Welcome to Project Update Thursday
OK, only progress for me to report is that I finally got the hole in my slab filled...
And I still haven't gotten that !@#$ing truck I bought titled because our DMV is a bunch of idiots, although I did manage to extract a temp tag from them and have made a few dump runs which have made me very happy.
Everybody loves a good dump.
4
And I think that closes down project update thursday. :D
I painted some doors.
Now I've got to peel off the latex over oil on the frames.
i... disconnected the hose and put it in the garage!
Nov 15, 2012 20:07
Anna's taking a course on Saturdays, so I'm left entertaining the forces of destruction in my house instead of repairing their damage.
@lsiunsuex Note to self... Hose, and drain faucet before frost.
And my Nephew Jack is off Oxygen, day AND night.
probably should find the cut off in the basement and bleed the line...
@ChrisCudmore awesome
Cutoffs? Basements? Damnyankees.
Yeah, it's just inside the wall from the outer outlet. And I made sure the contractor left me access to it before he drywalled.
if we didn't have a basement, the wife might actually have to sell something we don't have room for

Oh, here, that's what people use their garages for. They put things that are worth absolutely nothing in the garage, and park the vehicle worth tens of thousands of dollars in the driveway.
Nov 15, 2012 20:10
Hi guys
oh, we use the garage for storage also...
I use the garage for the car. I hate brushing it off when it snows.
Also, I use the engines of two cars every night to keep the garage from freezing.
@shirlockhomes whats up! always see your responses, never see you in chat
My truck is too tall to fit in the garage... sleeps outdoors
He has a non-sit-at-the-pooter all day job.
@shirlockhomes Sounds like a home improvement project to me!
Nov 15, 2012 20:12
been a busy season. hope it slows down a bit soon
@ChrisCudmore I hope you have a carbon monoxide detector in your house. Any leak in the drywall in the garage...
No, I don't run them.
always slows down around the holidays
There's enough heat in an engine block to keep the garage from freezing if I park there at night.
@ChrisCudmore Oh, sorry, misunderstood. People down here have been known to panic and do that when it freezes down here, especially if they own a diesel.
Nov 15, 2012 20:14
pffft. Cars will always start down to -20 C
You've gotta be in the Yukon or Winnipeg for that.
Yeah, well, Texans.
We'll get a couple nights in the Jan. freeze up where it gets that could. But generally we're between +5 and -10 all winter.
Celcius.
hit's 10 t0 20 below F here alot soon. sucks
Admittedly, most of our power plants that use a water/steam cycle as opposed to direct-drive gas turbines did blow up down here when it got below 10 degrees last year.
lets see what is that in C ?
Nov 15, 2012 20:15
That's 10 degrees F, btw.
@shirlockhomes You're in Maine right?
syup
Ayup i mean
lol
type much?
fat fingers
cold fingers don't hit keys well
Nov 15, 2012 20:16
sore and always busted up too.
smashed the hell out of my left ring finger three weeks ago, still hurts bad... haven't done that in years
@shirlockhomes That's -30 C. Are you sure it gets that cold? You're not very much north of me
were west of portland in the foot hills. ya it gets down there a few nights every year
All this sub zero talk means it's coffee time. Back in a bit.
-10 is common
what's the project of the day?
bmitch, you still doing habitat?
Don't really have one ... seems everyone's been slackin'
Nov 15, 2012 20:21
I got a bunch going, wanna come on up and give me a hand? lol
have to finish remodeling the spare bedroom but i cant find where i put the electrical wire and i dont want to buy more
free pizza to who ever comes to help!
don't give out free beer!!! nothing comes out right.
@shirlockhomes You only give them the beer after the job is done.
after we fix my shitty plaster job on the joints and wire the lights, i'll make brick oven pizza and we'll have beer (or you have beer and i'll have wine - get drunker that way)
I'm just finishing up the interior remodel on the Forbes lane house, last fiberglass floor goes down Sat morn... got the little 12X12 deck decked over yesterday. Railings in a couple of days
Nov 15, 2012 20:24
almost worth a trip.
bought this house last August, redid the entire house.
I'll have to figure out how to put some before and after pics on for you guys
@shirlockhomes Wish I was making that kind of progress.
Oh. That reminds me... I walked through a doozy of a flip a couple weeks ago.
It has taken a lot of my for pay time away, but it's an investment property so I'll see the $$$ later on
New kitchen was nice, but all the plumbing was run through the unconditioned garage.
Nov 15, 2012 20:26
where?
Rut Ro!
a flip and run? huh?
The flippers must've been from the south.
They moved the laundry hookups from the basement up to the second floor, but didn't put in a drain.
I gotta buy another one to flip soon. almost done here
Nov 15, 2012 20:28
So the washer is supposed to drain on the floor, I guess?
where is gonna drain the washer to?
blink blink
run the hose out the window!
Oh yeah... They also ran a flexible gas line about 30' to the new kitchen.
I have to say that as a homeowner and a DIYer I hate seeing that thing, especially if I talk to the people who did the flipping (FSBO or similar) and they're expecting way over market value and I have to tell them that I wouldn't even pay appraisal value because it's gonna gut ...
