indeed.
On a different note: what's with no spam during the daytime?

I don't know, but yesterday balpha dropped into the Tavern and paid some attention to Smokey reports. Coincidence?

perhaps.

There is generally a pause in SE activity around the turn of UTC day. And no spam.

And on a different different note: thanks @Normal for adding stuff to Smokey's blacklist. I'll try and help if you need it... I know it isn't fun to be working on something alone.
And on a different different different note:

So, the string is unicode but writing into file requires us to choose an encoding.

yeah.
But what even is users.txt?

The blacklist?

no, that's blacklisedUsers.txt.

Well, users.txt is never being read from, so the only explanation is that @Undo uses it for some sinister purpose.

12:12 AM
sinister = check if the users went poof
@Undo do you still use that? ^

Since the file keeps all reports, true and false, including all-caps and whatnot, checking all those users must be tedious.

@Normal Oh and we have metasmoke now...

By the way, I didn't try to fix this bug because I thought you know that part better:

And if I were to start that back up, it'd be through Metasmoke because that's easier to parse.
Safe to nuke AFAIK

Funny enough, this was Smokey's 2000th commit.

So that's why you were looking for a bug to fix.

I... actually wasn't. :P
I just went to the GitHub page after pushing and went 'oh, nice round number'.

@hichris123 purely removing code is a good 2000th commit IMO.

Might as well ask, what was the goal of Thermite/Charcoal (neither are loading, and the readmes are lacking details)?

Thermite is supposed to batch-flag at some intervals to annoy mods less.
I.e., given a bunch of things to flag, will do it gradually.

I thought that was Wildfire?

Okay, then I have no idea.

2:17 AM
@KevinBrown Thermite was to give additional details in flags (since flags are limited to 500? characters, there's not a lot of room for links). I'm wrong. I don't even remember what Thermite was. Oh right, batch fetching of SO comments w/ regexes to identify horrid comments.
Charcoal was for identifying comments to be flagged.
Unfortunately... it kinda stopped.
A user annoyed mods with it, who complained to CMs, and the CMs said 'please stop for now'. So we did.
If anyone is bored:

I processed comments 359 days out of the year. I missed three in January due to stopping it after a mass decline of flags (more later), I can't account for a missed day in July and August. I don't recall stopping it, but I missed July 3rd and August 19. I also missed December 28th due to a power issue.
I flagged 35,960 comments. Of that, 111 were declined

After that January incident I made three changes that improved accuracy/acceptance of flags:

I'm just going to put this out here - pejorative jabs at us doing minimally intrusive things to ensure that we succeed as a company and continue to provide these sites absolutely free have the strange side effect of us tending not to bother listening to constant sources of noise. If you don't want to be left talking only to yourself, try to have some constructive things breaking the monotony of complaint, or try thinking just a little before slamming rubbish into text input boxes - (posted after removing certain comments). This kind of sporadic spam is much harder to detect than supplements. It's something totally different every time.
I wonder if link-at-end would make sense for Stack Apps, if it whitelisted links to Github, etc.
OTOH when the activity is low, it takes long for the post to be processes, anyway.

I'm not too worried about catching it on Stack Apps. I see every single post and visit several times a day. (Taking hours to get rid of it can be a bummer though.)

I have a potential feature request/idea, but have a question first. The tp/fp reports that smokey receives, these are stored in a database somewhere, correct?
Assuming it is, would it make sense to move the rules themselves to a database? Since they are almost all regexes, we could simply store the regex in a database table. The benefit is that Smokey doesn't need a new commit every time the regex changes. It would need a way to be signaled that one has been added/edited/deleted, but it saves the commit/build/pull/restart that is required when a rule is modified

@Andy Yes, those go directly to MetaSmoke database. There is a difference in that Undo is the only one who runs MetaSmoke; unlike SmokeDetector which ProgramFOX hosts in his absence.
Another thing is that many additions (at least by me) are modifications to existing regexes, which require digging into the code anyway. For example, there is a pretty big regex for spam domain which is of the form (word from set 1)(whatever)(word from set 2)(whatever.tld) It's quite effective for detecting new spam sites, but adding new options to it is something that shouldn't be done blindly, from chat.

If we wanted to, we could probably catch all the same spam and reduce false positives by inspecting only the first... 500 character of the post, and the last 500.
And that's pretty generous, could be 200.
There doesn't seem to be a real need for this, just mentioning.

Welcome to Math.SE, S.KOT. Titles in all caps are strongly discouraged: they come across as shouting. (from a bot)Normal 21 secs ago

@Normal yay
@Normal Yeah. Though I may be annoyed with some changes SE is making, this I have no qualms with. I saw some of the comments he was referring to, one was on how this is for investors. And while that might be true... ads are the primary source of income.

Actually, I'd like to know that, out of curiosity. Are they really? Surely it's their private thing, but it'd be interesting to know where the main income comes from.
(a) Careers > 2*Ads; or (b) Ads > 2*Careers; or (c) neither, they are about the same.

@Andy Quite interesting, thanks. Are you focusing on rude/abusive, or obsolete?
@Normal I don't think they'd answer that, but it would be interesting.

Seems obsolete, otherwise mods would not want him to wait 48 hours.

It's not a 48 hour delay, I thought. Just that his model is looking at comments from the past 48 hours?

18 hours ago, by Andy
1.) Changed it to only look at comments that were 48 hours old. Previously it'd been more recent. The 48 hours was decided after talking to the SO mods.
"Previously it'd been more recent." => 48 is a lower bound for age

Q: Enhance moderation ability by encouraging excellent content

Madara UchihaI have a proposal, I've been upholding it for quite a while now, and I'd like to share my efforts with the rest of the high (30k+) reputation users. I found a way to both encourage great content and potentially enhance the number of users contributing to the moderation effort we have. Some of th...
