Q: Do we still need the lower threshold for spam/rude deletions?

Monica CellioOn most sites on the network, it takes six red flags (spam or rude) to delete a question or answer. In December 2016, two sites that were getting a lot of spam had the threshold lowered from six to three. Ours is one of them. A few things have changed since then: Our spam levels are no longe...

Thanks

@Makyen Thanks :D

@thesecretmaster Change a site from a maximum of 1 autoflag to normal. I believe it's a database change.

Ah yeah, I think there's a column for it in the sites table, which would need Undo (or Art/I could migrate it in a pinch). Although it doesn't seem urgent, because there's no danger from not flagging enough.
Yep, seems like it's here: github.com/Charcoal-SE/metasmoke/blob/…

By the way, why's SFF set to only get 3 flags max?

4:18 PM
If you can go ahead and make that change to four flags, that'd be great, @thesecretmaster :D
@thesecretmaster Because that's what they chose when the decision was made to switch from 3-4 network-wide... they wanted to stay with 3.

@thesecretmaster There was a meta on SFF about SmokeDetector. IIRC, it was when the proposed change from 3 to 4 was being made and they declined. Actually, it caused a bit of a furor.

@Catija I technically can update it, but it'd be best to wait for Undo to do it, especially since there's not much harm done by flagging a couple posts too few times.

@thesecretmaster OK! No worries. :D

Charcoal noob here... I have a question if someone is willing to humor me :)
Typically, if we have an "alert" (not sure this is the right term) on a URL. Is it only triggered when a specific user puts it in a post or does it apply to any user?

tpu- feedback received

@Emilie By "alert" you mean each report message from SmokeDetector, of which you see quite a few of in this chat room?

@Makyen yes :)
Basically, a spammy link initially posted by a user was posted by another non-malicious user and I'm wondering if it got flagged/how come it didn't
eeeeh I'm not sure I'm being clear :)

@Emilie OK. Those are generated by SmokeDetector when it detects a post which it thinks might be spam or rude/abusive. SmokeDetector scans every post on SE which is newly posted or edited (and the question along with all of the answers on that question). The detections are primarily content, but a few are based on usernames (some which are consistently used by spammers or trolls), and there is also a dynamic user-blacklist, which is for specific users when they get tpu feedback.
tpu feedback is specifically "that post is a True Positive and add the User to the user blacklist".
If a post by that user subsequently gets fp (False Positive) feedback, then the user is removed from the user-blacklist.

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in body (1): HttpClient não está baixando todo o body da pagina html by Philipi Altoe on pt.stackoverflow.com

@Emilie What happened is going to depend on the actual detections. Most posts are reviewed by humans in order to flag posts. For some posts, metasmoke is sure enough (about 99.75%) that the post is spam or R/A such that it gets some number of autoflags, but it's then also reviewed by humans.
@Emilie Possibly. When a new spam domain/URL is detected as spam, a human reviewing the post will usually add the domain to our watchlist. The watchlist is considered an "experimental" reason. Posts which are only detected for experimental reasons are only reported here in Charcoal HQ. Once we get several detections of that domain, al of which are True Positive, a human will move it to the blacklisted websites. Once it's there, then it is reported into all rooms which get reports for the site.

8:04 PM
@Makyen I think the URL was added to the watchlist...so it would only show in this room and not Spam blot, looks like I've got some scrolling to do :)

@Emilie If you have the URL for the post in which it was, you can use this page to find any metasmoke reports for that post. Unless metasmoke was down when the report came in (hasn't been down recently), then metasmoke will have a record of the report.
@Emilie Given that you know the spam domain, you could use metasmoke's search to find all reports which contain the domain.

@Makyen Weird, I'm not getting anything but maybe I'm trying to do too much at once

If you want to see if there is an actual SmokeDetector chat message with a particular post, I usually find it easiest to use the SE site's post ID in the chat search feature (top right of the chat page). This will normally bring up any messages which contain a URL to that post. There may be other posts on other sites, but that's fairly rare.
@Emilie What is the spam domain? And/or the post you are interested in?

@Makyen chat search even if it was in Q&A?
clippingpathassociate.com

@Emilie If you are specifically wanting to find a SmokeDetector chat message about a SE post, then it works to search on just the numeric post ID, because that is part of the URL that is used in the chat message.
@Emilie Searching for clippingpathassociate.com only shows 2 posts detected with that URL. A brief search through the watchlist didn't find it on the watchlist. I'll add it now.

@Makyen Thank you! I have another to add, can anyone input the command?

@Emilie Anyone with SmokeDetector privileges. All moderators automatically have SmokeDetector privileges. There's another level of privilege, which is called "code admin". If a user does not have that then a PR is created, rather than immediately adding it. But such PRs are usually approved reasonably quickly. You can go ahead and add one now. Any such entries are regular expressions, which mostly means that you need to use \. for any . in the domain, like I did above.

8:21 PM
@Emilie That response indicates that there is already a detection which catches that text. Specifically, "Potentially bad keyword" means that it is caught by the watchlist. Don't worry about having got such a responses, I get them all the time. However, you shouldn't use the -force version it's talking about unless you fully understand what's being caught and still believe a new entry really should be added. Knowing that can often take a few minutes of research.

@Emilie no problem. I'm happy to help.

Indeed, I had; do notifications get reset?

@JeffSchaller You probably did. Unfortunately, notifications are stored separately on each SmokeDetector instance. Thus, when the SmokeDetector instance switches to one on which you have not yet asked for notifications, you need to do so again. We've had a few of our SmokeDetector instances be unstable over the last couple days, so it's changed a few times.

@Makyen ahhh, perfect; thanks for the explanation. Are there many instances?

8:30 PM
@JeffSchaller There are a variable number, depending on who has stepped up to run one. Over the last couple months we've generally had 4 running. At the moment, we have 3 running. All three of those have been the active instance over the last day, due to various problems. You can get the current status of SmokeDetector instances on this metasmoke page.
