[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Potentially bad keyword in body (1): Tautomerism doubt by thewitness. on chemistry.SE

The reason to use a virtualenv is mostly if you use your server/instance/internet gerbil to run more than one python application that relies on the same library but different versions of the library. As a contrived example, if Smokey needs tld 0.9.0 but your other application needs 0.6.0 and can't be upgraded, you'd have a conflict using the system installed tld because they are different versions. Virtual environments allow each application to set up it's own python environment

@ArtOfCode Why use sudo -H? Having read about it looks like we want to use the root's home environmental variable instead of whatever user is running that command?

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Bad keyword with email in answer (86): How to use gmail account for ssrs email subscription ✏️ by ALD on stackoverflow.com

@Andy I... do not have this problem :)
@Henders I tend to install packages globally, which you need sudo to do
and if you omit -H, pip complains

makes a note to add documentation on how to set up Smokey virtualenv

4:28 PM
@ArtOfCode Is this consistent with how I've installed the rest with the docs? For example, when I followed the instructions the first time I did sudo pip3 install -r requirements.txt --upgrade. I literally have no idea the difference between these which is why I'm asking :)

@Henders basically the same thing

So the sudo -H pyton... is just a personal preference?

python3 -m pip is more consistent longhand for pip3, -H flag on sudo is just to stop pip complaining

Oh, that's interesting. Consistent because it will always find the appropriate pip or?

not so much that as just the pip3 shortcut isn't always there
if you run pip, that could be python 2 or 3; pip3 will always be python 3 but it isn't always available; python3 -m pip is always python 3 and always available as long as pip is installed

@SmokeDetector This looks like it might be just NAA from a confused user. However, it feels more like spam to me. There's really no good reason for the person to be "working now with" the data in a paid-for essay that was posted 2 years ago. In addition, the user has been deleted, which implies that a moderator may have found more information to justify that it's spam.