@Tester101 Outside or inside the wall?
Nov 15, 2012 20:30
Damn. Did the inspector let that go?
@shirlockhomes get a dropbox.com account and make the folder public - put the photos there
@shirlockhomes I guess so, the house was for sale.
@shirlockhomes No drain or floor drain on 2nd floor = probably wasn't an inspection
They probably didn't pull permits.
@KarlKatzke Through the basement/crawlspace.
@Tester101 It's possible to use the larger yellow flexline for that application and it'll pass down here ... I have about 15' of it my wall. They're doing entire houses with larger diameter flex line. Now, if you mean they daisy-chained supply lines...
Nov 15, 2012 20:31
I got a dropbox on google, but haven't loaded it yet. be a project for my son when he gets home for Thansgiving
laundry hookups were in a closet in a room on the first floor, light switch for the room is in the closet behind where the washer will go.
@shirlockhomes No ... www.dropbox.com ... download and install the software, drag the pictures into the 'public' folder that you want to be public, and after it's done uploading then right click on them and get the 'copy link' and just paste it in here and we'll all be able to see it.
I just put in natural gas here and my sub said he had to use black pipe up to so many inches from fixture. maybe he is just fussy
@KarlKatzke It was split off the main, then run horizontally along the basement/crawlspace ceiling then up into the kitchen addition.
@shirlockhomes My understanding was that you can only run flex pipe vertically, but I'm not a pipefitter so what do I know.
I'll get some pics off wife's Apple. she has been documenting the project start to finish
I really don't know the code on that stuff. I trust my HVAC guy for that.
Nov 15, 2012 20:36
@shirlockhomes It would make a great blog post.
I try not to mess with gas as much as possible.
ya it would be fun. Could write the steps and materials etc. sounds like a good winter project
we use black pipe up to 3 feet from the fixture - flex lines shouldn't be longer than 3 feet here
'lo
I have seen some very bad things happen with gas. Lost my best friend when his house exploded back in 1984
@lsiunsuex You haz teh codez?
@ChrisF Did your dog take over for you?
Nov 15, 2012 20:38
no :( just how my father was trained to do it
seems that is what my guy says also
3:40! later.
@Tester101 Yeah (Web Apps on rotation at the moment)
Gotta tell you guys, I went with a Viesman on wall boiler with a separate zone hot water on demand...... Incredible 97% eff and costs a fraction of what oil used to cost in this house
largest bill last winter for heat, hot water, cooking and the fireplace logset was $130
@shirlockhomes You have radiators or baseboard heat?
Nov 15, 2012 20:42
FHW baseboards
We need to get a new boiler - we have a "combi" boiler (instant hot water) but it's thermostat has gone so the water alternates between almost scalding hot and cold. Luckily we've got a thermostatic mixer shower that evens out most of the variation.
I definately reccomend a modulated condensing type. Viesman made in Germany
You can't legally buy anything else in the UK any more :)
it senses the outdoor temp and adjusts the boiler temp to the baseboards
Can't buy what?
Non condensing boilers
The current one is less than 10 years old, but we think it's a little underpowered for the use we make of it - which is why it's starting to fail.
Nov 15, 2012 20:45
Ok, understand why, for sure
@Tester101 Interesting ... They ran it from about ten feet from the fixture horizontally (so that they didn't have to retap the black line) and another ten feet vertically. And it passed inspection. Possibly because it was in the attic and ventilated rather than in the basement or under the house?
@shirlockhomes Yeah, and then there's Indianapolis recently... that looks to have been a malfunctioning heater.
@shirlockhomes So your boiler supplies both FHW to the baseboards and DHW?
That was unbelevable, but my buddy's house dissappeared the same way.
his explosion was caused by propane
yes, there is a separate heat exchanger that works like a separate zone for DHW. The whole unit is like 24" X 12"
The main boiler is about 24X 36 8" deep
I can adjust the DHW temp with a knob on the unit.
digita read out etc
Sounds cool.
No problems getting water up to temp in the winter?
The water heater is mounted directly under the boiler with a loop
none
get hot water at tap in about 3 to 4 seconds and never stops
Nov 15, 2012 20:52
Nice.
think my unit is rated at 150f at 6 gals a minute
I have it set at 125 and can't run it down to even warm,,, love it
The nice thing about doing a complete rehab is putting in the newest technology and energy efficient apliances...
easy when all the walls are open and easy access to everything
I'm running around like a headless chicken, but I do have two quick announcements to make:

Q: What questions should we migrate to Gardening

BMitchPer this meta.so post, if we want to migrate old questions to gardening now, we need to build a list and coordinate with the Gardening site to get some agreement on a mass-migration. If you're wondering why, we can't migrate questions older than 60 days anymore. Important notes: We cannot give...

