in other news, Martha Stewart drops the f-bomb on Wait Wait don't tell me:
STEWART: Because I have solved a problem, a lifelong problem of how to get the (bleep) oh, excuse me.

(APPLAUSE)

STEWART: The seeds out of a pomegranate.
so how do you ?
pomegranate's are AWESOME

I like this question.

Q: How can I power a projector outside away from any power sources?

XanI plan on setting up a projector outside to project on a giant concrete wall. The problem is that there are no outlets within any feasible distance. I've searched for portable/rechargeable AC power supplies, but they're apparently really expensive ($500+) and are unreliable. Are there any solu...

I'm totally building one.
Hey @TheEvilGreebo - re: your answer on the thread about breakers, they aren't American anymore, they're now owned by Siemens.
2
Q: What model circuit breaker is this?

RickI live in an old 50 + year old house and it still has the original circuit breakers. I am trying to search for one that died, but don't know the model or even if they make these anymore. If any electricians out there can help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. I haven't removed it (Kinda' sc...

@KarlKatzke American is still listed as a manuf on that store page I gave, though
so presumably they would sell you the right kind
@TheEvilGreebo imgur.com/a/nH93y#8 - It's an Electri-Center box though, which traces back to Siemens.
but regardless if that guy touches the panel with his level of knowledge I fear a darwin award
Oh god, i'd be scared to touch that panel.
16:57
hey i totally missed that before
i looked at all the pics - that was hard to see
Even AFTER I had the power company shut off the power at the meter.
it's NP; it also looks like the box has been cut out a bit
residual electricity fears? :)
Extreme sense of caution. I don't want ANYTHING live inside that box, because there's a 90% chance it will be coming out of the wall. Make that 98% chance.
16:58
<-- just finished putting down some floor leveling patch in the bathroom
we're closing in on the finish line
Got the big hole in my slab patched, but had to travel for a week. Girlfriend's coming up to help me pour self-leveling concrete this weekend. :D
got a little more mud work to do (filling in some areas with thick layers), grouting, paint, floor and fixtures
Awesome!
nice - seal the holes! ;)
I used s/l concrete once and missed a hole - it was funny - perfectly level floor except for one little funnel shape in the corner
although one wonders just how much help you need pouring s/l conc...
sounds like an excuse to me!
Heh. Due to the heat expansion here, I end up using silicone caulk to caulk backer rod along the perimeter of the room.
17:01
backer rod?
yeah, foam tube basically.
17:01
that's to line the concrete?
border i mean
Yeah, to provide a border. For expansion and contraction space so it doesn't tent and crack when the sun hits it.
You don't want the SLC contacting the sill plate of the framing
right
@Tester101 that WAS cool
The more I look at those pictures on the breaker question, the more I cringe.
the downside of this phase of the renovation is it's the "do something and wait for it to dry/cure" stage
15 mins of work, an hour of waiting
@TheEvilGreebo A great time to start writing that blog.
17:07
@Tester101 i suppose I should get my account info out of storage...
@TheEvilGreebo Actually, I always say it's a 2 person job because you should have someone a) pouring the cement while you hold the mixer, and b) running buckets if you're doing multiple-bag pours, which we are.
gotcha
@Tester101 what's the admin url again?
well too late, the moment's gone, not logging in now!
;)
hah
Yeah, I don't expect to get any blogging done before Xmas because I'm working two projects ... extreme tiling and we're also re-siding the exterior since it's cool enough during the day to work outside.
17:46
thanks, i'm back in the tool. Not working on it today but I'll put it on my calendar
I forget - what happens in chat when I hit 20k ?
A steam powered generator could generate the power you need, and supply heat to keep you warm on those chilly nights. Only one downside... You'd have to build a steam powered generator. — Tester101 1 hour ago
LOL
no, punkin chunkin
those guys are neat
no, they're messy
yeah, but it all happens downrange

not always

bingo!
not to mention when they pie

Q: How can I add insulation to this roof?

erikWe have an A-frame house in Alaska. The ceiling is 2x8 rafters 16" on center with drywall on inside and 5/8" plywood on outside. We installed R-44 insulation in space, no vapor barrier, no air space. We don't want to remove the plywood since the roof is so steep (slope is 19:12). Can we ins...

