Hey @Undo, what d'ye think of this?
web-based SQL console for your database, integratable into your existing app

sets off all kinds of warning bells
Cool, though

@Undo there's the thing - it did for me initally, too.
Most things are covered - the only abuse vector I'm still seeing is people running heavy queries and DOSing the server

First, we should probably figure out how to export consumable data dumps
Host them on S3 and mark the public, and you're ready to go

Could add a query timeout to the MySQL server to avoid that, which would probably be a sensible idea anyway given the length of time some searches run for

Morning

12:09 AM
'Morning!

@Undo some shell commands and an SQL script

So what columns do we actually need to exclude?
users.email, token, password, to start

# export-dump.sh
mysqldump metasmoke_production > dump.sql
mysqladmin create dump_database
mysql dump_database < dump.sql
mysql dump_database < sanitize.sql
with relevant usernames and passwords where required, which can just go in source since this doesn't need to be put on GH

Would be nice to be able to deploy it with Cap, though

shrug you'd have to make modifications for that, since I have zero clue how it works

12:14 AM
@ThomasWard you didn't actually break smokey then, it just violated some ratelimiting backoffs on the API. Back in the day, we used to got them a lot, but now they shouldn't be fixed, so it's a little strange that it popped up....

Right now I'm interested by github.com/twitter/AnomalyDetection

@Andy good game :)

is there a way to make smokey get flagging again without restarting him after telling him to !!/stopflagging?

You have to ping one of angus, Art, Andy or me
Restarting Smokey won't do anything either, stopflagging just tells metasmoke to change a setting

@dorukayhano MetaSmoke handles the determination of whether something gets flaged.
@dorukayhan Smokey has the real-time post code, which feeds to MS, which in turn lets things work; so until the setting is switched MS side, as @Undo said, even a Smokey restart doesn't restart flagging

12:18 AM
@ThomasWard oh

@Undo or hichris

MetaSmoke has no realtime post parsing. Smokey has no flagging code.
to summarize

@Undo full sanitization SQL:
-- sanitize.sql
ALTER TABLE `api_keys`
	DROP `key`;

ALTER TABLE `api_tokens`
	DROP `code`,
	DROP `token`;

DROP TABLE `flags`;

DROP TABLE `ignored_users`;

ALTER TABLE `smoke_detectors`
	DROP `access_token`;

ALTER TABLE `users`
	DROP `email`,
	DROP `encrypted_password`,
	DROP `current_sign_in_ip`,
	DROP `last_sign_in_ip`,
	DROP `reset_password_token`,
	DROP `reset_password_sent_at`,
	DROP `api_token`;

Can't actually drop stuff, though, that'll bork stuff on import.

Depends if the dump tries to delete and recreate tables, or just fill existing tables with data

12:21 AM
if you configure the dump to create a temp table that contains a copy of the dump, then alter that temporary table, and dump that you don't break imports.

Not sure

that said, it's much more painful
(1) dump. (2) create temporary database. (3) dump -> temporary (4) alter temporary (5) dump temporary. (6) modified dataset

or you could just UPDATE... SET...
@ThomasWard this is precisely what those shell commands and dump SQL do

indeed
oops
@ArtOfCode didn't see any shell code, already looked now and saw it

look further up :P

12:24 AM
system accidentally punted Google Chrome into the "kill it" list

That was an accident?

glares at @JanDvorak

-- sanitize.sql
UPDATE `api_keys` SET `key` = '';
UPDATE `api_tokens` SET `code` = '', `token` = '';
DROP TABLE `flags`;
DROP TABLE `ignored_users`;
UPDATE `smoke_detectors` SET `access_token` = '';
UPDATE `users` SET
	`email` = '',
	`encrypted_password` = '',
	`current_sign_in_ip` = '',
	`last_sign_in_ip` = '',
	`reset_password_token` = '',
	`reset_password_sent_at` = NULL,
	`api_token` = '';
that's the alternative

12:40 AM

When we ask SE about autoflagging we really should ask about getting a second API key

[ SmokeDetector | MS ] Pattern-matching website in answer: Concerns/Considerations for making mead with raw honey? by GCK on homebrew.stackexchange.com

@angussidney looks like it. I don't know much about it, but the branch hasn't had any commits in a while
Likewise with the post notes feature, which I got halfway through and then stopped
This is the thing about hobby projects with just a few volunteer developers - there are more features that would be useful than the devs have time or inclination to do :)

Yeah, I'm hoping to get some time to learn rails soon so that I can help too... but I have already said that I'm going to work on that 2.x-3.x conversion so I'll have to at least get a start on that before I get distracted by anything else :)

1:18 AM
Honestly, I'd do rails first. More fun, more practically useful
the 2-3 conversion is another big thing that we need to spend some time on, so I'd be tempted to delay it until we're happy with autoflagging anyway
And with a Python background, it really doesn't take long to pick up Rails and Ruby

True

Plus you get to build shiny things on metasmoke.

