@ArtOfCode Rude/A, VLQ, NAA. Potentially the simple Q closure reasons. R/A can be flagged as spam, but people tend to be reluctant to do so.

@Undo FIRE uses the MS API for spam flags; that's where all our manual flag data comes from
but not for R/A flags, because MS doesn't cast R/A flags
@Makyen Cool. In that case, I'll throw up an endpoint when I can for reporting R/A flags to metasmoke - we won't record the other types, they can just get cast normally

@Undo It doesn't currently flag through the SE API at all, but doing so is relatively easy.
@Undo To test things, I turn off all my userscripts at least a few times a week to load a page or two. Every time, I'm reminded of how much more I like working with the pages with the userscripts functional. If I lost all of them, I'm sure I'd be quite urgently be working on restoring them from backups/bookmarks of the script pages. :-)

@ArtOfCode What would it take to do R/A? We've always hard-lined it before, but would it be easiest overall to allow flagging R/A? Maybe we don't even track the difference in FlagLogs, because we really don't care

@Undo add a parameter to User#spam_flag, pick the right flag type. Probably not difficult.

@ArtOfCode Impossible on foreign sites, but I don't think we even know how to spam flag on foreign sites.

12:09 AM
nope, we don't
we could easily enough

s/impossible/I don't speak Portuguese/g
@Makyen Yep, there are a few mod scripts that I go nuts without, so those are back... and then there are the ones that do some weird niche thing that make me go "ugh, need that script back... but I can do it manually this once" over and over.
My spam flagging activity here has mostly been clicking the MS link and flagging directly there. Works pretty well, actually.
Slightly slower, which might be correlated with that server bump

@Undo mine too

@Undo Pick out the flag option names from localized sites, throw 'em in an array, search for any flag option with a title in the array

aye

neither that nor R/A is difficult... as usual, just needs someone to find time, which is short right now

12:14 AM
yeah, we need to stay focused
although... letting things cool down a little might be prudent

worth mentioning I have like 4 separate Charcoal things I'm working on
with mixed results in each
maybe we should hold off on any auto flagging changes
since it seems to be having some trouble
Speaking of which @Undo PR inbound

Definitely holding off on autoflagging until deletion logs work. No point in running experiment without metrics

\o/ stickers arrived yesterday
Earlier than I thought
Strange, the big SO sticker has the old logo on it
Still, pretty awesome
Thanks SE!

@ArtOfCode what am I supposed to do about this
I think it's saying it triggers only if you update the record inside the hook
Which is easy enough, just use update_columns
But I'm kinda nervous about it

that'd be fine

@ArtOfCode @Undo please check this very carefully for any other updates I missed: github.com/Charcoal-SE/metasmoke/pull/317
my current working theory is that after_create is getting called before the post is fully committed and so the dupe checker fails because the count is 0, and we haven't noticed because the thread wasnt getting scheduled right away but now that redunda and sentinel have been moved there's less competition
And yes CI will fail because I used self in the debug statements

at any rate that was from a separate PR

@quartata think so

@quartata correction - they haven't been moved, there's just more space. Same effect. And that sounds like a plausible theory

If this works I still want to change that if from unless count == 1 to if count > 1 for sure
Just trying to get at the underlying issue

Here's the rare TL thing for ya'll to see:
> @Undo Ok. Write post like this:

> Summary: "We, the Smoke Detector Global Cabal, want to automatically flag posts with a high probability of being spam more than we're already flagging them"
> Introduction "what is Smoke Detector"
> The story so far "what Smoke Detector is currently doing"
> The reason for changing "what awesome thing Smoke Detector could do if we allowed it to flag more"
> The reasons for not changing "potential problems with this strategy and how we might mitigate them"
> The call to action "what potential problems or concerns are we overlooking here?"

> write post like this
Shog wrote that?
I don't believe it
Shog doesn't make mistakes

2:55 AM
And post that on mSE, then we should be able to get a [featured] and be in the sidebar everywhere

Why were people wanting us to do per-site meta posts in the first place?

so that all sites could see it
but if we get a [featured] then it's ok

@angussidney I also have permission to export the general concerns for ya'll to see
now, don't react to this too heavily. Remember I'm paraphrasing too.
Primarily, there are concerns about whether we're overriding local sites' agency, whether it's important for communities to flag their own spam.

easy solution for that
have a representative for that site here
I mean that's why we make diamonds

Not sure why that's a solution.... but also I don't see why the problem is a problem

3:00 AM
Those questions are completely out of sync with our philosophy, so someone (maybe me?) floated the idea of going directly to communities.
@angussidney It's a problem because people think it's a problem. Drawing the ire of network moderators isn't a generally good idea, even if you're right.
But the per-site meta thing is dead now, IMO. Featured on MSE would be perfect.

@Undo yeah, I understand we need to adress the issue, but I don't understand why people want to deal with the spam themselves (especially since we're not 6-flag nuking it with autoflags)
What were the other issues that came up?

At some level, it's a question of whether manual flagging from within the community is inherently better in a couple of ways. Completely foreign reasoning to me, as it probably is to you - which raises the point of just how out of sync we are with at least some fraction of network moderators.

@angussidney humans generally distrust machines to be better than them, even when evidence shows otherwise. That's a lot of the push back we are running into and why I said we need to focus on the people aspect of this, not just a bunch of stats saying we're good at this

@Andy I agree, you had some really good ideas which I saw in the transcript

@angussidney There are also secondary concerns about whether the 3 to 5 move, and any resultant decreases in spam lifetime, is even worth resultant risk - even if the risk is minimal.

3:08 AM
Btw: I think we need to make it more clear that we're not going to be casting 5 flags on every single post that we autoflag. We understand that 5 flags are only going to be cast on the clear-cut pharma stuff, but others may think that it'll be done on some posts which can be questionable depending on site policies

Compounding that: deletion logs don't work, so we can't show data we trust about TTD. That's part of the 'fix that' drive.
@angussidney Agree. That's probably where the technical part of the post should focus, with a link to the original for base details. Like Andy says, though, most of this needs to be social.

I opened that PR already

k, need to look at it. Thanks.

I don't know if it entirely works though, could use @angussidney
Just to make sure the deletion stats go through

@quartata whadya want me to take a look at?

3:10 AM
For the technical part, some variation of the graph on metasmoke.erwaysoftware.com/flagging/conditions/sandbox with annotations and appropriate scaling could show just how accurate this is

@Undo +1
@Undo another issue with our data is that it's very varied. Off peak, it can take hours to delete some spam, whereas on-peak our TTD is measured in seconds.

That and the TTD graph with annotations of before autoflags, 3 flags, etc to show how it effects TTD.

@Andy Yep. That's a powerful, easy-to-understand graph. And it doesn't take up much vertical space

I wonder what an average TTD/autoflag weight graph would look like

3:12 AM
We'll have to put that together once I get good TTD data

@Undo has SE agreed to give us access to the shog9 endpoint?

I sent him an email

No response yet I'm guessing

I'm pretty confident it'll work. That's all I can say on that one ;)

What data would they need? Just post IDs/sitename?

3:14 AM
@angussidney sent a CSV with post link, yeah

Also if we're going via that route we should try and get data for all posts, not just TPs