He's gonna freeze to death this winter with his current situation.
Sorry, I was trying to link to the question, not my answer...
8" rafters on a cold ceiling A-frame assembly in Alaska in winter ... he's gonna have icicles on the inside. Every 16 inches.
18:26
Yikes, took me forever to get logged in here
Woah, it's @shirlockhomes on a weekday!
it's cold outside and on a lunch break lol
up to a balmy 42
brrr. I'm freezing me arse off at 58.
I think it's time to move the contracting indoors
was gonna ask Evil how he edited my long link into a short phrase??????
18:28
Ah, above the answer box there's a link icon
just finishing up a deck... think I'll do some inside trim this afternoon, if I get motovated. lol
After you give it a link, it highlights a "your text here" bit to fill in
does that take the link and allow you to rename it?
Ok great. thanks
you can also go old school and type [google link here](http://google.com) with the brackets and parens to get google link here
ok that is above my pay grade!!
18:30
:)
I always miss the Thursday thing. damn this working for a living.
trying to retire a bit
we need to mix up the schedule to get others in here that work. what time is best for you?
usually after 5 or 6pm. rarely get done work by 4. however it's getting dark here at 4 430 so it will be very slow over the holidays
for some reason, folks hate having the bathroom or kitchen torn apart during the holidays. lol
45 and sunny here in shit hole buffalo
I'll have to see if others are open to mixing up the schedule
18:34
sure thing.. might get a few more folks from the west a little later also
Aarthi sends her best... well, actually she sends "bananas" which I believe means she's stuck in a meeting and can't say hi.
lmao. she is such a sweetie. do u work there also?
or you have a direct link to her!!!!! hehehe
they give us secret access after they stick us with a mod badge.
cool. you guys have been doing a great job. many thanks
we try our best, I just like being able to learn something new each day.
18:40
I keep trying to forget something every day... think it is an old person thing. lol
hahaha
I had a lot of trouble logging in a few minutes ago. will try to get back at 3 for the forum. gotta go move the chop saw and install some extension jams.. warmer inside. later guys
efffff. my homemade water dust collector works great, but the lid I used for it broke.
Gonna have to wait until I empty out a real bucket and use that lid.
keep warm!
And I need to use mechanical connections instead of trying to depend on just silicone to hold it together.
I'm too used to software development, where I get to version things without delays in development. :(
18:47
Duct tape to the rescue
use liquid nails!
it'll hold a hammer to the ceiling in no time flat! (remember the commercial?)
this conference call should take about 3 minutes flat - have to tell a 3rd party IT dept their SSL VPN collection doesn't support Windows 7 / IE 9 and f**k off - i'm not rolling back to XP / IE 7 - so fix your shit.
sorry, didn't mean to curse
Hmn... good idea... that might get me through today until I can get a real lid.
@lsiunsuex Shockingly, Liquid Nails Silicone Adhesive is what failed, where the GE 3 hour weatherproof silicone did not fail.
Nah, @lsiunsuex I'm pretty sure we're all in IT here and "fix your ****" is part of our daily parlance.
@KarlKatzke hows the floor coming anyways ?
new pics?
I had to travel for the last week, left Thurs and just got in last night, so I'm just back here and working on it today.... no real new pictures except of the hole i filled with new concrete.
Real progress comes this weekend...
cool
where'd you go?
18:55
I've been toying with ways to reduce the speed at which I go through vacuum filters since last Thursday and just broke my solution.
Houston area for meetings with vendors with a brief side trip to Chicago. Tons of fun.
We found a little problem with some of our bajillion dollars worth of HP hardware and they sort of wanted someone in person rather than having everyone on a conference call.
And since I'm so close...
I had to wear a tie, which sucked. I wanted to wear one of my thinkgeek t-shirts, because HP can go !@#$ themselves in the !@$%
hate to say it but we don't experience that many problems with dell poweredge servers