And since I've done a bit of Django I won't have to wrap my head around the MVC model

^ the real reason I'm here
@angussidney yeah, that'll help. I'd done no MVC stuff when I learned. I knew the principle, but not how it worked in practice.

I think the real reason you're here is because your inbox gets drowned in pings when you're not here :P

1:22 AM
@angussidney also that :)
3-4 overnight is pretty common. I woke up to 15 notifications from here once.

Now that I think of it, we have a really high bus factor for some parts of MS
You are the only one I think that knows much about the API code and filters

Yup. Undo's fine for the API itself, I think, but I did design the OAuth system without explaining it, and the filters took me a good two hours to wrap my head around.
I still don't entirely trust them. That's the black-voodoo-magic bit of MS.

o/

\o
@ArtOfCode I think everything around here is stuck together with little bits of masking tape :P

what magic is going on here now??

1:30 AM
The sockets, on the other hand, are firmly in Undo's domain. I know nothing.
@Edity the black voodoo sort

lol

@angussidney mostly, yes. That said, the masking tape we use is actually pretty strong masking tape most of the time.

pokes tape

And we do quite well on the hardware side of things.

^ I can agree with that, certainly

1:33 AM
mostly because our hardware requirements are "a toaster, preferably two"

ydaetskcoRI've inherited an old PC from my girlfriend's dad and when setting up the printer I got a bit of a surprise: Two questions spring to mind here: Why does Windows think my wireless keyboard is a toaster? Why does Windows even have an icon for a toaster in the devices menu?

2:14 AM
hi guys

@Edity privileges give you access to administrative commands in smokey. We run that on a trust system - as in, we trust people with privileges not to intentionally misuse them. When you had privileges before, that didn't work out. Tell me why it's going to work out this time?
And a second question which may or may not have an obvious answer: what do you want privileges for?

@MarkYisri hey

@MarkYisri as in you'd like privs? Have you read this?

I just want to make sure that I'm giving you these for the right reason, and we're not just going to have a repeat of last time - there wouldn't be much point in doing it if that's all that's going to happen.

Of those 238,966 comment flags, 35,610 were mine. I accounted for a full 14.9% of the comment flags on Stack Overflow in 2016.
This is down from the 17% in 2015 and 300 fewer flags due to a couple days where I fubar'd my application.
However, I only had 12 declined comment flags all of 2016

Oh, wow. Never seen that before.

@ArtOfCode I'd be interested what SE has to say about it
Planning on contacting next week, I take it?

@Mithrandir not yet, but now I do. Can't promise to be very active though.

8:36 AM
@Magisch yeah, when they're all more likely to be around and sober.
I don't see them having major problems with it. Undo told a few people in TL that we were doing this, and they weren't concerned. I don't think SE will be either.

@ArtOfCode sorry, what does TL stand for? Is it a moderator chatroom?

I have no access :P

Well, you're not a mod

That'd be because it's mod only :)

8:39 AM
It's for all the mods on the network.

Yeah, I figured that out of course.

@Glorfindel I submitted an edit a week ago or so to make it stricter, so it doesn't cause many false positives but also misses more genuine hits
that one had seven levels and the stricter version requires eight

OK, thanks.

if you can find good samples to help determine what exactly the limit should be, another edit might be called for
I went with the samples I was manage to scrape together, where the TPs all had eight or more
six or seven could still fly but it's a bit hard to tell
I wasn't able to search using regex, apparently MySQL does't know how to apply a regex over multiple lines (I guess?)
hmmm, stackoverflow.com/questions/36199292/… suggests \n should work

IDK, sorry.

err, sorry, I'll edit the link

9:43 AM
Maybe you need \r\n or something?

hmmm, I don't think so, hang on ...
nope
but hey, <blockquote>.*<blockquote> works!

five repetitions gets me 166 hits, out of which 16 are false positives
six gets me 11 false positives
with seven, still 6 false positives
