Q: Computer Science Career Questions

user382837I have to interview someone who has a career in the computer science field for school and was hoping someone on this website would help me. If some questions seem uncomfortable then you do not have to answer them What do you do on a daily basis (5 work tasks commonly performed)? What is the min...

Saw that

Didn't we have a policy that survey requests count as spam too?

We should have a smokey report for questions vlq (naa equivalent in answers)

Let's ask what the tavern folks think

8
Q: Are research survey questions expected to be handled with close votes?

gnatThis question (probably soon to be deleted) made me wonder what would be the right way to handle surveys like that: I'm doing a worker interview for High School and I want to be a computer programmer. What is your job title? What is your work history? ... What are the duties of a b...

Q: Are research survey questionnaires spam on Stack Exchange sites?

martin claytonIn Apache Ant or GNU Make survey the asker is apparently carrying out an Ant v. Make research smackdown. To me this looks like spam, but seems harmless. Should anything be done? Is there a policy on canvassing the community in this way? Is it allowed? As an aside, it seems like the OP would ...

Looks to me like spam flags should be acceptable, but not really mandatory...

It was a bad edit but not spam.
Somebody had his question closed as a dupe and edited it to add a bunch of "^^^^^" plus "see that" or something. New user.

Thanks. We tend to accept vandalism hits, which I'm tempted to classify that as

I don't know what feedback Smokey should get -- I'm glad we were alerted to the edit but red-flagging it would have been wrong.
I'd call that vandalism, yes.
As I said, glad to get the report -- I just wouldn't have wanted it to result in valid red flags. I don't know if it would have.

@MonicaCellio Autoflags, no. We check revision count and require it to equal 1 before sending any flags.

@Undo oh good. Thanks for explaining.

@Undo Check revision?

2:32 AM
@MonicaCellio We do mark them tp. A pretty effective litmus test we've settled on for that is "Would we be happy if the system itself had blocked this outright?" - for vandalism, that's pretty easy.

It must be the first catch for the same post before MS sends AFs?

@iBug that's another check - has the be the first hit on metasmoke so we don't double-flag, and has to be the first revision (no edits) to the post on the site.

@Undo sounds good.
(Yes that's something I'd've been happy to have the system catch automatically.)

@Undo BTW, I have an idea about Community bumping. We can check if a post is identical to the revision when it's last caught and test if they're identical. If yes then we know we have duplicates (so MS can discard the new catch).
^ Already posted on GH issue thread.

Awesome, thanks for dropping in :)

2:36 AM
You should be easily able to find some posts that are caught 5+ times, with all revisions identical, verbatim.
Either the post is bumped by Community, or another post on the same question is edited.

@iBug Don't even have to check if they're identical in text - just check last rev date, compare to MS report date.

@Undo Ah, looks good.
Does that sound like a good idea?

Not clear on the problem statement, but it's a fairly elegant solution if there's a problem to solve.

Problem statement?
@Undo Is this a valid problem? Issue #1552

"What problem does it solve?"
... yep, that would be

2:42 AM
That generates duplicated FPs.

Store the revision count

@quartata Shouldn't even need to do that if we have the MS report date. Should be able to compare last_activity_date with that

@Undo right but we already fetch revisions, just have to move it

Wouldn't this need to be a post-test, pre-report check in SmokeDetector?

If we are error-prone...
We can directly discard the new report on MS side, and merge feedbacks into the old one (since they're identical verbatim).

3:04 AM
@Undo I was thinking have MS redirect to the previous report
Actually
We wouldn't have to do anything
If MS drops the report, it'll get the last one since it looks up by post URL

@quartata ... sure?
Say a post have rev A B and C. Smokey just reported C and MS dropped it. People send feedback to Smokey's message C, and MS will record them as feedbacks to B?

Correct. B and C would be the same revision though
I could implement that in like ten seconds

There should be an Olympic speed programming event.

Then go for it.

Only trouble is the grace period

3:14 AM
@quartata We can probably ignore it?

Could update the post body

@quartata Don't do that.
I recommend ignoring the grace period and treat as if the post is not modified.
I once mod-flagged a rude post that's edited into NAA in the grace period on SU.

I think updating post body + title is a good solution

Identify the report interval, and if <=5min then compare revisions?
No no no. That'd break my mod flags.

3:21 AM
???
Mods can't see grace period edits

> This was spam and the bad part was edited out during the 5min grace period. The original answer can be found in the Metasmoke record. Looking for spam-delete.

@iBug those are likely to be declined, fwiw

The result was the post hard-flagged by a mod and user destroyed.

The updated record would only be if the edited version tripped something

The original answer was "GS Richcopy 360".
After the edit during GP, the result looked like
> use robocopy. very good software .total use freind

3:23 AM
That would be deleted either way

Note the "robocopy".

Still spam

Yeah, I could see getting a preemptive delete there. Just know that you'll have inconsistent results there.

robocopy is not spam.

Also the behavior I'm describing wouldn't occur anyways

@Mithrandir I get a load of my edits rejected for the same reason when I try and fix spelling and grammar. After its rejected the reviewer then goes and edits it anyway
And rep doesn't count on meta so let the down votes rear their ugly head

@Mithrandir The OP will get a notification of the suggested edit in their inbox. They will have the option to approve it.
@Mithrandir If you're really wondering why it was rejected, the only people that can actually tell you why are the two users who rejected the edit. Anyone else on Meta would just be guessing. To find out, you'd need to contact those users (which you could do, if you wanted to).

People can make educated guesses. And yes, I could contact those users, but... I don't really think it's worth it. I could just ping Bhargav and ask him to override ;)

@Makyen a lot of my edits get rejected for that same reason by lots of users. Is there any general reason, does spelling and grammar come under superfluous edits?

8:07 AM
(it's been overriden @ibug)

@Mithrandir Good

@JakeSymons No, the general direction is that if it improves the post, then it should be approved, unless there are other reasons to not do so (e.g. corrects one small thing and leaves other obvious issues uncorrected; would be the first edit after the question is closed, thus depriving the OP of the one free-by-edit entry into the reopen queue; etc.)

@NisseEngström However, I should note that notifications are not made to the post's user for all edits. The edit has to be "non-trivial". "Non-trivial" is defined, based on a diff, as a change to > 10 characters, or > 2 characters of code. However, it doesn't count Markdown, which can result in no notification for much larger edits (e.g. I was not notified of revision 3 here, which removed 191 characters).