random hard drive failure but thats to be expected as they age
Yeah, I know, but our VP of IT has an inherent hate of Dell servers and refuses to buy them. We got tired of being screwed by IBM so we threw out all their stuff and bought HP. Now we're getting screwed by HP.
but, we're not a big windows / linux shop - we're mostly ibm mainframe
19:00
So what are they doing? We're looking at !@#$ing Sun/Oracle hardware now that we're tired of being screwed by HP.
interesting
Yeah, i wish we were running on mainframe-class hardware, this is for our production Oracle databases.
But IBM screwed us so badly with support on the bladecenter and low-end SAN market that we weren't willing to upgrade with them.
... ibm can be assholes
Pretty epic ones. And we don't have enough yearly spend that we could swing it back in their faces.
wtf. meeting canceled. i was looking forward to yelling at someone today
19:04
hahahahahaha
pwnt.
I wanted to wear either this shirt: thinkgeek.com/product/e5c1 or this shirt: thinkgeek.com/product/e716 to the HP meeting.
i like the black one
Although this one might have been more appropriate. thinkgeek.com/product/388b
they dont sell it anymore - amazon.com/ThinkGeek-Hacker-Work-Shirt/dp/B0001TOYW0/… ust to wear this to work - boss yelled at me and told me not to wear it cause it could be miss interpreted :(
cut the patch off of it and sowed it onto my laptop bag
I really should go to work for ThinkGeek, their office is just down the street from me
That's BS. I would've torn the patch off, and handed it to him the next day with my two week. I find it's easier to get a new job than to put up with BS like that.
19:17
shweet - tuaw.com/2012/11/15/… goodfella's 2!
@KarlKatzke i could tell you some stories... the shit i get yelled at for is amazing
I probably share half of them with, you @lsiunsuex ... my "f it, new job time" policy came after four and a half years working at a public university.
we have a sister company thats makes something we use. for a while, they were coming to our office often (multiple times a day) so PURELY out of curiosity, i friended them on twitter JUST to see what they were up to - i got yelled at the next day, because my twitter profile said "i do fucking everything" and they were worried that clients could see that on their twitter account
which anyone that knows how twitter works and know what "private profile" means, knows thats not the case
That's one of those "separate circles" venn diagrams -- people who know how twitter works, and people who work in marketing.
19:58
I'm going to kick off the party and run away, things are too crazy lately...
Welcome to Project Update Thursday
OK, only progress for me to report is that I finally got the hole in my slab filled...
And I still haven't gotten that !@#$ing truck I bought titled because our DMV is a bunch of idiots, although I did manage to extract a temp tag from them and have made a few dump runs which have made me very happy.
Everybody loves a good dump.
4
And I think that closes down project update thursday. :D
I painted some doors.
Now I've got to peel off the latex over oil on the frames.
i... disconnected the hose and put it in the garage!
20:07
Anna's taking a course on Saturdays, so I'm left entertaining the forces of destruction in my house instead of repairing their damage.
@lsiunsuex Note to self... Hose, and drain faucet before frost.
And my Nephew Jack is off Oxygen, day AND night.
probably should find the cut off in the basement and bleed the line...
@ChrisCudmore awesome
Cutoffs? Basements? Damnyankees.
Yeah, it's just inside the wall from the outer outlet. And I made sure the contractor left me access to it before he drywalled.
if we didn't have a basement, the wife might actually have to sell something we don't have room for
3
Oh, here, that's what people use their garages for. They put things that are worth absolutely nothing in the garage, and park the vehicle worth tens of thousands of dollars in the driveway.
20:10
Hi guys
oh, we use the garage for storage also...
I use the garage for the car. I hate brushing it off when it snows.
Also, I use the engines of two cars every night to keep the garage from freezing.
@shirlockhomes whats up! always see your responses, never see you in chat