And we're going to get hats:
5
Q: Would you like a hat for the holidays?

BMitchStack Exchange is looking to have some fun for the holidays by giving people hats for various tasks around the site. These, unfortunately, aren't real hats, more like holiday badges that you can see on your gravatar. They hosted a holiday hat bash on the Gaming site last year, and have asked if o...

HATS!!!
Can I wear it on my pic by electronic/computer magic? lol
Still time for some PUTting?
Nov 15, 2012 21:03
@shirlockhomes That's the idea. They are cheap, so they're saving money be printing hats with electrons. :)
I'm replacing bedroom closet shelves
@NiallC. Neat!
@NiallC. I made the referee decision to extend it for as long as you guys want.
Oh so cool lmao
Nov 15, 2012 21:04
Awesome.
@KarlKatzke You obviously haven't seen my bedroom closet or anything else in my house for that matter. Neat is exactly what it's not
@NiallC. I was only talking about the color, finish, and assembly of the shelf.
I'm trying to decide between the cheap Rubbermaid style stuff and probably horribly expensive stuff from the container store or similar
I need a shelf over my kegorator for glasses and stiens
@KarlKatzke Color is nice, finish and assembly not so much :(
Nov 15, 2012 21:06
@NiallC. OK, it looks nice from the pictures.
The wire shelves are inexpensive
fairly easy to install if you can find your studs
@shirlockhomes Agreed, but they feel kinda flimsy.
After the current shelves, I'm looking for something that'll stand up to an earthquake
not if you use the full support braces, they will hold a fair amount of wieght
Yikes!!! no earthquakes please... we had a small one a couple of weeks ago
strange for this area
I just installed the rubbermaid shelving last month in a closet
I've also installed the elfa stuff in the past in a closet
The Rubbermaid modular system?
Nov 15, 2012 21:14
@Aaron elfa is one of the systems I'm looking at.
It works very much the same - you generally will need to cut it yourself for the HD stuff though, and you won't get a planner helping you out saying 'you really don't want 16" wide shelves here because this closet is too shallow for them'
@shirlockhomes yes
I found out the hard way that Rubbermaid makes two series of systems and the parts are not interchangable.
Yeah um
Shelftrack and something else
nice stuff however
@shirlockhomes Did not know that. Thanks
Nov 15, 2012 21:16
Direct Mount vs Shelf Track I think
Ok, this is hilarious -- A White House Petition
ya... one is open stock and the other is more in kits with add ons... next to eachother at lowes, so a bit confusing
Peacefully grant the people of the United States of America to have Grover Norquist be brought forth in chains and put in a public pillory. Once Grover Norquist has been secured, anyone who wishes will be allowed to punch him once, and only once, square in the dick.
@Chris, love it!!!!
Peacefully grant the State of Canada to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government
Looks like there might be some TROLLS on that site.
Nov 15, 2012 21:24
I'm also planning to replace the lights in the closet. Anyone know if NEC 2011 changed the clearance requirements?
I have two globe style, mounted on the wall above the sliding doors.
I plan on installing these:
@Niall those look great
I remember someone on the site talking about some changes to NEC in closets, but I can't remember what it was about
I'm too cheap to buy the new book. lol
4
Q: What about a light switch in the closet?

TroutOkay you guys I have next question. And like all good questions this one begins with a story. I was reading the post about a nick in a wire and read a couple of you mention that light switch in a closet is not to code. What's up with that? Why not? When I open a closet and it seems dark, I...

But I think @Tester101 quotes from NEC 2008
The closet is 37" deep and the biggest shelf I've seen is 20", so I think I'll be OK. It's always nice to be sure though :)
We always put the switch outside the closet.
I lighted switch is great because you know if the light is on when the door is closed
Nov 15, 2012 21:40
@NiallC.keep in mind that you may want to put things above your head, so a very deep shelf will inhibit you from putting large things on the top shelves because you can't manuver them around that deep shelf
it should never be more than 40 to 50% of the depth of the closet if the storage area is above the door height.
makes it hard to hide larger boxes from the kids up there.
My current broken shelf is 16" and it "feels" about right, so that's what I was thinking for a replacement.
if it feels good, do it!!! lol
4
But I was also thinking of adding more shelving lower down, so I was thinking 20" for them.
Nov 15, 2012 22:03
Thanks for joining this week's PUT
