I just didn't see why this is something room owners couldn't handle if the room in question is worried, ie just warn someone and then kick them the same as if they post any other random crap continually that gets annonying.

There was one additional complication, but it's localized to SOCVR.

Wonder if Smokey shouldn't silently ignore users? There was someone in here the other day (a respected 100k user) giving feedback until I pointed out it was getting ignored. Maybe a ping back to say not privileged / ignored would be better?

@AshishAhujaツ not blatant spam. I mean the page does answer the question
Even I'm not sure if that's spam @Yvette. I've seen many users giving their own links. But this might be another case as the user posted the links in two answers

duplicated answers with the sole purpose of promoting the user's own site

I would've gone for naa. It's not actually fair spam nuking a post in which you aren't 100% sure. But yeah, one part of it looked like spam

OK, so logically, I should be effing those two posts so the net result is 1k?

It's starred on the right and has been there for days. not to mention ongoing discussion

That's best GIF

Plus there's been discussion to cut down the noise.
Jun 17 at 16:18, by Andy
I don't want to come across as stifling, but the purpose of this room is to deal with spam on the network. With that, we support Smoke Detector, Metasmoke and a few other quality projects. Can we keep the idle chatter to a minimum?

11:16 AM
OK not that thing linked again.

2 messages moved to Trash

@Yvette I was not talking about the chatter thing. I was talking about the piling

@AshishAhujaツ I know

@soup Sorry

Oh. I thought you were addressing that to my message

11:19 AM
But really, I thought @Ashish knew about the whole "stifling" thing

@soup thanks

@TIPS I know it. Andy had written the message when I was active

Then what the duplicate feedback

@TIPS I don't understand why you would post another annoying GIF when I post a pinned message requesting to keep the noise down. It shows a lack of consideration for what the ROs want

@Yvette By some standards, this chatter itself is noise. I wouldn't produce noise when there are Smokey reports flooding in, never.

11:22 AM
Basically, the room wants it's original intention of being a quiet place, to provide feedback for SD and for the SD developers to be able to discuss SD

Point taken, next time, I won't let the GIF one-box.
@Yvette I'm in, if I see this thing get more formalized and all. But it doesn't.
At least, it hasn't.

@TIPS in other words, you will not take my advice, referencing the pinned and starred posts of the room? You need it set down in some type of law? Rather than take the advice of a regular?

@Yvette Don't interpret it that way.
I'm saying, that if we want to reduce noise and dupe feedback, I mean REALLY, tell me then.
I don't see it happening.

@TIPS I did just tell you.

Can't we quit this discussion?

11:27 AM
Maybe there should be a meta-Charcoal chat or what.
@Ferrybig Sure
@Yvette OK OK sorry

[ SmokeDetector ] All-caps answer: compressing texs, recreating texts? by JACKIE on stackoverflow.com

@SmokeDetector k

There also might be a need for a script that highlights messages beginning with "SD/sd/Sd" or ones that are reply to Smokey so we don't lose feedback other users give.

11:30 AM
Or even better that smokey edits his message with the feedback it received

That is so better.
Ish.
What if it hits the 500-char limit?
Lengthening the messages has that disadvantage.
BTW @Yvette I hope we're good, no hard feelings.
If there is, then I'm sorry.

@TIPS it's fine.
@PeterJ sorry to be a bit thick, but can you elaborate?

@SmokeDetector n

I flagged as VLQ.

@Yvette It beeps on a Smokey report, so instead of seeing say (3) in the browser window and wondering if I should check for new spam it beeps and I know it's spam report. So it's the reason a bit of chatter doesn't worry me personally, also saves me checking back when it's just feedback not a new report.

11:37 AM
@PeterJ so similar to the chrome extension? That gives me notifications when there's a report

The userscript is a smaller version of the chrome extension, the userscript has less features

Ooookay. Let me be really clear here: I'm not going to let this feedback-piling-on thing cause drama and tear the room apart. People come first; feedback is somewhere near the bottom of the list of priorities.
8
@TIPS @AshishAhujaツ @Yvette

I'm back

ok

(just pinging everyone I can see who was involved last night)

What is it anyways with duplicate feedback, and why is it considered harmful? Isn't that just like multiple VLQ flags

@Undo the main issue I was addressing was the noise in the room

12:30 PM
@Undo alright.