My truck is too tall to fit in the garage... sleeps outdoors
He has a non-sit-at-the-pooter all day job.
@shirlockhomes Sounds like a home improvement project to me!
20:12
been a busy season. hope it slows down a bit soon
@ChrisCudmore I hope you have a carbon monoxide detector in your house. Any leak in the drywall in the garage...
No, I don't run them.
always slows down around the holidays
There's enough heat in an engine block to keep the garage from freezing if I park there at night.
@ChrisCudmore Oh, sorry, misunderstood. People down here have been known to panic and do that when it freezes down here, especially if they own a diesel.
20:14
pffft. Cars will always start down to -20 C
You've gotta be in the Yukon or Winnipeg for that.
Yeah, well, Texans.
We'll get a couple nights in the Jan. freeze up where it gets that could. But generally we're between +5 and -10 all winter.
Celcius.
hit's 10 t0 20 below F here alot soon. sucks
Admittedly, most of our power plants that use a water/steam cycle as opposed to direct-drive gas turbines did blow up down here when it got below 10 degrees last year.
lets see what is that in C ?
20:15
That's 10 degrees F, btw.
@shirlockhomes You're in Maine right?
syup
Ayup i mean
lol
type much?
fat fingers
cold fingers don't hit keys well
20:16
sore and always busted up too.
smashed the hell out of my left ring finger three weeks ago, still hurts bad... haven't done that in years
@shirlockhomes That's -30 C. Are you sure it gets that cold? You're not very much north of me
were west of portland in the foot hills. ya it gets down there a few nights every year
All this sub zero talk means it's coffee time. Back in a bit.
-10 is common
what's the project of the day?
bmitch, you still doing habitat?
Don't really have one ... seems everyone's been slackin'
20:21
I got a bunch going, wanna come on up and give me a hand? lol
have to finish remodeling the spare bedroom but i cant find where i put the electrical wire and i dont want to buy more
free pizza to who ever comes to help!
don't give out free beer!!! nothing comes out right.
@shirlockhomes You only give them the beer after the job is done.
after we fix my shitty plaster job on the joints and wire the lights, i'll make brick oven pizza and we'll have beer (or you have beer and i'll have wine - get drunker that way)
I'm just finishing up the interior remodel on the Forbes lane house, last fiberglass floor goes down Sat morn... got the little 12X12 deck decked over yesterday. Railings in a couple of days
20:24
almost worth a trip.
bought this house last August, redid the entire house.
I'll have to figure out how to put some before and after pics on for you guys
@shirlockhomes Wish I was making that kind of progress.
Oh. That reminds me... I walked through a doozy of a flip a couple weeks ago.
It has taken a lot of my for pay time away, but it's an investment property so I'll see the $$$ later on
New kitchen was nice, but all the plumbing was run through the unconditioned garage.
20:26
where?
Rut Ro!
a flip and run? huh?
The flippers must've been from the south.
They moved the laundry hookups from the basement up to the second floor, but didn't put in a drain.
I gotta buy another one to flip soon. almost done here
20:28
So the washer is supposed to drain on the floor, I guess?
where is gonna drain the washer to?
blink blink
run the hose out the window!
Oh yeah... They also ran a flexible gas line about 30' to the new kitchen.
I have to say that as a homeowner and a DIYer I hate seeing that thing, especially if I talk to the people who did the flipping (FSBO or similar) and they're expecting way over market value and I have to tell them that I wouldn't even pay appraisal value because it's gonna gut ...
@Tester101 Outside or inside the wall?
20:30
Damn. Did the inspector let that go?
@shirlockhomes get a dropbox.com account and make the folder public - put the photos there
@shirlockhomes I guess so, the house was for sale.
@shirlockhomes No drain or floor drain on 2nd floor = probably wasn't an inspection
They probably didn't pull permits.
@KarlKatzke Through the basement/crawlspace.
@Tester101 It's possible to use the larger yellow flexline for that application and it'll pass down here ... I have about 15' of it my wall. They're doing entire houses with larger diameter flex line. Now, if you mean they daisy-chained supply lines...
