It should be edited, but IMO it's not spam (@Makyen)
Am I missing something?

1:48 AM
@thesecretmaster through metasmoke

@thesecretmaster Rude/abusive. User is aggressively resisting editing. Perhaps You're probably right that fp is appropriate feedback for SD, but it should be flagged, either as R/A or a custom flag. Note that the user deleted their identical answer, which was accumulating downvotes and flags.

Hrm. OK
@Makyen I agree that it's r/a, but I wouldn't blacklist them -- they have other positive contributions on SO.

@thesecretmaster I'm the paperclip a-hole he's talking about lol. He's attempted to edit my posts, he's commented on my old questions
Because I edited out his profanity

@thesecretmaster I agree that post can be edited, Rob has done edited that. If that user rolled back again and starting edit war, just use custom mod flag as last measure.

I don't disagree that it's a terrible answer -- just saying they shouldn't go on a blacklist.

1:50 AM
And he had a rude comment to another member which was already deleted

@thesecretmaster It depends on where you want to draw the line. If it was just this answer, I would wholeheartedly agree that they shouldn't be blacklisted. I'm kind-of on the other side due to the other actions of the user.

I'd flag for mod atten -- this seems like it might be suspension worthy.
I agree that the behavior is bad and the answer is bad, but it's not spam, and Smokey is supposed to catch spam.

@ArtOfCode are you familiar with jbuilder?

[ SmokeDetector ] SmokeDetector started at rev 96bed23 (quartata: left in a print statement) (running on teward/Lunar Eclipse)
Restart: API quota is 16278.

@quartata define familiar... have used before and can Google documentation, yes
metasmoke uses it for a bunch of stuff
APIv1 used it here and there

do you know if it has stuff for parsing nested JSON structures
as opposed to like building them
hmm just realized a problem with using EventMachine here
firing off a request that will eventually return with a backoff, then doing another one while waiting for that one will lead to a violation without us knowing that we got the backoff
I guess that's why we can only do one at a time
but we can still listen to the socket

@quartata uh
sounds like you're doing things in the wrong place, to be honest :P
jbuilder is native to HTTP; parsing JSON is HTTP to native
what are you trying to do?

well it's just that have about 200 lines of hell spawn ruby that has a lot of this:
      types = config['types']

      if !types
        raise 'No post types specified'
      end

      Subscription.delete_all(:bot => bot)

      types.each do |type, params|
          type_sym = PostType.post_types[type]

          if !type_sym
              raise "Unknown post type #{type}"
          end
          ...
      end
woops indentation came out wrong
substitute types and type_sym for basically any field
lots of validation and looping over things
now I could make my own thing that creates a schema for the JSON
but I was wondering if something else had and jbuilder sounded like the same thing but in reverse

3:29 AM
I... don't see any JSON parsing there
If you have data from AR (or elsewhere, I guess) that you want to turn into JSON in a well-defined schema, then yes jbuilder is what you're looking for

I mean the hash specifically

Throw it on GH and chuck me a link to the relevant bits and I'll take a look in the morning, if you like

is from a big blob of JSON
@ArtOfCode I have a bunch of other stuff to clean up first so I'll wait

@quartata oh, so config is JSON.parsed from a file?
or from the DB, or wherever

from a POST

3:31 AM
okay, makes sense

that's why I have to validate it pretty throughly and return a human readable error
if you want to see the full thing...

well you can either JSON.parse it in the controller and pass that to jbuilder
Or - jbuilder files are still Ruby files, just with jbuilder injected into them, so you can actually just do standard Ruby JSON parsing in a jbuilder view file
I think

technically you should do the former, in keeping with MVC, but... eh

but I thought jbuilder was just about building a JSON thing
like how would I use it for this
what I'd love is something where I can just put in the example JSON I have on the README annotated with various callbacks for given fields
(and error handlers)

3:34 AM
jbuilder could do it

@quartata If you're talking about the SE API, then other requests which were fired prior to receiving backoff may: A) also get a backoff; or B) be rejected with an error. You either need to handle both the cases, or fire off requests sequentially, which will result in significantly lower performance. Note that the hard restriction is 30 requests/s. If you do more than that, then you will be blocked. Also note that backoff is per method (endpoint). ref

@Makyen I know I need to handle both
I can't handle both async

I can't look in detail now, but I'll have a look in the morning. I suspect you want a jbuilder file, if/else the error handling, and json.propertyname the fields you want or nulls

EM doesn't have locks which is dumb. I still want other tasks to fire in the background, just not this one critical region
found another gem tho

If I manually report spam, does it also register my feedback?

@ArtOfCode ok

@quartata It's more complex, but it should be doable, if the complexity is worth it.

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs no

@K.Dᴀᴠɪs nope, it's just a report. The idea is that you manually report it, then let others check it and make sure it's spam, and they feed back on it.

3:37 AM
I can see why that's necessary
So the consensus is to not provide feedback on manual reports

not entirely sure what it's doing with fibers
yeah ok i don't want that
I don't understand why EM doesn't offer this. asyncio does.
It's not unreasonable

@thesecretmaster the one I linked, it's too invasive though
basically replaces all of EM with this fiber based thing

Fibers are cool
Actually... could you just use fibers?

also hooks into activerecord and a bunch of other gems and changes behavior
I like my regular EM, just need a mutex
don't wanna use Redis
actually Redis wouldn't help me here since that's still sync

Isn't there a big "PAUSE" button that you can put on the main event loop?

4:10 AM
That's the point, I want other tasks to keep going. I just don't want it to make another SE API request
While it's waiting for it there's plenty of other stuff to do

Just don't re-enter in case we get a backoff

Hrm...

This bit I haven't committed yet though

So, is it possible to abstract some stuff out of the EM loop?

Not sure what you mean?

Could you have some logic outside of the EM loop to negotiate backoffs and such?

4:20 AM
I could do this from an EM.defer
Then use a normal mutex

That sounds right to me

That's kinda overkill though: only need one thread, not the 20 or so EM spawns when you use a defer
could skip the mutex if there was only one worker
Then it just gets queued behind

Remind me again why you're using EM?

EM.threadpool_size, score
@thesecretmaster easy CMT style async
Slow bots will block everything else
So far everything's been dandy except for this one little thing

Y'know, I probably only dislike it because I was trying to use it in a project that didn't need it.

4:23 AM
I think setting the threadpool size to 1 and using defer will work

Setting the threadpool size could come back to bite you later though.

I don't think I'll use defer for anything else. if I do then I'll use a mutex
Although probably using my own worker might be better

I agree
And it wouldn't be very expensive.
