@DEAD replies are context. You discover this after spending some time in TL.

@ArtOfCode "Without questioN" is a little unfair. We all could see the thread. We can all read the community guidelines. This guy came across as incredibly entitled. Its probably fair to say that everyone who came across this and regarded it as worth a second of their time downvoted it

People (often CM's) say random stuff to random mods, and you think what? until you follow the reply chain.

@ArtOfCode Well, I've discovered that before spending time in TL.
What does that make me?

@Magisch yeah, point. I'm just amused that it's 100% downvotes.
@DEAD a pre-mod.

Cool
Where's my pre-mod swag?

8:12 PM
@ArtOfCode Well yeah, the "I'm so anti SE policy" crowd usually doesn't leave meta.SO

@DEAD good luck with that campaign
@Magisch true

It's annoying if a Smokey report is just as wide as the chat message space and when you try to click the ellipsis link in the end, the star/flag/reply thing hovers over it.
@ArtOfCode @undo What about making the metasmoke link in Smokey reports more wide to prevent this?

zaq
I usually change the browser zoom then. Not opposed to a wider link, but it should be unobtrusive. What character(s) should it use?

I ran into that a few days ago. It could be easily solved by moving the ellipsis earlier in the message, but I'm not sure how we could do that in a pretty-ish way.
Also, not sure it's a big enough problem to warrant change - but I don't have much data on it

What about replacing the link in the [ SmokeDetector ] prefix?

Might be a little disorienting without that prefix we've had for years, not sure.

zaq
I once proposed that, someone didn't like it (hichris, I think)

8:31 PM
I don't really like it, but I could probably be persuaded with a real example.

The prefix would stay, just point the link to the metasmoke post instead of the github repo.

Hrmph, that's interesting

Discussion of links to MS

This is what we went through earlier. (The [?] link was later found too obtrusive/annoying and replaced by the ellipsis.)

I honestly didn't mind the [?]. I think someone brought up in the Tavern though that it was annoying.

zaq
[?] vs ... is orthogonal to the issue at hand, because both suffer from the flaw Byte Commander pointed out.

8:39 PM
True, but... is it really worth fixing? I think this happens like once per 1k reports or something like that -- not too often.

zaq
It happens more often than that to me (with 125% zoom in Chrome, lines are shorter (no, not getting eyeglasses yet)).
I wonder if putting some whitespace after the link would fix it. Or invisible characters. Something nonbreaking, to force wrapping earlier.

Hmm... wonder if there's a meta report for something like this. Though at the rate chat changes, it would probably be better for us to fix.

Q: Teaser in chat a.k.a. chat post options overlap the message

PeeHaaWhen a link is shared in chat and it ends up in a specific position on the screen it is impossible to click it (without fiddling with the DOM). fyi, m.erwaysoftware.com and ms.erwaysoftware.com now redirect to metasmoke. Might be useful for saving a few chars on that link

@SmokeDetector why

@Seth Post - Keyword many thanks with link <a href="https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Scanner/Brother/"

zaq
@undo If using https, Chrome shows a scary message instead of redirecting: Attackers might be trying to steal your information from m.erwaysoftware.com

@zaq oh, because there's no HTTPS cert. Lemme fix that
@zaq How about now?

zaq
@undo Works now. 👍

9:02 PM
Awesome

zaq
We could make a longer line of dots: ………… (this is 4 ellipsis characters)
Would this be excessive/aanoying?

Might be, not sure
It almost looks like 2 or 3 would be enough to out-width the toolbar

zaq
Three weren't always enough in my tests. I do agree that excessive repetition is excessive.

How about this, with MS letters surrounded by dots?
Or _MS_

Might look better lowercase to get rid of some height, but otherwise I like it
Hmrph, not sure

zaq
Maybe <MS> or <ms>
Not as wide though

9:15 PM
﷽ would work if we're going for width :P
Maybe ؁ms؁

zaq
__ms__ a la Python
I think fancy shapes would become annoying after a while.

It'd be nice to have a really wide underscore-ish thing to use
؁ is kinda close, but a little wiggly still

zaq
Doubling underscores isn't a big expense. Especially with the metasmoke -> m savings

Indeed

Can you see those ^, @ByteCommander?
I think it's both unobtrusive and much wider.

I can see them, but they're still smaller than the hover toolbar.

Five dots instead of 3? .....
But this may become more obtrusive.

What was wrong with [ms]?

zaq
[ms] is relatively narrow

If we're just going for width, use the whole word
(metasmoke)
Or (ms report)
same length
Or put it up the start of the message. [ SmokeDetector (ms) ]

zaq
10:48 PM
There's also the thing about seeing (metasmoke) (metasmoke) (metasmoke) (metasmoke) (metasmoke) (metasmoke) at the end of every report
On the other hand, people got used to seeking [ SmokeDetector ] at the beginning...
So I think that could work.

@zaq It would certainly be the end of the world
@zaq I think the number or density of the dots doesn't matter. Their being a dot does.

Doesn't seem.. quite right

You're not used to it, of course not

the unbalanced brackets are triggering my OCD :P

Unbalanced? Where?

11:32 PM
Well not unbalanced

I actually rather like it

But the square brackets look a little lop-sided

Yeah, the content isn't centred in the square brackets, but... meh, it's text, it never will be
My thought is that moving it to the start of the message completely eliminates the problem, and means it doesn't have to be so wide

zaq
What if it was [ SmokeDetector | MS ] instead? More symmetric, no nested brackets.

Yeah, like that

11:34 PM
I like that too

Aye

I like it too

@ArtOfCode If you're making that change, go ahead and change metasmoke to m in the URL

I'm not right now, it's 00:36, but I will in the morning if nobody else has done it by then

I've got it

zaq
BTW it's a change that needs to be made in a few places in Smokey code, because there are places that parse chat messages and expect a particular link.

Cool

oh right.

11:37 PM
@ArtOfCode You are lucky, its 1:36

Tests might need checking too

Maybe this isn't a thing I should do right before going out to eat.

@undo probably a good idea

zaq
@undo I'll do it later.

sounds great, thanks

11:37 PM
Also, @undo @art, while you're in here, how hard is it to make smokey report to another site specific chatroom?

zaq
I was the last one who messed with that code, iirc.

Although somehow the tests passed on this one

@angussidney it's not

@angussidney Not very, although we try to reduce bloat where we can. Why?

zaq
@undo Tests wouldn't be affected. Parsing to get site/id, etc from chat reports...

11:38 PM
I was thinking of proposing to my main site whether or not they would like to get smokey for their site

@zaq Right, was responding to Art's thought

Of course, if you would prefer to keep the number of chatrooms to a minimum, thats fine too

@angussidney gaming? Take a look at metasmoke stats, see how much spam they get. If it's not much, it's probably not worth it.