20:31
I got a dropbox on google, but haven't loaded it yet. be a project for my son when he gets home for Thansgiving
laundry hookups were in a closet in a room on the first floor, light switch for the room is in the closet behind where the washer will go.
@shirlockhomes No ... www.dropbox.com ... download and install the software, drag the pictures into the 'public' folder that you want to be public, and after it's done uploading then right click on them and get the 'copy link' and just paste it in here and we'll all be able to see it.
I just put in natural gas here and my sub said he had to use black pipe up to so many inches from fixture. maybe he is just fussy
@KarlKatzke It was split off the main, then run horizontally along the basement/crawlspace ceiling then up into the kitchen addition.
@shirlockhomes My understanding was that you can only run flex pipe vertically, but I'm not a pipefitter so what do I know.
I'll get some pics off wife's Apple. she has been documenting the project start to finish
I really don't know the code on that stuff. I trust my HVAC guy for that.
20:36
@shirlockhomes It would make a great blog post.
I try not to mess with gas as much as possible.
ya it would be fun. Could write the steps and materials etc. sounds like a good winter project
we use black pipe up to 3 feet from the fixture - flex lines shouldn't be longer than 3 feet here
'lo
I have seen some very bad things happen with gas. Lost my best friend when his house exploded back in 1984
@lsiunsuex You haz teh codez?
@ChrisF Did your dog take over for you?
20:38
no :( just how my father was trained to do it
seems that is what my guy says also
3:40! later.
@Tester101 Yeah (Web Apps on rotation at the moment)
Gotta tell you guys, I went with a Viesman on wall boiler with a separate zone hot water on demand...... Incredible 97% eff and costs a fraction of what oil used to cost in this house
largest bill last winter for heat, hot water, cooking and the fireplace logset was $130
@shirlockhomes You have radiators or baseboard heat?
20:42
FHW baseboards
We need to get a new boiler - we have a "combi" boiler (instant hot water) but it's thermostat has gone so the water alternates between almost scalding hot and cold. Luckily we've got a thermostatic mixer shower that evens out most of the variation.
I definately reccomend a modulated condensing type. Viesman made in Germany
You can't legally buy anything else in the UK any more :)
it senses the outdoor temp and adjusts the boiler temp to the baseboards
Can't buy what?
Non condensing boilers
The current one is less than 10 years old, but we think it's a little underpowered for the use we make of it - which is why it's starting to fail.
20:45
Ok, understand why, for sure
@Tester101 Interesting ... They ran it from about ten feet from the fixture horizontally (so that they didn't have to retap the black line) and another ten feet vertically. And it passed inspection. Possibly because it was in the attic and ventilated rather than in the basement or under the house?
@shirlockhomes Yeah, and then there's Indianapolis recently... that looks to have been a malfunctioning heater.
@shirlockhomes So your boiler supplies both FHW to the baseboards and DHW?
That was unbelevable, but my buddy's house dissappeared the same way.
his explosion was caused by propane
yes, there is a separate heat exchanger that works like a separate zone for DHW. The whole unit is like 24" X 12"
The main boiler is about 24X 36 8" deep
I can adjust the DHW temp with a knob on the unit.
digita read out etc
Sounds cool.
No problems getting water up to temp in the winter?
The water heater is mounted directly under the boiler with a loop
none
get hot water at tap in about 3 to 4 seconds and never stops
20:52
Nice.
think my unit is rated at 150f at 6 gals a minute
I have it set at 125 and can't run it down to even warm,,, love it
The nice thing about doing a complete rehab is putting in the newest technology and energy efficient apliances...
easy when all the walls are open and easy access to everything
I'm running around like a headless chicken, but I do have two quick announcements to make:
2
Q: What questions should we migrate to Gardening