@Magisch Causes noise, but it's not annoying enough for me to deal with drama coming from it
yesterday, by hichris123
@Undo Eh. I still think we're making a mountain out of a molehill. This isn't that big of an issue.

meh
I'm not touching this debate

I just asked for a noise reduction, but that didn't turn out too well

@Magisch I think one of the major points raised was gaming feedback.

What is there to game

12:35 PM
@Yvette Yeah, I saw. Noble cause, but maybe not worth it if people aren't going to respond well

@Magisch we make trains out of feedback which actually does not have any sense

@Undo yes I agree lesson learnt
I'm going to stick with the feedback and flagging, if I see something I don't like will email @ArtOfCode :D

I usually feed back on any post I end up flagging as spam

@Magisch I'm at least partially with you on this - there's only one borderline case of this happening and having a real effect in real life that I know of

Is that wrong?

12:36 PM
@Yvette Always a good plan ;)

@Undo ;)

@Undo What effect would that have? Not getting 4% blocked?

@Magisch Well, if someone beat you to it it's unnecessary, doesn't really give the system any more signal
@Magisch That's the theory

oh@Undo yes it's coming from that web app with the push notifications, I think it's in the php, so will address it as we rewrite the web app in asp.net mvc and see if there's a problem with how the data is being sent to urbanairship??

@Undo is it merely unnecessary or somewhat undesirable? Because I have a normal "workflow" so to speak when flagging posts. Open Post -> Flag -> Feedback

12:38 PM
@Magisch just unnecessary, really

conditionally checking if someone else has somewhere already would add extra work to that and make it less automated for me
Because when I see a true positive spam post (like most are) the rest of the process is sort of muscle memory

@Yvette Interesting. How are you sending the notification from PHP? Seems like there should be a simple fix for that
@Magisch Really the only harm it does is clutters rooms

@Undo Yes I agree, I have browsed the code and can find it for the android (interestingly) but not the iOs

@Undo Do you want me to make an effort to avoid duplicate feedback?

@Magisch Honestly, if SOCVR isn't bugged by it then I don't care much.

12:41 PM
@Undo so the rule is more of to this room?

If it's really obvious that someone already posted feedback, probably best to refrain, but I wouldn't let it become a burden

@Undo yeah. That looks likes a good feature

12:50 PM
@Undo How so? Click the link and it casts feedback?

Maybe
we could optinally move giving feedback to the userscript from @art aswell
and not go via chat
In that case I almost wouldn't at all have to feed back via chat.

@Magisch that makes a userscript mandatory to use Smokey, which I'd rather not do.

We can keep the chat feedback channel
just provide a no-clutter alternative
hence "optionally"

Anyway, @Undo if click-link, cast-feedback is what you're thinking, that's probably a bad idea.
Creating stuff should never be done via GET requests.
because CSRF

And even if it isn't intended spammy at all, it's good to be notified when somebody like that user posts a thing.

@ByteCommander but our goal isn't to blacklist users for that kind of content, it is for spam posts

This one is on the edge, I think.

That looks a lot like spam.

3:55 PM
And misspelling "custoomer" to avoid that filter as well as obfuscating the phone number which would have triggered another filter...

I would not be sure if that is spam or not, as you know, it might be a user just asking a original q. But yeah, the post looks like spam it has a number..

So as blacklisting does no harm and is a good way to get notified of further posts by that user, I think it's the best thing to do.

@Ferrybig Of course

The only reason it can fail is that ChatExchange isn't logged in at the moment it tries to get the user id, because them SE returns the token "meta.stackexchange.com" (in case of chat.meta.stackexchange.com) where ChatExchange looks for the token
So either we are querying the user id before the connection is done, or ChatEchange doesn't check properly if the connection is done

Hmm, maybe it is a race condition then.
