As long as it’s to the point

it's much better to take that as a friendly hint and assume it's a no than it is to ping incessantly and annoy them, because that achieves anything but your aim

user435118
I don’t view it as that, I view it as disrespectful

12:10 AM
It is common to become impatient if one have a bunch of time to spend

and to that I must refer you to my earlier comment

(Like me now)

> you are not entitled to a response

Maybe find another project to kill time

here's the thing - confrontation with trolls is one thing. What I find really hard is confrontation with folks who I know have good intentions, but whose input I don't particularly want on $Thing, for whatever reason. Saying "no" to a well-intentioned offer of help is hard.
I find it much easier to accidentally not respond to those messages instead; the same holds true for a lot of folks
It's a different style of communication, but it's not wrong - it's just something you learn about and deal with, as you would deal with... say someone whose first language isn't English and communicates differently because of that

user435118
12:14 AM
For what reason? That I ‘know nothing’ and will have to ask for help?

user435118
I’ve had 2 people on SE really upset me today (1 in particular) - not a good day

@Daniil For whatever reason. If I'm working on a thing, I might not want someone's help for any number of reasons. Maybe I want it to be my own project. Maybe I have a plan for it that it would be hard to communicate and distribute. Maybe I have domain expertise. Maybe I'm nearly done. Maybe I have other contributors and I don't need more.

I would suggest everyone backoff for the next 10 minutes
At least maybe on this topic

Point is, it's not a slight against you, it could be for any number of reasons, but your offer of help is well-intentioned and declining it without slighting you or discouraging you is hard.
@Daniil y'wanna know why I point this stuff out to you?

@Daniil We're all on the same team here, we're all trying to help one another

user435118
12:18 AM
What happened now would have only upset me a bit, but I guess I was upset even more because of what happened earlier, so it kind of layered on top

@Daniil I guess I missed that. Bad timing - sorry.

user435118
@ArtOfCode Can we talk about what happened earlier off SE in private? It’s really bothered me now

@Daniil I would consider this requiring mediation (please ignore this if I am one of the two bothering you)

Sure. Throw up a private chat if you want, or twitter DMs or keybase if that's easier

@Dharman I suppose we could watch that individual YouTube video ID, other than that I don't think there's a lot we could do

@Daniil I appreciate the offer. I will try to keep it in mind and find some things which are reasonable for me to delegate.
While not applicable in this instance, @ArtOfCode does have a point. The way of communicating, or not really communicating, which was described isn't all that uncommon. I suggest that you try to recognize when it happens, and determine a strategy which will effectively accomplish what you desire, and which doesn't annoy the person you're trying to communicate with. That type of situation is tough and often fraught with landmines.

@Daniil If it was something I did which upset you, I'm sorry for whatever it was. If you could be explicit about what it was, that would help me not to repeat it.

12:27 AM
@Dharman I agree that it's probably just a case of the post author not knowing the rules, and that's why I didn't red-flag it on the site. But there's no harm, and some benefit, of such posts being reported to (and caught by) Smoke Detector.

@Daniil I was not insulted. I was, and still am a bit, concerned my actions, or lack of response, has made you feel insulted. I intended no insult. It does end up, at times, that I see a question and either need to be doing other things, or realize that a decent answer to the question requires considerable prep work/investigation. At those times, a response may be delayed. It's also possible I miss something, or get distracted by everything else going on and don't get back to responding.

@user12986714 Yeah, this is a known issue. I have JavaScript that properly converts (at least as best as I believe possible), the body "HTML" which SD provides to MS, but the code would need to be translated into Ruby. Note that the transformation which SD performs on the body HTML code prior to forwarding it to MS is not 100% reversible. There is HTML which can not be accurately recovered back to the original.
BTW: which post were you looking at? (just so I can verify the above code is working as expected)

@user12986714 It would be possible for SD to pass either the unprocessed HTML, as received from SE, and/or the Markdown to MS. However, what's currently in the MS database, and what is expected by everything, is the processed HTML. It's not unreasonable to switch, or add the Markdown. There are definitely things we could, and should, do in SD to also test the Markdown.

@user12986714 You don't have blacklist manager privileges, but I've created PR#4014 for you.
PR#4014 ("user12986714: Watch oppojobs\.com") opened by SmokeDetector

@Makyen I did not reading SE API doc, is the post fetched in markdown format? If so, are there some reasons that we would prefer SD to convert posts into html?

@user12986714 The post body, and a few other things (e.g. comments), can be fetched as either, or both, HTML and/or Markdown. SD doesn't convert posts into HTML. SD converts the HTML it receives from SE into different HTML by converting all HTML entities to characters.
This is done because the people writing the detections find it easier to think in terms of the characters, rather than the fact that some things are always HTML entities in some places within the HTML and other things may be HTML entities or characters.

"If you want to use a code example that includes HTML, you must use HTML entities for your < and >. If you don't do this, it will be interpreted as actual HTML." .......... Bad news
A quick workaround would be to have SD send both versions of html, and when displaying, if the original version doesn't exist, fall back to the processed version
A much more permanent change would be to potentially switch to markdown completely, with added benefit that it is easier to process by machines.

4:45 AM
@user12986714 It's not a quick workaround. That requires database changes, nearly doubles the amount of data stored per post, etc.

@Makyen alter table posts add body_orig text;

@user12986714 That's unlikely to happen, nor should it. We'd have to do the conversion from Markdown to HTML, the sanitizing, re-write a large number of regexes and code, etc. And even after we were done, we wouldn't be certain we were displaying exactly what SE would be displaying. It would be reasonable for us to also process the Markdown.
@user12986714 Yes, but then there's everything that would need to do something with the data.

@Makyen That, I suppose, is the exact reason why this is permanent and we should do it as soon as possible if we want to. The added features of html over markdown are generally not used in posts, and the complex html syntax would be little more than noise for our purpose. There will be migration issues, which will only become more severe the longer we wait. (The migration would be a one time awk/sed/perl work, but using a suboptimal solution can cause more work over a long time.)

@user12986714 If you feel something like that should be done, then create an Issue on GitHub. Describe what you think should happen and the reasons it would be a good idea. Try to include what the impact will be and how to mitigate it.
Keep in mind that if we're dealing with the Markdown, that we must actually deal with both Markdown and HTML, because it's perfectly valid to have the actual source for the post be completely HTML and use no Markdown at all.

@user12986714 Yeah, that's very rare. Spammers do use obfuscation, but there are limitations to what they can do and still get people to respond. In general, we've handled it by detecting bfuscation, mostly, only when the spammer gives us evidence that they are willing to use obfuscation.