BMitchPer this meta.so post, if we want to migrate old questions to gardening now, we need to build a list and coordinate with the Gardening site to get some agreement on a mass-migration. If you're wondering why, we can't migrate questions older than 60 days anymore. Important notes: We cannot give...

And we're going to get hats:
5
Q: Would you like a hat for the holidays?

BMitchStack Exchange is looking to have some fun for the holidays by giving people hats for various tasks around the site. These, unfortunately, aren't real hats, more like holiday badges that you can see on your gravatar. They hosted a holiday hat bash on the Gaming site last year, and have asked if o...

HATS!!!
Can I wear it on my pic by electronic/computer magic? lol
Still time for some PUTting?
21:03
@shirlockhomes That's the idea. They are cheap, so they're saving money be printing hats with electrons. :)
I'm replacing bedroom closet shelves
@NiallC. Neat!
@NiallC. I made the referee decision to extend it for as long as you guys want.
Oh so cool lmao
21:04
Awesome.
@KarlKatzke You obviously haven't seen my bedroom closet or anything else in my house for that matter. Neat is exactly what it's not
@NiallC. I was only talking about the color, finish, and assembly of the shelf.
I'm trying to decide between the cheap Rubbermaid style stuff and probably horribly expensive stuff from the container store or similar
I need a shelf over my kegorator for glasses and stiens
@KarlKatzke Color is nice, finish and assembly not so much :(
21:06
@NiallC. OK, it looks nice from the pictures.
The wire shelves are inexpensive
fairly easy to install if you can find your studs
@shirlockhomes Agreed, but they feel kinda flimsy.
After the current shelves, I'm looking for something that'll stand up to an earthquake
not if you use the full support braces, they will hold a fair amount of wieght
Yikes!!! no earthquakes please... we had a small one a couple of weeks ago
strange for this area
I just installed the rubbermaid shelving last month in a closet
I've also installed the elfa stuff in the past in a closet
The Rubbermaid modular system?
21:14
@Aaron elfa is one of the systems I'm looking at.
It works very much the same - you generally will need to cut it yourself for the HD stuff though, and you won't get a planner helping you out saying 'you really don't want 16" wide shelves here because this closet is too shallow for them'
@shirlockhomes yes
I found out the hard way that Rubbermaid makes two series of systems and the parts are not interchangable.
Yeah um
Shelftrack and something else
nice stuff however
@shirlockhomes Did not know that. Thanks
21:16
Direct Mount vs Shelf Track I think
Ok, this is hilarious -- A White House Petition
ya... one is open stock and the other is more in kits with add ons... next to eachother at lowes, so a bit confusing
Peacefully grant the people of the United States of America to have Grover Norquist be brought forth in chains and put in a public pillory. Once Grover Norquist has been secured, anyone who wishes will be allowed to punch him once, and only once, square in the dick.
@Chris, love it!!!!
Peacefully grant the State of Canada to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government
Looks like there might be some TROLLS on that site.
21:24
I'm also planning to replace the lights in the closet. Anyone know if NEC 2011 changed the clearance requirements?
I have two globe style, mounted on the wall above the sliding doors.
I plan on installing these:
@Niall those look great
I remember someone on the site talking about some changes to NEC in closets, but I can't remember what it was about
I'm too cheap to buy the new book. lol
4
Q: What about a light switch in the closet?

TroutOkay you guys I have next question. And like all good questions this one begins with a story. I was reading the post about a nick in a wire and read a couple of you mention that light switch in a closet is not to code. What's up with that? Why not? When I open a closet and it seems dark, I...

But I think @Tester101 quotes from NEC 2008
The closet is 37" deep and the biggest shelf I've seen is 20", so I think I'll be OK. It's always nice to be sure though :)
We always put the switch outside the closet.
I lighted switch is great because you know if the light is on when the door is closed
21:40
@NiallC.keep in mind that you may want to put things above your head, so a very deep shelf will inhibit you from putting large things on the top shelves because you can't manuver them around that deep shelf
it should never be more than 40 to 50% of the depth of the closet if the storage area is above the door height.
makes it hard to hide larger boxes from the kids up there.
My current broken shelf is 16" and it "feels" about right, so that's what I was thinking for a replacement.
if it feels good, do it!!! lol
4
But I was also thinking of adding more shelving lower down, so I was thinking 20" for them.
22:03

I would like everyone to pause for a moment in recognition of precisely how stupid I am. I don't know the difference between positive and negative.
2
@KarlKatzke golf clap
Remember that beautiful heat map of my living room floor that I did two weeks ago? I just realized that I had the directions of where things are high and low reversed ... and started spot-treating the area as if the high points were low points and vice versa.
I think this is what they call ** irretrievably retarded**
That is precisely appropriate.
Thank god I didn't start laying down the really expensive stuff yet.
22:17
@KarlKatzke Lemme guess, you waited until after PUT so that would be off the record?
No, I just discovered it.
All I have to say is ouch, I feel your pain.
It's after 5 ... time to get out of my easy chair at the computer and go work like a real human for a while.
It's not really a huge loss, I just lose some redgard and fiberglass I'd applied ...
But holy crap on a stick I can't believe how stupid I am.
On the bright side, I discovered it now, and before I tried to pour self-leveling cement in what I thought was a low point.
